A word from Restaurant Alma
Opened in 1999, Restaurant Alma is a casual fine dining restaurant, offering eclectic American cuisine and warm hospitality in a rustic historically preserved building. A high, open beam ceiling, exposed brick columns and concrete floors display the original space, while an open kitchen, banquette seating and gentle lighting contribute to an intimate and contemporary feel.

Alma is best known for sourcing the best quality seasonal ingredients available and features a high percentage of local and organic products. Our menu changes every six to eight weeks, offering both new and signature dishes. We feature both a three course tasting menu format, allowing the customer to select any three dishes from the menu for $50 and a la carte options.

Alma has been awarded 4 stars by the StarTribune and shares the #1 food ranking in ZAGAT for Minneapolis/St. Paul

  • "Alma always has wonderful, inventive food. It's a great pleasure."

  • "very unusual food combos beautifully presented and tasting extraordinary,,A kind conspiracy involving a dessert that was not formally ordered but appeared at just the right time. Thank you. Our absolute favorite place to eat, anywhere."

  • "We loved the three course tasting menu at this small, neighborhood restaurant. We would definitely try it again when next we visit Minneapolis."

  • "Restaurant Alma has the reputation as Minneapolis' #1 restaurant, and this reputation was reinforced when the cab driver taking us there reported that he'd never had customers do anything but rave about the place. Tucked away a bit from the downtown hustle, Alma offers a simple but elegant space and superbly elegant food. They specialize in a three-course prix-fixe menu and the waitress, who was both well informed and wonderfully accommodating, assured us that the portions were served with three courses and a possible dessert in mind. After dinner we were full but not stuffed, and the tastes - oh the tastes. I had the duck which is one of the signature dishes, and others in the party sampled other items on the creative menu. Great!"

  • "If you are a foodie, this is the place. Extraordinary preparations, great service, classy but not pretentious. I had the lemon shrimp as a first course, we both had a lamb and garlic nan for the second course. Unique and delectable. We also had the same third course, halibut in papillote, one of the best halibut preparations I've ever had. You can tell the food is prepared with the utmost of care. It was fun to watch the activity in the open kitchen. The chef thanked us on the way out. Expensive: about $112/person including tip which puts it in the La Belle Vie category. It deserves to be in the same company."

  • "The food at Alma is nothing short of amazing--every dish on the price fixe menu that we had was just delicious, as was the dessert. Hard to leave there for under $100/person if you want wine and dessert, but you get your money's worth."

  • "Nothing in the way of atmosphere here but who cares????!!!!! Not since I dined in a small restaurant on the side of Mont Martyr in Paris have I enjoy such wonderful, complex food. Even the chocolate mousse (which I feared might be a boring end to a fabulous dinner) was a taste adventure. I can hardly put into words my enthusiasm for this delightful place. The menu changes every three months; locals should put Alma on their quarterly calendar. Make a reservation! p.s. Do the wine pairing."

  • "Have eaten here before and loved it. Felt the menu this time was unfocused. The pairings just did not flow well. The quality was less than in the past. For example my wife had the halibut which was bland and I had the pork loin which was rubbery. We could have cooked better. We passed on desert because they all seemed unappealing. Finally the service was verging on inattentive. We were out of wine well before our final course arrived and waiter did not notice. We were nearly done with our course by the time our wine arrived. For the price we expect better."

  • "The food was outstanding (as usual), and the saffron tagliatelle was one of the best dishes I've ever had. Loved the wine pairings. Will definitely return when the menu changes again."

  • "This was one of my favorite restaurants of my life, we were only 2 courses in when my husband was saying we have to come back here. There was amazing food, but the special attentention to detail was my favorite. For instance, we had a terrible time deciding on first course, because they all seemed amazing, but the waitress picked up on that and sent out a 3rd starter anyway as compliments of the kitchen. AMAZING! Also, the very attentive service of beverages, plate and silverware removal. The perfect end of the night, with the check came a small bowl of nutella popcorn. This is was an amazing foodie experience, in a romantic, yet casually sophisticated atmosphere. Well done Restaurant Alma!"

  • "This was a perfect spot for a birthday celebration for someone who loves good food prepared beautifully. The tasting menu format allowed many choices and sharing. The food was delightful; the presentations lovely. The wine list is impressive, although the by-the-glass selections are limited. We were seated in a small upstairs loft, which was very pleasant, but we didn't get the opportunity to experience the ambience of the main downstairs space. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and helpful with both food and wine choices and added to our enjoyment of the evening. Make reservations early for weekend dining. We tried to reserve the day before and were only able to get a 9 PM reservation, a little late but still well worth it."

  • "My first time in Minneapolis. My local friend took me to a few notable "hot spot" restaurants, while all very good, Alma was the best dinner restaurant I went to. The wine list and guidance was TOP NOTCH. The food menu (pre fixe) was wonderfully broad and interesting - with enough safe choices for the non-adventuresome in your group. All of our dishes were tasty and cooked wonderfully, all brought to our table at the perfect moment. Service was also TOP NOTCH. I wouldn't hesitate to return, and drag everyone with me!"

  • "I found the menu rather limited especially for a low carb diet. the service was a little slow as well. Limited wine menu choices and quite pricey."

  • "My sisters and I went to Restaurant Alma for the first time to celebrate a birthday. They have a special dairy free menu for those with dairy allergies! We were very excited by this as most restuarants have a difficult time accomodating dairy allergies and sometimes the only option is a salad. The menu options were great, the food was amazing. The server was very knowledgable about the food and the wine. We would go back again in a heart beat! Thanks for a great evening!"

  • "We found the food to be extremely expensive. My salmon and corn was disappointing. It was way too salty, and had no special flare at all. My husband's duck was the same way, very salty and nondescript. I am allergic to zucchini so my choices were limited as the server told me that the "seasonal vegetables" were mixed ahead of time and I would not be able to order a dish minus zucchini. We did the wine pairing, no time was taken to explain what we were drinking. We had to ask for a list from our server. It was our 29th wedding anniversary and we were so excited to celebrate our special occasion at Restaurant Alma. It did not feel special at all! The $205.00 that we ended up spending for our meal and wine was a big rip off."

  • "Alma is a treat. Alex Roberts knows his flavors and his audience. We loved everything - from the corn chowder to the lamb appetizer to the halibut entree. And there was a lovely wine list. Esp enjoyed the red (a pinot noir from Monterey County) I sipped throughout our meal."

  • "The dinner my partner and I had at Alma was very good, presentation was great! Best I have seen in anything other than at least a 3 star restaurant. The portions were nice size, the flavors were wonderful, we had the wine pairing also and the wines they picked to go with individual choices were very nice. Did I mention presentation? Again, it was outstanding."

  • "The food and service here was fabulous! Would definitely recommend!"

  • "Every course my husband and I had was phenomenal! The dessert (Raspberry Ginger Pots de Crème) was by far the best dessert I have ever had! Incredible quality of food in a casual atmosphere. Perfect for a tired hubby and wife date night away from the kiddos!"

  • "When we arrived - they didn't have a reservation for us thru Open Table. We enjoyed an amazing dinner at the bar. Staff was lovely and food was excellent. Disappointed that they didn't have our reservation. I have never double checked when using Open Table but I probably will now."

  • "Restaurant Alma promotes their $52 three course tasting menu to their guests, though the dishes are available a la carte for an undisclosed price. I highly recommend the Lightly Pickled Shrimp for the first course. The Garlic Scape Naan was also very good as the second course. However, neither my wife or I, or anyone else at the tables around us, were too excited about the third course entrees, regardless of which one they got. I would recommend diners get the first two courses a la carte, and replace the entree with a dessert. We shared the Passion Fruit Pudding Cake as recommended by the server."

  • "Enjoyed the three course dinner option, which included many tempting offerings and still managed to select desserts - which were delicious and artfully presented."

  • "Recommended highly by friends & it did not disappoint. The flavors were bold, unique, & fresh. Wine list & "wine flights" paired well with the courses. Simple menu = perfection"

  • "I love Alma and have been dining there for special occasions for years. During a recent dinner there, service was excellent as always. However, we found the food to be a bit underwhelming this time (granted we had high expectations). We ordered every item on the vegetarian summer menu. We noticed the portions were bigger than in the past, the dishes overall were on the (very) salty side and there was low variation between the dishes. The dessert was excellent though as we ordered the chocolate mousse with angel food cake. I would recommend tweaking the summer menu a bit with less salt and more variation in the vegetarian menu in particular. Fortunately, the menu changes every 8 weeks, so hopefully the next version will be enhanced."

  • "server was incredibly knowledgeable. creativity is supreme. the 3 course menu idea appealed to some of us but was considered overpriced by others. they view it as a gimmick to upsell a 20-25 dinner to 50 plus."

  • "I randomly chose to go to this restaurant when I was back visiting my mom in Minnesota. They design their menu as a three course tasting menu. Perfect for sharing. We picked two dishes from each course and shared. Everything was perfectly cooked and they were very creative in preparing certain things in new ways, ie bok choy fritters. They also have an open kitchen and all of the staff seems to help prep the food, which was interesting to watch. My favorite things that I ate was the smoked rabbit salad and the duck prepared two ways. Next time I'm in MN, I'd definitely go back."

  • "Loved the food and the service but the menu wording is difficult to understand. It would also help if pricing options were explained clearly on the menu."

  • "Always think of Alma as one of my favorite mpls restaurants. Enjoyed dinner before 'Mill City Summer Opera' Wednesday evening - my mother had Hake baked in parchment--she said it was the best meal she'll ever have! (she's 87 years old)"

  • "While we dropped our highest amount of money on a meal for two to date, this was our favorite. Each of the 7 things we ate were wonderful and we'd eat them again. The flavors, combinations, and depths were exciting and fresh. The unique preparations had us planning our next visit over dessert!"

  • "One of the best dining experiences I've had in a very long time. This is my idea of a perfect restaurant. The food was amazing, and I enjoyed every bite. The wine pairing was absolutely on point. The service was perfection. The overall vibe was one of complete lack of pretension."

  • "Well, second to my wife that is. Menu choices creative, daring and darn delicious!! Fixed price, not inexpensive, but when meals concludes, you push back from table and say, that was fantastic and worth every penny. Service was spot on and very helpful dealing with onion family allergy. Hats Off to chef too"

  • "Alma is always amazing. Great food, great service. Always interesting and unique menus, but not trying too hard. Our "go to" restaurant for special occasions. The most consistent dining experience in Minneapolis."

  • "Fancy food, very fresh and delicious!! I had requested a quiet table, far from the kitchen, and of course we were seated right next to the kitchen. That was pretty irritating. Service was not hurried at all. Server was knowledgeable. On the pricy side. Dinner for 2 with wine was $200."

  • "Loved having a smaller choice with the 3 course menu. Tables a little close together but enjoyed chatting with the folks next door. Got there early but despite open tables they wouldn't seat us."

  • "We went there for our 20th anniversary dinner. The restaurant had a pleasant ambience -- casual and understated. From start to finish the meal was beautifully presented, inventive, artful and delicious. Each part of the 3 course meal was gorgeous. I especially loved the slightly pickled shrimp -- so light, fresh and exquisitely flavorful. I also liked the mung bean pancake with seafood (2nd course). The 3rd course, pork tenderloin on polenta, and duck prepared 2 ways with a bread pudding were satisfying and hearty, as well as wonderfully flavorful. We split a desert, coconut cake with fresh mangoes and kalamansi cream was fabulous. I was especially taken by the Kalamansi ingredient which is rarely used in restaurants around here."

  • "This is my fourth time at Alma (I think) and it was as spectacular as ever. All three courses were impeccable. Dessert was impeccable. The little things, like bread and butter, were impeccable. The service was darned near obsessive, with perhaps a bit too much enthusiasm in refilling water glasses (but better than neglecting them). The only downsides I can think of are that parking can be a bit tight, and I can't go there as often as I like, because I would be fat and broke. But very happy."

  • "We eat at a lot of restaurants in Minneapolis-St.Paul and this is the best kitchen in town, even better than much more expensive places,. The menu-carte is very reasonable and every single dish is a revelation. The wine list is not bad although pricey. Still, corkage is only $15. Order a (less extortionate) bottle of theirs and bring a good bottle of your own. And then savor every bite of every single dish! Share tastes with your companion(s). Not one bite will disappoint!"
