Great 1st Time visit...I'll be back
Had Mary as our server and she was amazing! She was very knowledgeable about the food selections, how foods were prepared, was careful with my dietary allergies and had amazing wine knowledge! She and her team were very attentive without being intrusive and the timeliness of the courses was perfect!
Highly recommend this great seafood restaurant and it's highly creative menu selections and friendly staff!

A Night of Surprises
This was our first visit but definitely not the last! We were happy to discover that the meal here was much less than our meal at their other outstanding restaurant - Alexander's Steak House. We had mero fish with Meyer lemon sauce and figs and Arctic Char. The mero fish was similar to the butterfish at Roy's but this one is the best! From the bread table service to all of the attention to details including the cotton candy finish, this restaurant made our celebration most memorable!

Love The Sea
Came here for a lunch with friends. Love the squid risotto (wild Boston) and New York steak (Nebraska), squid was tender and juicy, friend's steak was flavorful. Fried clam chowder was out of this world. Hamachi shot and truffle French fries were what we did not want to miss. Service was friendly and attentive. A gem in Palo Alto.

We arrived and was seated
We arrived and was seated with a great view to the kitchen. We started with the fried clam chowder and lobster risotto, which were both delicious. The croissants in the bread basket was delicious. The seared mero was divine, what a great tasting and moist fish, cooked perfectly. We also had the truffle fries with truffle aioli, one of the best I've tasted. We finished off with two raspberry souffles, absolutely the best, so light and heavenly, with a delicious grand marnier crème anglaise. Then came the grape/orange cotton candy, delicious and what a nice treat to end the evening. We are definitely going back!

One of the best meals in awhile
Celebrating our anniversary, we wanted something special. The Sea by Alexander's did the job perfectly. While it is a bit 'pricey', the food is worth it. Our server and all the attending help were superb. Wonderful way to celebrate.

My husband and I took a dear friend for her birthday and everything was perfect. We dined in the smaller area off of the bar which was very intimate and quiet. The food was spectacular and the service superb. My husband and I have dined at The Sea several times and it is definitely one of our favorites.

For your anniversary
Fantastic appetizers, clam chowder, and seafood. Took our own wine and the Sommelier was very knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend the Sea to our friends.

More Seafood Than Steak
For a steakhouse, the menu was very beef limited. I ordered a green salad, a NY cut steak and a chocolate mousse dessert. All were exquisitely plated. The salad was lightly dressed with thinly sliced Japanese veges. It was delightful. The steak was done perfectly and shared the plate with polenta and tomato combination. The dessert was a big disappointment with a weighty chocolate base, a cubic 2 inches of mousse and a half spoonful of ice cream. You needed a knife to eat the base. Not what I expected. The pricing, even for the area was steep.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
The menu was great, not just for fish lovers. Supplied many non "sea" items and the steak was up to Alexanders quality. We enjoyed every stage of the meal, drinks, appetizers, main course and desert.

Good detail, disappointing entree
We went for our wedding anniversary. I had high hopes; for instance, the salads were really prepared well, just enough of the dressing to give a taste. I ordered the tuna, my wife the salmon. Both were very tastefully presented. But the tuna was served with potatoes, which had the effect of making the whole dish much too bland. There wasn't anything that really brought out the flavor of the tuna, which by itself was cooked just right. My wife loved the salmon, however.
Desserts were very good. The pastry chef knows his stuff.
For the price range (>$100/person) I expected more.

Over The Top
The service...spot on!
The food quality - over the top A++
Thank you to Thomas our waiter for making it a special experience and the culinary team, Chef Lin et al for one of my very best dining experiences ever.
Worth a special trip, highly recommended!!
8/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
I was expecting everything to be on par w/ the steakhouse. Not so. Our waiter talked super fast- couldn't understand half the specials of the day. She announced to the entire group that we needed to leave by a certain time- even though that was supposed to be only a note for her to note through the Opentable comments. Refilled our water once in the 2.5 hours we were there. Came around with bread once- we were looking around for a refill.
Food was tasty, but the overall service was certainly lackluster.

My New Favorite in Palo Alto
The striking decor sets the stage for spectacular food and top-notch service. We started with two of their in-house cocktail inventions. They were good enough to ask for the recipes, which they gave us. Highly recommended, especially for special occasions.

Great food, will go back
The grilled lobster was cooked to perfection. I will go back just for the lobster. Service as OK, food was excellent. I just wish they would give at least 1 side dish with their entrees.
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Ask about seafood
Excellent food, service, atmosphere. Disappointing dresert.
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food/great time
Celebrated birthday at the restaurant. Was extremely impressed by all facets of the operation: service/ambiance/food. Was treated like a special guest from start to finish and will definitely be back!

A relaxing lunch
Recently opened for lunches from W-F. Spacious and airy inside with a nice view of the kitchen in action. Friendly service and we received a 'Happy Birthday' dessert which was a note I put in when booking via Opentable. I had lobster scrambled eggs which I personally would prefer less cheese in the eggs. Fried clam chowder was delish! May return to try more dishes.

Great food, great atmosphere
I took my wife here for a romantic dinner and it did not disappoint. The wait staff is extremely professional, very fast, and the food was great. The dessert was so delicious that we were talking about it all the way home.

Good Food - Marginal Service
Food was very good.
Service was uncoordinated - waiter, wine service, bread service, ....
It was rare to ask for something and get it quickly.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
My friends and I thoroughly
My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at The Sea! The food was excellent and the service was impeccable! Can't wait to go back!

The service gets the 5 stars
Birthday Dinner. The welcome was warm and genuine. They knew it was my Birthday and gavve us special amuse-bouche, plus sparkling wine o celebrate. Mia, our server was amazing.
When they discovered I was lactose intolerant we went through the menu to choose what would be best, and what an amazing menu. I decided upon the Chef's tasting menu, meaning that 2 of the 7 courses would need to be slightly modified to remove beurre blanc & sauteed vegetable ...the Chef however would have none of it, and would not change his menu in any way.
Finally I settled on the King Wild Salmon ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, and we could finally eat. My husband took the steak sampler, 3 amazing cuts of beef with the piece de resistance being the A5 Wagyu.
9/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
It was my first time at this restaurant, which was for the purpose of romance. Arriving in the evening, after dark, I found the space to be immediately inviting and the staff most professional. I have dined in many places around the world, And I can assure you that this is a restaurant determined to maintain high standards, While still offering a comfortable dining experience for family, friends, business, and even romance. The menu had excellent selections, the quality was high, and the pastry chef offered complimentary cotton candy, etc., post dinner, plus handmade bite-size candies. A nice touch. Look forward to returning and assessing the consistency of food quality and service over time.

Alexander's Sea Escape
The Sea by Alexander's steakhouse was everything that I expected. The restaurant is very large with lots of seating. The food is delicious with a great wine menu. Me and my family had a great time and will definitely go back.
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great impromptu dinner
I was staying at Dinah's Garden Hotel next to the restaurant on business and went to The Sea for a quick dinner without really knowing much about it. The meal was fantastic, service great, and ambience was just right.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
the best food experience for awhile
The best food experience I had in the last 5 years! Probably one of the top restaurants in the bay area! I would recommend it to any special event or just to put yourself with a smile...
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Exceptional service and staff...
Yes, very pricey. Very. But absolutely appropriate for a special occasion (my wife's birthday in our case). Our waiter, Thomas, did an outstanding job, not overbearing, but always there if needed. He did a particularly fine job of explaining each dish and its preparation. And in the just the right way... not over-wrought with hype. The young woman Sommelier (sorry, have forgotten her name) was knowledgable and interesting to chat with too. Bravo "Sea" team! And thanks.

Fabulous upscale seafood restaurant
Our second visit did not disappoint...nice relaxed feel, excellent service and totally fit for foodies. The Hamachi shots are deelish as is the ahi, lobster risotto and oysters for starters. We also had the seared tuna, grilled king salmon and seared mero as our entrees - outstanding!! And definitely order the truffle fries to share.
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great dinner but pricey.
The food and service were great. Portions were on the smaller size but that was great for me. It was pricey but that was I expected given the Alexander's Steakhouse ownership and level of service.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went here for a birthday and the service was great. Very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly waiter. The extra birthday treats during the dinner were very generous and a nice surprise. Overall, the food was delicious, very rich, and was to our liking. Great ingredients and great use of seasonal ingredients. The entire experience was a nice treat.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is a first time to visit there. Food is very nice, and I would like to visit again!!
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good for business or pleasure. My wife's new Bay Area FAVORITE!
10/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our first time at "Sea", but being a somewhat regular customer of Alexander's Steakhouse we had high hopes. We were not disappointed...the service, provided by Thomas, was outstanding - possibly the best service experience I've had all year and the food was delicious!!
Highly, highly recommend and we'll be back!!!
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Sea provided my wife + I a stellar dining experience for our Anniversary dinner. I purposely did not bring any mention about the special occasion yet we were tended to by the most genuinely kind staff + recommendations toward the best pairings for our meal. We both look forward to come back—sooner than later.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Be prepared if you go that it is very expensive but worth it! Excellent food- everything we ordered was well beyond expectations!!
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
I have dined at The Sea six times since it opened. The first time was incredible and each subsequent visit has been hit or miss; disappointing for a restaurant of this caliber. This last visit was very good. The sommelier knew what she was talking about, the service was impeccable and the food was very good. Maybe this restaurant has finally settled in to its potential and comfort zone. I hope so.

Great Steak and Seafood
They look fancy with white tablecloths and I was wondering how my elementary school age sons would do. But their waiters were friendly and whatever we ordered were delicious. At the end, we didn't have room for dessert. But they brought complimentary cotton candy (!!), cookies and hard candies. That really entertained the kids AND adults.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went on a whim and were
We went on a whim and were delighted. Everything we ordered was delicious. The "Lobster Rocks" were the best surprise. They literally look like lava rocks on a plate, but they are succulent bites of lobster in a delicious sauce. The deconstructed clam chowder was also a huge hit. The place is pricey, but manageable if you order appetizers and share an entree.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was a random fine for me - I was shocked how good it was!! did the tasting menu, and was amazed at how great it was! If you're in the area, you MUST try The Sea!
10/20/2013 5:00:00 PM
Dinner at The Sea was among the best steakhouse meals I have eaten. We had tuna tartare and hamachi shots (try them!) for apps. For my entree I had the Wagyu sampler with cuts from Japan, Australia, and the US. It was a bit pricey but worth the splurge. Lastly the cotton candy dessert was delectable. The service was quite formal and excellent. If I lived nearby I'd be a regular.
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our second visit in two weeks.
Our second visit in two weeks. Service was slower and less attentive this time round. We had a different waiter from last week. Waiter shoudl have told us that the Halibut would be served slightly rare. My wife wound up not eating parts of her entree and at $57 for the entree she ate some very expensive beans and sauce.
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
We took our good friend here for his birthday celebration, and we were all very happy. We were greeted by very friendly hostesses and shown to a lovely table. Our server was attentive and accommodating, and everything came as requested. The food was outstanding! Every item met or exceeded our expectations, and everyone loved their meals. Yes, it's pricey, but would definitely go back for a special occasion!

Great Restaurant & Priced as Such
The Sea by Alexander's is a top notch restaurant. Both food and service are excellent. The fish on the menu is done well and the offerings are a great mix of old friends (e.g. salmon) and some exotics that you won't see very often (Hawaiian Mero). They retain a few steak offerings including the super high end Wagyu beef from the Alexander's steak house heritage.
Overall, this is a great place for a special occasion since to eat well and drink moderately you'll pay at least $175 per person. If you go for a special such as the trio of Wagyu beef and buy a bottle of wine plan for $250++ per person.
I would recommend bringing a nice bottle of wine and paying the $35 corkage since the wine list is heavily skewed toward the high end.
10/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
The service started off badly.
The service started off badly. Cocktails were late in coming and followed almost immediately by an attempt to service our appetizers. It took a long time before our waiter came back to take our wine order and the wine arrived after we had finished the appetizers. A change in waitperson made a big different in service. The food was excellent. We started with clam chowder and tuna tartare both were excellent. For entrees we had seared tuna which was really very good and the seppia (cuttlefish) risotto was good but not great. Wine prices seem very high. For dessert we had Coffee & Donuts which did not include coffee. At the end we were served cotton candy which seemed strangely out of place. This is not for the causal diner; its expensive.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
This is a real deal! Definitely a 5 stars restaurant - food, service, ambience, and nice wine list. This is a so much better run restaurant than Alexander's Steakhouse. By the way, their dessert is super!
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
The ambience is warm, modern and inviting. Professional staff is attentive to every detail and then...perfectly unnoticeable. Hamachi shots are always a must.. never disappoint! Quality dishes were enjoyed by all five of us, each having something different. No one goes home wanting more! All around great dining experience with a high price tag that is worth every penny!
11/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
It's all in the atmosphere
My husband and I went to the Sea to celebrate a birthday. It was quiet, visually elegant surroundings, and the waitstaff was amazing. They had all sorts of little flourishes that make the meal seem a very special occasion. We were well cared for, without being intruded upon.
The food was very well prepared and delicious. I'd read a poor review in the Chronicle and was had lowered my expectations, but there was no need. Lobster risotto was toothy without being heavy, tuna tatami bright and well balanced. The halibut preparation brought out the taste of the fish in the richest possible way.
I think what accounts for the poor review was that it is not groundbreaking, innovative cooking, it's just very good.

Excellent Sea food. Very enjoyable.
Excellent Sea food. Very enjoyable. definitely go again. Pricey but worth it for a special evening.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
It's what you would expect from the "Alexander company". The food was well made and well-presented. Went with some business friends and had a very well-paced meal. The bartender also gave us very good, personalized attention, which I appreciate.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
We enjoyed dinner here on
We enjoyed dinner here on a Sunday night and had the mero with bacon, kale, potatoes, and fig; the king salmon with mushrooms, bacon, haricot verts and champagne sauce; and loup de mer with bell pepper, tomato, pearl onion, and basil.
All were well prepared and I thought creative in the combination of accompaniments. Our favorite was the loup de mer.
Our server provided excellent service, was very knowledgeable about the ingredients, and made sure we always had everything we needed.
