We seem to like this place
We seem to like this place more every time we go. It has an unusual Indian menu, at least in our experience -- there are dishes here we haven't seen elsewhere. And everything has been very good. I do wish that they offered brown rice as an option, though.

Very good food from across all of India's regions. Each main course comes with salad and rice so that's handy.

First time there, there are
First time there, there are many choices and vegan choices My BAINGAN BHARTA (Roasted eggplants with stewed onions and tomatoes) was a good vegetarian choice recommended by our waitress. My friend ordered the spicy FISH VENDIAM CURRY which had nice flavor. We love their breads - Roti and Garlic Nan were great. Services thtere were excellent. Definitely going back.

Looking forward to next visit
Can't say enough nice things about Passage to India. Went mid-week for dinner so not very busy, but food was amazing, wait staff knowledgable, friendly and efficient. Love Indian food as can share everything -- would recommend that you order fewer entrees than people as the 4 of us were overwhelmed with tasty options and had enough left over to feed another 2 or 3 people. (we had 3 starters / 4 mains / 2 sides / 2 naan)

It's in one of the more non-descript buildings in the older part of Bethesda's restaurant cluster, but this was some of the best Indian food I have had in some time. The menu is divided not just into appetizer/entree sections, but also geographically, so you can explore the cuisine of India's various regions. The appetizer, a medley of sweet potatoes and apples was delicately spiced. The lamb was perfectly cooked and the bread had just the right texture. Service was understated, but always timely.
My only complaint: tables against the wall are too close together, so if the adjacent table is engaged in a loud conversation, there's no way to avoid hearing it or having it distract from your own. That aside, a hearty recommendation.

The menu at Passage to India
The menu at Passage to India is very unique in that all four regions, East, West, North and South, are represented. I usually order my same standard curries and Tikka Masala, palak paneer or some lentils, but at Passage to India, the menu really encouraged me to try something new. This may also be due in part to the combination platters that are available. My boyfriend and I ordered a vegetarian platter which allowed us to sample a variety of flavors. It came with salad and appetizers and a little dessert. It really could have been enough on its own, but we ordered a lamb dish as well. Truly excellent and I know we will visit again.

Loved the elegant decor of Passage to India. The food was very good, although on the expensive side compared to other Indian restauarants I've been too. Their week day lunch is a bargain, so I'll go back during a week day and save the weekend or evening for a special dinner. Our server, dressed in a suit, was professional and attentive.

I have been to Passage to
I have been to Passage to India on many occasions over the years and have never been disappointed. The restaurant's breakout of dishes by region sets it apart from most Indian restaurants and the food is authentic, as attested to by an Indian colleague who ate there with me twice during a visit some time back and raves about it. Definitely a place to return to again and again.

Outstanding creative Indian
Outstanding creative Indian cuisine from the four regions of India. The chef has accommodated requests (for mild
dishes or less ghee). We have enjoyed many dinners there.

Easily, the best Indian Restaurant in DC (Rasika is up there too). The service is phenomenal and the food is always at the highest quality.

Better than ever
The kitchen has been very good for some time, but it was outstanding on this visit. We loved the flavors, yet could not identify the ingredients. It is always a good sign when no single herb or spice dominates. The wine selection, while limited, is well chosen and very reasonably priced.

Excellent Food at a Great Price
I love this little restaurant with its authentic decorations. The food is always excellent and the wait staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The brunch menu offered a taste of three appetizers, one main course and rice pudding dessert for $14.95. Wine and other drinks are separate. Conversation is comfortable and the restaurant is family friendly.

The food was outstanding, and the service is very good considering it was a Saturday night. Relatively inexpensive for such great food. The parking is very easy. Valet is only $5 and a parking garage is right across the street. Overall a great dining experience.

Wonderful flavors, attentive service, a nice calm atmosphere where you can have an actual conversation over a great meal.

Fantastic Indian Food
With selections from the four corners of India, this restaurant offers delectable dishes that compete with one another for their intrigue and fine taste. The ambience is classy yet cheery, with comfortable lighting and furnishings that make you feel right at home. A wonderful place to share dishes, because you should get to taste as much as you can! Probably the best Indian restaurant in Bethesda, and competes with the finest in D.C.

pleasant, good food,
Overall it was a nice dinner but I was disappointed. Service was FAST--too fast actually. The food was good spicy (hot) but lacked flavor. If they could slow done the service so you can have a more leisurely dinner and amp up the spices, it would be a really good place.

Avoid the goat & wines by the glass
My guest and I shared two entrees. The baby eggplant was excellent, but the goat was disappointing. I like goat, but was surprised that the robust flavor to which I am accustomed was missing. It also lacked texture. This is my first disappointment in over two dozen visits to this restaurant. I usually share a bottle of wine with a guest and have liked the short, but well chosen wine list. As my guest was not interested in sharing a bottle, I ordered by the glass. Not only are the choices very limited, but the wines are inferior to even the lowest priced wines by the bottle. Next time, I will order a bottle and take the unconsumed wine home.

All of India
The menu covers all regional differences and is adaptable to all spice intensity preferences.

Great Indian Food in Bethesda
First time going to this place that always seemed crowded. Food was excellent. Service was friendly but a little slow. It's been around a while ...and now will be a regular for us.
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Consistently very good
We particularly like coming here early Sunday afternoons the restaurant has both a unique brunch menu and its complete regular menu. It is also a time when there is plenty of free parking on the street and in the garage across the street.
6/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Why the rush?
Most pleasant experience at all levels... Except for one. Why the rush to bring the bill to the table before it is requested? Why spoil the last and lengthy sip of wine with a business transaction? It seems to imply "You're time is out". I'm not used to that in such a high-level restaurant.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is regional Indian, apparently from home recipes. The Chef's selection specials are outstanding!
7/13/2013 5:00:00 PM
The wait staff is warm and attentive and the food is always delicious. We often order a dish not on the menu and the staff is helpful.

A delicious journey
We very much enjoyed our first-time visit to the restaurant. With the Restaurant Week deal, we ordered appetizers (tasty mussels and scrumptious crab masala), entrees (a meat sampler and a vegetarian paneer plate, both first rate), and a dessert (we both ordered a frozen dessert that fell a little short of the high mark set by other food). We were crammed in a little close to other diners, so it was impossible not to overhear the conversations of the tables to our left and right. Service was attentive and eager to please.

Great food, and vegan friendly
This is a wonderful place for a relaxing peaceful meal. The food is absolutely delicious, wonderful flavors but not overly hot.
There are plenty of vegan options, and they are clearly marked. The atmosphere is calm, never too noisy.

Excellent food and service
It's a cut above the usual Indian restaurant fare, to put it mildly. The combinations of spices are subtle and pungent -- not overwhelmingly hot, but beautifully prepared and balanced. The service is unobtrusive but always attentive. In addition, it is one of the few places in Bethesda where it is possible to converse with your fellow-diners without straining to hear their replies against a din of chatter from the other tables and clattering eating utensils.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly and attentive. We had Chicken Tikka Makhani, a shrimp curry, garlic naan, and a ground lamb appetizer.

Consistently very good
We come here once or twice a month and have never been disappointed. We like the breakdown of the menu by region so that we can sample the different cuisines of the vast country of India.

A rare slip
Passage to India has been consistently very good in every respect, but it slipped on a recent visit. The two glasses of sauvignon blanc had apparently been poured from different bottles and neither was served at the proper temperature. One was chilled to extreme and the other was almost warm. The okra dish we requested be very spicy (specifically 8 on a scale of 10) came out far too tame. We attribute the failings to the waiter, not the kitchen and may avoid that waiter in the future.

First Time for Indian Food
I had previously avoided Indian food because I don't particularly care for spicy food. The server helped me through the menu and I was very satisfied with the chef's sampler that I ordered. The layers of flavor in each dish was wonderful. Next time we go to this restaurant (and there will be a next time) I will try to get some medium spicy food. I can see where some spiciness would add to the flavors already in the food.
While none of us at the table are particularly knowledgeable about food and wine. We each enjoyed our meal and the "Pepper Pot" wine we chose on a whim.

Good food and good service
We came on a Saturday night and had a really lovely dinner including great breads. We were with an adult son who is a foodie and he really enjoyed himself.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Passage to India has the most delicious Indian food period. A la Carte Menu has a very large offering. Service is good. Their chicken Tandori rivals a very good one I had in London. A lot of attention to details. I wish they would open until 3pm for lunch.

The menu, the service, the food are all consistently good.

Another wonderful meal
Every time we go here, we are so happy we did! Excellent food, very relaxing atmosphere in a lovely dining space. Lots of things for the vegetarians and vegans in our group, wonderful breads and condiments, wide selection of starters (don't miss the sweet potato and apple salad).
Service is attentive and gracious without ever being intrusive. On a recent visit, when one of us was fishing ice cubes out of the water glass to put in the wine (de trop, alas), our smiling waiter appeared with a charming pewter pot filled with ice and a pair of tongs.
Just wish there was a Passage to India in Rockville!

Wonderful Indian Food!
We have lived in Bethesda over 3 years, and eat out frequently--love all the places you can walk to here. This was our first visit, and very memorable. The décor is nice, the food is excellent and reasonably priced, and the service is great. We each had the Chef's Special (one lamb & chicken, one seafood) and shared and every dish was excellent. I also loved that our server explained what everything was while serving because some dishes were not familiar.

Excellent, better than ever. Quiet intimate setting for a wonderful meal and relaxed conversation. Make sure to have the spinach with black salt and the baby gourds.

the diverse tastes of India
This restaurant has a varied menu that provides an introduction to the regions of India. The cuisine is excellent and the service is efficient and attentive. Unlike many other modern restaurants, this one is fairly quiet so that one can carry out a conversation and the decor provides the illusion that one is in India.
