Visited during Restaurant
Visited during Restaurant Week in Sonoma County and we enjoyed the choices of the fixed price menu. Food was above expectations and ambiance was terrific. I will return and return with friends. Unusual to find Mexican with flair and diversity. Only downside was a rather lackluster Margarita...so so.

Imaginative food, good service
We went on a Sunday evening, and found the place very quiet--only a few diners--even though it was the last night of Restaurant Week. Service was friendly and attentive, and staff seemed very knowledgeable about the food. My grilled orange salad was unique; an imaginative blend of sweet-sour-salty with slightly bitter undertones, but all together it worked well. My only complaint was that the sliced oranges were full of pits: there was a pile of them when I finished, and I was surprised they didn't pull them out. Really enjoyed the spicy shredded lamb enchiladas w/ fresh duck egg in molé sauce. The dessert, a combo flan with sticky bun, was good but not amazing.

All the food was excellent
All the food was excellent with fantastic layering of flavors. Authentic Yucatan food which we can't get back east. Servers were very knowledgeable and attentive. Highly recommend.

Sustainable LAtin food with a flair
Finally a Latin restaurant that devotes itself to fresh, sustainable ingredients...and Mateo does it with such a creative flair! Favortie dishes: tacones - taco cones with scrumptious fillings; shredded pork marinated with achiote and pumpkin seeds topped with pickled red onions and cinnamon along with rice and microgreens. Tortillas are made fresh....and the aqua frescas are always seasonal. Service is top notch and very good at describing all dishes should you have any questions. Also - don't miss the phenomenal selection of tequilas....but get a designated driver so you can really let loose:)

Mateo's is definitely a gem.
Mateo's is definitely a gem. It is really fun to dine there for lunch or dinner. The extensive tequila list is quite impressive and the margaritas wonderful. The cuisine is definitely not your standard "Mexican" fare. The tamales and guacamole are among the best we have ever had. Mateo pays careful attention to what is fresh, seasonal and local. If you are visiting Healdsburg it is a great place to stop.

Dinner for 3.
Enjoyed dinner and the many interesting flavors created by sauces, salsas, dressings etc. Was surprised at how quickly the tab added up however. For 3 of us with only one medium priced wine........the tab together with the tip was $180 and that seemed a bit much. Ambiance was very comfortable and the service fantastic. Our waitress really knew the menu. The produce was all very very fresh.

Delicious and fresh and fun
Mateo butcher's his own meat and makes everything from scratch using local and homegrown ingredients. It is authentic, casual, with a wonderful patio, and has really interesting flavorful food. Try the margarita caliente with the fresh fish - a great combo. Our new favorite place!

Delicious food, prepared with
Delicious food, prepared with care and a lot of flavor. The freshness of the ingredients and the recipes themselves are a treat. Presentation is also beautiful. You can't go wrong with any of the dishes- althugh the myago oyster salad appetizer and the Cocinita Pibit entree are outstanding.

I went to Cocina Latina dreaming
I went to Cocina Latina dreaming of the food that my grandma made when I was growing up. I wasn't disappointed as the Yucatan empanadas and panuchos were on the menu as well as the best huevos rancheros ever and a fantastic margarita. I wish that we had room to try more dishes and we will definitely be back! We sat in the back courtyard which is so pretty. The servies was perfect too. Don't miss this gem!

This was not my first visit there but each time is better than than last. Getting to try different items on the menu has been a pleasant surprise,.

We enjoyed our evening. The only sore poiunt was that when we arrived we were told no outdoor setaing was available. I pointed out that it wa sincluded in our reservation request, the maitre de had clearly not read it. I had to point out that the request indicated it was my birthday, and that we preferred to be setaed outside. He finally agreed and sat us at one of many open table outside. As the night progressed, more open tables outside beacme available. I have no idea what the maitre de wa sthinking. Otherwise we njoyed the evening.

Great as always!!
We always love dining here. The food is outstanding, you will never be disappointed. Suggest reservations as they are a busy place.

Maybe too Nueva Latina?
Most dishes were good to very good, but some are pushed too far just to be 'nueva,', different. The olive oil guacamole is not a big deal; good guac, nothing special, good crackers, also nothing special though. The cucumber soup we had (a special that night) was also good, but mostly foam on the top w/ little actual soup underneath; worth maybe $8, not the 14 they charge. The standard margarita was $9 and was good, but again not special. The cochinita pibil entree, however, was really good and worth the money, but they only bring 2 small tortillas at first. The special Burnt Peach Salad--I think maybe it was too early in the season? because the peaches weren't especially ripe or sweet and we expected them to be grilled, or something.

Surprise and then surpass.
Imagine our SERVER'S SURPRISE when, after running through the varieties of their three main meats, we said, "Sorry we're vegans." We had a little trouble communicating with the server initially about what might make sense for us (other than a salad). The server went away, while we stayed relaxed with low expectations. Then Mateo came out and we weren't entirely sure what we agreed to. But we discussed all the great local produce he uses and anything from that fare would make us happy. Subsequently a plate of three truly delicious dishes came out. We liked it so much that we asked the server to bring another, thinking that we would be happily filled to the gills. Now, imagine OUR SURPRISE when the main vegan feast arrived. Truly FAB!

This place was not very crowded for a Friday night but the food was excellent! It's a more casual place - easy going, not formal or "foodie". Just good food served fast. Looked like they had a nice outdoor area but it was booked for a private party so we did not get to check it out.

Great Food, Small Portions
The food was excellent, but items listed as entrees were not enough to be considered a complete meal, such as the shrimp tostada. Very small portion sizes for some of the appetizer items, considering the price.

First-time a big hit
We dined early (5:00) and had a great table outside. Ravines, Yucatan tostada, salmon entree all great. Wonderful flavored.

Interesting food from the Yucatan
Definitely not your average Mexican restaurant. Food is creative, original and beautifully presented. Ingredients are fresh and delicious. Waitstaff is unobtrusively available, helpful and friendly. Decor is artistic and interesting. Great overall experience. Every time we take a friend to try it out, they love it too. This restaurant has class and substance and kindness, unlike several of the snooty, overpriced Healdsburg restaurants that have disappointed us in the past.
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
unusual and creative food
sit out back with a view of he indoor and outdoor kitchens. Mateo is there cooking his creations. loved the server especially her salsa display.
will go back and bring friends.

Mateo's was very good -- and
Mateo's was very good -- and very creative. Even things that sound mundane are made different and interesting. The service was mixed -- a bit chaotic at times, and in particular the busser came up to clear plates even when we weren't finished, and in a manner that was not exactly apologetic about making us feel rushed. The room is cute, and the outdoor patio looks nice. It is all hard surfaces and thus very loud. Overall feel is more casual that the quality of the food could demand. Note that with doors open front and back it was a bit cool on a cool evening (and we've had lots of cool evenings), so bring a wrap or jacket.

Lovely Spot. Special Treat.
My husband and I had brunch at Mateo's. Beautiful indoors and out. Guacamole and special crackers were tasty as we're margaritas. We both enjoyed our special egg dishes. Want to go back for dinner.

I cannot believe I could go so nuts over corn but this restaurant makes the most delicious corn on the cob I have ever eaten. The topping that has asiago cheese on it is over the top fabulous. Wed special BBQ is great also.
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food. Great patio. Great service. I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Mexican food at its best
This gem of a restaurant has quality Mexican food. Made with healthy ingredients and presented beautifully, it was a true treat to enjoy with good friends on Saturday evening. We shared guacamole to begin, and it was to die for. Our entrees were delicious.
The atmosphere is entertaining but not overpowering.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
The experience at Mateo's is a delight for the senses! The ambiance is extremely attractive, yet casual. The food is expertly flavorful and surprisingly different, in a very yummy way, than one's typical Latino food of the past. Bravo, Mateo!
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Each dish has unique, distinctive seasoning. Not typical Mexican fare.A bit pricey, smallish portions. Especially the Prawns, and guacamole side - way too much olive oil. House tortilla crackers with pumpkin seed are addictive. Great cocktails - unique flavor combinations. Refreshing, A real plus to get a Margarita that was not too sweet, not blended and no salted rim on the glass- without asking for any of those things.Blue tortilla dessert filled with vanilla ice cream, covered in fresh seasonal fruit was awesome. Go early on a weekday - not crowded and you can actually have a conversation. A bit heavy on the meat emphasis. We went when they first opened - not impressed. Glad we tried again - will return. Garden seating is lovely.

Had my son's Welcome Dinner the day before his wedding for 100 people at Mateo's. What a wonderful time everyone had. The food was superior and the service was outstanding. The appetizers were served in a very unique way and presented beautifully. The drinks were delicious and they were pouring real liquor. Can't thank David enough for putting together such a memorable night for all of us. Mateo's creations were absolutely wonderful. I would highly recommend Mateo's.

Worth the Second Chance
This was our second visit, after being underwhelmed on our first visit. This visit lived up to the reviews we've seen. The food and service was great. Very creative menu.

Mexican cuisine with some soul
Go eat here. I had my first dinner at Mateo's based on recommendations from some local friends. It was a treat. Our starter and main courses were excellent - earthy, interesting and subtle flavors.
Service was off though - too few wait staff, gaps in availability. Sticky bun flan dessert was surprisingly bland after the high notes of our savory courses - we didn't finish it.
If next visit's service experience is fixed, it'll be a 5-star night.
9/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
The agua fresca, huevos rancheros and blue corn pancakes with ice cream were unbelievably delicious. We also had a wonderful fig, mint and tomato salad. Fresh, well balanced flavors. Great brunch on the patio. Can't wait to go back!

good food, good outdoor seating
good food, good outdoor seating area and friendly service. A bit pricey ... but overall a good meal.

An Adventure with Latin Flavors
We were treated to menu with many items not usually found on menus with food south of the border. It was not the typical burrito restaurant. Imagine a lamb taco!
The salads with fresh ingredients with grilled peaches and figs was a hit at our table.
We enjoyed having beer on tap. Excitement was at our table when a friend saw Negra Modelo, rarely in draft form, was available.
9/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
This restaurant is NOT Tex-Mex, nor is it colonial Mexican. It is primarily Yucatan Mexican food, with a creative flair and superb presentation. Lots of seafood dishes on the menu. We enjoyed all the dishes our group of four ordered. We started with ceviche and oysters. Two of us had the mussels, octopus, and shrimp special (the spicy red sauce was amazing). The service was outstanding. The drink menu is exceptional. We ate outdoors and the evening weather was perfect. This place is a must-try restaurant in Healdsburg (a town loaded with good eateries).

My elderly godmother and I had a delightful dinner at Mateo's. They set us up outside since we wanted a quiet spot. It was lovely. Nice lighting, good visuals. Brought over heater and made sure we were comfy. Great service. Food is locally sourced, cooked with loving care and always interesting and delicious. Best part for me were the beet greens that came with my fish and chicken tacos. Could have eaten an entire plate full. When my godmother' gently complained that her dinner was not really hot enough, they readily took it back and redid. Clearly did not just put it in a microwave!

*Real* Mexican food
Our first visit in Mateo's was delightful. Very good, authentic, *Mexican* (not Mexican-American, or Cal-Mex, or Tex-Mex) food. Yucatecan food, in fact. I truly hope foodies try this place, and this food. Yucatecan food is one of the most interesting regionales cuisines in Mexico (along with comida Poblana and Oaxaquena). It shines here, among other things due to the high quality of the ingredients. We ordered extensively from the menu: tacones (pan de cazon, and frijoles con chorizo); ceviche (delightful); panucho, topped with pibil or annato chicken (the best dish, I think); fish taco; lamb taco.
The one weak spot: a truly terrible flan, that should have never left the kitchen.
9/28/2013 5:00:00 PM
Very different, high quality ingredients, unusual and delicious food. Not a usual Mexican restaurant cuisine. We spent $100 for two including the tip.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent cocktails, refreshing and addictive. Very pleasant sitting out in the patio. Very good ceviche and guacamole as starter courses. Delightful fresh chips with a variety of crunchy seeds. However, the main courses were overcooked & dry.

A cut above!
Great food!! Not your typical Mexican restaurant. Excellent Yucatecan food - every bit as good as I've had in the Yucatan. If you want just plain old boring Mexican, this is not the place. But if you want a true Mexican food experience, this is it! They have a fantastic selection of tequilas and an extremely knowledgeable staff.
I'll definitely go back next time I'm in Healdsburg. Highly recommended.

Fun place to dine
We had never had food from the Yucatan region, so it was great to try something new and different than you get at a lot of places in Wine Country. The food and drinks were delicious and the service was great. We would definitely go back.

Not Your Average Mexican Restauran
We were looking for a place that had recognizable dishes with flare. Some of the choices in Healdsburg were otherwise too exotic for my friend, and I don't eat nettles. No basket of tortilla chips; the long crispy pumpkin seed crackers were divine, you need to ask for them (there's a small charge). My friend loved her lamb tacos and I had the best pork, slow-roasted suckling pig served with Middleton Farm cinnamon-cured red onions. Both dishes were well presented with perfectly cooked vegetables and home made tortillas. We did not have room for dessert. The glitch in the service was that the waitress brought the wrong dish. However, I did not wait long for the right one.

Real Mexican food
It's local, it's authentic, it's delicious. A real find in Healdsburg. Lovely patio which is very inviting. Drinks are excellent. But the food is really outstanding. Ceviche was delicious and the tacos were memorable. Beautifully cooked pork and crusted rock cod and lamb tacos were all outstanding. I heartily recommend it.
