Much improvement over our first visit. Menu is much improved. The soft shell crab was excellent as was the lobster. The trio of tuna was the highlight of my meal.

What a fantastic treat here
What a fantastic treat here in Los Gatos. This town is not really known for highest end food - there are a few places, but Katsu brings itself into the "must-take-guests-out" realm. We were quite impressed! Fantastic inventive menu; nice serving size so you can try many dishes.

Best in the Bay Area
Pricey... yes but worth it! Been waiting for a great Japanese restaurant in the Bay Area and this is it. Food quality and service was excellent. Hamachi w/ jalapeño was so fresh it just melted in my mouth. Chef Katsu even introduced himself at our table to ensure the food was to our liking. Definitely will be a repeat customer.

Katsu delivers again
This restaurant food quality is beyond anything of the like in the area. Katsu prices are worth every delicious bite. It is a winner.

We went to katsu to have dinner with friends. The chef came to our table and treated us like we owned the place. I felt very special, then realized that the chef also gave the same great service to the other tables. He recommended superb specialties and amazing sushi and sashimi. The grilled fish (Halibut) was amazing. We also had black cod which was so delicious. And finally we had lobster tempura which was a little expensive at 50 dollars, but the chef told me that it was a 1.5 lb pound lobster which made sense.
I would order it all again. For drinks we had the 30 dollar sake tasting which was great and almost too much sake.
We really enjoyed our evening.

Good food, service and ambience
My wife and I went in early to beat the rush and had no expectations. The greeting was friendly and ambience is upbeat if not a little disco looking. The music is soft ambient/house music and pleasant. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was very good - interesting twists on sushi and Japanese fare. My only nitpick is that it is on the expensive side even for Los Gatos - this may keep it off our regular visit list. Other than that, I recommend this restaurant.

Amazing japanese gem in Los Gatos
The food here is amazing. I love the food and the TLC that the chef gives while I'm dining. Highly recommend.
6/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
went about 6:30 on a Friday night and it was very quiet (empty) which we loved. We were fearful it would be too costly but there were many choices on the menu at all different price points so were very pleased. Everything was beautifully presented! The service couldn't have been better!! Our water glasses were constantly refilled immediately. Don't forget to eat dessert - Red Velvet cake was yummy.

Los Gatos needs it but it needs PR
This restaurant upon opening was wildly overpriced. All of that is gone now and the best sashimi I have ever had, ditto .Katsu-San's touch with umami and mushrooms. The duck was rubbery and chewy though. Katsu-San is ALWAYS on premises (!!!!!!!); the waiter and hostess were A-plus-plus. The bar staff was incompetent, instead of a $70 Savennieres they served us a $220 Coulee de Serrant without ever showing us the bottle and charged us for it; the waiter apologized and fixed the problem. The reserve wine list is poor, both wine lists have no red Burgundies. Everything else was great and I will go again. But I'll bring my own wine.

Excellent food, awesome service
We have been this restaurant for several times. This time we had really good dinning experience.
Food was always good as usual. I have to emphasize our waitress, very knowledgeable and nice.
When our dish came, she would explain every details.
We had good time.

We went in it's opening week and were very disappointed in the cost vs quality and experience. Plus it was trying to be very clubby, which just doesn't fit in downtown LG.
But we gave it a second try and these issues have improved a lot. There are more options on the menu and prices are more reasonable. The wine list has improved also. They've toned down the atmosphere and now it is a unique and pretty place to dine in LG. Plus everything we had was delicious. We didn't try the sushi this time, but now we are more willing to return and will try it next time.

Excellent evening at Katsu
The food was delicious, the service was very kind and attentive, and the chef made us feel welcome with some personal deliveries of dishes to the table. We had heard Katsu was over-priced, but they have adjusted their offering which is excellent, but much more reasonable.

We let the server and chef feed us
We were a party of 3 and requested the server and chef prepare and serve what they prefer. All guests prefer fish and sushi style food. The recommendations and preparations were amazing. The sake flight is fun and we enjoyed it very much. The salmon appetizer was to die for. Approx. $100 per person (not including tip) with cocktails.

Fresh high quality food
My husband and I were uncertain as to what to expect from this relatively new Los Gatos spot having read mixed reviews. It certainly sounds like the owner/staff are listening to the clients as we found the service very welcoming and portions more than generous. All of the ingredients were extremely fresh and of high quality. I can't stop thinking about the awesome hamachi jalapeno!!! It is worth a trip to Katsu just for this dish! Black cod was also to die for...
Personally, I did not like the atmosphere as it was more suited to Vegas or LA than LG, and lighting was waaaay too bright, but I will be happy to put up with atmosphere deficiencies for food this incredible. We will be returning soon!
7/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food really. All the dishes we had were outstanding, most notable was the mushroom salad and fire kissed beef sashimi.
7/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
What a great night!
Our server Tiffany started our evening out with a warm welcome, excellent suggestions and great service. The Facebook tasting menu was a delight and great portions, beautiful presentation and tasty! Thank you for such a nice introduction, we will be back sooon and have told many friends about our experience.

Some of the best sushi ever
We enjoyed the 7 course price fix meal and found the fish some of the most delicoius sushi we have ever tasted. Our server Nicole was attentive and friendly, also very helpful even though she had a number of tables. The wait staff appear to work well together and the owner would make the rounds to ensure contentment.
7/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Better this time around
This was our second visit and we are happy we gave it another chance since they revamped the price and portions. We were drawn in by a new tasting menu that sounded tasty and was at a good price point. We really enjoyed the food (edamame could use a little work) and there was plenty to go around. We will be back!

It was my first time going
It was my first time going to this restaurant and I instantly fell in love with it. Everything was perfect!

Worth a try
Katsu still seems to be getting their legs under them in terms of food and direction. Though it bills itself as "Japanese-Peruvian fusion", I didn't see a lot of Peruvian influence. There were a couple of outstanding plates in our mix -- the King Salmon in karashi-su-miso and the Beef Tataki Sashimi were great -- and the rest were just OK. Some were unusual enough to be worth a taste, but need some refining.
The staff were very outgoing and the service overall was great. There's a lot of potential here.

Trying the tasting menu
The tasting menu gave a nice variety of food to try. The hamachi was wonderful, buttery and fresh tasting, but the serrano chili over powered it a bit. The miso marinated cod was excellent, cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. The steak had a nice flavor but was not as tender as I would have liked or hoped for. The dessert truly was a nice chef's surprise, a wonderful sweet cake with fresh berries. My server suggested her favorite sake and it wasn ooh and dry and was worth the $25 price per glass. We were not offered coffee and had to ask for it, after our dessert, it was very good, but would have been nice to have with the cake.

We are becoming regulars at Katsu!
This place simply is THE BEST!
They provide a top quality product at a very fair and reasonable price point with outstanding service and great ambience.
I highly recommend this hot spot to all of my friends and family. Check it out!

We got the seven course tasting
We got the seven course tasting meal for two, which was a great deal. All of the items on the tasting menu were great and we were plenty full after the whole seven courses. We also opted to have bottomless champagne with dinner, which wasn't too bad, especially since it was only $10 per person more, and we must have gone through at least a bottle each with the whole meal. The only thing that I felt was poor, was the speed at which service was done. I appreciate having time to enjoy my meal, but when I am finished eating and am asked if we would like the next course, and it doesn't come out for 15 minutes when it is just 10 sushi rolls, it got frustrating. other than that, we had a great time and a wonderful meal.
7/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
We enjoyed the July Special of 7 courses, $40 /person. It was wonderful! Everyone at the table was impressed. Excellent meal for the value.

High End Value
Wonderful dinner and ambiance. Service staff FRIENDLY and gracious. The owner and his management are the extreme toasts of the town. If you have not been you must try. Thanks for yet another excellent evening!

Great Option in Los Gatos!
We did the tasting menu (which was a different price by $20 than listed on their website) and enjoyed most of it.The ceviche & hamachi jalapenos were true stars of the meal.I could have done without the steak course - I found it too big.Couple of gripes:the host acknowledged my gluten sensitivity, which was great. I reminded my waitress, who proceeded to forget & bring food out drizzled with gluten sauces.I then had to tell a different waiter who was much more aware. We ordered cocktails before our meal, and the drinks came out separately-mine came out with the first course. We also found the first three courses rushed,& had to remind our waiter to space the courses out.I think the food was spot-on, but the service could use some refinement.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Up and coming!
The food is delicious, the bartenders are skilled, the staff are outstanding and management is present and on point! I am looking forward to returning with more friends and family for what I am sure will be a wonderful time.

Second visit a success!
A special occasion prompted our plans to dine at Katsu. On our first visit, shortly after the restaurant opened, we enjoyed the (pricey and VERY filling) omakase. This visit, we enjoyed ordering off the menu. The food was very good, the service was excellent. The only problem is the loud music, which made it impossible to hear the server when she described the specials, and made conversation somewhat difficult. We will return, however, because the food and service were great!
8/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our group of four decided to try Katsu based on feedback from a friend. The tasting menu consists of 7 courses for only $60/person. Each course was better than the last...and it seemed endless. We were all very impressed by the food and the service. I would wholeheartedly recommend Katsu for a lovely evening out.
8/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food is fresh and very good but costly. Prefix dinners are $60 per person. There are too many other fine restaurants in Los Gatos to compete with at these prices.
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
First visit was great!
Food, service and ambience fit together well like a good pairing of wine and food. Attractive modern décor, good table spacing and lighting, quick seating (with reservation). Service was friendly and attentive without being obtrusive, and our requests were met without hesitation or errors. Cocktails were good (and strong), edamame with bonito flakes fascinating to watch, unagi (eel) sushi fresh and tasty. Grilled duck breast was wonderfully flavorful, miso-marinated cod delicious, and accompanying mixed vegetables just right - taste and presentation. Dessert cake with strawberries perfect ending. Brought a local wine (no corkage Sunday-Thursday), but the wine list has excellent selection. Katsu "relaunch" successful - we'll be back soon.
8/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
The wife and I opted for the $65 tasting menu, with $10 bottomless Champagne. It was a six (or seven?) course menu with very generous portion size. First was Edamame with shaved bonito. Next was a cheviche. Then, sashimi with thin slices of chili pepper. Highlight was the sea bass for sure. Ribeye was cooked great, just wasn't that impressed with the flavor. Next course was sushi, nothing spectacular there. The dessert was fruit poundcake with vanilla ice cream. Not quite Manresa, but it was an interesting tasting that mixed Japanese fare with spicy heat!

Hooray for Sustainable Japanese!
Really impressed with the sustainable options and FRESH sushi. Our waitress was very hospitable and helpful. Our only complaint is that we ordered too much food! Hubby got the tasting menu, opting for the rib eye since he doesn't like filet mignon. I ordered the Wagyu Beef Sashimi and Jumbo Scallops (the non-spicy scallops) but we would have been fine just sharing the tasting menu. Most tasting menus have much smaller portions, and we were expecting that. Hubby loved the rib eye and Wagyu beef; the sushi was my fave. I also did not like the yellow lighting; it made everything look off. But we really enjoyed the food and service, and we will definitely be back!

Great Raw Dishes
Really enjoyed all of the super fresh raw dishes. Everything super inventive and tasty. Should have listened and avoided the really spicey roll, but fun to try. Service was excellent. Oh the barely seared kobe beef was killer.

Music was too loud...I could not hear my waitress go over the specials...so we did not order them...but if they work on that you will have a good dining experience!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
We've dined here multiple times now and each time the sushi was fantastic, very fresh with a good variety of tuna. It is the best sushi we've found outside of San Francisco. And our waitstaff was very nice each time. We have never been there on a Friday or Saturday night, but the atmosphere of the restaurant seems to cater to a weekend club goer, which is its only drawback and not really appropriate for Los Gatos. Were the decor more traditional Japanese and the music not club music, this would be a near perfect restaurant.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Three of us went to celebrate a birthday and had a very pleasant experience. Our server was excellent. The food veried from just fair to very good. The prices for wine and food are very high, but Katsu does have specials, e.g., no corkage during the week,
all-you-can-drink champaign for $10, and several discount and coupon offers. We will go back.
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Decent, not Stellar
Overall 3.5 stars.
Food- Omakase was a good value and all but 1 of the dishes (the sea bass) were good. Dessert was great definitely a perfect way to end the meal.
Service- Very friendly staff that know their stuff. There were definitely certain tables getting a bit more attention. However at $50+ per person, I did expect a bit more.
Ambiance- cool vibe. At night it was all red inside.
Will I be back? Maybe. But, if I had time, I would prefer making a trip into the city for the Decadent Omakase at Roka Akor which has set a very high bar for all other Japanese Fine Dining.

Completely new restaurant
Katsu had challenges when they first opened, but with new management they have resolved all their issues.
I have eaten there 4 times in the last few weeks and each time the food was incredible. The tasting menu is great and reasonably priced and their special sake tasting menu (next is Nov 26) is a must attend event. Get there before 7 for the Happy Hour Kobe sliders with quail egg and stay for the best sushi in the area.

Dinner on Nov 12th. Came at 6:30, and place was empty. By 7:30 was pretty full. Jumping. Service was impeccable; drinks from the bar were done correctly, with substance. The $60 tasting menu is the way to go for first timers. Great job.

Fantastic sushi and steakhouse
We had a great meal at Katsu with its energetic and lively atmosphere. The service was great. We order the cheg's choice sashimi which included live Uni from Santa Barbara. The hamachi was buttery and fresh, and the spotted prawns were in season and to die for. Chef Katsu presented the sashimi to us explaining all of the intricacies of the various fish and their origin. We followed that course with a Shogun rib-eye. This steak was perfectly cooked and melted in your mouth.
We loved our experience and will be back again soon.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Beautiful décor and ambiance! There was only one other table, so noise level was perfect for us (very quiet), but might get noisy if crowded. The prix fixe had excellent choices, and every course was perfect. The miso black cod is outstanding!
11/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
We went to Katsu for abirthday dinner on a Tuesday night. Read a lot of mix reviews in both Yelp and Open Table. The general theme was that the food was good but the restaurant was too noisy. ..We all had the pre-fix, seven course meal and order a Waygu appetizer and a salmon appetizer. The salmon was one of the best taht we have had with regards to freshness and taste. The Waygu was good but did not stand put. The pre-fix menu, $60 per person, was very good and well worth the price. The quantity was plentiful and the different sashimi were excellent. Mixed with the sashimi plates was a filet steak that was cooked to perfection with a "chili sauce. With regards to noise, it was a Tuesday night and quite quiet.
11/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
The last time we were there for dinner was their first anniversary. We had been there shortly after they opened. The prices
were out of line and the service was mediocre. We were there 3 months ago and the prices were better but service was unprofessional. This time it was all good. Food, prices and service. They are going in the right direction and I would recommend them to my friends and business associates.
