Celebrated my mother's 82nd
Celebrated my mother's 82nd birthday here. Very attentive and no problem bringing our own birthday cake. The food is great but the waiters and service really are the best.

We were delighted to find
We were delighted to find a special Sunday pre-fixe menu, which included very reasonably priced wines by the glass. Many choices, especially of appetizers. We had a great time.

We had the prix-fixe pre-theater
We had the prix-fixe pre-theater dinner. The price was right, the food was terrific. I had coq au vin and my colleague had pasta pomodoro. Both had delicious asparagus soup and good chocolate mousse. We had to compete with a loud party of 35, but the extra wait was minimal.

As always, Cafe Du Soleil
As always, Cafe Du Soleil was an enjoyable evening!

A little noisy, menu could be more extensive but otherwise fine. The maitre'd, probably the owner, was a bit aloof - he became friendly and amiable when he found French diners he could talk to but was otherwise formal and unsmiling.

Pre-Theatre Menu is a bargain. Excellent mussels and garlic fries. Soupe de jour was a very good cold cucumber soup. Creme brulee was warm, not icy cold as at some places. Service was friendly, attentive and helpful. Other diners included a large group of Columbia students, and a young mother (apparently local) with a toddler and an infant who sat and ate at a sidewalk table. Good for people-watching along Broadway. Even with the group of students all talking at once plus the street noise through the open doors, the noise level was not bad. A very enjoyable early dinner.

We eat here regularly and
We eat here regularly and are never disappointed. Tonight we had a little bit of everything on the menu--escargot in a sharp garlic sauce, calamari--crisp and tender with a spicy tomato sauce. Butterflied sea bass and salmon were perfectly cooked as was the calves liver and, my very favorite--the poulet roti (simple roast chicken) with rosemary/garlic potatoes. Desserts included sorbet and gelato, a cheese plate and the outrageously delicious tarte tatin. Servers were helpful, glasses were always filled and the drinks were ice cold.
A little bit of Paris on Broadway............

Dinner at 8
Great food and excellent service. Really enjoyed the fish and seating is comfortable. Could be a tad less dark. Noise level was a little high, but manageable (not really very different from any other restaurant in NYC, unfortunately). I'll definitely go back.

Great French food
Cafe du Soleil is a neighborhood gem. In an area with few good restaurants and hardly any French restaurants this one stands out. The food and service are good. The friends who came with me liked the restaurant alot and i"m sure we will come back. It can get busy at night since it is so good and reasonable. The $21 prix fixe is really a great value so come before 6:30 pm for that.

Outstanding and creative modern French food at an affordable price.

Whole Is More Than Sum Of Parts
I always have a great experience at Cafe Du Soleil. . . but I'm not sure why. The food is fun, but not perfect -- for example, I often insist on getting the salmon burger, and then remember that it always comes out a bit dry. The service is usually slow and mistake prone. And yet, we always have smiles on our faces. Perhaps it is the atmosphere that makes us feel like we are in Provence, and the way that they always welcome us there. It is a fun place, and I highly recommend it for brunch. . . but I'm really not sure exactly why.

A bit of Provence on the UWS
It must be over ten years that this neighborhood gem opened on the Upper West Side serving the food of Provence and it still pleases. The timeless bistro decor is perfect and the wait staff coldn't be nicer. My absolute favorite is the hanger steak with a caramelized shallot reduction. Super Yummy. Their other meats and fish are also very very good, especially the various mussels preparations. For starters I always chose pate or the salmon tartare, both of which are shareable portions and delicious. Check out their website for special nights.

Good food, limited brunch menu
We've eaten here before for the regular dinner menu and it was outstanding. We decided to go early with the family to beat the Saturday night rush. The brunch menu was extremely limited. My wife had the mussels which were prepared with white wine and garlic. I had penne which had a very fresh sauce with a lot of basil. Others had the Croque Madam and a burger, both looked very good. It's reminiscent of a French-style cafe with great atmosphere and tables on the street to people watch. I was a little disappointed with selections. Go for dinner for fantastic French fare!

A bit of Paris on an early fall nig
We sat outside, and had the $25 pre-fixed Sunday night menu - generous portions of classic bistro food, well-prepared. Service was friendly and efficient. Great bread. What could be better except to remove the occasional siren.

A true favorite. Escargot
A true favorite. Escargot - garlicky and tender; gazpacho reeked of the fresh tomatoes it contained; pear and Roquefort salad always crisp and well dressed. Their roast chicken is a particular favorite served with their delicious 'frites', tuna--rare as ordered and a pasta dish was al dente in a fresh tomato sauce. Sorbet and tarte tatin completed the scrumptious meal.
It's a little piece of Paris on the West side........just terrific!

Lovely UWS French Bistro
When I visit my childhood haunts on Manhattan's Upper West Side and have a meal out with friends who live near Columbia, I often choose Cafe du Soleil. The pre-theatre three-course meal is a true bargain, but even if one dines after 6:30 p.m., there are lots of delicious and reasonably priced choices. I had a salmon burger of considerable heft served with a large green salad (instead of fries), and my friend had the sea bass special and an endive salad; we then shared the lovely apple tart with ice cream. This is a restaurant where you can hear your interlocutor speak, even when the tables nearby are occupied. The staff members are friendly but not intrusive, and if you volunteer to pay in cash, you can get a 10% reduction off the bill.

The waiter did not bring the desert menu, but I wanted desert, and they brought the check before even asking if we want desert. And I did not feel like asking the desert and making changes on the check again. If they would bring the desert menu, i would have had a desert

UWS Parisian Bistro
Lunch was an excellent value; 2 courses for $14. First courses- Escargots, Mesclun salad & Endive & Roquefort salad. Second courses-Moules Dijonaisse, Calves Liver & Coq au Vin were all well prepared and flavorful. Glass of Sauvignon Blanc- $6. Portions were more than adequate. We plan to go back on Friday night when they have Jazz & Dinner Special $59. for 2 people.

They have introduced a jazz
They have introduced a jazz vocalist on some weekend nights, which is a nice addition, but the noise is so loud in the restaurant that we could hardly heard the music. Furthermore, the lighting for the music trio was so bad that it was impossible to see them from across the room. Food and pricing is always good here, but we're a bit disappointed by how the music has been handled.

I was visiting my son in NewYork and happened to see the restaurant walking to the subway. I looked up reviews and was thrilled to find it was rated highly. Thus was a perfect place to enjoy our last evening before my trip back home the next day.

Wonderful, attentive service from a terrific staff. Lovely menu options.... Great food at a great price. We enjoyed our meal thoroughly! Pretty stuff hanging around the walls kept it interesting, too!!

Back on track
After a short downturn, Cafe Du Soleil is back on track. The kitchen has gotten its act together, and it is again a pleasure to dine there.
