A word from Restaurant Alma
Opened in 1999, Restaurant Alma is a casual fine dining restaurant, offering eclectic American cuisine and warm hospitality in a rustic historically preserved building. A high, open beam ceiling, exposed brick columns and concrete floors display the original space, while an open kitchen, banquette seating and gentle lighting contribute to an intimate and contemporary feel.

Alma is best known for sourcing the best quality seasonal ingredients available and features a high percentage of local and organic products. Our menu changes every six to eight weeks, offering both new and signature dishes. We feature both a three course tasting menu format, allowing the customer to select any three dishes from the menu for $50 and a la carte options.

Alma has been awarded 4 stars by the StarTribune and shares the #1 food ranking in ZAGAT for Minneapolis/St. Paul

Went with a friend to celebrate another birthday. Was totally lovely, like the three course menu arrangement. Ordered the wine pairings which were incredibly delicious and spot on. Our server seemed nervous and slightly flaky -- at one point asked to see the regular wine menu again and she went to a different table with it on the other side of the room, also reset our silverware and forgot to give my dining partner a fork. Other than that, food was incredible.

5th Annual Birthday Dinner was the best one yet! 20 dishes, 9 wines, 4 great friends and engaging bartender makes for a great night. We now choose to sit at the bar to be close to the wine bottles and get the stories of their origins (or is it so we are never too far from the pour?). How do you pick a favorite dish when 18 of them are your favorites? Still hands down my favorite restaurant in town and I am very eager for the extension to open next door.

A favorite restaurant for us. Relaxed, warm ambiance with focus on great food. Seasonal menu - on this trip for my wife: Chilled Sweet Corn Soup, Bok Choy Fritters, Roast Chicken for main; and, for me: Smoked Rabbit Salad, Grilled Bread (with braised pork rib, pepperoncini & burrata), Duck Two Ways for main. Shared bottle of sparkling: Jansz Rose Brut, NV, Tasmania. Split the Dark Chocolate Mousse for dessert with capacino for her and 10 yr Tawny Port for me. Winners were: corn soup, rabbit, grilled bread, and roast chx. Outstanding service from front door through dinner. Server was outstanding. Great spot for special dinner or relaxed dinner for couple or small group. Clientele from 40s to 20s. Dress casual to nice casual.

Restaurant Alma & staff have a way with how they pay attention to each customer - making one feel as if he or she is the sole reason for their existence. Each time I dine there, that sense of being cared for and valued is paramount. I am always delightfully surprised with the food - whatever I have decided upon. Last week we came to celebrate a birthday. The seasonal summer salad was fresh, nuanced with the anchovy laced dressing and assorted veggies and mushrooms. The bok choy fritters were a treat - crunchy and slightly sweet. The hot smoked salmon was flavorful, tender and perfectly moist. Our server seemed to enjoy describing dishes and making sure we were pleased. We were. Alma is tops in Minneapolis.

The menu changes every 6-8 weeks because this is a farm-to-table restaurant. The food is exquisite. Their three-course menu is just the right portions and features very unique flavors. Definitely a place for foodies and people who like to try new things. Would have gone back the next night if budget and time allowed!

Restaurant Alma has the reputation as Minneapolis' #1 restaurant, and this reputation was reinforced when the cab driver taking us there reported that he'd never had customers do anything but rave about the place. Tucked away a bit from the downtown hustle, Alma offers a simple but elegant space and superbly elegant food. They specialize in a three-course prix-fixe menu and the waitress, who was both well informed and wonderfully accommodating, assured us that the portions were served with three courses and a possible dessert in mind. After dinner we were full but not stuffed, and the tastes - oh the tastes. I had the duck which is one of the signature dishes, and others in the party sampled other items on the creative menu. Great!

If you are a foodie, this is the place. Extraordinary preparations, great service, classy but not pretentious. I had the lemon shrimp as a first course, we both had a lamb and garlic nan for the second course. Unique and delectable. We also had the same third course, halibut in papillote, one of the best halibut preparations I've ever had. You can tell the food is prepared with the utmost of care. It was fun to watch the activity in the open kitchen. The chef thanked us on the way out. Expensive: about $112/person including tip which puts it in the La Belle Vie category. It deserves to be in the same company.

Nothing in the way of atmosphere here but who cares????!!!!! Not since I dined in a small restaurant on the side of Mont Martyr in Paris have I enjoy such wonderful, complex food. Even the chocolate mousse (which I feared might be a boring end to a fabulous dinner) was a taste adventure. I can hardly put into words my enthusiasm for this delightful place. The menu changes every three months; locals should put Alma on their quarterly calendar. Make a reservation! p.s. Do the wine pairing.

Have eaten here before and loved it. Felt the menu this time was unfocused. The pairings just did not flow well. The quality was less than in the past. For example my wife had the halibut which was bland and I had the pork loin which was rubbery. We could have cooked better. We passed on desert because they all seemed unappealing. Finally the service was verging on inattentive. We were out of wine well before our final course arrived and waiter did not notice. We were nearly done with our course by the time our wine arrived. For the price we expect better.

This was one of my favorite restaurants of my life, we were only 2 courses in when my husband was saying we have to come back here. There was amazing food, but the special attentention to detail was my favorite. For instance, we had a terrible time deciding on first course, because they all seemed amazing, but the waitress picked up on that and sent out a 3rd starter anyway as compliments of the kitchen. AMAZING! Also, the very attentive service of beverages, plate and silverware removal. The perfect end of the night, with the check came a small bowl of nutella popcorn. This is was an amazing foodie experience, in a romantic, yet casually sophisticated atmosphere. Well done Restaurant Alma!

This was a perfect spot for a birthday celebration for someone who loves good food prepared beautifully. The tasting menu format allowed many choices and sharing. The food was delightful; the presentations lovely. The wine list is impressive, although the by-the-glass selections are limited. We were seated in a small upstairs loft, which was very pleasant, but we didn't get the opportunity to experience the ambience of the main downstairs space. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and helpful with both food and wine choices and added to our enjoyment of the evening. Make reservations early for weekend dining. We tried to reserve the day before and were only able to get a 9 PM reservation, a little late but still well worth it.

My first time in Minneapolis. My local friend took me to a few notable "hot spot" restaurants, while all very good, Alma was the best dinner restaurant I went to. The wine list and guidance was TOP NOTCH. The food menu (pre fixe) was wonderfully broad and interesting - with enough safe choices for the non-adventuresome in your group. All of our dishes were tasty and cooked wonderfully, all brought to our table at the perfect moment. Service was also TOP NOTCH. I wouldn't hesitate to return, and drag everyone with me!

My sisters and I went to Restaurant Alma for the first time to celebrate a birthday. They have a special dairy free menu for those with dairy allergies! We were very excited by this as most restuarants have a difficult time accomodating dairy allergies and sometimes the only option is a salad. The menu options were great, the food was amazing. The server was very knowledgable about the food and the wine. We would go back again in a heart beat! Thanks for a great evening!

We found the food to be extremely expensive. My salmon and corn was disappointing. It was way too salty, and had no special flare at all. My husband's duck was the same way, very salty and nondescript. I am allergic to zucchini so my choices were limited as the server told me that the "seasonal vegetables" were mixed ahead of time and I would not be able to order a dish minus zucchini. We did the wine pairing, no time was taken to explain what we were drinking. We had to ask for a list from our server. It was our 29th wedding anniversary and we were so excited to celebrate our special occasion at Restaurant Alma. It did not feel special at all! The $205.00 that we ended up spending for our meal and wine was a big rip off.

Restaurant Alma promotes their $52 three course tasting menu to their guests, though the dishes are available a la carte for an undisclosed price. I highly recommend the Lightly Pickled Shrimp for the first course. The Garlic Scape Naan was also very good as the second course. However, neither my wife or I, or anyone else at the tables around us, were too excited about the third course entrees, regardless of which one they got. I would recommend diners get the first two courses a la carte, and replace the entree with a dessert. We shared the Passion Fruit Pudding Cake as recommended by the server.

  • Summer menu a bit underwhelming
    Anniversary
    Dined on 7/18/2014
I love Alma and have been dining there for special occasions for years. During a recent dinner there, service was excellent as always. However, we found the food to be a bit underwhelming this time (granted we had high expectations). We ordered every item on the vegetarian summer menu. We noticed the portions were bigger than in the past, the dishes overall were on the (very) salty side and there was low variation between the dishes. The dessert was excellent though as we ordered the chocolate mousse with angel food cake. I would recommend tweaking the summer menu a bit with less salt and more variation in the vegetarian menu in particular. Fortunately, the menu changes every 8 weeks, so hopefully the next version will be enhanced.
