Outstanding Japanese style
Outstanding Japanese style dining at Joshu-ya. The sashimi was incredible, fresh and perfect. Also had the scallops which were equally good, although a bit cooler than intended due to slow service. Not much of a setting and service was intermittent, but the food is worth the trip!

This was my second time and
This was my second time and I was just as impressed this time by the food and service. Great great great great spot! My new favorite Japanese, and in my top 10 Bay Area restaurants. You gotta try this place!

Quite good sushi
I made reservations for 5:45 PM on a Saturday, but the drive from Davis took me a little longer than expected. I called ahead to tell them that I would be late, to which they said that would not be a problem, and we arrived around 6:10. There seemed to be a few big party groups, and we weren't able to get seated until 10 or 15 minutes later, but besides that, our experience was quite nice. The servers were attentive, not overly intrusive, and I felt like we got our food at a reasonable time.
We went for the sushi omakase, and the fish overall, minus a few items, was quite good. I was disappointed by the scallops, uni, and ikura, but for the rest of the fish and its good quality, $40 for 10 nigiri and 4 sashimi is a pretty good deal.

The food was OMG great! I
The food was OMG great! I had the pork belly tacos and moaned after every bite. My friend had the octopus salad which she said was out of this world as well. Our waitress was knowledgeable and you could tell she enjoyed the food there as much as we did (always a good sign).

Fresh, creative, and delicious
The hamachi tartare with seared ankimo foie gras was inventive, creative and absolutely delicious. It was pricey at $20, but worth every bite. I will be back for that dish alone. Aslo had Joshuya roll and the Marilyn Monroe. Also very tasty. Service was fast and attentive. Disappointed that they were out of all ice creams (green tea and black bean), but they substituted moshi balls and made them complimentary. I really liked this place!

Good food, a bit pricey
Food was well-portioned, and the service was excellent. But then again it was 2:30 PM and there weren't that many people there at the time. Definitely more on the fancy side since it's in the $10-20 range.
5/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
We were greeted and seated right away. The food was great as always, the scallops with risotto were superb!! The sweet fries and the pommels frites were as good as we remembered them, they are a must!! The chirashi was fresh, and the seared trout was cooked to perfection: crispy skin, edium rare inside, I loved it!
Service could be more attentive: I had to get up to ask for a serving spoon, had to ask for water refills...
But we will come back!!

Fresh High Quailty Fish
Fish is flown in from Tokyo's Tsukiji Fish Market! The sashimi was top notch! Notably amongst the best I've had. The staff was attentive and friendly. This is an oasis in the South Campus area of Berkeley. A real neighborhood gem.

Although the cuisine states contemporary american, it was more of a japanese with some modern flare. The tapas were their specialty and very very good. Must try the tapas, I think those dishes are their specialty. I will go back to try more.

Good sushi option in Berkeley
Good size rolls, definitely fresh. Some interesting specialty sushi rolls. Prompt and attentive service. Will go back.

Great sushi in Brekeley
Joshu-ya is a great sushi restaurant. The offerings are consistently excellent, and the staff are welcoming and attentive.

A little gem
The food here is very good to excellent, the service is friendly and efficient, and the prices are very reasonable for what you get. We usually order one of the lunch combos, but the Kobe marrow burger was amazing, and they cooked it rare, the way we asked for it. That's a tough thing to get restaurants to do these days.

Great food, popular place
Great food but noisy table near us. HIstorical oldest building in Berkeley. Good variety and quick friendly service. Would certainly go back.

Excellent rapport, qualité, prix.
I really enjoyed this everything here. The food was excellent and the service was very good.

The food was lovely, however
The food was lovely, however the atmosphere was not the best. I was seated inside and on such a lovely summer night, it was terrible inside; it was too warm and the tables were way too close together for any comfort. Going on a date with a partner with very loud girls on both sides of us did not give the best atmosphere.

My favorite sushi in Berekely
Their fish is fresh, they have great traditional Japanese style sushi in addition to some more creative california style rolls if you like that sort of thing. Their appetizers and specials are absolutely delicious. I have gone here twice now and haven't yet had something I didn't think was fantastic. Highly recommended!

A Civilized Vibe off Telegraph
Joshu-ya is a pleasant Asian fusion restaurant with outdoor dining on a patio separated by a fence from busy Dwight Way. Traffic noise is omnipresent but we were happy to be cool outside; the inside was stuffy on a warm evening. There are 2 menus--one from the 1998 Sushi Boat is standard Japanese-American fare. The other is more creative. The house salad was an inexpensive ($4) and delicious starter, along with standard miso soup. Sushi was good; a risotto in the Tapas list was easily enough for a main course. A main course serving of cold soba noodles topped with pork belly was delicious but so enormous I should have shared it. Prices are reasonable. The wine list is small; beer might have been a better bet.

It's a really interesting
It's a really interesting restaurant...a haut cuisine with a student hangout...there are some interesting dishes that came to completion well and some that missed their mark. Having said that, there are plenty of intriguing choices that we will return to try.

Nice Asian Fusion combination
Japanese/Asian Fusion. Tapas were very good if one does not want the traditional Japanese meal. Not too much free parking in the back, but ample street/meter parking.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fresh and affordable. A weekly spot
All of the fish was fresh and presentation was nice. They had a nice selection and prices were very reasonable. If I was a local I would more then likely choose this place as my local go to sushi spot. The wine and sake list was small but again very fairly priced and a little of everything. Service was very good though the table was cramped at times. Next time I am back I will order my food a little more spread out. As like every sushi or tapas restaurant they tend to send it out asap when you order it. All in all I will be back on my next trip to Berkeley.
9/22/2013 5:00:00 PM
We loved the sushi and the Hamachi Tartare. We expected it to be packed but 3:30 was a great time to show up. The sushi makers were very fun and happy. The waitresses were very attentive. Above all, the food was GREAT!

Casual outdoor dining
This was my second visit... went back for the foie fras and Hamachi with jalepeno appetizers. Unique and very tasty.
Out of a lot of beer selections, but the hot sake was perfect.
Easy walk from Berkeley campus.
Would go back!

Fabulous Food - Fabulous Value
Fabulous Food - Fabulous Value - Can't say enough good things about this restaurant!
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is a great place to have a nice dinner in an intimate setting. We went on a cold night and sat inside, fortunately where it was very comfortable. Even walking past the outdoor seating though, it felt nice and warm with the heat lamps going.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
The portions are good and the Kobe Bone Marrow Burger and Kobe sliders were divine. You have to try it. There is a relaxed atmosphere the service was friendly and good. Definitely going back.
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Place for Cal Parents.
We wanted to take our son, a student a Cal, to a nice but not fancy dinner. This was the perfect place. Close to campus, great small plates and sushi, and reasonable prices. We went on a Sat evening, around 6, before a football game, and was able to get in and out in an hour. Better service than expected from reading other reviews. Will definitely go again!

Just off Telegraph in Berkeley
Just off Telegraph in Berkeley and very difficult to find healthy and tasty food and most of all clean restaurants in that area. Small but pleasant patio dining as well.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
We came here because we Googled " best hamburgers Berkeley" and this place was high on the list--did NOT expect it to be all that it is.
The kobe sliders are good and The rest of the food is really good, too; service is friendly and genuine--waiters actually take the time to explain dishes, the day's specials, make recommendations, and fawn over guests.
10/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, fancy dining
Its a great place to eat when looking for that hidden gem in Berkeley, especially if you're tired of Asian Ghetto and cheap fish.
10/22/2013 5:00:00 PM
With great restaurants everywhere in the SF East Bay area, our first time experience at Joshu-ya Brasserie leaves us looking for our next opportunity to dine again when we return to the Bay Area
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was amazing, fresh and very tasty. Service is great and you don't have to wait for good sushi to be prepared and served.
10/24/2013 5:00:00 PM
Great neighborhood restaurant
We had a great time at Joshu-ya. Food & service were excellent. They have a wide selection of dishes and a great outdoor dining area.
11/1/2013 5:00:00 PM
Enjoyed the food and vibe at this neighborhood restaurant...will definitely go back.

The food was incredibly delicious! The service was great.

Great food, fair price
We dined with 5 kids on a Saturday night. It was very busy but staff was very accommodating and the food was excellent. Definitely will go back.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
4th visit and never disappointed. Attentive service and tasty food. Usually seated outdoors but chose inside due to a later seating, and experience was enjoyable and noise level reasonable. Will be back again.

BEST SUSHI EVER!
The BEST Sushi I've had since living in Japan over 35 years ago! Melt-on-the-tongue buttery goodness!!
The chefs are all obviously extremely well-trained in the art of Sushi making, presenting their sliced delicacies with precision, flare, finesse … and never, ever over-sauced. They are pleasant and personable as well, answering questions with a friendly warmth. Their culinary creations are as beautiful as they are delightfully tasty.
Service was good, albeit spotty, likely due to the completely packed house. Reservations are an absolute!
*This* establishment is THE place you want to try your first Sushi at and the only place you'll ever want to go after that!!
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
extremely tasty, scallop risotto, sushi, nigiri, next time I will have the kobe beef sliders, all very good,
outdoor patio with heaters,
11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
First visit. I am usually wary of two menu restaurants as they are usually not expert at either. This combination of Tapas and Sushi
works. We were a party of 6, so ordered many dishes (both types) and there was extensive sharing. We were all quite pleased with the food and the service.

Fresh Fresh Fresh
Great sushi restaurant. Fish is extremely fresh and delicious. Great variety for a sushi restaurant. Staff is very friendly
