Our Wedding Dinner
We got married on 12-12-12 nearby on the beach and decided to have dinner at 1919 to celebrate the occasion. We couldn't have picked a better place. Every member of the staff made the occasion that much better. They prepared us a tasting course not on the menu and everything was exquisite! We're talking four courses of chocolate! The wine list is extensive and we got a great Spanish red. It was by far the best restaurant we went to in Puerto Rico. Very well done!

A TOP FINE DINING EXPERIENCE
My review after my first visit to 1919 was all 5 stars, outstanding in every way. At that time I said that 1919 is "certainly one of Puerto Rico's best!... Highly recommended".
Thus, on my second visit my expectations were very high. And 1919 was even better than the first time. My friend and I each ordered a four course prix fixe dinner, in which we were able to choose among several alternatives for each course. All dishes served to both of us were outstanding, extraordinary, as was also the service that we received from captain Eduardo and his team. In what he does, Eduardo is the best.
1919 is Puerto Rico's top restaurant for truly fine dining; and it compares favorably with top restaurants in Paris and New York. Do not miss 1919.

Wonderful experience. Staff was very attentive. Eduardo the captain was very entertaining. We had the chefs tasting menu and most of the dishes were very good. Wine pairing was spot on except for one course. Will be back.

i was wowed from the moment
i was wowed from the moment the valet opened my car door. the level of attention is amazing without being fastidious. we opted for the chef's choice (where we told the waiter what we don't like went off menu) and highly recommend it.

First Visit. Lots to say.. The room and hotel lobby are Gorgeous. Service was Fantastic 6 of us each got the Prixe Fixe at $70. First encounter was the Champagne offerings...This was a turn off and seemed a bit much. It was not clear if our server, Neal was also the Maitre'd but he was very helpful as was the server Neil (they joked about who spelled it right) the bread server was great as were his offerrings lavash and onion rolls the best. Multiple tastes compliments of the chef were a very nice touch. The starters and 1st courses Soup, tuna and pastas were all delightful, the Entres needed some refining, The halibut was great! the veal loin and cheek...cheeks were delish loin was undercooked, too much skin on bass

Luis is fabulous. His knowledge, description of the menu and presentation was superb. The food was a delightful, light airy sauces allowed the fish's full flavor to stand out. A truly unique dining experience. Surpassed every expectation. Boyfriend and I will be back again.

Wow! Wow! Wow!!!! BEST EVER!!!
I've been an Open Table user for years now and this is the first time that I feel compelled to write about a restaurant. WOW!!! What a place! The hotel that this restaurant is in is absolutely breathtaking and utterly elegant. The bar is fabulous and overlooks the ocean. The entire restaurant from the food, ambiance, service, luxury is TOP NOTCH and absolutely the VERY BEST I've ever experienced. No snobbery...just a passion for excellence...Do NOT miss this once in a lifetime experience.......you won't regret it. Very soon this will be known as one of the top restaurants in the world, and then unfortunately, we probably won't be able to get a reservation again....So glad I had this chance!

Beautiful lobby and restaurant.
Beautiful lobby and restaurant. Outstanding service! A unique atmosphere and best meal in San Juan.

Great restaurant in the new Vanderbilt Hotel. We are vegetarian and had a great meal - the risotto with black truffle was amazing.
4/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
From the moment you walk in, you know you are about to experience something extraordinary. And then it only gets better. Standard of service is off the charts, attentive without being intrusive, and above all highly professional. The menu is creative, gastronomic excellence. We had the prix fixe, at $70 it is reasonably priced way to sample. I recommend the salmon. Excellent wine list with generous pours on the single glass selections. The champagne cart is a superb idea. We tried the brut rose and really enjoyed it. Don't miss it! We are going back again - twice in one week!

This is the best restaurant
This is the best restaurant in Puerto Rico by far. The elegant renovation recently done to the Vanderbilt is the perfect environment for an outstanding dinner evening. Chef Juan Jose Cuevas was a pleasant surprise with his superb menu. The pumpkin soup offered at the beginning was delicious. The roasted organic mushrooms as an appetizer were outstanding. As main dishes we had the merluza with mussels and tomatoes and the duck confit. Both were out of this world. And the best part is the dessert. Get the vanilla panna cotta with mango and caramel or the rum soaked lady fingers mascarpone. All the best to Chef Cuevas. He is exceptional. Nothing to envy from a top New York restaurant. At the same standard as Eleven Madison or Bouley.

Excellent chef's tasting menu.
Excellent chef's tasting menu. Beautiful setting with exceptional view of the ocean. The service, food and overall experience was excellent. Michellin star quality in food and service.

Exceptional From Beginning To End!!
From the minute you enter the elegant Vanderbilt lobby with the piano playing quietly in the corner, the stage is set for an extraordinary evening. The Maitre'D seats us immediately and our evening begins. From the minute we sat down the experienced and very knowledgeable waiter, appropriately attired in a suit, guides us through the menu and evening. It was perfect! It was delicious! It was memorable! We went back 2 nights later and enjoyed the same experience. 1919 is a must go!!!

From the entrance you are
From the entrance you are greeted, name noted and not forgotten for the entire meal; Every employee is attentive, serviceable and well-mannered. The wine list is extensive, and some hard-to-find gems are priced perfectly. Best caviar in town-and the presentation is top notch. The duck was perfectly cooked.

1919 at Condado Vanderbilt Hotel PR
From arrival to departure the staff was attentive without feeling intrusive. The atmosphere was quiet, background music perfect, ambience romantic and elegant.
We tasted wines at varying price ranges ($85-$300) and all were EXCELLENT. Our choice of food was "let the chef surprise us" and he did so flawlessly, seamlessly, leaving one wondering how one plate would interact with the other. One is asked about ones tastes and allergies and then the chef runs with it. He skillfully integrated dish after dish - canapés, fish, mollusks, vegetables, meat that practically melted in your mouth, sorbets, mini chocolates with very distinct flavors, creamy custard like desserts and coffee that truly smelled like the "elixir of the Gods".
6/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
Very nice, but...
A great experience overall. The service was especially outstanding and nice extras were thrown in at no charge. The food was delicious overall but the one thing that dissapointed me was the consistent over-use of salt . Fine, creative (and expensive) dishes should be tasty and delicious on their own without giving you the feeling that the chef needed to pile on the salt to compensate for a lack of genuine tastiness.

My wife and I went to 1919
My wife and I went to 1919 after reading some reviews of the restaurant. We had a nice experience. The food was fresh and very good. Specially, we ejoyed the risotto and the halibut. Service was also great. We even had a tour around some of the hotel facilities. Thanks for that , Eduardo. We will join them again.
6/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great service and food, expensive!
We ate at three wonderful restaurants on our most recent visit to San Juan. I would rate 1919 best in service, which was exceptional. The food was very well done, though I preferred the more inventive cuisine of Marmalade. However, the chili-spiced dark chocolate ice cream at 1919 was incredible and a perfect way to end a wonderful meal.
7/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
inventive, thoughtfully curated
inventive, thoughtfully curated cuisine in an elegant setting (perhaps more formal than one might expect in a beach location). Would be able to hold its own against any in NYC
7/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
1919 was great!
My wife and I really enjoyed our visit to this wonderful restaurant. I understand that it opened earlier this year in a renovated beautiful old hotel (built in 1919). The service was fantastic and the food was excellent. 1919 also has a nice view of the ocean. You will enjoy a scenic view with your dinner.
We are looking forward to our next visit to Puerto Rico and to our next dinner at 1919.
7/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
If you eat somewhere 6 times ...
...in 4 months, and if it remains EXACTLY the same great quality and service, I think they can charge me just about anything they want to! And this restaurant (justifiably) does...
Expect perfect food.
Allow for little surprises along the way.
Their service is never hovering ~ always charming ~ the waiters slip in and out during the meal like small fish swimming around your legs in the water...nearly unknown.
The 3rd of my 3 fav places in San Juan (now that I am there often in our new home)
7/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best service on the island
I really enjoy 1919 and have been back 3 times. The service is impeccable. The atmosphere and decor are fantastic. The food is very good -- many dishes are amazing but once in a while there is one that is not that good, for example a tomatoes and spinach in broth first course. But that shouldn't keep you away from this gem. Most people will probably choose the 3 courses for $70 option, vs. a la carte or the larger chef's tasting. Extensive wine list on an iPad for easy searching.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was incredible. I definitely recommend getting the four course option, it is the best deal for your money (and taste buds). The setting is very romantic, it is perfect for special occasions, especially an anniversary. However, do not go if you are not looking to spend at least $150+ for 2 people.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Went to celebrate my son's 35th birthday in a party of four. There was not a single negative issue. Everything played perfectly in our favor. We decided to put ourselves in the hands of the chef and went through a 6 course meal that tested our palates with every sensation possible. He even paired the plates with the wine I brought, a 1978 California cabernet and demonstrated his domain in food and wine pairing. Expensive? Yes, but worth every dollar. Chef Juan Jose Cuevas came to the table after the dinner and greeted us personally. This is an experience that every one should have. Thanks to Juan Jose, Eduardo and all the staff for a perfect dinner experience.

Excellent and Super Service
We visit the restaurant for our wedding anniversary and it was the best choice. Outstanding Food, service excellent! Our recommendation is the chef choice menu it was out of this world, different choices of seafood, lamb and desserts (six courses). We love the Cod, the gemelli pasta, veal cheeks and every plate was perfect. We highly recommended for special occasions. We are locally and we love to eat, this is one of the best restaurants in the island (fine dinning). The service was professional and beautiful decor.
7/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Remarkable dining experience
It was a privilege to dine at 1919. We selected the four-course menu and wine pairing service for a truly outstanding dining experience. Each plate was unique, fresh, delicate, textured, perfect. The wines, thoughtfully selected by the restaurant's somelier, were perfect matches, and an around-the-world experience to be repeated!
The service was memorably good, with lots of attention to detail, making the whole experience extra special.

I went to celebrate my 4th wedding aniversary and it was everything and more than I expected. Truly one of the best places I ever went to dinner

1919 is a must
My husband and I both did the tasting menu. He had the hamachi fluke crudo (that he refused to share), the herb pasta with shrimp and the waygu beef, with the cheese plate to finish. I had the calabaza salad (so fresh), the risotto and the cod (which had such a buttery delicious flavor I almost got a piece of bread to clean the bowl with) and finished with the lemon bar. Superb. Jorge, the semmolier, was on his game! I had the wine pairing with my meal, and my pairing selections were so good, my husband wound up ordering glasses of what I had. All in all, this was an absolutely amazing dining experience and worth every penny. We will come back the next time we visit PR!

Perfect anniversary dinner
1919 is an amazing restaurant from the moment you set foot in the Vanderbilt Hotel in Condado, Puerto Rico. The restaurant has a beautiful view of the ocean and the decor is fabulous. The food was outrageous and the service was awesome. It's expensive, but well worth it for a special occasion. Chef Cuevas is one of the best chefs around. We will definitely return. I hope they open the rest of the hotel soon, I would love to vacation there. This is not a restaurant for young children.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Service is amazing.... Personal
Service is amazing.... Personal and making you feel you are important. Ready to please you... In an elegant and etiquette manner.

Spectacular Gastronomic Experience
This can't be expressed in words - we were a party if 5 with a baby carriage. Decoration and ambiance, low noise level and an amicable attitude from the staff made us feel relax in that paradise. We all decided for a 4 course dinner - the best decision - it's just high cuisine - the best in many years, and I've enjoyed excellent restaurants throughout the world. Food quality and preparation is amazing. Chef Juan Cuevas, young yet well educated and highly experienced, came to our table at the end. Excellent wine list for pairing the food. While in San Juan, don't miss 1919 - not cheap, but worth every $ spent.

Fine dining and excellent service!
My husband and I went to this restaurant for our 5 year anniversary. It was perfect for the occasion! The place is beautiful, quiet and the food is really good! The best thing from the experience was the service! They received us at the entrance of the hotel and escorted us to the restaurant. The server explained the menu with detail and answered each question to perfection. The restaurant is pricey for this reason we recommend it for special occasions. The selection of champagnes and wines is really good. I would definitely recommend this place for couples, business and adult/family dinners.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was amazingly good, and the service excellent! We will definitely return and have already recommended the place to a few friends.

Reaching for perfection
What a great place! Highly recommended , get the chef special = great adventure

Had a great evening here.
Had a great evening here. The service was amazing, the view great during daylight hours, and when the sun went down the water features kept it interesting inside. Decor and style and general ambiance was very nice, especially for a romantic meal, and there was also a pianist playing in the lobby bar which is worth a stop by on the way out.
Every one of my dishes was amazing, however my boyfriend's were not quite as impressive. Would definitely recommend the wagyu beef and the spring salad to start (for those that aren't seafood aficionados in particular).
Was ultimately rather expensive and decadent, but it was a very enjoyable evening!
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had the most amazing view of the water at sunset.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Beautiful place, so so food
What a gorgeous place! It certainly set our expectations for a wonderful dinner. The service was amazing and attentive. I especially appreciated the Sommelier who made up a fantastic wine pairing for my meal. The food however was a bit disappointing. Nothing wow'd us (other than the wine) and from the decor and service, we expected to be wow'd.
We spent 3 nights in San Juan and had 2 other memorable meals. The San Juan food scene is obviously on the rise.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
As always, an excellent experience
This time we went for lunch, and had the excellent experience we always have when we had dinner.

Excellent New Fine Dining
This is the epitome of fine dining in Puerto Rico. From the moment you arrive at the valet parking to the moment you leave. Everything is perfect, the service, the ambiance, the food and did I mention the service?
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Perfection in San Juan .
The most memorable meal in San Juan.
I would not think of the USA as a 'foodie' destination but 1919 has proved me wrong.
I would rate it with many of the best in the world - the Savoy London and The Burj, Dubai .
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing Dining Experience
Upon arrival we were immediately greeted by the manager and escorted to our table by a hostess that already knew us by name. We choose the Chef's Table which was 9 courses and easily one of the most amazing dining experiences I have ever had. Everything is freshly prepared from scratch and sourced locally. Be sure to try the impossibly thin flat bread.
The price of wine by the glass was a steep but it came with a very generous pour. You get a glass and then about another glass worth in a small decanter.
I had high expectations and they exceeded them in every area. If you are looking for a place to celebrate a special evening you can't go wrong with 1919.
10/18/2013 5:00:00 PM
Best of the best!
It is really an unique dinning option for those who really appreciate a premium fine dinning experience. The place is exceptionally decorated. The 8 dish course was exquisite and delicious. The staff really runs the extra mile for you to have a wonderful night and encourage you to come back.

I am extremely happy of making the decision of going to this restaurant for a very special occasion. Once we arrived to the hotel entrance there was one nice lady waiting to escort us to the restaurant. The personnel at the restaurant was very friendly and the attention to details was way above of anything else I have seen in other restaurants. The decoration and luxury of the restaurant was spectacular. I went during the night so I was not able to see the oceanic view. The food was extremely good (except for the Piña Colada which was not the best) and very different from the typical restaurant menu. I highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions with your loved one. For sure I will repeat the experience soon. Kudos!!!!
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
We celebrated my husband's birthday and had the 4-course meal. Lots of choices for each course and each was amazing. Tuna tartar and fresh octopus were great starters. The risotto was okay, but the pasta was fabulous. We both had the steak, cooked to perfection. Desserts were amazing. I substituted my dessert for a cheese plate, which was good. My husband had the citrus. It was a selection of citrus based desserts. The mojito crème brule was so yummy. Finally, they brought a small selection of dessert bites on a plate that read "Happy Birthday". Nice! In addition to the food, the drinks and wine list were quite yummy too. We would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and are looking forward to eating there with friends.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
beautiful space....the lighting
beautiful space....the lighting alone is worth a visit...holds up well to good restaurants in NY and Europe..
the four course tasting menu (one selection from each category on the menu) for $70 per person was great.........
we selected the $60 person paired wines (five glasses each) ..but...I think next trip we mayl go with individual bottles.. from the tablet based wine list...
1919 is in the old Vanderbilt hotel which plans to reopen in Nov 14 and a visit to the bar just to see the space is well worth the extra f few $ for a premium cocktail....
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Very happy with this find!
Saw this written up in Cooking Light last month and was happy to find such light, flavorful options for a special occassion restaurant. Restaurant was very accommodating. Everything is local and sustainable.
11/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
I took my mother to San Juan to celebrate her birthday 1919 was the last place we were going to before heading to the airport to come home. We were there for lunch and by far it was the most complete and top culinary experience we had during our stay. The food, wine and service were perfection. The Vanderbilt Hotel is stunning and it adds to the experience. I look forward to a future visit, with perhaps a stay at the hotel.

Beautiful venue and food
Wonderful view accompanied with outstanding service, decor and food presentation. Excellent wine pairings with delicately prepared plates that are almost too beautiful to eat. Great attention to detail of every plate. Absolutely wonderful.
