Lovely decor, great food and drinks
I loved the vinegreet with beef stroganoff. The ambiance was lovely, but they played the accordion SO loudly we had to cease our conversation for 5-min until they stopped. Then they resumed it again 10-min later at the fullest volume. It killed the mood for us. The drinks were very tasty - white sangria and strawberry martini. The servers were all Russian. The decor of the restaurant is very swanky meets authentic. I definitely would go back!

We ate at Mari Vanna right
We ate at Mari Vanna right when it opened in January. The food was good but the service was horrible. This time, the food was even better and the service terrific. We definitely will return. An unexpectedly enjoyable evening. Stay for the music...

We went with friends for a fun dinner out and really had a great evening. The food was great - cabbage rolls, belinis, and smoked fish stood out, and the beef stroganoff was also very good. The infused vodka and cocktails made with the infused vodka were great - and quite potent. Atmosphere was festive with occassional accordian music. Several large groups made the room we were in a bit loud, but not so loud that we couldn't have a conversation with our friends. Service was friendly and attentive, and the waitress had plenty of good recommendations for those of us new to Russian cuisine. All in all, we loved this place and are even considering going back next weekend!

A nice change of pace
Mari Vanni was delightful. I nice change from the usual fare. Our waitress answered our many questions about the dishes. The herring was a stand-out!

Makes a good first impression
My girlfriend and I tried Mari Vanna after a Smithsonian lecture and were delighted with the tasty food and inventive drinks. She found her mushroom soup so filling that she took her blinis home, where she reported they provided a delcious breakfast. Her soup was reheated at her request, which the cool Russian one I had didn't require. The Beef Stroganoff seemed like it might be the coward's dish, but proved outstanding -- especially the accompanying buckwheat. My girlfriend noted that I didn't compliment the entree when the attentive waitress asked how things were and I replied that I thought the fact I thoroughly cleaned my plate spoke for itself.
We liked the vodkas with pineapple, horseradish, and cucumber-dill infusions.

Great - even if you're not Russian
loved the decor...made me feel as if I was in someone's home as opposed to a busy restaurant. Great service -- server gave good suggestions and offered assistance when needed but was not intrusive. Definitely would go back.

High energy- dynamic!
I am so happy we left the "burbs" for this friendly, fun, young scene filled with beautiful people! In the space of one dinner we saw a "proposal", some of the most striking looking people I have seen in DC in a long time and EVERYONE having a good time..fueled by a highly energetic accordionist...oh yes....and food and drink...infused vodka was a real treat as was Georgian wine..A broad menu of interesting things lent itself to sharing appetizers and pelmeni/varenike (let's call it ' pasta') courses before the entrees. Desserts were outstanding! Honey cake is unique....and to die for!

This totally charming restaurant
This totally charming restaurant has delicious food and lovely surroundings. The Russian décor and menu would be appealing to everyone.
The food here is orders of magnitude better than in St Petersburg! Wish we had tried Mari Vanna there!!
We shall return!

Charming - Authentic!
Mari Vanna is a little piece of Russia in downtown DC. It is decorated inside and out like a cozy communal apartment in Moscow. We went on Tuesday night which features Pelimeni, very authentic Russian dumplings with sour creak. We also had peroshki and blini and deserts including "Bird's Milk", a cake desert. Service was great, staff spoke great Russian and English. Tables upstairs are more cozy for dining, downstairs is fun but is adjacent to the bar. Lots of vodkas, including infused ones, and a long cocktail list. Our evening was fantastic, highly recommended. This authentic experience does come with a price, and we paid about $100.00 per head for a group of 6, but for three hours of great entertainment and food it was well worth it.
7/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
A friend recommend Mari Vanna because the good was good. Not only was the food excellent, but the service was spectacular--friendly, engaging, authentic and knowledgable. I will certainly be back.

Something different and lots of fun
With Mari Vanna, we had not only a delicious meal, but also a delightful experience. Clearly, a lot of thought went into not only the cuisine, but also the decor, the signage, even the website. Together, it all made for an unusual and enjoyable taste of a Russian home. We love infused vodka, and this place has lots of flavors to choose from. We started with horseradish, then switched to honey and oats. We had herring, eggplant rolls, several kinds of pelmeni (dumplings); finished up with an assortment of the desserts -- each one a treat. There is lots more on the menu to explore. We look forward to coming back soon.

Great Dining Experience!
You walk up to this quaint entrance and enter into a wonderful restaurant. It has been decorated in a trendy elegance with a comfortable feel. It is a small space so you will be cosy with your neighbor. The food was and drinks were amazing. Definitely get an infused vodka shot - the favorites at the table were black current and pear! The servers were great and will offer helpful food selections. The food sizes for the appetizer and main course are sized for one but the desserts are large - more for sharing. Don't forget to clap along with accordian player who cames out to entertain all the diners every once and awhile.

I took my wife here for dinner to celebrate her birthday so we could enjoy Russian food and see just how authentic it is. My wife is originally from Ukraine and we are used to getting great Russian food in Brooklyn. The service was great, the server was very knowledgeable about the menu and very friendly, and the food was fantastic. My wife said her Golubci was delicious and her Kiev Cake reminded her of growing up since she hasn't had it in years. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant for real Russian food and an enjoyable experience.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
It is one of the best restaurant in DC! Real Russian food and atmosphere! Everyone should go.
8/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
High quality and great fun!
The food was excellent and the ambience was superb. We could have used a little more advice when ordering as we ordered too much food. We ate it nevertheless.

Lunch on the Volga
I had a very good lunch with colleagues. I had been before but the rest had not. We all enjoyed the meal and the ambience. We opted for the prix fixe lunch. Service was excellent and prompt. I informed the charming Russian waitress that we had a time constraints for some in the group, and she took care to take care of us. We had a good conversation (not about work) and ended with complimentary shots that put us all in a jovial mood as we took ourselves back to the office grind. Recommend to all those office warriors who need a real lunch break!
Though I have not had lunch on the Volga, I could easily imagine it with this authentic Russian dining experience at Mari Vanna.

Delicious and fun
The food was simple and delicious. Great spicy mustard with our appetizer, and the pickled herring was delicious. We really loved the accordion player that intermittently played songs and the 3rd floor late night bar with dancing was lively.

Mari Vanna is a lovely restaurant
Mari Vanna is a lovely restaurant Décor is lovely. Wait staff are attentive and nice. The food is very good and well prepared Live Russian music for Sunday brunch!. I was not familiar with Russian food and I loved everything I ate.

Awesome Sunday brunch option
We had a lovely brunch Sunday morning! The bottomless mimosas for ladies is a nice touch. All of the food was delicious -- it's not labeled so you do get to interact with their staff, who are more than happy to tell you about their offerings. Might have a tough time if you don't eat meat or fish, not a lot of veggie-only options. Would have preferred to sit on the ground floor, than upstairs, so will request that next time. Thought at first it was because the smaller tables were all upstairs, but leaving we saw plenty of groups of 2 seated at the tables on ground level. Service was a little slow, such as getting water refills or coffee refilled (which never happened).

I returned for a second time
I returned for a second time with friends who actually know something about the food. They were in heaven. They had the stroganoff, cabbage roll, fish plate, meat plate, soups and four different deserts. The waitress was lovely. Great place.

It was for my best friend's
It was for my best friend's birthday dinner. They made it very special for us - singing a russian happy birthday song and the cake was delicious! :)
8/21/2013 5:00:00 PM
If you enjoy Russian cuisine this place is solid. Food was good, decor was fun and delightfully mismatched and accordion player was really enthusiastic. Both cocktails we had were tasty and left the restaurant stuffed. Would go again.
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
I as very disappointed to find out that the restaurant did not acknowledge my son's birthday. I had set this dinner up a week in advance. I got the reservation that I wanted, and then followed up a day prior to make sure it was set. I spoke to someone on the phone who even noticed it was for his 21st birthday. She proceeded to tell me what they do for birthdays and it was all set up. I found out afterwards that nothing was done at all for his birthday. So I was extremely disappointed that it was forgotten even though it was written down. Other than that, they both said they enjoyed their dinner and the restaurant.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
If you're looking for something different than the usual fare, try this Russian gem. Tastefully and deliciously decorated throughout and authentic with a twist. Great bar downstairs and upstairs. A strolling up tempo accordion player tops it off. For the adventurous, karaoke awaits on the third level, featuring comfortable and plush sofas and chairs and the second bar.
9/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Took my gf here as she is of Russian descent. Great vodka selection and tasty Russian dishes.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Almost a disaster
I made a 9:30 PM reservation for a solo dinner at Mari Vanna for after the one-person show "Bell" at the National Geographic Society a block away. When I arrived early, I was told I just made the 9 PM last call for kitchen orders -- not mentioned on the restaurant's webpage or Open Table.
The Siberian dumplings and buck wheat side dish made a delicious meal, while the flavored vodkas -- especially the new red pepper one -- were fantastic.
9/11/2013 5:00:00 PM
We had a great time. I brought my American in laws to Mari Vanna (it was their first time to Russian restaurant) and they loved it. Everything was great from dinning room decor to friendly servers! Do not miss their desserts; Napoleon and Birds Milk cake were delicious. Highly recommend this place for special occasion!
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, Delicious infused vodka
I love this place!!! Where else can you get infused vodka, a great atmosphere, and delicious Russian food. It's more on the gourmet side then authenic but who cares the food is mouth watering delicious! :)
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love that vodka!
Mari Vanna is destination dining. The delicious cuisine, the decor, the gracious staff -- all make for a distinctive, memorable experience. And for me, the infused vodkas are reason enough to visit. My goal is to taste each variety on the list.
9/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Just like my days in another Russia
The food was Supurb! Pelmini just like cafe Pushkin and Golupci shockingly similar to Mama Zoya's. We loved it and will be back very soon!
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great for birthdays!
Took my husband here with some friends for his birthday. I told them ahead of time and they never forgot. We not only had a great time but they surprised us with a delicious dessert and had half the wait staff sing to us. What a fun night! Food is authentic and delicious...love the beef stroganoff!
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love this place!
I suggested Mari Vanna for a dinner with some out of town friends. It was just a fantastic dining experience. The food excellent, the service great, and we loved the accordion player! The only thing I would suggest would be to not get the cookie for dessert. There are so many other excellent options and these are just not par with the restaurant's other offerings.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Unique dinning experience.
Unique dinning experience. Authentic food and surroundings. Live accordion music the night we were there. Service was slightly slow but very professional. Place was packed which may explain speed of service. Unique vodka selections. Would dine here again.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, cool place
Must stop place when visiting DC ... food, service and atmosphere are just outstanding!
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
This restaurant was one of the most beautiful, charming, cozy places I have dined. It is just very special. The food was awesome and the wait staff should be commended.
They were so friendly and very efficient. They really know the food items they serve. The vodka was superb. I want to go back for the holiday season as I imagine it will be magical.
Everyone in our party was impressed and they all said they will return to try many more new dishes. The cold eggplant rolls were so delicious. The pumpkins soup was amazing. Do not miss the stroganoff.
Do yourself a favor and visit this gem in D.C.

Excellent atmosphere and food!
I went here on a Tuesday night with my husband and we both loved everything we tried. The polmeni on Tuesday is no delicious and not to be missed, as is their lamb shank. Great food paired with a great atmosphere!
10/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Special little restaurant
We found this place when visiting DC. What a great little restaurant. They serve authentic Russian food, well done and served in polish pottery dishes. the setting was like sitting in my grandmothers living room. Loved it. Staff was very friendly and made us feel special. Place seats quite a few but the way it is set up it didn't feel busy. Vodka shots were great. A really fun place to go, would definitely go again.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fun Atmosphere, Portions Too Large
This restaurant is very fun, and the food is very good. The fruit lemonades are outstanding. My one criticism is that the portions are too large, which detracts from the overall experience. The salads should be half their size, because they are not really appropriate as a first course. Also, the beef stew with prunes was excellent, but again too large.
10/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent Russian food!
Excellent Russian food, great atmosphere, friendly staff and pleasant decor.

Loved Mari Vanna
Good food in a beautiful setting at a reasonable (for Washington) price. We had a great business meeting over delicious Russina food. Service was attentive. Noise level was low. Can't wait to try the brunch.
10/30/2013 5:00:00 PM
Wow- you need to try this place
A little confused by the locked door - until we understood we were dining in Mari Vanna's home! Ring the doorbell. Great flavor in substantial dishes -of course, it's Russian. Knowledgable, friendly, unobtrusive service. Loud (which we don't usually like), but it fit. Great food, great evening. You've got to try this place! We will certainly be back.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, free mimosas for ladies. Already planning return trip.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
Good food/ OK hospitality
Went there for brunch with a friend after an hour when we were still eating they started telling us that that table was reserved for someone else and we would have to move to another table. We also had a reservation and we had only been there for an hour. They asked us if we could change tables if we wanted to stay longer or we had to leave before 20 minutes. We stayed on that table and before the 20 minutes they had mentioned they kept rushing us to go. For a $30 brunch place I think this is unacceptable and just not hospitable. I enjoyed the food very much but this incident would make me consider going back or recommending it.
11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
Another great meal
We as well as our kids love this restaurant. The food is consistently good. It tastes just like it was grown, picked, and cooked all within a day. Some of the freshest tasting food in DC. The atmosphere is warm and the service is always attentive.
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
Loved It !
We had a great time at Mari Vanna. Four of us went and we ordered mostly different things so that we could get a variety of tastes. The potato dumplings are a don't miss !
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great experience but pricey
Delicious but pricey - a bit too much for very simple dishes. My babushka would never believe such simple could sell at this price, yet the experience and quality of food/service are totally worth it. Also be aware - alcohol is delicious but also overpriced...
