Opened in October 2001 with native John Besh at the helm, Restaurant August is the only restaurant to be awarded a perfect "5 Bean" score from The Times-Picayune in the past two years. Food & Wine bestowed Besh with the honor of "Best New Chef" in 1998. Gourmet magazine's Guide to America's Best Restaurants listed August in its top five picks in New Orleans.Continued

  • "The waiter was extremely attentive and very knowledgeable about the preparation of every dish we asked about. My wife had the chop salad, fresh greens which seemed like a veggie ceviche since they were tender from the citrus vinaigrette. I had the potato gnocchi which blended nicely with the lump crab. For the main course, my wife had the scallops, two side-by-side a pork belly, so tender that it could've been taken for a scallop, but for the light pork flavor; the scallops were done to perfection, with an ever so slight pink in the center of each. My trout Pontchartrain was uniquely prepared; bread rolled seasoned and toasted topped the generous portion of the filet and topped with truffles."

  • "I am a foodie. I love to cook and I've seen Chef John Besh many times on TV. When planning a business trip to New Orleans, I made sure to include a visit to Restaurant August. I was not disappointed. My husband and I are really into wine and had fun making choices from the extensive wine list. We started with the beet salad. The combination of flavors was amazing in combining the greens with red and golden beets, blue crab, and bacon. We each had different fish entrees. Once again, great favors and textures. Desserts were just okay."

  • "We were party of four. Amongst our party one had trout, another had scallops with pork belly, two had market veggies salad and one also had gnocchi with crab and truffle. All enjoyed their food which was fresh and beautifully presented. The salad was so colorful and must have had at least 8 to 10 different type of veggies. The service was also great. Unfortunately we are not into wine but seemed like they are known for their wine pairing menus as well."

This was the best meal we have ever eaten in New Orleans. The food was superb, the service was on-point and the ambiance was romantic. We will definitely return anytime we are in the city."

  • "The food was creative, upscale with the desired NOLA twist. Best dishes for me were the amuse bouche, the market chop (every vegetable was cooked to perfection,) and the foie gras appetizer. The entrees would have been outstanding, but were too salty for my taste. As matter of fact, I found an abundance of salt in almost every meal, expensive and cheap, during my visit to New Orleans. The service was attentive, not obtrusive. The servers went above and beyond to answer questions or meet your needs."

  • "As a present, my husband bought plane tickets and made a reservation at August. We arrived early and were promptly seated. Beautifully restored building with a rich, warm feel. Staff was very attentive,not intrusive. Complimentary amuse bouche was nice. Apps were very good. Gnocchi & the beet salad were excellent. Main courses were good. I had the duckling and hubby had the ponchatrain. Wish mine had a bit more of the corn. Duck was a bit chewy. Trout was flavorful. Portions were good. Dessert was also good. The lemon soufflé was really nice - ice cream was too gingery for me. Hubby's financier was good. Caramel was excellent. We really enjoyed the little praline at the end of the meal. Wish it had been a dessert option in some form."

  • "I found Restaurant August online. we picked it because of all of the great reviews it had, we went there for our Honeymoon dinner and it was the perfect choice. The salad has all these different flavors that blended together so wonderfully, buttery Brussel sprouts with a slightly pickled carrot. Amazing. I had the roast duckling and I cannot use the word perfect too many times in this review. It was blackened on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. for desert we had the lemon souffle, tart and sweet, blended, yes, perfectly."

  • "Apparently I placed a note when reserving on Open Table 6 weeks prior. I must have told them it was my wife's birthday (but I forgot that I did that many weeks prior) As dinner was in progress, I was thinking of escaping to tell them to dress a dessert for her, but didn't They must have gotten the note from months ago because the dessert had a candle & ' Happy Birthday ' in chocolate sauce Love this place for making me look like I was on top of it. (Even though I clearly wasn't) Great ambiance"

  • "Our 7:45 reservation time came and went, the previous seating stayed through 8:15 at least. it appeared to be slow turnover across the 1st seating and the 2nd seating happened at once and overwhelmed the service. The usual fall out occurred, complicated by the fact there was no 3rd seating of our table and there were to the other 2 tables seated at the same time. Was a bummer being seated late and then being last on the attention list. Service was pleasant but harried and rushed. 9:00 before first bit of food hit the table. Communication wasn't great, the somm brought a bottle of red burgundy vs the white burgundy from the same producer. Head waiter caught it. Food was very very good across the courses."

  • "It was a girl's night out to celebrate my sister's first baby that is on the way. We all ordered the vegetarian tasting menu, it was to die for!! My mom and I also ordered the wine pairs and for my pregnant sister they served an assortment of mocktail so she did not feel left out & all the mocktails were delicious! Service was amazing as well as the food, we would all highly recommend to anyone!"

  • "We have eaten at August in past visits to New Orleans and, although they were more than acceptable, this time our meals did not seem to have that extra unique quality of flavors that they have had in the past. My grouper "signature dish," which had been recommended by the waiter, was disappointingly ordinary. My husband enjoyed his Pontchartrain trout entree, and the lemon souffle was excellent."

  • "My eight-year-old son is an absolute foodie, so I booked August for lunch on our trip to New Orleans. We both had the three-course lunch menu, which was phenomenal, but the highlight was when our waitstaff took my son to the kitchen to meet the chef after lunch. They all went out of their way to make him feel special and to encourage his love of great food! Such a special experience for us both! Thank you!!"

  • "We have been going to August about twice a year for a long time. The tasting menus are usually incredible, and fully of flavors that you have never had before. This time it was a little too weird. Pigtails, tripe, goat. The dishes were good, but not great, and not what I have come to love about August. However, my wife had the vegetarian tasting menu that was fantastic, and it beat her expectations. You pay extra for the tasting menu, so I expect high quality ingredients more than the creative ability to make weird ingredients taste good."

  • "To start the evening I ordered my usual drink of bourbon and ginger ale. It was suggested that I try the house made ginger beer which I did and was quite pleased. After some discussion I went with the vegetarian tasting menu. I was extremely happy with all four vegetarian choices. This restaurant is charmingly decorated and the staff is very attentive."

  • "I love John Besh. Love him. But I have to say I was a little disappointed with August. It wasn't so much the food that was disappointing rather than the service. This is a high end place and I feel like we were treated like we weren't given the time of day. We were there for a special occasion and our server(s) were lackluster and we kept getting passed around from one server to a hostess throughout our meal. We enjoy dining out and if we find a place we love, we don't mind spending a couple hundred dollars for a nice meal. I can't say that I would return to August."

  • "We had a fabulous meal here, by chance we ordered the Vegetarian Tasting menu , paired with the wines and we were in heaven!! We are actually meat eaters and shocked ourselves, but the menu sounded so good that we decided " why not" and we weren't disappointed. Our service has been better elsewhere, and the wine sommelier was completely inattentive even though she was not that busy, but the FOOD shines and the physical building is beautiful. The hostess was excellent, too."

  • "We went for the Friday Prx Fixe Menu. I was early and asked to wait at the bar. No one offered me water to drink, only if I wanted a cocktail or wine which I did not at lunch. The staff were rather stuffy and not overly friendly. The amuse bouche of custard in an eggshell was delicious and I guess did give us a glimpse into Chef Besh's idea of his cuisine - very rich French haute cuisine. All the dishes that followed were very rich. The fish stood out. The deserts were very good and rich (again) followed by complimentary mini pralines and chocolates. We could not even eat those and took them back with us. I would have given them 5 stars if the staff were more attentive and less snobby. Food also a bit salty."
