Best Classic & Gourmet Mexican
The food and service here are tops. Do not be fooled by the location. This place is great.
Make sure to try the Sopa Azteca, and the Mole sauces.

Might be the best Mexican on the north side and BYOB is a big plus!

Authentic Oaxacan food in Uptown
Actually, more specifically in Sheridan Park. I had the Enchiladas en Mole N*gro (Open Table won't let me write the FOOD term. Sigh) and it was simply divine. There are few places that I've been to on the north side in Chicago that can do mole right; this is one of them. I was there a couple of nights ago to celebrate my birthday with some close friends. When I've been there before, it was packed and you might have had to wait (worth the wait, I might add) so I made a reservation. We had a party of 8 and it turns out since it was a weeknight, it was not as busy. We had the guacamole with chips which I could have just eaten all night, it is so good. Another friend had the Calabazitas Rellenas and he devoured it. Excellent place to eat.

This place is great! Good food, and surprisingly good brunch. Highly recommend!

Best Mexican food in Chicago
Awesome food. I love their Mole. Its BYOB, so be sure to bring your wine or beer.

Unique Latino food, well deserving
Unique Latino food, well deserving of its Michelin bib gourmand status. The stuffed zucchini entre is different, but in a good way. Cute presentation. Pinapple mole is also interesting. The chocolate cake is the winner out of the desserts. The key lime pie is not creamy enough to satisfy purists. The Mexican bread dessert is a bit dry. It is definitely an unexpected neighborhood gem.

consistently creative Mexican
Once again, a great meal. Creative, wonderful flavors in re-inventing Mexican food. Also, not expensive especially because its BYOB. Highly recommended.

Same as it ever was - great!
Mixteco consistently cranks out some of the tastiest, well prepared elevated Mexican cuisine in the city. I tend to reserve it for 'special occasion' dining, getting my regular fix from any of a half dozen neighborhood taquerias. Having said that, though, the BYOB policy makes it quite affordable, as most entrees are around the $20 mark and not having a tempting margarita list really saves money. We were there as a couple on a busy Friday night, were seated right away and received prompt, friendly service. Decor is colorful and cheerful, folkloric in inspiration but contemporary in execution. The back room is pretty noisy, but not unpleasantly so. Romantic, not so much, but a fun time with superb food, very much so.

High end BYOB
Great food, service, and BYOB. Highly recommended.
5/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
I highly enjoyed the atmosphere of this restaurant, it was very happenin' and fun. Our service was great. Fantastic wait staff. Food was delicious.

Excellent tamales and Tilapia
Excellent tamales and Tilapia tacos but the standout is the pork chop--request it with the the mole sauce and you will keep returning for this dish over and over again!!

Outstanding and unique entries; exceptional service.

When we went during the week,
When we went during the week, the service and food was much better. It is very loud when it is busy. The food was good on Friday but it was too loud.

comfort and upscale Mexican food
Unique, highly flavorful dishes such as grilled fresh fish in a light and spicy sauce served by experienced and friendly staff make this a repeater for us. Great squid salad and so good version of a Caesar salad add to the unexpected in this nicely decorated storefront.

Best Mexican-style food in the city
I'm from the Southwest and I've been looking for the right gourmet Mexican food for a few years. This is it!
7/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Mixteco is a real find. All of the dishes we got were fantastic. Desserts were even better. Be aware that it's kind of loud if it's crowded (Saturday night) and it's BYOB -- they serve no alcohol but also don't charge a corkage fee.
7/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everyone ate to their complete satisfaction. Well prepared, flavorful, and beautiful food. The desserts were the best. Molten chocolate cake was a hit. The flan de cafe was one of the best I have eaten.....and I have eaten flan made by some of the best cooks in Spain.

Not a spiffy place, but wonderful
Not a spiffy place, but wonderful authentic cuisine. Not a taco and burrito place at all. Complex dishes and sauces ( great mole).Very attentive and informed service. Waiter seemed proud and excited about the food, and deservedly so. Slightly higher entree price points easily offset by BYOB.
7/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
took a friend's son here for high school graduation celebration. Food was amazing and we had my favorite waiter who remembers me, always such a nice thing. great food and byob, what more can one want?
7/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good food, BYOB
We loved their Fish tacos, grilled squid salad. My chicken with pecan sauce was amazing

The first time we ate at Mixteco,
The first time we ate at Mixteco, a few years ago, we loved the food but had not returned because the noise level was so high. But we decided to try again. Once again, the food was outstanding. We shared the veg 'sopes' and had the grilled shrimp and grilled mahi-mahi as mains. Man, that wood grilling really does something. And the sauces and accompaniments (e.g. pickled red onions on the fish) were great. The chocolate cake dessert with fresh fruit also was terrific. Service was pleasant and efficient on a busy night. Of course, in my book, there's nothing better than BYO. And the noise? On the loud side but seemed to subside now and then - bearable. We'll be back.

Fun Birthday Night for a Friend
I was very unsure of this place but a friend recommended it. I decided to take a chance and have a dinner party for 7 for my friend's birthday. I was delighted, as was my friend, at the service, the food (which was incredible), and the ambience of the restaurant. I would highly recommend friends and family to try out their dinner menu. It was such an enjoyable night and the wait staff was so pleasant. I loved the look of the place; it was very welcoming yet festive at the same time. Highly recommended.

Good food, great service
The food is very good and service was outstanding. I will definitely go back.

Fabulous food and service
The food was amazing! The service is exceptional! There wasn't one thing that I didn't enjoy!
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was superb and the service was outstanding. We had a group of 9 people and everyone enjoyed the food. Everything on the menu was tempting, unfortunately we can only try so many. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Mixteco doesn't disappoint
Place is byob which is always nice. I suggest a dish with mole sauce. I had the pork chops with the mole sauce and my date had the enchiladas. Both dishes were good. Prices are reasonable too.
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Mexican food that isn't
Great Mexican food that isn't just burritos and cheese-smothered enchiladas! I thought it was a little too loud, though, and wouldn't want to go there on a crowded night with more than 4 people for that reason.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love this place
I have never had a bad meal at Mixteco. The food and service are top-notch. I dined with my husband and two older friends. In my reservation I specifically requested to be seated as far away from children as possible. The two tables next to us had three small children total. There was a lot of screaming, wiggling, crying, etc. being done. It really takes away from the experience when people choose to bring their children to dinner at a restaurant that's really not a family restaurant. I understand that parents want to get out and experience the town, but it's pretty rude for parents to subject other people to the madness that goes on in their homes. I like to have nice, quiet dinners, not feel like I am at a children's playhouse.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
At this point, someone in my group has tried almost all of the entree items -- and they are all consistently good. But I can't pass on the delicious roasted pork.
8/29/2013 5:00:00 PM
Great food. Good service.
Great food. Good service. But too noisy. It was hard to hear and speak to friends sitting across the table

Best moles in town!
I was so pleasantly surprised by my experience at this neighborhood restaurant. I had been told the food was good, and it's BYOB which is always a great draw for me. But, BOY was I blown away by how good the food was. The moles were out of this world, the grilled calamari salad was delicious, and the entrees were incredible as well. (My husband and I were close to licking our plates clean!) Plus, the wait staff here were fantastic. We will definitely be back!

Seems like we are late to
Seems like we are late to the Mixteco Grill; our experience was on par with the best reviewers posted elsewhere. Not fancy by any means, but a place to go if you want really good higher sophistication Mexican food. Service was very prompt and helpful. Guac was okay, not the best; the actual dishes where what shined. Our table had a selection of apps (empanadas, tamales, tacos) and split the roast pork and mole enchiladas; all were excellent with good flavor profiles. Note, this doesn't mean that there was an abundance of heat (so if you are one of those people who judges flavor only on the intensity of the heat then this is not necessarily for you), but rather the flavors were complex with very good depth. Would definitely go back.

Killer mole dishes, good chips
Killer mole dishes, good chips and salsa and a nice room with friendly attentive staff. Also BYOB
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best Mexican around!
Not your typical Mexican restaurant. They have a unique take on the Mexican standards - their mole sauce is one of a kind and worth the trip alone, and every sauce is at least well above average. Waitstaff is friendly and attentive. BYOB is icing on the cake. Lots of large parties which can result in the place getting crowded and/or loud.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Mexican BYO
I had corn tamales, queso fundido, cochinita pibil. The space is sweet and unassuming. Being able to bring wine is a huge plus and the servers are always great. I will be back soon.

The moles are the real thing,
The moles are the real thing, so if you can't handle Mexican food that is untamed and unaccommodating towards the bland American palate, this ain't for you. Otherwise, head on out to Mixteco and enjoy the flavors of unadulterated high-quality Mexican cuisine. It's also not the place for folks looking for "dynamite Margaritas" (often as compensation for the mediocre food they settle for). Mixteco is BYOB, and there's no corking fee either, so that helps in some measure with easing the price of the dinner (about $30/person including appetizer, entrée, tax and tip).
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food and service at Mixteco on a friday night was excellent. I had the duck with black mole, best cooked duck breast ever. Service was friendly and excellent. The others in the party also thought their food excellent
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Authentic, delicious, friendly
Loved everything about this place. Great food, relaxed fun vibe. BYOB. Great pork chops in mole sauce. Will def be back!
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great diamond in the rough
Great little Mexican place in fab neighborhood. The mole is incredible- really rich and spicy. The waiters were kind, food came fast. Guacamole needs a little help. Wish they offered a few of the standards, maybe more extensive menu, but what they had was delicious. Remember to BYOB.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, hard to believe price
We had a wonderful girls night out. The food was fantastic and the server gave us lots of information re: what he recommended and what we should or shouldn't order. The price was extremely reasonable, especially give the high quality. Everything was delicious and we all left stuffed with to-go bags!
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Hubby and I went for our anniversary last Friday evening and we were absolutely blown away. Service was excellent and our waiter Juan was unbelievably attentive. We had the wood grilled calamari salad, followed by a lovely duck in mole sauce and a melt in your mouth carne asada. We cleaned our plates it was so delish, but it got even better when we ordered the flan of the day (which was pumpkin!). The waiter was also sweet to bring us a complimentary piece of awesome tres leches cake for our special occasion Tables are close and it can get loud at times, but it's a good loud-with people enjoying themselves. Also the BYOB is a plus, but Mixteco does BYOB right - they provide chilled wine buckets and no fees for corkage.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Neighborhood spot, but good enough to justify a trip. Food upscale and carefully executed Mexican, very nice presentation. Staff very nice, could be a little more knowledgeable about food allergies (gluten intolerance). BYOB. Definitely recommended!

This restaurant was amazing!
This restaurant was amazing! Can't believe this was my first time there after living near by for 5 years. Just wish Open Table gave points for making reservations.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great BYOB place
THe title says it all...good food for a fair price. Really enjoyed the lamb and the chocolate cake for dessert. Place was somewhat crowded but what do you expect on a Friday night. Fast service.
10/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
My husband and I truly enjoyed the excellent food, service, and the noisy atmosphere. I fekt like I was in Mexico. If only it were warm outside!
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Excellent food and attentive
Excellent food and attentive service. Vibrant scene. Very upbeat. Been there several times.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Delicious and sophisticated flavors
Great food! From the outside, you would never suspect this friendly and informal BYOB has such well-prepared and sophisticated dishes. The sauces on fish, meat and vegetarian appetizers and entrees have complex flavors. The desserts are equally delicious. Bring your favorite wine or beer and there are no corkage fees.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Always reliably good.
I love to go to Mixteco at least once a month. I know I do not have to take a chance on the food. It is always very good. It is also BYOB, which makes it economically attractive also.

Great Real MExican Food
We arrived at 6:45 for a 7pm reservation and were left standing in the middle of the restaurant until a table opened up. I suggested that since they had emailed, and phoned twice to confirm the reservation, I expected that they would have a table for us. The hostess said, "Well it is just 6:48 and your reservation is for 7pm. We were seated shortly after 7 and had a wonderful meal. The waiter, Juan, was helpful, friendly and efficient. All 6 of us really enjoyed the food. This was the third visit for my husband and me and we will definitely go back. Our guests were from Milwaukee and they say they'll come back too. Other than the wait for the table and the snippy hostess it was a great evening.

New Menu Items, Great Flavors
I am never disappointed when I go to Mixteco. The menu always has some interesting options, including new ones this visit, and everything tastes wonderful. It's nice to have this affordable neighborhood option for dinner with friends or on special occasions.
