True and Steady
Looking for a consistently memorable meal? You cannot go wrong coming to the Red Onion. My wife have never been disappointed over the six years we have frequented this restaurant.

I was very impressed with
I was very impressed with the different culinary delights that the chef offered. $1 Oyster Wednesdays is a great idea and I am telling all my friends about it. It was my first time there, but it won't be my last.

There were four of us and we were astonished at the quality of the food at this restaurant. We knew nothing of the surrounding area except that the Culinary Institute was an hour south. We ate at one of the restaurants at the CIA and the food at The Red Onion compared very, very favorably with that.

Worth the Expense
The aroma was such a tease as eat meal came out of the kitchen. This was a 'to die for' meal I have had in a long time. No one at our table of 4 had a complaint. It was the best liver, ever! YES, it was expensive but well worth it. Lately I don't have dessert because of feeling too full or because the food was too rich or nothing on the menu really pulls me to waste the calories on but we all had dessert because the entrée was so fantastic. Well the dessert didn't disappoint either and all the desserts were so light they didn't push anyone over the edge. Thanks for a wonderful experience. PS the staff was a delight, we felt instantly comfortable with them all.

Had a lovely dinner - all
Had a lovely dinner - all four of us had different tastes and all were satisfied, from a meat lover to a vegetarian to a diner who enjoys spicy ethnic food. Had been here before and will return.
6/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
We have never been disappointed at the Red Onion. Food was excellent. We tried new things this time and were totally pleased. I had the sardines and my wife had the sicilian calamari as appetizers. She had the lamb and I had the seafood risotto. Both excellent choices. The waitress was charming and helpful with dining suggestions. Decor is simple but very tasteful. This is the 2nd time we celebrated our anniversary there. We will return.

As a resident of Woodstock, I consider the "Onion" as the best overall restaurant in the Woodstock- Bearsville- Saugerties area.
Creative cooking with a personal touch. I highly reccommend this restaurant.

Until now I was never a fan of the Red Onion and had not been there for at least 3 years. We had weekend guests who had already sampled all the other restaurants in the area, and so we gave it a try. What a surprise. The continental menu was sophisticated and offered a pleasing and diverse array of appetizers, salads and entrees, with diverse accompaniments. All of us ordered differently and everything was delicious. Portions were generous. Prices are very reasonable and the wine menu compliments any budget.

Relaxing and Delicious
This place is a gem. Form the moment we walked in and were greeted by a very friendly and helpful host to the excellent coffee we had at dessert. Entrees were excellent: Sauteed Calves Liver, Pappardele Bolognese (special).
Service was timely, friendly, and unobtrusive.
The decor is casual, tasteful, and inviting. And there were several different seating areas to choose from as well as two outdoor options.
The bar was extremely cozy.
All of these adds up to an extremely restful and tasty experience.
If you're in the area, don't miss this place.

Great restaurant. The food was perfect for all members of the family. Even my son who hates coconut liked the tai mussels. This restaurant has a great history and Im glad its still going

A terrific restaurant that holds its own with elegant casual spots in Manhattan. Seafood (swordfish, squid ink pasta, roast octopus) was especially good; service is relaxed but attentive and efficient (thanks, Sharon) Only downside was proximity to noisy bar area (which by Manhattan standards wasn't very noisy). Our new favorite in the Woodstock area, surpassing the Bear Cafe.
7/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, service, and ambiance... would surely go back! The Swordfish and Rib Eye were amazing...

Good Restaurant - Superior Food
The Red Onion was great in most ways except the climate control should have been better. The restaurant was too warm.

Great food & Great service
Went on a Wednesday for our 15 wedding anniversary. The $1.00 oysters were fresh, sweet and delicious. The peach and blueberry crisp was a great finish. In season and on point. The wait staff was very knowledgeable and accommodating. Looking forward to our next visit.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent meal, lovely setting
We had a hard time deciding what to order because the selection was so good and everything looked so delicious. The waiter was really nice and helpful in guiding our decisions.

Superb Food and Service
The Red Onion is a lovely spot - not too stuffy but completely upscale. Every member of the staff was gracious, accommodating and interested in our satisfaction. The menu is not extensive - it is produced daily. The food was wonderful. Carefully prepared, nicely presented, perfectly cooked. My companion had fish appetizer and entree and raved about it. I had the beet salad and steak - very satisfying. Great bread. We wanted to linger and the wait staff made us feel comfortable doing that.

The Red Onion is always a
The Red Onion is always a destination for my husband and I visit the Catskills. The chef likes to have fun and you can tell in dishes served. The grilled mussels are a must. The service is always great and the wine list has lots to offer
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Should have done it sooner!!
In all the years since the restaurant started Woodstock we have not been able to dine there. Our children are off to camp and this freed us up and we were happily surprised. Great food and wonderful ambience.

23rd Anniversary Dinner
My wife and I were touring the Hudson Valley wine region and decided to stop by the The Red Onion for dinner. Picked the place based on OpenTable recommendation (thank you) for the region. We both had the Rib-eye steak and it was excellent. Each bite melted in your mouth, the flavor was amazing. The atmosphere was energetic to say the least, some might view it as too noisy. We didn't have a problem with the noise level and the folks at the bar appear to be having a good time. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful with our selections. Overall the food experience surpass our expectations and would recommend stopping by if you are in the region.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Red Onion provided a wonderful meal to all in our party of 5. We all have very diverse tastes and each ordered a meal from vegetarian to steak and enjoyed every morsel. Even our pickiest friend was pleased! Service was great and we would keep this place in our "Go Back Again" list.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food we ordered was well
The food we ordered was well prepared and delicious. We were very impressed that all three entrees were bright out at the same time by two waiters.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
We only ordered lots of appetizers which were all fabulous. Some were so great, that we ordered a second platter such as grilled octopus and oysters. Our waiter spaced out the tapas so they were not all brought out at one time. They also had a great wine list and single malt scotches. We will return whenever we are in the Woodstock area.

My Local Favorite
I've never been disappointed. Great place to take out of town guests. Try the beet salad, the octopus, beans in pesto, and the ravioli. Staff is friendly and the ambiance is fun.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Yum, Yum Yummy!!
Delicious food, great atmosphere and professional level service - what's not to love? Oh, and very reasonable prices! We made a meal of four appetizers and a salad and it was all fantastic. The waiter requested the dishes to come out in an order that made sense with what we ordered - what a nice touch!

Elegant dinner in a country setting
We ate on the gorgeous porch on lovely evening. Everything in the menu was apoealing. I had oysters that were good not great, and my husband had pickled sardines which were outstanding. The skillet mussels were the smallest we had ever seen ( size of raisin) and overlooked but tasty.
Swordfish entree was excellent as was the curry vegetable rice dish.
Service was warm , welcoming and very professional .
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Emphasis here is on highest-quality fresh ingredients, mostly local, flawlessly prepared. The selections are unpretentious but not at all plain, with carefully considered spicing and flavoring for every dish. I never realized that broiled chicken could achieve transcendence but they made it happen. The Asian Street Food Style Grilled Calamari appetizer is "to die for". My flexitarian wife particularly appreciated the creativity that went into the preparation of the flavorful vegetable curry. Everyone in our party of four was totally impressed.
Service was friendly yet professional, despite the Labor-Day weekend crowd. The ambience is cozy but not cramped, and the porch provides an attractive al fresco choice when the weather is good.

Outstanding food and service
Great food, outstanding service (outdoing many ultra-high class settings) in a really nice, low-key, informal setting.

A favorite spot in Woodstock
The nicest staff around.......Very capable folks........I had the cured sardine for appetizer for the first time (it was melt-in-your-mouth delectable); then the Orange Ruffy fillet, their fish for this month or season. I was very happy with it. My date had home-made guacamole and chips, followed by Fish & Chips. He enjoyed them too. I tried Mint Condition for the 1st time as my cocktail (tart and delicious!). My date had a Manhattan. My old complaint with Red Onion in the past was that their menu tended to be unchanged for what seemed like a long time. I'm glad to see that their menu is more evolving and not stale. It's one of my top-3 restaurants in Woodstock. For me it is #1 when it comes to good service and unobtrusive staff.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Was referred by owner of house I rented nearby. We mixed up our reservation time and yet accommodated. The food was superb!
We enjoyed our meal tremendously. I had the lamb chops and my husband had the steak. Both cooked to perfection.
i would recommend without any hesitation.

Don't Pass This Up
If you are in the area and have an opportunity to visit the Red Onion, don't pass it up. The menu selection, creativity, preparation, and service were outstanding! Very friendly group too. Try finding a restaurant that knows how to prepare a fresh sardine or pork belly app.! There were 6 of us and we ordered a lot of food.... all great.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
We go upstate a lot in the summer and one of our favorite places is the red onion. You know you its money well spent.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
We keep going back...
We are only in the Western Catskills for 5/6 months every year. We try to visit the Red Onion at least 2 or three times during our stay, even if our drive is almost 1 1/2 hours, one way.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything was fabulous. Oysters specials on Wednesdays - a real treat. Steak cooked to perfection, and everyone was terrific and attentive. The bread (crust) was to die for, and all in all a 10+ rating!
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
perfect evening, great food
perfect evening, great food great service, cozy corner table for two. A perfect interlude on a whirlwind trip from Maine to NY and back in a day. would recommend for locals and fro those "from away" . out of the chaos of Woodstock but just minutes away
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
A bit out of town , but definitely worth the drive. Great food and excellent and attentive service.

Romantic date night
Beautiful restaurant with great food and service. Elegant without being stuffy!
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
We picked the Red Onion as it is a meeting place between our daughter and us, The old farm house has plenty of parking, The service was excellent and the food great. Found the prices to be reasonable. We will return in the future.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nicely presented upscale and right
Three couples all had different dishes, and everyone was nicely done. From appetizer of stone hot mussels and Sancerre wine we drank with it to the beautifully cooked liver and balsamic onions, or truffled raviolior the homey chicken or excellent fish and chips .everyone was pleased with their choice...portions are right. And although no one felt like having desert six spons for a taste of the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream finished the evening nicely.

A Favorite Revisted
We were so happy to eat at The Red Onion again. It is our favorite place in the Woodstock area. The food and atmosphere fits our style - informal with great, creative food. We started with the roasted mussels, followed by the pork chop/creamed parsnips/kale and lamb/potato/minted peas entrees. Delicious! The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and not overbearing. Our only complaint was that the lesser staff might have been a bit aggressive, wanting to take our cocktail glasses and plates away before we were ready.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
It's worth the trip!
We drove up from NYC to do some weekend leaf-peeping. When we arrived we noticed that many diners were willing to endure long waits to get a table and we soon found out why. Everyone in my party was beyond thrilled with the food, service and ambiance. Our actual experience far surpassed all reviews. Make a reservation and check this place out, you won't be sorry.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
We feel this is the best all around restaurant in the Woodstock area. There are many choices and we have tried most. The service is excellent, the food is great and the pacing is great. We will return.
10/19/2013 5:00:00 PM
Splendid food as usual but the staff seemed distracted by a busy night with what looked like a private party upstairs. As a result, we waited a while before being even greeted by the host and waited again before our waitress stopped by for our drink order. We had our usual fine time at one of our favorite restaurants and the staff did a great job but couldn't hide the fact that they were scrambling to keep up.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
very nice atmosphere. causal yet classy. food and service were very good. would definitely return to explore the menu further.

One of my favorites
One of the best meals I've ever had, hands down. The mussels to start we delicious and came in a great broth. My girlfriend had the seafood polenta, which was great. The scallops were cooked very well. I had the steak frites and two days later I'm still dreaming of it. Go!
