Tiny place with big, bold
Tiny place with big, bold flavor. Definitely need reservations for this restaurant. Only 6 tables inside and about the same on patio. Great, friendly service. Food was amazing. Highly recommend the fish tacos, carnitas, and don't forget empanadas! Beans tasted like someone's grandma made them from scratch! A little on the pricey side but worth the "farm to table" quality.

Small but lovely restaurant
Small but lovely restaurant serving unique and very fresh Mexican food. Dishes were tasty and light, not the typical fare
found in similar venues. Wonderful salsas, guacamole was special, carnitas moist and very delicious.
Servers were welcoming. Clearly the owner is proud of his thoughtful offerings.

currently a charming little
currently a charming little neighborhood gem, alas, soon to expand in a BIG way. Small plates that are more like eating m
Latin /Mexican style tapas, best to share plates. They were out of many dishes early in the evening on a weekend so prepare several choices before ordering to prevent disappointment. Our server Mindy was an absolute delight, hope to get her on our next visit.

Amazingly delicious, fresh,
Amazingly delicious, fresh, inventive food. Flavored are just so developed and authentic. Ingredient quality is very thoughtful. Those corn tortillas, made to order, yum. Don't miss the Pumpkin donuts for dessert !!!

Great neighborhood gem!
I've been here a number of times and the restaurant is excellent. You can tell they are using fresh ingredients and service is spot on.. Would highly recommend checking it out.

great authentic mexican food
great authentic mexican food the best that we have had
5/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Very good hidden gem
Reservations are highly recommended due to extremely small size of the restaurant.
Service was kind and helpful. Could've been a bit faster.
First we ordered drinks. I ordered a Horchata and my fiancé, a chelada.
Horchata was excellent, though small. The Chelada, same size, was the best I've had. Beats puerto azul any day.
Tortilla chips with guacamole topped with pistachio and crispy bacon. To me, unusual but very interesting.
Ricotta empanadas were good, the sauce was the best. Crab and shrimp ceviche was our favorite.
Braised pork tacos were moist and flavorful. Portions are small, but do pack a lot of bold flavor.
Horchata ice cream with squash fritters, must try.
I would highly recommend Zona Rosa, can't wait for their expansion

One of our favorite restaurants
My wife and I go to Zona Rosa almost every week because we love the food and atmosphere. I highly recommend it.

Big mexican flavors in teeny place!
Fantastic upscale mexican food in a teeny little place on The Alameda. This place could very easily be overlooked, but you would be missing out on some delicious grub. How can you pass up guacamole with bacon and pistachios? The taqueria offerings are fantastic including scallops with butternut squash. My friend had the salmon tacos and was humming with delight as she ate. The service was a little slow, but I think that was more the pace of the restaurant itself. It's not a place for a rushed meal. All in all, we will definitely be back for more!

Mexican with a Twist
We enjoyed a very good lunch at Zona Rosa, the food was very tasty, it was not the usual Mexican food that you find in most Mexican restaurants. The guacamole and chips are worth a visit! I had the salmon tacos, and my friend had the blue corn enchiladas....yum! They make their own chips here. The service was very friendly and spot on. The restaurant is very small, but they also have outdoor seating. Will definitely return.

Unique Mexican Cuisine
The food at Zona Rosa is nothing like I have found in the San Jose area -- authentic, unique and delicious!
5/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
Zona Rosa is definitely a neighborhood gem. The food is outstanding and servers are hard working and attentive. Down sides are there and you have to be prepared and accepting of them in order to fully enjoy all that Zona Rosa has to offer. The key down side is that the space is SMALL - so it's hard to go without a reservation and the noise level is off the charts, so don't go expecting to be able to have a deep conversation there - for that, an outside table under powerful heat lamps is the best bet. The food portions are SMALL and somewhat pricey but we found that they filled us up so we weren't bursting at the seams and the dishes are unique, beautifully presented, and oh so flavorful. Interesting drinks but need a wine based margarita!

Great dinner with lots of interesting and tasty options.

This is the third time I've eaten at Zona Rosa and while I love the food, I have to say that the value is just not there. I took a friend there for her birthday...we each ordered the tacos...two very small tacos with minimal toppings and they were $15-16 for each entrée. For dessert we shared a crepe that had a BIT of caramel drizzle, a few berries and it was $7 or 8; if there was something substantial to this dessert I might understand it. Overall, we had two taco entrees, four sangrias, chips and salsa and the dessert crepe; with tip, I dropped $98!

Visited Zona Rosa for the first time this weekend. Absolutely loved it.
Food is absolutely delicious and uniquely prepared. Smaller portions served but enough for everyone to share.
Restaurant is small now, they are expanding soon.
Would recommend this to my friends.
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Not your typical neighborhood Mexican restaurant as the dishes are more interesting than your typical fare. Portion size a bit small and prices on the high side. Great service and friendly atmosphere.

Zona Rosa Continues to Thrill
We have been eating at Zona Rosa since they first opened and were a bit worried that they might go down in quality once they had become established (we've seen it happen at other local restaurants). The great news is that their food and service is just as wonderful as ever. The scallops we had last night were the freshest, melt-in-your-mouth, delights. We will continue to go to Zona Rosa as often as possible.
6/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
we love rosa!
Zona Rosa is an outstanding experience:
excellent mexican food, very good service.
Minor issue is that sometimes (due to to our frequent visits)
the wooden lovely tables are sticky...
We'll regularly come back to Zona Rosa!

Enjoyed our meal, cute place
Very happy to have eaten dinner here---had a bit of a hard time finding the place. Service was good, and food was excellent.
Will go back again!
6/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food at Zona Rosa is fresh, inventive and made with organic and high quality ingredients. I love the spin that is put on traditional dishes using pickled vegetables, goat cheese and pistachios. It is one of my favorite restaurants in South Bay
6/26/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great Little Place!
The food here is dynamite! Mexican food like it is supposed to be. The place is small, but the staff make you feel right at home. Really enjoyed!!
7/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fabulous authentic food
Organic, locally grown food. Not your typical Mexican restaurant of rice and beans. The mole is mouth watering!
7/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always Yummy Authentic Mexican
Very cute restaurant (better for groups of 4 or less) with authentic salsas and tacos. Amazing ambiance and desserts.
7/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious Meal at a NeighborhoodGem
The chicken enchiladas are always a favorite when I go to Zona Rosa. The enchiladas are filled with tender chicken and covered in a delicious mole sauce. The guacamole with bacon and pistachios makes a great start to your dining experience.
The small neighborhood restaurants has friendly and personal service.
We would have loved to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful weather, but the high traffic volume on The Alameda didn't lend itself to conversation.

Long on charm, short on tastiness
This is a charming restaurant on San José's The Alameda. It offers several outside tables for summertime diners and makes very good use of the extremely limited inside seating area. About the only drawback to the place I identified during my first visit was the food! I ordered a vegetarian dish--the Blue Corn Enchilada--which was supposedly composed of sweet potato, poblano chile, caramelized onion, artisan cheese, and tomatillo almond pesto. The artisan cheese was virtually nonexistent, while the tomatillo almond pesto, although plentiful, was quite bland. All in all, it was a seriously unexciting dish, as was the Agua Fresca Mimosa drink and the Tres Salsa appetizer. Hopefully, I'll make better choices in my next visit!
7/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was very different but
Food was very different but fantastic. All types of tacos from seafood, to beef (such as rib meat, steak, etc) to vegetarian with goat cheese. The scallop taco had a warm sweet glaze that set off the deep fried scallop. hmmmmm
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Unique and delicious
a lovely gourmet twist on the tacoria taco. creative and original flavor combinations. Quality and taste are consistent. I love bringing friends to this place for one on one conversation. And the specialty mixed drinks are amazing! I have yet to find anything I do not like at this point little place.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was excellent. Loved being able to sit outside.
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Looking forward to returning
First time at Zona Rosa...awesome unique mexican food. This is not your $3 taco stand, so expect to pay a little more for fresh made, generous portions, fresh ingredients. The guacamole portion is huge - definitely splurge on the bacon and pistachios! My vegetarian blue corn crepes were fantastic. Albondigas Fundido - yum! And dessert - Pumpkin Fritters with Horchata ice cream. Where has Horchata ice cream been all my life? The taste will remind you of deep fried ice cream, but better! Unique cocktails too, always a plus! Get thee to Zona Rosa! Be prepared to wait if you come during peak hours, the restaurant is small. However, they are expanding in to an empty space next door in the fall!

Super Yummy Food
Love this place. Have been twice and will go back again. Drinks are great, especially Sangria. We loved the cerviche tacos, special soup and the desert is amazing. It's really small so book ahead.

Recommended by friends - we're glad
Friends raved about the food so we went and were not disappointed. Menu is interesting, and execution is wonderful. We had nachos with carnitas, and all three enchiladas on dinner menu, and loved all of it. It's a very small place - we moved from inside to outside because of the noise level and were happy there. Waitstaff is spread a little thin but very friendly and eager to please. We're looking forward to going back!

Little place with big taste!
So fun to go to a neighborhood place. Tiny but packs the flavor in...great mojito, guacamole so fresh and tasty, homemade chips, and lovely entrees. Always lovely to finish off with the dessert...with the name I can't remember...but the description ...two little donuts with horchata ice cream. It is small and cozy so a bit noisy but hey that's what it's like in the neighborhood. Like a lively family party.

8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food is excellent; portions
Food is excellent; portions rather small for the price; very small enclosure - some might term it "cozy."; not the place for a private conversation. Being on Open Table is a plus; only restaurant I know where a customer has to pay extra for chips. Salsas as delicious.
8/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Late lunch on the front Patio
Found this new little Gem on Open Table....beautiful Sunday afternoon to sit out on the front patio. The menu is really inventive & interesting as were the cocktails. Mohito was delish...not too sweet & plenty of mint.
The Scallop & aspargas Blue Corn Tacos were amazing & also really liked the Salmon Taco. The Guacomole w/Pictachios was really a treat as well. We had a great server who took care of us & was really interesting to talk with. It's very tiny so if you blink, you'll miss it but definitely worth checking it out.....we'll be coming back soon.

Another nice meal
Several things have brought us back to Zona Rosa: spicy and interesting food, wife loves the sangria, and nice location in our neighborhood. Adding Opentable for reservations was a huge improvement over the old system. Sangria this time was a different recipe, still good, but not as yummy as the prior recipe with a hint of cinnamon. Tres salsas are excellent, especially the chipotle-cashew one, and the duck enchiladas were tasty and filled with a lot of meat. Keep in mind that it's easy to crest $100 for 2 people, if you get the sangria carafe. But we'll be back.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
upscale mexican food in small venue
very small neighborhood spot with upscale style and food. delicious and we will be going back
HORCHATA ICE CREAM was especially a treat
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent dining experience
This small quaint restaurant provides an ambience that isn't found very often in San Jose. The delicious food certainly adds to the unique dining experience. The chicken enchiladas were EXCELLENT. The chicken was flavorful and tender, and the mole sauce was perfect. The white sangria was some of the best I've ever had.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Zona Rosa has excellent dishes that delight the senses. You won't regret the experience.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
I like to treat my friends and relatives to birthday dinners here. Everyone I have brought here has been quite happy and impressed with the relaxed atmosphere, along with the excellent food.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Zona Rosa is our favorite restaurant in the area, and we're lucky enough to live within walking distance. Whenever there's a friend in town, we take them to Zona Rosa! Food and service are awesome. And it's consistently good. It's not cheap, especially when you add in the sangria, which is amazing. However, the food is a good value.
10/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wonderful. Great flavors.
Wonderful. Great flavors. Many variations on traditional recipes

Can't believe it's in San Jose!
So I have only just been to Zona Rosa, but it is my new all-time favorite place. I almost said "favorite San Jose restaurant", but that diminishes how good it is. There were three of us so I could taste three entrees, a soup and a salad, and finally I can say there is a top notch, creative, charming neighborhood restaurant in San Jose. Cozy ambience--I felt like we were on vacation in another country. Transporting! Eat here. If this place can't make it in San Jose, all is lost.
11/1/2013 5:00:00 PM
The best fish taco I have ever had
Smokey salmon, perfect sauces served in appropriate portion sizes. A South of the Border restaurant authentically producing food sans re-fried cheesy grease (you know who you are in Santana Row) at a price that will surprise and please. Careful attention to gluten free needs.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
The BEST homemade corn tortillas
The BEST homemade corn tortillas I've ever eaten! The attention to details in the decor and food is outstanding. Great little place!
11/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
Not your typical Mexican eatery
This is a small bistro serving unique gourmet dishes with an overall Mexican theme. The food is excellent and the service was attentive when I was there on a Sunday evening. If you like big platters, chips and salsa, and icy cold margaritas: forget it! You'll find none of those at Zona Rosa. If you want to try something a bit different, then Zona is a good choice. The food is fresh and never has overpowering heat. You can take grandma here, and it won't scorch her palette.
A few trivialities: water is served in old tequila bottles and poured into jars, not glasses. There is no liquor. Enchiladas are served in a crockery dish with a 1" rim. No condiments are offered. Prices are a bit steep. Hebrew speakers: it's not THAT kind of zona.
11/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
Amazing Mexican food
Greatest Mexican in the Bay Area. Jorge the chef is just amaling. Do try the enchiladas de albóndigas and the buñuelos de calabaza.
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
A very warm, friendly feel when you walk into this small restaurant brimming with energy. I loved the vegetable and chicken enchiladas and the guacamole and chips are a must. The sauce used on the enchiladas was very tasty. The staff was very welcoming and aimed to please. I will definitely share this place with more friends.
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
Second time there, food has been great both times. It's a bit cramped and when busy it can take a bit for service, but I never felt I was forgotten so while things were delayed occasionally it all still came out in a reasonable time. Food was definitely worth the wait.
