Food and service were both
Food and service were both great. Bar selection very good for wine, beer and liquor, however, they ran out of a couple different kinds of gin while we were there. Someone's not minding the bar par if you're running out of liquor early on a Saturday night.

Wood fired foods, great beverages, amazing service! I'm sold on this spot and will be back soon.

Unique and Understated
We appreciated the understated nature of the environment coupled with unique and very high quality dishes. While service was a tad slow, every dish was superb. Not a place for to eat and run.

Excellent food and service
The menu is varied and has a number of interesting choices. It was hard to decide what to have. The food preparation and presentation was excellent. The setting is quite nice with an open kitchen. There was also a good selection of beers on tap.

Wonderful place to eat
Had a romantic meal with the lady, enjoyed every minute. Great food, and very nice atmosphere. A+

Historic and Delicious
Great food, great atmosphere. Love the wine list and the drink options as well as the interesting food choices. Would like to see more fish/veggie options as there are an abundance of meat choices. Upstairs hayloft is very cool. Can't wait to go back again and sit in the 'library'.

Great bar upstairs with good wine list, fabulous Old Fashions & knowledgeable servers. Restaurant downstairs has fun menu with small & large plates. Tomato heirloom salad, green green salad, sand dab , lamb meatballs & steak special were our favorites. Service was wonderful !!

This is an incredible restaurant you must not miss out on experiencing!! Brilliance in flavor & freshness of ingredients in a well executed & thought out menu. Drinks were great, service was pleasant & not over bearing, food was amazing! Half way through dinner suggested to my husband we come back the next day!!! Can't stop talking about this place...for all the right reasons! Nothing negative to note!

Great before concert dinner
Enjoyed the Sunday night roast dinner before going to Monkees concert. Though they did not have the traditional roast beef, substituted roast pork along with roast lamb, the meal was comfort food at its best with two side dishes and Yorkshire pudding and mashed potatoes. We chose the braised carrots and beans all served beautifully on a single platter for two at $25 apiece. But the cocktails were the best park of the night. I had the speciality old fashioned which I would rate as one of the best I've had plus an after dinner drink of chocolate stout, brandy, nod rum.

A great experience!
While traveling in Portland I was looking for a new place for dinner with colleagues. Raven & Rose was a hit! Great food, excellent wine list and exceptional service. Will be back the next time we're in town.

Was really looking forward for dinner. A repeat of a previous great meal. Forgot the menu was very unique. Read that very limited for a celiac

Everything was perfect. Started upstairs with a Whiskey Wednesday cocktail. David Shenault and his bar team absolutely know what they are doing from making perfect classic cocktails to "spiritual" inspirations. Dinner was unbelievable. Seated at our favorite table. Starters included a cucumber and radish salad. Ice cold. Perfect blend of salt and vinegar. Tasted like summer. Chef sent out a palate-cleanser of yogurt, pickled sardine and citrus granita. Perfect transition to King salmon with roasted veggies nestled on a cauliflower puree. Dessert. Yum. De-constructed goat cheesecake, graham cracker crust crumbles, huckleberries, pickled citrus on top. Back up to the Rookery for bourbon and music. Couldn't be better.

Wonderful in every respect
This was our first visit to this restaurant and we were very impressed overall. The menu was limited but we both found excellent choices in the fried rabbit and the short ribs. We also found wines by the glass to complement the food. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the service. This was probably the best service we have had in recent memory. In addition, they were very helpful in trying to locate a sources for a wine we were hoping to purchase by the bottle. The atmosphere is similar to a bistro in a mountain lodge. Highly recommended.

Great food and ambiance
Six of us, 3 adults and three children, 7-13, had a wonderful time. The servers were very accommodating, the shared "small plate" starters were a good way to get everyone engaged, and the entrees and desert were delicious. A great evening all around. Adding a fixed service charge to the check is a good idea.

Good but not great
At our table, sand dabs and rabbit were ordered. Actually, while sand dabs was "plural" on the menu, it was "singular" on the plate. However, it was tasty. The terrine was very good but if one wanted bread, it was a side on the menu ($4). I'm old school and expect bread to accompany the meal. Having said that, the wait staff were excellent. The building is the restored Ladd Carriage House and it beautiful.

Upscale and cozy
Raven and Rose is an excellent restaurant that defies easy categorization. The menu has a distinct British/Irish influence - puddings, rabbit, peas, mustard - but is neither traditional nor eclectic (nor an eclectic take on traditional). The food simply *is*, and, fortunately, is uniformly excellent. The dressing on my beetroot salad was more a sauce than a dressing, a sticky, spicy red sauce that coupled perfectly with the sweetness of the watermelon and candied nuts. My "rabbit done two ways" entree involved both grilled rabbit breast(?) and three pieces of buttermilk fried rabbit (think a small fried chicken) over crisp-tender green beans smothered in a light mustard cream. Must go back for the small plates.

I gave a 3 in Ambience because they turned the lighting in the restaurant down twice [I guess to signal dinner time, and then bedtime?]. I have been in restaurants where the lighting changes before, but it is normally more subtle, and normally light enough to still see your food. We had to hold a flashlight to our check in order to read it properly. I'm not trying to be mean, the people there are very friendly, the food is generally great [some of it is a little weird, but I'm not that adventurous so ignore my taste on that part], and the interior of the building is gorgeous. The lighting level was distracting though.

Friendly staff, great small plates
I was visiting from the SF Bay Area on rainy Thursday night and ducked in the Raven & Rose. I was made to feel at home, as a single dinner, asked where I would like to sit and asked for a spot at the downstairs bar. The hostess said it was one of her favorite spots to eat. Alan was so friendly and helpful, behind the bar. I had a wonderful green pepper soup, that had layers of flavor and one of the small plates of lamb meatballs. It was great with a tomato and onion type stew with the presentation in a small cast iron skillet. I will be back ,to work my way through their menu. Great atmosphere and plan bringing my wife the next time.
Take a moment to check out the upstairs rookery bar - pretty amazing.

Very accommodating to our group
We had a group of six from a conference. They provided a semi-private location in the corner that allowed us to enjoy the ambience of the restaurant while carrying on conversations amongst ourselves. Interesting menu with good food choices not often seen (at least, by us). Good wine list. Reasonable prices. Good value.

A very nice addition to the SW end of downtown Portland!! Beautiful building and much attention to detail. Food was delicious!

As a regular, i enjoy the food here very much. Great people and service. Post on there Facebook page many times. Trying to get into one of their cocktail classes.

Died and went to food heaven!
Simply one of the best dining experiences I have ever had -- and trust me, I've had many! Everyone offered superb recommendations and were beyond friendly. Not a single complaint about any of the dishes -- cooked to perfection and tasted outstanding. I highly recommend the gnocchi, salmon and rabbit! The wine was delicious....
A perfect dining experience! Well worth every penny!

exceptional experience every time
This is the either or sixth time we've enjoyed a lovely meal here. It is such a treat.

This place is wonderful. High prices, but worth every cent. Food was delicious. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Interesting menu includes rabbit caesar salad. Service was a bit slow, but server was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Noise level was up, but it was lunchtime.
10/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
a pleasant surprise
The food was surprisingly good and the service was excellent. Next time I would ask for a table in a quieter part of the restaurant, which would mean not being able to watch the goings-on in the kitchen, but that's the trade-off.
Very interesting and varied beer selection.

Great food in an historic setting
The experience at Rose and Raven starts with the faithful restoration of this historic 19th century carriage house. It feels like you have left the city and are dining in a country inn. The gnocci was superb -- great sauce. Retiring to the upstairs bar, catch live music on a Wednesday night with a prohibition era roadhouse feel. I'll be back

This is a great downtown restaurant
First, the cocktails were superb! We both started with salads, which were sized perfectly and very tasty. My spouse had the salmon & I had the steak special. Both were cooked as ordered and were accompanied by delicious sides. We finished with the butterscotch pudding, and that was great! Throughout the evening, the service was great. Check out their events; they all sound like fun (and delicious).

happy all around
not an area of town I often expect to find small plates with a twist. Took a work group here and we shared many smalls - all of our dishes were good or very good. Esp enjoyed the rabbit ceasar salad and the daily fish.

The interior was quite large, not what I expected, very nice.

Delightful and fun
We saw the restaurant and name in Grimm TV show and wondered where it was located. My friend found that it was only blocks from the Portland Art Museum. As we were headed to the museum for a limited show it was ideal for our excursion. I was delighted to find it a historical building with three levels of working restaurant and bar. They have their own in house bakery. I eat Paleo and requested the roast beef sandwitch without bread which was no challenge to them. The wine list was great and the wait staff clear and confident as well as attentive. The manager took us on a tour of the restaurant after our brunch and we found a lovely hay loft high rafter bar and waiting area. We will dine here again. Good parking near by too.

Went for lunch. Specials were fantastic, service swift, knowledgable and unobtrusive. Food was well prepared, interesting and delicious. Space is beautiful and comfortable. Highly recommend.

Great peri-theater location
We came here before seeing a musical at the Keller Auditorium. It is a 5 minute (brisk) walk from the auditorium, which makes it a great location for either before or after the theater. The wine list includes local and international selections. We started with a rabbit sausage appetizer and salad - both were delicious. We then shared the lamb meatballs and the chanterelle/huitlacoche crepes. The entree sizes are not overly generous, but as two average sized adults, we had plenty to eat. We probably would have added dessert if we had enough time. The service was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly without being overbearing. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. We enjoyed our meal very much and we would certainly return.

Great and interesting food
Unique combinations of flavors and presented well at a resonable price.

Cool staff, diverse menu
The building itself is a historic landmark, and looks like something out of a Harry Potter film (English Tudor?) Staff was very welcoming and attentive. Menu is more American Colonial than American contemporary-- lots of fresh game choices (2 rabbit entrees, and quail spatchcock, for instance), with something for everyone. Vegetable and meat dishes are paired wonderfully, and eclectically described (there's a flatbread topped with pancetta that is served with shears for carving slices....very creative!). Overall, a great experience.

Gnocci and bone cracker
Gnocci was absolutely amazing and we enjoyed the novelty of a bone cracker. Noise level was a bit distracting, but otherwise, great service and definitely wonderful food!
11/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
Had a great time. Food was wonderful. Staff was very helpful and easy to talk with. Was a bit louder than what I had expected for the downstairs dining area, but still nice. Upstairs, in the lounge, it was definitely energetic! They had just been seen on the TV show "Grimm", so they had been very busy the past week. Looking forward to going back again sometime.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Needed a nice place for dinner before a show nearby. This fit the bill perfectly. The drinks are bit pricey, but everything else seemed in line with the food scene in Ptown. The gnocchi was amazing, the 'meat preparation' of the day was delicious, and there is a respectable wine list. We had heard that the service could be trying, but found the wait staff wonderfully friendly and very much on top of things. Nice ambience, great old house. Upstairs bar and pool table! Will be going back.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
We almost exploded....
....like on Grimm. However, there were no nefarious plans at work-only delicious dish after delicious dish. Everything was fantastic, from the huitlacoche crepe to the chanterelle/sweet potato stuffed cabbage. And that was just the veggie dishes. Spatchcocked quail, sand dab, and beef short ribs with Yorkshire pudding were notable fan favorites, as well.
Drinks were great, and our server was excellent.
The food may be deadly to blutbaden (see Grimm reference), but our near-explosion was only due to our copious consumption of quality comestibles!

Great place to go before events
Great place to go before events at the Schnitz. Good choices between starters, small plates, and sides so that you can "customize" your meal. House wine is quite expensive (but good) so peruse before you select it, there are less expensive options . It is great to have a new option in this part of town
11/19/2013 4:00:00 PM
Good new business lunch option
The neighborhood East of Park Blocks and North of PSU needed another good lunch spot for business and special events and this fits the bill. Well prepared, well presented options, attentive service. The soups in particular are excellent.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
My wife and I were out of town for the holiday and chose Raven and Rose for our Thanksgiving meal. We had a lunch there earlier in the week and were very impressed. For the big day the meal was excellent and the service was prompt and courteous. We also chose to get wines to match each course and each was spot on . We went up stares for a drink afterward and found it to be a very couples friendly hangout.
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
My husband and I had not been to R & R before, but the reviews looked good and we decided to try it. We took our elderly mothers too. All four of us had a wonderful time. Very well done. Really a perfect Thanksgiving meal!

another good dinner
This was our third dinner at Raven and Rose during the past 6 months. An interesting menu with the food always well prepared and nicely presented.

Are we royals?
We sure felt like it. We've eaten here around 10 times. Each time the entire experience is more and more enjoyable. Exquisite food quality, presentation, and taste. Personal and sincere service. When I think of it, I just want to go again, right now.

Great food, excellent ambiance. We went there with friends and had a great time. The food was incredible.

The food was excellent with
The food was excellent with some unique combinations that would delight the most discriminating foodie! I enjoyed cabbage stuffed with chantrelle mushrooms very good flavor combination. Good selection of beverages to fit your meal. Service was a little slow at first, but picked up. This would not have been a problem on any other night, as the ambiance would have lent itself for lingering, but our party had another engagement afterwards.
12/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
I was in town for work and this restaurant was recommended by the person next to me on the plane. It did not disappoint. The food was truly delicious. We had the crab starter which preparation was light and refreshing. My entree was the rabbit two-ways which was absolutely delicious.

Great downtown addition
wonderful menu - small plates as well as entres, good list of sides, very accommodating to vegetarians, all reasonably priced. Good wine list - bottles and by the glass. near downtown cultural activities. Our third visit - there'll be more.
