A word from Restaurant August
Opened in October 2001 with native John Besh at the helm, Restaurant August is the only restaurant to be awarded a perfect "5 Bean" score from The Times-Picayune in the past two years. Food & Wine bestowed Besh with the honor of "Best New Chef" in 1998. Gourmet magazine's Guide to America's Best Restaurants listed August in its top five picks in New Orleans.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I heard good reviews about August so I was expecting impeccable, friendly service with great food and ambience for dining. I was not as pleased. The food was good but the duck and beef were too rare. I guess it would have been nice for the restaurant to ask how we would like the duck and beef. The veggie entree was a larger portion of the appetiZer which I was not that happy about. The service was okay and compared to the service I've experienced at other fine dining restaurants I was a bit disappointed. I mean hot water for my hot tea was not refilled. My friend didn't get a knife for her fish, she ended up with a butter knife. I didn't even get a fork for my entree because the staff had cleared it after my salad."

  • "Wonderful meal! We went to thank friends who had lent us their house while we had renovations in ours and August was perfect location to thank them. It's the best special occasion restaurant in our view and it's not stuffy, we find it very relaxed. Great service. Special attention from Chef Pulsinelli an added bonus!"

  • "WOW- WOW-WOW. The restaurant is incredible. I will say the bar staff was a bit aloof (but maybe it's a Southern thing). The waitstaff and table service was fantastic. Their attention to detail and ability to suggest courses that would flow together well really helped us along on our journey through the menu. This place is very special and will be on my list of "Best Meals Ever.""

  • "Outside it was a horn honking traffic crawling boisterous mess. Inside was let's see....what is that word, oh, right--PERFECT! Foie GRAS was out of this world. The bread was the best I have ever had in town. The salad was an amazing rainbow of flavors, gorgeously presented and almost too pretty to eat. They call it a chopped salad but it deserves a more elegant name...radishes, squash figs, tomatoes a sweet bite, a pickled bite, every forkful different. Dessert was a white cholate dream. Gracious, refined, charming, PQERFECT! Thank you John Besh! Cooking from the heart indeed!"

  • "It was my second time dining at August, and it was as magical as the first time (over 3 years ago). The blue crab and black truffle gnocchi is heavenly. My only compliant is that it's ONLY an appetizer and not an entree."

  • "Dinner was spectacular, from the crawfish tart to the amazing soft shell crab, and the dessert that combined 4 different chocolates. As a 60+ woman dining alone, I never felt uncomfortable or out of place."

  • "Went to August for their Friday lunch. When I first saw the price 20.14 I thought they were dating the menu. The price for a three course lunch was $20.14. What a value! They sure don't skimp on quality. All of the entrees on the regular lunch menu were more expensive than the three course lunch. The Pate Campagne appetizer was a generous portion with an excellent taste. The entrees were wonderful and the desserts were big. Don't let this pass."

  • "Excellent food and service. The dishes are unusual with great presentation and very tasty. Staff friendly and helpful explaining preparation of food. A memorable experience. Highly recommend."

  • "I have wanted to dine here forever since watching John Besh on TV. I have two of his cookbooks and admire his love for New Orleans. So..it definitely did not disappoint in the food category. Thought the service was a bit too stiff. The setting is beautiful and like that tables are not jammed together."

  • "I am in the hotel sales business and I brought three clients who are very seasoned and worldly travelers; they were most impressed with the food variety, quality, and most importantly, how the manager and the server described the food and their knowledge of ingredients and preparation. The clients were so impressed that they will probably book their Board of Directors dinner of 60 people at the restaurant."

  • "Our Server and her Assistant were top notch. Unfortunately, their expertise couldn't overcome what was an extremely average (at best) meal. The presentation of every dish was exquisite. But, after just one bite of each dish (sampled 5+ separate menu items) I was already disappointed. This place has a cool vibe, exceptional service, beautiful presentation and average (at best) food (taste). The problem with that is the price. Food needed to be better."

  • "we ate at August our last night in NOLA after having dined at only great restaurants the previous evenings. We loved them all, Sobou, Galatoires, Cochon, and GW Fins, but August stood apart from them all- it was outrageous! It was a beautiful place, the service was very knowledgeable and friendly, without being intrusive and the food, especially the Gnocchi with crab and the beet salad were dishes to dream about eating again! The entrees were extremely good too, but the gnocchi was so delectable it stood alone! The lemon souffle tart was pretty darn good, as well! Definitely will return, a great reason to go back to NOLA!"

  • "I have been eaten Lec Bec Fin,and Gotham bar and grill many Occasions, But this place is no way near that. Very small portions and The captain went over the Degusation menu all other tables except mine. I probably have eaten more French Foods than he does,Very poor judgement for a five stars restaurant.ONly one time deal for me"

  • "I was so excited to go to August! The ambiance was comfortable and elegant, and the service quite nice, however the food did not live up to the reputation. While everything was good and parts even notable, I feel R'evolution is a better choice offering a similar price point, excellent service, wonderful ambiance, and meal you will not want to end. If the pricing were reduced 20% or so I feel it would be on par for the experience offered."

  • "The service, food and ambience couldn't be better and the staff takes great pride in EVERY ASPECT of making THE EXPERIENCE extraordinary! Each dish is unique, beautiful to the eye, and great to the taste. Flavors are combined in new and exciting ways and textures include combinations which surprise and delight you. Local farms provide as much of the fruits, nuts, vegetables and meats as possible. The The wine cellar is extensive and the staff is extremely knowledgeable in wine pairings. Chef John Besh has created another winner in AUGUST. We were welcomed into the kitchen and INVITED back for another experience. Foodies will LOVES this restaurant!"

  • "I'm from around the New Orleans area and thought since it was a John Besh restaurant it should have been better. Food was adequate at best. I've eaten at other John Besh restaurants and they were good. I was very disappointed for the price of the food and the portions. I would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "I took my fiance to Restaurant August for her birthday. We were graciously greeted at the door and immediately felt welcomed. We started with the eggplant steak w goat cheese. Excellent. They also served an egg in its shell which was more of a custard then topped with something that gave it a crunch. Very tasty. I had the pork loin that was also served w pork belly. The pork belly was too fat for my taste. Pork loin was very tasty. My fiance had striped bass. It was presented well. She enjoyed it! For dessert they presented a lemon soufflé w raspberry ice cream. They wrote happy birthday on the plate for my fiancé. Very knowledgeable waiter. Very good service."

  • "I had dinner at August recently on the first night of my honeymoon, and I have to say it was the best meal I've ever had. The service was excellent, and the cocktails were delicious. The blue crab gnocchi is simply life changing. Do yourself a favor and have dinner here, it is worth every penny."

  • "I was in town for a business dinner with customers and was extremely annoyed and disapointed with the service at this restaurant. While the food & atmosphere were fantastic, the service took away from our group being away to enjoy it. The service was stuffy & badly timed. When we needed something there was no one around to assist and when we did not need anything the server would be roaming around constantly staring down the table. We felt extremely rushed when ordering each course as well. When we would ask for more time, he would came back within minutes to take the order. Even though all tables around us were empty, we felt we were being pushed out. For such a pricey restaurant/ fine dining, you would expect a lot better."

  • "I brought my 12 year old nephew for a belated birthday dinner. He is quite the young foodie. We split everything and savored every bite. Foie Gras Three Ways was amazing! It's served with brioche toast. Hated sharing that dish! The gnocchi with crab and truffle - delicious. Squash blossoms, soft-shelled crab... Of course, I did not have my fair share of the award-winning banana pudding!"

  • "This flagship of the John Besh empire is always busy. Make a reservation and make it early. The food is always adventurous and sumptuous. The service will be lead by a professional waiter/table captain with several staffers watching your table. Our waiter this trip was Chris who was very knowledgeable, courteous and personable. His wine recommendation was spot on and he properly decanted the wine for full release of the flavor. We had a delightfully unrushed dining experience."

  • "The wait staff and especially our waiter were fantastic. They were very attentive and helpful. We expected high quality food considering August being a John Besh restaurant that we were not disappointed. Our area of the restaurant was a smaller room with several very noisy tables. Randi (she was our waiter) was on top things and brought both tables under control. She then made sure our desert experience included an additional desert and a port for my wife. We will definitely return."

  • "I've gone to 3 john besh restaurants including commander's palace and domenica. This one takes the cake. Amazing! Food. Great service. Friendliest staff. Super atmosphere. Centrally located to the French quarter (we walked there and didn't feel like we were about to be stabbed). Excellent location. I can't recommend it more. You have to dress up if you're going to go for dinner and I probably wouldn't bring children. Me and my wife went for our 3 year anniversary. Go for it!"

  • "John Besh's degustation menu at August helped make a special evening even more memorable and remarkable; it is very possibly in the top meal or two that I have ever eaten. The wine pairings were top notch, every course was adventurous but authentic, and the service was unparalleled. Can't wait to go again!"

  • "The seared fois gras & salad of heirloom beets/crab meat, bacon was outstanding..... I had the breaded trout Pontchartrain was exceptional, while everyone else loved the special (slow cooked rib eye steak).... This is a phenomenal restaurant."

  • "One of the best meals I've had in a long time and that includes some fabulous restaurants around the world. From the amuse bouche to the multiple course tasting menu, the kitchen clearly takes time & effort to produce superb results. Expensive and worth every penny. I would recommend August hands down over the other John Besh restaurants that I've tried."
