It's nice to have a more sophistica
It's nice to have a more sophisticated Japanese/Sushi restaurant hiding in NW Austin. The ambiance is excellent - low light, interesting decor, and deceptively more space than you'd think.
The restaurant really likes to play with truffle flavors. From edamame to small plates to rolls... there's truffle. We tried the edamame this time and the truffle flavor was delicate and well balanced. Too bad the edamame was over-cooked and too moist. The macki (rolls) were very good. As with much Austin sushi, the strong use of flavored mayo had a tendency to overpower the delicate raw fish, but the flavors were still creative and very good.
Nice touch - the sushi was served with a sliver of fruit atop. Salmon was accompanied by strawberr

The restaurant has very fresh
The restaurant has very fresh and hard-to-find seafood. You just have to ask Andy, the chef, what fishes he recommends for the day. Best shamimi experience ever! Better than Uchiko.

Fine dining in Cedar Park
The fine-dining experience has finally reached Cedar Park!!! For all of you that have complained for years that there aren’t any great places to eat in Cedar Park you now have a place. For those of you that like Uchi, Kenichi, Sushi Samba, you'll love Soto. I think we had just about every high-end item on the menu, wine, and some extras. Our bill was $150. It would have been twice that downtown. They had real Kobe beef, white salmon, fatty-tuna, and lots of other items you don't find in your typical sushi bar. The dining experience was fantastic; the presentations were Facebook-worthy. I highly recommend giving this place a try. They also have a very affordable lunch menu.

Nothing was lacking in our experience. All expectations were exceeded. This joint is a master of their art.
We went at 530 on a Sunday, so I can't speak to ambiance or noise. But I don't buy into ambiance, only delicious food and good service. This was fantastic food and great service, so I will return.

Must-try new Japanese restaurant
We went to Soto for mother's day and it was amazing! We were all blown away with the mix of traditional and innovative dishes, as well as the very fresh selection of seafood. They even had sea urchin (uni), which we've had trouble finding before as restaurants hesitate to carry it due to its short shelf life.
Our waiter was attentive and friendly. One person in our party had food allergies, and the waiter patiently worked with us to figure out what she could consume.
Definitely recommend Soto - we'll be going back. Can't wait to try their special events, like the chef tasting menu and the social sake hour.

Oasis in Cedar Park TX
Very nice local restaurant. Insides are done up nice and staff is trained. Carpet! Keeps the echo noise down. Yes I know it's hard to maintain, but makes a big difference. Nice selection including edamame prepared 4 different ways! Loved it. Shawn was our server and did a great job.

Great Sushi + Cheap Price
This place is AWESOME! The restaurant is very classy when it comes to the food and design. It reminds me fine dining downtown without having to sit through the traffic and waiting in line for hours for a table on the weekends. We ordered the grouper sashimi, Sake Toro sashimi, oysters, lobster tempura, and also a sushi roll with shrimp tempura in the middle, wrapped with seared Hamachi (a kind of yellowtail), and topped with truffle. The fish is so fresh and so tasty, which reminds me the sushi I had in Japan and Hong Kong. As far as the price goes, it is half what you pay compare to downtown with better food quality. Uchi and Uchiko have awesome sushi, but they get so busy and the food is not always really good compare to Soto.

A North Austin Win!
We enjoyed an amazing dinner at Soto last Thursday night. We celebrated my husband's birthday there and were very surprised and happy to find that north Austin had such a prize. This kind of caliber is usually reserved for downtown,or at least central. My understanding is that the general manager was Uchi's original GM and the chef trained under Mashahuru Morimoto (Iron Chef). Note: The interior ambiance transports you once inside. Everything we ate was very fresh and delectable. The edamame with truffle oil, the carpaccio, the smoked hamachi sashimi and a special - Fire Salmon? were delectable. The only thing we didn't enjoy as much was the Soto Sashimi Maki - just too bland. Presentation on everything was gorgeous. Recommend!

Location is weird. But it gives it kind of a speak easy feel because it is in shopping center between party city and a fabric store. All you see from the outside is this nice door in the middle of a strip center. Walk in and it feels like a New York City restaraunt. Food is amazing.

Great Dinner and Great Staff!!
I live in Oklahoma City, and decided to take a trip to Austin for the weekend, for my girlfriend's birthday. I did some research on OpenTable and picked Soto. I was definitely intrigued by the menu on their site. When we arrived at the restaurant, I was taken back a bit by the local of it, being in the middle of a very suburban shopping center. But once we enter inside, I certainly didn't feel like that at all! I'd like to state that all the food was AMAZING! It lived up to everything I wanted it to be! But how good the food was, the whole staff was even better! Very friendly and welcoming! All in all, it was one of the best dinners I've had, especially as a whole experience! Next time I'm in Austin, I look forward to coming back!

my opinion is very great place we eat at the sushi bar and talking with the chefs they are Super friendly and make Amazing sushi with a quality incredible, i want say the price was fair for this amazing quality.
the only think the waiter was to much, he try to much to push us to take a lot anyway when nobody look at him and don't ask him anythink but we forget that because of the 2 fantastic chefs we gonna back for sure.
PS: Great place for a Date.

Bday dinner spot
We had a great dinner and the chef personally came out to tell us about the food. I can't wait to go back. We tried a little bit of everything.

Must go here!
Soto was an amazing experience. We started with delicious cocktails at the bar. We did the chef's choice menu which included several courses of surprises, all of which were full of flavor and beautiful to look at. We had food presented to us in an ice block and on fire! The service was amazing, and we can't wait to go again.

See Yelp - my review was too lengthy to post here...might want to expand on that.
7/2/2013 4:00:00 PM
Amazing sushi find!
I believe Soto has put other sushi places on the offense now. What an amazing menu and new concepts on showcasing each type of fish. We will be back!

Much-needed new spin on sushi
For starters don't let the location, shoved between a Party Town and a fabric place, fool you. This is not your average sushi place.
If you're looking for the standards like rainbow, dragon, or spider rolls, you won't find them on the menu. Instead you will find amazing chef's creations that please the palate and other senses too. The appetizer was sashimi-grade White Salmon with truffles that was as amazing to look at as it was to consume. Followed by the Truffle Maki (roll) with shrimp, seared Hamachi, white truffle and sturgeon caviar, and other equally interesting spicy scallop roll. Both were outstanding. Desert was a green tea crème brulee paired with green tea ice cream.
A little pricy, but well worth it. Will be back soon!

Better than Uchi - yes, I said it
Great food- looks beautiful and tastes great! Chef Andy is the best. Ask for the oyster shooters- delicious. Some ingredients sound odd- don't be scared, it will taste like heaven. The foie gras 'sushi' is to die for. I'm not kidding.
7/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Yes it's in cedar park
Absolutely amazing meal. We had a tasting dinner and I can honestly compare it to uchi or uchiko
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Sushi and Japanese variety
This is what it looks like when a restaurant tries to
Take some of Uchi/ Uchiko customer base. They offer way better service and
take just as much pride in their menu as the formentioned.
We had a 3 course meal and two bar drinks for 100.00. I feel like
It was a little steep for sushi, but it was a nice experience.
I recommend it at least once!
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
excellent from start to finish
We went on a Saturday night. No wait, and the service was excellent!
It was the first time I didn't have to use soy on my sushi. Really good!!!
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
The spicy tuna roll was fantastic! They flash fry the nori so it has a slight crispness. Adds a wonderful dimension to the roll.
Take advantage of happy hour to enjoy more options.
The yuku dessert was quite simply the best dessert I've had in a while. Citrusy blast to clear the palate. Divine!
8/20/2013 5:00:00 PM
The food was very good. The staff was quite attentive and they paid special heed to an allergy concern. One of the chef's even came to our table to make sure every thing was fine. We will definitely go back.
8/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazingly fresh. Unique flavors.
Living in NW Austin, my husband and I usually head down south on date night, but after reading the reviews of Soto we decided to give it a try, and WOW were we glad we did. We asked to sit at the sushi bar, and at the recommendation of Chef Teddy who served us, we went with the Chef's choice sushi tasting. We were not disappointed. Each piece was so fresh and the flavor profiles were really unique. Our favorite bites were the hamachi, the toro, the salmon, and the foie gras (!) - who would have thought? The server was very knowledgeable and friendly. You'd never know from the location it would be so elegant and fun inside, but it is - dark and subtle and just the right noise level. Great discovery.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great sushi spot
The food and service are excellent. You will enjoy your experience.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
One worth saving for...
We were pleasantly surprised by the decor, excellent lighting and humble but perfectly executed interior of this restaurant. You'd never know you were in a strip mall once you're in the door. Our server was on point and despite recommending the obvious and most expensive options on the menu our glasses were kept full and he paced the meal perfectly. The food was fantastic. The amuse bouche was subtle and clean, the daily featured appetizer (white tuna and truffle heaven) was out of this world, the entree was clean but generous when it comes to sashimi. Given the budget we would have taken advantage of the $100 per person minimum chef's choice dinner which boasted 7 courses. Maybe next time- because there will very likely be a next time.
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
We dined at Soto for the third time this month, since first trying the newest neighborhood gem. The food is delicious! We were pleasantly surprised the first time, when walking behind the entry doors to discover this fabulous new restaurant. The ambience is perfect. Diners can actually have a conversation and the surroundings are extremely pleasant. The service is extremely good. Each time we have gone, we feel extremely satisfied when walking out the door is to leave, and looking forward to our next visit.

Take a picture, it lasts longer
Food so pretty it's hard to eat, but everything is so delicious you'll scrape the plate clean. Cocktails are colorful works of mixology art. The presentation of dishes is amazing. The Fire Salmon is totally unique and a showstopper. The maki rolls are beautifully done and the desserts are so incredible, it will nearly bring tears to your eyes when every last bite has been digested. Try NOT to take a food picture here, it's virtually impossible.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
We love this restaurant. The sushi is one of the best in Austin.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Soto provides an unusual variety of fresh, delicious fish presented beautifully in both traditional and innovative preparations. Don't be put off by the strip-mall location. The restaurant is attractively designed and the service is very good as well. We'll be back soon!

The best food find in Austin.
The best food find in Austin. All your senses are tickled by the exceptional creations of Chef Andy. I did visit the restaurant twice during my last stay in Austin. My European guests had traveled many times to Japan but could not remember eating such fantastic food while in Japan. We ordered the Omakase and savored surprise dishes after surprise dishes of extremely fresh seafood combinations. The best way of ordering to experience the chef’s many talents. Good wine selection at a reasonable price. I will be back on my next trip to Austin.
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
I recieved a gift certificate for my birthday to Soto because I am a sushi lover. I was NOT disappointed in Soto at all! Other than difficulties finding it, it's not where you would expect to find it, I loved the entire experience!
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Soto is amazing!
Incredible food, wonderful staff!!! The sushi is literally the best I've ever had. Definitely give their specialty cocktails a try! We love this place and go as much as we can!!!

One of best Japanese restaurants
I have sampled fine Japanese cuisine in Tokyo, San Francisco , New York, Etc. Soto is up there with the best from any of them! We had the 7 course chef choice menu and it was a culinary experience. Sushi is exceptional and prepared in creative ways that fufil all your senses.

BEST RESTAURANT IN AUSTIN
I am still in shock. To find a restaurant of this caliber in this area is like winning the lottery.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've made a reservation for a lunch to celebrate my wife's birthday. 4 adults and 1 toddler. Food and service were great. Desert was also delicious.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
I RECOMMEND IT!!!!
My husband and I had lunch here and it was completely PERFECT. We did a lot of sushi (fatty salmon, toro, uni, unagi), one roll (Soto Maki), two entrees (Katsu and Katsudon). Everything was very tasty and presented quite nicely - particularly our sushi plate! The sushi chef made a couple of special rolls for my husband - one with quail egg and roe, and one with white salmon and truffle oil. He LOVED them.
We will DEFINITELY go back as often as we can!
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
One of the best sushi places ever
This was hands-down one of the best places I've ever been to. The food is phenomenal. The servants are knowledgeable about the cuisine and very friendly without being annoying. It's not a cheep place. We walked away with $170 tab for three people (and we were frugal). But it was worth every penny. If you have a special occasion coming up or just want to take somebody special to some place special, this is the place to go to.
11/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
Finally A Good Restaurant Out Here
Best restaurant in the area by far since Spin no longer is open.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
Thank God For Soto
My life is now complete. Eating at Soto every week is the icing on the cake of life.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
So glad we found this gem
Worth the short drive in Austin to find this wonderful restaurant a little to the NW. Not too far. Well worth it.
Knowledgeable waiters, incredible chefs plate sushi, craft cocktails and impressive presentation. The ambiance is conducive to conversation and not too close to the neighboring diners. The indirect lighting and textured walls are inspired and cleverly designed.
Did not get to use the really cool private dining room in the back, but made a mental note to consider the room in the future for a special occasion.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Outstanding sushi! My wife
Outstanding sushi! My wife and I had a great time at Soto. We especially liked the fact that the sushi wasn't "ordinary". Yes it was high-quality, but the way the chef's added ingredients, like a small wedge of lime, a thin strawberry slice, a drop of sauce, etc truly enhanced the flavor and the dining experience. Great ambiance and excellent food and service! Definitely not inexpensive, but worth every penny. I would highly recommend.
11/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
A form of art
Soto truly takes pride in their food, presentation and service. Everything about this place is top-notch and I feel like I'm dining downtown. The service is fantastic, the dishes are unique and the presentations are unlike any I've seen before. Whether you're looking for casual sushi or dishes with elegance and flair, Soto should be on your list. I highly recommend the flaming salmon on a lemongrass skewer!

This is the place for Sushi!!!
I loved it from the moment I walked in! You will never know how nice it is until you walk into the restaurant. Service is great and the food is excellent! Great quality sushi and awesome presentations!! I would definitely recommend this place to everybody who loves real sushi!! The homemade desserts are wonderful as well. Best Sushi restaurant in Austin!!
