Diner Reviews
  • "We had a party of seven and it was our first visit. We had been to the same location years before and was disappointed, but new owners/chef/menu made it worth the trip. Our waiter/sommelier seemed knowledgeable, however, we were very unimpressed with his presentation of the wine, as well as the fact that he laid the bottle on the glass when pouring. I'm not a wine snob, but even I knew this was wrong. The food was excellent, presented attractively and very tasty. Ambience was very nice, modern but there is a fireplace and excellent view of the surrounding hills. "

  • "Incredible 4 hours. Get there early and sit outside for a glass of wine!"

  • "I gave the Service a Fair rating (almost selected poor) because our Server was not terribly knowledgeable about the menu. She couldn't explain the dishes and didn't offer to find out. When the plates were brought, they mixed everyone's orders up even when we asked, "Is this the .....?" On our prior visit we had outstanding service so I don't know if this was a training issue or if we simply had a server who couldn't be bothered to learn. Menu is wonderful, ambiance as well, bartender excellent!]"

  • "We had dinner there for the first time and the experience was delightful. The food was delicious... all made from locally sourced ingredients and prepared on site, including all the pickling of vegetables and the curing of meats. The menu appeals to both foodies and less adventurous diners. The waitstaff was superb - - eager to describe the origin and preparation, and even history, of each individual selection. Everything was prepared and served with care and enthusiasm. The decor is understated contemporary elegance in a mountain setting. The huge bubble chandelier is a show stopper. We dined on the upstairs outdoor patio overlooking the pool, the Blue Ridge Mountains and a hillside vineyard. Perfection."

  • "17 is truly a spectacular experience. Nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains the only thing that rivals the food is the stunning view from 17! Fresh, local ingredients and a fresh approach to preparation make the food at 17 extraordinary! The service is prompt and friendly, the server's knowledge of food and wine pairings and an attentive manager all make this an exceptional spot....sure to please even the fussiest customers! We can't wait for warmer weather so we can dine on the veranda and sip on cool, crisp wine!"

  • "Restaurant 17 is inconsistent. Trying and shows great promise but could also use the touch of a master. This night the Italian night menu was shakey. The regular menu apparently isn't available on these nights which was a great irritation to some diners. We anticipated so not an issue for us but our entrees seemed experimental, not tried and true. We aren't giving up but left disappointed."

  • "Very good food although the portion sizes were a little small. Unique dishes and a great view. I will definitely be back."

  • "This is a unique and wonderful place. A beautiful space attached to a luxurious boutique hotel. The menu is interesting and diverse and features the freshest products sourced from local farms. Tried the charcuterie platter, risotto, loin of veal. Incredible! Our server was a joy, knowledgeable about the menu, and helpful with suggestions. Will be back, frequently."

  • "Our party of 5 enjoyed the food and the wine at Restaurant 17. The menu offered a number of exceptional dishes. We tried four different dishes on the 'large plate' section and four different dishes on the small plate section of the menu. All were unique, delicious and nicely presented. Would recommend the restaurant for your special night out."

  • "The food was excellent and the server extremely knowledgeable. We were seated on the second floor above the bar, there was a large group downstairs and it was extremely loud. Would not recommend for intimate dinner - mostly because of the space . I was disappointed in the ambiance. The menu is wonderful with the dishes very elegantly served, however the polished concrete floors and plastic tables and fake wicker chairs - seemed out of place for a restaurant with a menu of ths caliber - there seems to be a disconnect between the elegance of the food and the casual spartan type atmosphere. I truly enjoyed the food but would not return because of the lack of ambiance."

  • "It was an enjoyable evening overall. Our servers were very pleasant and knowledgeable. Although all the food was very good, the timing felt a little bit too slow. Notable dishes were the papas bravas and chocolate donuts."

  • "We have dined 6 evenings at Restaurant 17 and will return over and over again. The decor is modern, beautiful and alive. The entire staff is attentive, genuine and knowledgeable. One favorite server, Robert, has help us with our dinner menu selections every evening. Ask him to pair the wine with your plate. He is passionate about Restaurant 17 and describes the menu ingredients, their sources and the plate presentation with enthusiasm and uncanny accuracy. He really loves his career choice! The mountain and vineyard views are breathtakingly beautiful. Restaurant 17 offers a superior dining experience. The sunsets are out of this world and we know "sunsets" since we live in Naples, FL and also in a very nearby S.C. mountain community. Enjoy!"

  • "My husband and I love farm to table restaurants. The food was fresh and oh so good. Food is not covered with sauces to mask poor preparation and precooked entrees. The portions are small but that allows the diner to savor the food and to really enjoy the different tastes. Kudos to the chef. Oh yes, the service was wonderful. Friendly employees. The owners have added contemporary touches to the original La Bastide. Will recommend."

  • "Lovely atmosphere along with responsive, knowledgeable and energetic servers including Lee, the sommelier. 17 is a new restaurant that seems to be doing everything right. Chef Adam is preparing outstanding dishes using local ingredients with a contemporary and creative touch and the desserts have been memorable. Keep up the good work!! We are repeat diners."

  • "This was our 2nd dinner at Restaurant 17 and we continue to be amazed at the Executive Chef Adam's skill. I would describe it as "never failing to delight and surprise" with a refined elegance of presentation and tastes. It was a Tuesday night and in the country, and yet the restaurant was a buzz with ample diners enjoying themselves with a mix of casualness and delight. Other reviews on Trip Advisor have mentioned small portions and I would say the portions are relative to the extraordinary high quality of the food and its preparation. In short, if you want to bulk up go to a Chinese buffet , if you want to experience something not available anywhere else in the upstate, pay a visit to the Restaurant 17. It is fabulous!"

  • "The food was outstanding and the house was full for this Tuesday event. Waitstaff and the wine stewart we're buzzing table to table to make sure everyone was served. We were perplexed that the event offered no corkage (charge) for the evening yet wine pairings were available for +$20pp. Don't get me wrong, we loved it and enjoyed a bottle of 2000 Barolo. Great experience."

  • "We very much enjoyed our first experience at Restaurant 17. With a charming French rustic look from the outside and modern sleek interior, it was a perfect contrast. Not only will we be back, but we will spread the good word about this new found gem!"

  • "The view of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the big windows is lovely, and the servers friendly and enthusiastic. We enjoyed chatting with the sommelier, and the wine was excellent. The food was creative and locally sourced. The hamachi was excellent--beautifully plated, an unexpected combination of flavors. The veal was disappointing. I love preserved lemon, but maybe someone didn't account for how salty they are. It was so salty it was unpleasant. The lemon tart was gorgeously plated and tasty. My husband started with the duck confit, then the steak with wild mushrooms, and a chocolate dessert. He liked the confit and the steak fine (delicious mushrooms), and loved the dessert. My lavender and rosewater cocktail was delicious too."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a very nice meal from appetizer all the way to dessert. Our server Thomas was extremely helpful with the menu and other questions. It's definitely a good choice for special occasions. The drive from Greenville was long, but the atmosphere and food were worth the trip."

  • "We dined at Restaurant 17 for our 22nd wedding anniversary. Hard to find GEM in the "middle of nowhere" which is worth the drive.Staff went out of their way to make the experience very special for us, including printing menus for us with Happy 22nd Anniversary printed across the top. Perfect for the adventurous diner...rabbit sausage wrapped in rabbit loin and then wrapped in bacon and pressure cooked for hours...divine!! Artisan cheeses, house-made crackers and breads. Wonderful experience!"

  • "My wife and I don't go out on a regular basis, and we definitely stay away from the price tags of really nice restaurants. But it was our 19-year anniversary so I wanted to surprise her. First of all, she was very surprised just by us turning North towards TR instead of towards downtown. She had no idea Restaurant 17 even existed, so the whole night was one pleasant surprise after another. We aren't the type to drop this kind of money for a meal on a regular basis, but it was well worth it for a special occasion. The inn and restaurant are beautiful, but the food stole the show. We also had a great server who was very attentive. My only regret is we didn't wait until after the time change as I'm sure the view was stunning."

  • "We dined at 17 Saturday evening. Food was great but seemed to be a disconnect between front and back of the house. Our entrees came on the heels of appetizers and side came after entrees had been cleared. Everyone was nice but something was off. Another issue is seating...in an upstairs side room...not the best setting IMO, another couple was seated right across from us when the room was empty other than us. Another couple had been seated right beside us...jammed too close...and thankfully asked to move. Is anyone thinking?? Lee, the sommelier, was excellent and very helpful. 17 has tremendous potential and th chef's food is quite good. Regardless of our issues Saturday I recommend as my first two trips were much better experiences."

  • "I enjoy an occasional evening of romance and finer dining. In Greenville that almost exclusively means a trip to downtown Greenville. That translates into big crowds, tough times finding parking, and often a hike to get to your destination. So when I heard of Restaurant 17 just north of Travelers Rest, I was intrigued and excited. The food was excellent, and all the staff were very professional and knowledgeable. Try and go during sunlight hours and reserve a table next to the windows upstairs for a panoramic view. Very nice wine selection to complement your dinner, and some unique and interesting cocktails to top off a meal are par for the course from the bar. Also a good selection of microbreweries if you prefer malted hops."

  • "Wonderful place near the mountains. Great for foodies and wine lovers!!!! Saddle of rabbit was delicious and I had pork that was to die for. We also had a lemon dessert and a chocolate dessert. Both were unbeatable. Atmosphere was modern yet classy. Our reservation was for 7pm on a Friday. It was slow when we arrived but as we were leaving around 8:30pm it was definitely picking up. Will return in the summer to enjoy the twilight view of the mountains. Service was great. Our server took a lot of time to explain the menu and suggest the perfect wine parings. Go, you won't be disappointed!"

  • "What a gorgeous place. The waiter, Thomas, was a delight and very knowledgeable. The food is not for everyone since it's quite exotic, but the four of us were very impressed. It was fantastic, and we will definitely return. We thoroughly enjoyed every morsel."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 26th anniversary at Restaurant 17, and we had a very enjoyable evening. The service was excellent, and the food was outstanding. Although they will admit this, I will say the focus is on food quality and presentation - so don't go to 17 expecting to get traditional "American style" portions. We appreciate that many of the ingredients in the selections are locally sourced, and were very fresh. Pasta is made on-site, wine list has plenty of choices, and all the food has very unique presentation and flavor... During our visit, there was a large group of bicycle riders that was being hosted by George Hincape, so the noise level was a bit louder than normal. Also, in the summer, the views are awesome."

  • "I had heard about this restaurant from a friend and thought if would be neat to try something outside Greenville. It is a great location. I thought the food was good but wasn't great. I wouldn't make the drive again when you have places like the new restaurant off plesantburg Da Vincis."

  • "Great unique restaurant for special occasions. Delightfully upscale with the freshest ingredients. Celebrated my birthday with a fabulous open face chicken salad sandwich. Wait staff is very professional and attentive."

  • "We loved the ambiance of the restaurant with a contemporary feel and the great view. Small portions which we actually prefer and everything we had was good but the small plates; veal cheeks and endive salad were outstanding. A limited menu but with very interesting choices. A terrific restaurant for a foodie and it is only 10 minutes outside Greenville. Overall we enjoyed the experience and will return."

  • "Very good food, very fine setting. This was our first visit and it was the evening after Valentines day so it was very busy and modestly slow however they did a great recovery and caught up as the evening went on."

  • "We were greeted for our lunch reservation with "We usually do not make such late reservations for lunch, but we will take you anyway. There is not a bartender so you can have beer or wine." Not very professional and the outing went down hill from there. The lunch menu was very limited and the sandwiches we ordered had more bread than meat in them. The service was horrible. Not a great impression of the restaurant. View is pretty and decor nice."

  • "I read every article about the restaurant and waited for a special occasion to venture on the almost hour drive to Restaurant 17. I have been to two of the top ten restaurants in NYC and that experience was what I was expecting here. Valentines Day dinner was the occasion with the prix fixe menu with wine pairings. We were seated and then waited for over five minutes before a server finally approached the table and asked if anyone had been with us yet; and spoke with us in a way I wouldn't expect from a server at a fine dining restaurant, very informal and unprofessional. The service all night was haphazard, confused and very poor, at $250 for the evening, I expected more. The food and it's presentation were great as was the sommelier."

  • "Went for Valentine's Day. Beautiful facility, great food - very poor service. Our meal took over 3 hours. Would give it another try, but another performance like that and we will not return."

  • "The five-course meal offered on Valentine's Day included a set appetizer and soup, with choices for salad, main course, and dessert. The local beet salad was beautiful and tasty, the strip steak beautifully prepared and presented, and the quail perfect and succulent. The smoked trout on endive appetizer and chowder course were little jewels! Only the Meyer lemon tart failed to delight. Unfortunately, the service was uninspired and inconsistent. One server was gracious and engaging, but our primary waiter was just going through the motions. The venue is extremely austere--plain Formica table tops were as unwelcoming as the spotty service. Go for the wonderful, high end cuisine, but don't expect to be wowed by anything but the food."

  • "We dined at Restaurant 17 for Valentine's Day. Although it was quite hectic, our servers were friendly and the food was outstanding. We especially enjoyed the tilefish and the quail, and the cocktails were tasty and creative. We will definitely return to try more dishes!"

  • "Restaurant 17 is a very special place for dinner however the menu may be a little exotic to be a regular customer. The presentation is excellent and the service wonderful ... plus the chef stopped by the table which is always a nice touch. I would recommend a few "regular dishes" on the menu ... a simple roasted chicken or grilled fish would make the selection a little easier. That having been said we all enjoy the evening and will be back ... maybe we'll try lunch next time!"
