Great Food Great Service
This is a fun place to go with friends. Great food from southeastern Europe. They serve small plates perfect for sharing. Our server knew the menu completely and was able to describe each dish. Also there are wines from Bulgaria, Croatia, Moldova as well as France and California.

Great food with unique twists
Very good variety and nice portions on their small plates. I would get the vegetable lasagna over and over again.

We brought our friends visiting from NYC here, and it didn't disappoint. Excellent food, the zucchini soup was amazing, as was the asparagus. The margaritas were perfect. We really loved the entire menu and the service. Will absolutely come here again.

Great Date Night
The servers at Ambar, starting with the hostess, are great. They are not intrusive, but very willing to talk about the food and wine when asked. This was the first restaurant dinner in a long time where we were NOT interrupted in the middle of a conversation and did NOT have to shout to talk. The food was rich and wonderful. We loved the zucchini soup with sun dried tomato shreds. The mushroom crepes reminded me of trips to Russia - very rich and flavorful. We loved the duck and the beef/pork kabobs. The desserts were light with lots of interesting flavors. We live in the neighborhood and will definitely be back. I just hope that the loud bar crowd stays away and leaves this place to couples.

Best of DC
Best restaurant in DC by far. Incredible food and cocktails and a friendly and casual atmosphere.

Best Brunch Spot!
10 of us dined at Ambar for brunch and had an amazing time! The food was abundant, varied and delicious! We let the waiter pick small plates for us and everything was tasty! We gave this place an A+!

First time at this great new
First time at this great new restaurant on Capitol Hill. We were not familiar with Balkan food but really enjoyed every dish we had. A good value too as lunch for two with a glass of wine came only to about $50 before tax and tip. We will be back!

Excellent and different
Great food and great service. A different wine list and a lot of fun. Also a lot of money. I will definitely return but for a special occasion for which I'm ready to pay extra.

A great experience!
Loved love loved this place. Please note, if you want a lot of food on your plate this is not the place. A little pricey for the portion, but oh man was the portion good! It is served tapas style. We had the bread and chutney like spreads for an appetizer had an entre and dessert. We did not leave hungry. Their version of apple pie was TO DIE FOR!!! We arrived about a half hour earlier than our reservation time and they seated us anyway. My only complaint was we were seated upstairs right below a speaker so it was a little louder than I like, but food was so good I didn't care....

Great even for vegetarians!
I was really pleased to experience the variety of flavors without having the vegetarian dishes be flavored solely by cheese. Several different options, and I didn't get to try them all.

Great new food
Went early (5:15) because with toddler and it was perfect. Would love to go later with different restaurant crowd and spend a couple of hours. Food is a little different and wonderful. Service was terrific. Fun place.

Balkan small plates
Good choice for our group of six, arriving separately, very accommodating to us. FYI, this was for a pre-ballgame get-together, and this is a good choice for pre or post ball game. Balkan food is good - start with 2 small plates per person, you may have enough food already!

Great time and great food.
We loved dining at Ambar. The food was excellent -- delicious with unusual dishes and combinations of herbs and spices. The waitress and waiters were prompt, friendly, and efficient. The restaurant inside was quiet enough for easy conversation, which we greatly appreciated.

The (re) introduction of Balkan food to D.C. is a very welcome treat; the owner is gracious and friendly, as are all of the wait staff; our meal was fantastic, as was the wine. A wonderful experience!

A good find in the Eastern Market
This place was recommended by a friend who lives near the Eastern Market district. It was not in the extensive list of restaurants that was displayed in the Google links, but we found it an excellent choice. Superb Balkan fare and very good wine list. The "deconstructed cake" (forest gnocchi)was an amazing dessert! Excellent service - ask for Dimitri.

Very interesting trying Croatian wines--quite nice!

Ambar really impressed us.
Ambar really impressed us. Great food, attentive but not overbearing service and a clean but distinctive look. Definitely recommended!
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
My husband and I went to Ambar with another couple and thoroughly enjoyed sharing eight or nine tapas plates and a couple desserts. Every single dish was truly outstanding! The service was also excellent. Plus it was a beautiful evening to enjoy our meal outside.

Great Lunch Spot
I just finished my second lunch outing at Ambar. This time I took 2 friends who had yet to dine there. Each time I've gone everyone in the party (all are foodies) have thoroughly enjoyed the food. Each time we have ordered off of the 3 course lunch special menu. The specials are a great way to try the most food and are a great deal.

After 3 or 4 visits, it's still very good eats to go!

First visit, enjoyed ourselves and would definitely return.

Ambar was a terrific surprise. The Balkan menu was different and the food was amazing.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Came here hoping for lunch but they only offer a brunch menu on weekends. Prix-fixe looked like on OK deal but we ordered a la carte. It is small plates but good quality food and filling enough. Loved the Russian style egg salad, burger, and dips. Ask for bread - I think it's extra but they are fried balls of deliciousness!

I am a monthly guest. Each visit, the food is excellent and the wait staff are very friendly and efficient. I bring new friends each time and they never fail to impress. As diners, you are never made to feel rushed but always pampered. The food is traditional and beautifully prepared and presented. Always a treat!!

Good food, small plates
Ambar makes some tasty food. We tried several Balkan specialties, all of which were good, with unusual--but not bizarre--ingredient combinations, and all prettily presented. Bacon-wrapped, cheese-stuffed prunes confirm that anything's better with bacon. And cheese. The regional wine was good too. We were seated in the upstairs bar at a high table, which is not our favorite way to eat (hard to push the chairs in and out), though it does cut down on the spillage since your face is right in the plate. But i think it's time everybody got over "small plates," especially when some are a full serving and others aren't enough for even one person. Six thin asparagus spears? Really? But with all that, we'll probably still go back.

Balkan Food with a twist
Great place! Food is great. If you've spent some time in the Balkans, you'll recognize the dishes and appreciate Ambar's contemporary twist on traditional dishes. If you've never been to the region, you can easily explore different food with the tapas style menu. The Karadjordjeva (Balkan Schnitzel) is really great! The wine list features a lot of the best stuff from Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Serbia, but a number of Moldovan wines are also on offer. Our server was attentive and knew the dishes. It was a really great experience.

A Memorable Way to Meet the Balkans
When we read about the brunch at Ambar, we thought that since this was a new cuisine for us, we had to give it a try. We plan to go back. Delicious delights, great service and a chance to add foods that we never tried before to our list of treats we enjoyed and want to enjoy again. It was also the first time we ate in that neighborhood. We plan to try some more stops around there.

A must do!
I have frequented Ambar a handful of times and each and every visit leaves me scheduling the next. The food quality is consistent and the staff most pleasant. I brought friends this round that had never experienced Balkan cuisine and they were very pleased. The bottomless brunch is must do!!!!!

it is really unfortunate the
it is really unfortunate the food was so dissapointing becasue the service and vibe was awesome! a group of us came on Sunday afternoon for brunch and were lucky to have an attentive awesome server who kept the mimosas coming and was really friendly. the only true issue we had was the food-incredibly salty chicken soup, less than appealing salads and just average sliders. that ebing said the ham and cheese crepe was good, as was the cheese pies and finished off with the waffle with nutella and strawberries. i'll give ambar another shot maybe for dinner or happy hour- but brunch is a no go.

Like Hearst Castle
A bit eclectic, but it all works together well. Have been here for brunch and for dinner. Both times the food was terrific, the service was solid and the ambiance was lovely. I will recommend Ambar to my friends for sure.

A great place in Barrack's Row
The food was very good for the "level" of restaurant. Obviously, a more expensive place will tend to a more sophisticated and innovative menu and presentation, but for a "regular" place, Ambar was excellent.
The service was attentive and the space comfortable if just a bit noisy. For two we had roasted squash salad, mushroom crepes, leek croquettes, and mixed grill plus a Bulgarian cab/shirah, all both interesting but with a comfort food familiarity. Even the fries that came with the mixed grill were notable.
On Mondays bottles of wine are half price, so for a filling meal and wine the total came to about $75. A reasonable price for a great meal making it one of the best places in Barrack's Row and a fine choice for a regular dinner out.
10/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
We enjoyed a stellar experience at Ambar. Dmitri, our server was helpful in navigating the menu and offered terrific suggestions. We loved everything we tried - from the leek croquettes to the meat mezze. We were seated at 6:30 but enjoyed the evening so much we found ourselves still trying items from the wonderful menu at 9pm. Arrive early and try some of the special drinks -- and don't skip dessert. Can wait to return.

A nice little gem on Restaurant
A nice little gem on Restaurant Row 8th St. SE. Food was tasty, but two dabs of quiche were a meager portion size. Nevertheless,
I would go there again.

Ambar was the perfect choice
Ambar was the perfect choice for our first experience with Balkan food. The grilled sampler platter for 2 offered us 5 different meats to try. They were all delicious, but the pork tenderloin and the chicken were melt-in- your-mouth wonderful. We also tried the grilled chicken flatbread and a phyllo-crusted cheese-stuffed dish. It was about the size of a muffin and was sitting on a diced cucumber and yogurt 'sauce'. It was absolutely divine! The crunch of the cucumbers was the perfect compliment to the flakiness of the phyllo crust and the melted cheese.
We are looking forward to our next vist to Ambar!

Fantastic Food & Service
What a great addition to the neighborhood! Ambar is a delight for its food and friendly, informed service. The small plates are perfect for experiencing the tasty and innovative menu. Do not miss the cheese pie, roasted squash salad or mussels. You will not be disappointed. The noise level is high but the tables upstairs at the front make it at least possible to hold a conversation.

Loved the variety in the brunch
Loved the variety in the brunch menu - opted for the $35 prix fixe option, which was the best value for 2 hungry diners!

A real treasure
Recently we were in DC for a meeting and since I am Serbian, we were thrilled to find Ambar. The food , atmosphere, service, prices and personal attention from the owner were fabulous. Our waiters Demetri and Boris were so attentive, helpful in explaining the food selections and could not do enough to make our evening an enjoyable experience. The salmon, almond crusted chicken, kabob dinners were delicious as well as the cheese pie and squash salad. Our favorite dessert was the Forest gnocchi. The sorbet is second to none. I would highly recommend Ambar to anyone wanting an unusual and delicious dining experience. Treat yourself to this excellent restaurant soon!! We can't wait to go back to Ambar. It's close to the metro station.

I lived in the Balkans for
I lived in the Balkans for several years - and although Ambar's cuisine evokes all the flavors of that region it makes them even better. By wisely going with a tapas style, Ambar avoids the heaviness notable in most Balkan cuisine. A really great take and the ambience is amazing. Loved it!

First time dining here and
First time dining here and loved it. Plenty of interesting and delicious tapas choices. Loved the leek croquettes, roasted mushroom crepe and the bacon & peanut pork tenderloin. The Forest Gnocchi from the dessert menu was devine! Nice wine selections; we went with a Bulgarian red and were not disappointed. It paired well with the wide variety of tapas that we ordered. The downstairs dining area looked like it could get a bit noisy with the adjacent bar area, but we were seated upstairs and it was perfect for dinner conversation. We look forward to our next visit.

Our favorite new restaurant
Our favorite new restaurant on Capitol Hill. Took friends for dinner and they were very impressed.

Honestly Ambar was a pleasant surprise that will certainly be revisited. The ambiance was quite nice and the food was incredible! My girlfriend loves me more since our visit to your establishment! Thanks Ambar!

Great food! Great drinks!
Ambar was a very pleasant surprise. The service was outstanding and the food was just what we were looking for; authentic Serbian with clean, fresh ingredients. An added plus: the bar was stocked with hard to find Eastern European liquors. We had a great experience and can't wait to go back.

A taste of the Balkans in DC!
Second time here, first for a wonderful dinner so returned for brunch, equally as pleasant.Great little place serving familiar food w/ Balkan flair.Options abound for brunch, but we chose a la carte.Mezze platter for two sufficient for 4 to share.Eggs Benedict & salmon omelet light & tasty-flavors meshed quite well. Chicken Roulade superb.Egg BLT&Fried Chicken sandwich predictable but well executed.Lightness of the fare leaves room for the yummy desserts-poached pear waffle, strawberry waffle & cinnamon sweet sourdough (opt for the jam accompaniment; nutella too overpowering).Timing of bringing out dishes a little awkward. One of the better Bloody Marys in town!Service was friendly.All-you-can-eat option good deal if having a leisurely brunch!
11/30/2013 4:00:00 PM
OK, but not great
This is my second time at Ambar, and I returned because the first was pleasant. The good: the menu is innovative, and the tapas style offers a chance to experiment. The bad: there are few vegetarian options, and the cost of wine is astronomical. At 10-12/glass for mediocre wines, the bill rises quickly. These are nice Baltic wines, but absolutely nothing special.
12/2/2013 4:00:00 PM
Good friends came to town on business; got together to catch up, unwind and dine. I chose this restaurant as it seemed to accommodate the eclectic appetites of our group. A fish-vegetarian, a sense of adventure about food, a strictly meat and potatoes and a I will try at least once. It is a tapas restaurant so we each ordered 2-3 dishes and decided to share. The calamari was awesomely delicious & the salmon an excellent runner up! Our meat and potatoes guy had to acknowledge the mushroom crepes were really good and folks that says a lot. The duck was succulent & the chicken breast with wasabi a hit. I was the only one who liked the bacon wrapped prunes. We had great conversation, outstanding service and much fun. It was a perfect evening!

Amazing Endless Brunch!
$35 for endless plates and bottomless drinks! Definitely try the pear waffle!

Bottomless Balkan Brunch Brilliance
Finding delicious (nor authentic) Eastern European food in the US is a rarity, so when I stumbled across this place at first I was skeptical. But after dining their twice, I can definitely say that I've found a new favorite spot to brunch! I highly recommend asking the server to "surprise" you with their recommended dishes, because they're all from the former Yugoslav region (Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, FYRM, etc.) and know the dishes the best.
High quality food and service = perfect match for a weekend brunch!
