For the past several years I have been returning to one of my many favorite Italian restaurants in the Gas Lamp district. I arrived by myself around 6:30pm without a reservation. The place was not busy. I opted to sit outside under the heat lamps to enjoy the happy hour with a glass of their house red wine and to observe the passersby.
I ordered my usual $36 ossobuco Milanese, a veal shank slowly braised with red wine and diced vegetables and served over a bed of saffron risotto. Did I say I love risotto? The ossobuco was as I remember it from last year, just as good.
Table service is consistently good here as was the case today. My total bill was a very affordable $50 so I left very full and satisfied.

A girlfriend and I stopped
A girlfriend and I stopped by to have a glass of wine and appetizers before heading out for the evening. We each had a glass (reasonably priced for the selections), and shared the stuffed mushrooms and bruschetta. Each I would highly recommend and would eat again. We showed up around 9:45 PM, so there were only about 5 parties in the entire place - most on the patio. I look forward to going back and trying the full menu!

Excellent variety and service
Panevino handled our group of 12 gracefully and attentively. Nearly all the dishes pleased the eaters and the breadth of the menu was quite welcome.

Great Italian food, excellent service, cool atmosphere.

A large group of professional colleagues (13 of us) recently had dinner at Osteria Panevino. The food was delicious and the service was great. We all ended up having bites of each other's meals as the portions were generous. Every meal on the table was tasty. The only small glitch was trying to pay at the end. I certainly understand the difficulty and inconvenience of running 13 different bills. The guest challenge is that this was a business meal and each person has to get a receipt and many people don't travel with cash anymore. We figured it out and everyone loved the gathering. I would recommend Osteria Panevino to other San Diego diners.

I could not have been more
I could not have been more pleased. Our waiter, Guiseppe, was outstanding, handling our group of 12 with aplomb. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent.
I will return next time I'm in San Diego.

Osteria Panevino is a great
Osteria Panevino is a great little Italian Restaurant in the heart of the Gaslamp district with excellent food and many choices on the menu. There is also a large wine list. Make reservations ahead of time. The place was full on a Friday evening at 6 PM. Our group of 8 people thoroughly enjoyed the food and service.

Pleased with attentive service
Pleased with attentive service and delicious food (veal parm, lamb ravioli in mushroom sauce). Wine & food prices on the high side, but still a good value given the quality of food and service.

Authentic and outstanding
Authentic and outstanding Italian food. The hand crafted pasta and sauces were mouthwatering.

Best San Diego Gaslamp restaurant
This is simply the very best restaurant in the gaslamp. Best food, best service, best gaslamp location, best everything. Order the Ahi, it is heavenly. I have been going there for 15 years, I have had most of their menu, all is exceptionally great. Their homemade pasta is to die for.

I come here on every trip to San Di
Always excellent; I never miss dining here when I'm in San Diego. Extensive and varied menu; it's hard to choose. Food and service are consistently outstanding. It's also a pretty restaurant. My favorites are the Pappardelle with Ragu and the Rigatoni Carbonara. The wine list has good selections in moderate price ranges. I can't find a negative thing to say!

Food was very fresh and excellently prepared. Had the fried calamari appetizer and was perfectly prepared! Then between the three of us we ordered the fettuccini with swordfish, crab and lobster ravioli, and gnocchi. All excellent! Would definitely come back!

The FourSquare comments said the service was poor but I had a fabulous time. Place was busy and the staff was circulating. Food was outstanding and I would go back in a minute.

Willl Be Back...Again!
Have dined here before and has always been excellent. This visit was no exception. Great atmosphere, food, and service! Had friends in from San Jose and they too were impressed. Also portions are very good size...no one goes away hungry! One of the best Italian restaurants in the Gaslamp. Highly recommend.

The restaurant was fantastic.
The restaurant was fantastic. Food and service were outstanding. The reservation made by open table was not made. Luckily they had a table, we were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary.

One of best Italian meals in U.S.
We went for a pre-marathon meal and I would have been happy with an average pasta dish. Instead I was treated to an incredible lamb ravioli. I have traveled (and dined) extensively for work, and been to Italy many times. This dish was one of the best I have had outside Italy. The server was very cheerful and had apparently been with the restaurant for many years. Great evening, great meal!

Celebrated our 27th anniversary
Celebrated our 27th anniversary and we noted it on our Open Table reservation. They held the nicest table right on the street and the food and service was excellent. My bride loved it as well.

Upscale experience in DT San Diego
My friends and I came to Panevino during my best friend's Bachelorette Weekend in San Diego. We decided to do a nicer dinner before our big night out and the girls loved it! It's in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego which makes for a perfect setting. The server was attentive, knowledgeable and kind. The food was outstanding, everyone in our party of 8 loved it! It's a smaller restaurant setting, so I would recommend making reservations for Friday-Sunday. The portions were generous and very filling. You definitely will not be disappointed!

Best Italian dining!
First time visitor to San Diego, I chose this restaurant out of a list of many Italian choices. I was so glad I chose Osteria...I hit the jackpot! Everything about my experience reminded me of my travels & dining in Italy!! The food was amazing and the service was wonderful! It was a memorable dining experience! Can't wait to return to San Diego & re-visit this dining gem!

There were 6 of us in our dining party - we were seated promptly and immediately our attentive waitress made sure we had drinks, menus & bread. Our youngest guest, 12 years old, pronounced with surety that "This ceasar salad is the best I've ever had"! The arugula and mozarella salad was tasty. The main courses we partook of included: the lobster ravioli; the sea bass with a spicy tomato sauce and risotto; the potato gniochi with a creamy garlic sauce; All meals were excellent; our oldest guests, 88 and 92 years young, both enjoyed their dishes.. the bowtie pasta and the special of the evening, risotto with seafood. I had the canole for desert and young lass had the creme brulee. We'll be going back for sure!

Bravo to Osteria Panevino
We accidentally wet to Osteria (up the street) but were sent to their "sister" restaurant 2 blocks south. Lovely, delicious. All 4 diners loved their entres. Got us out in time to get to theatre without hassle.

This is so much better than
This is so much better than your garden-variety Italian restaurant. Wonderful atmosphere, and even better menu selections. The service was superb, and this was a Monday night! We ate outside, and enjoyed a very European dining experience of great food and wine and the best of San Diego nightlife in the Gaslamp Quarter. We'll definitely be back.

We all enjoyed our choices. This was an excellent restaurant. Bathe choices for their Restaurant Week offered a great representation of food preferences at a great value!

This restaurant was absolutely fabulous from the minute we walked in! We were a group of 7 and our table was extremely comfortable! Our waiter was excellent, informative and attentive! The food was to die for-everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals.. From filet migon to risotto to salmon to ravioli to gnocchi, etc! Don't miss out on this restaurant!!!!

I dined here with my boyfriend when he came to visit from Palm Springs. We were looking for a special little romantic place to enjoy a nice dinner. This place was perfect! We dined late, so there weren't too many people still there. The food was excellent! The server was a little distant, but he definitely didn't do anything wrong. The wine list was nice. The by the glass list could be longer. I am gluten free and they offered plenty of options for me! We really enjoyed it.

Awesome food, great spot
We went for my husband's birthday while traveling in San Diego. We arrived 15 mins late for our reservation, but they were very understanding and had held our outside patio table for 6 people---on a Saturday night/full restaurant.
Appetizers were great: bruschetta and carpaccio. I had the pasta special (spaghetti with seafood) and it was incredible. Service was very good as well. Will definitely return to this spot!

Wonderful Italian Restaurant
Wonderful Italian Restaurant right in the heart of San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter. My lobster ravioli and my wife's pollo toscano were both well prepared. We were able to get last minute reservations without a problem. As it turns out, we had dined at this same restaurant several years ago, but didn't recall the name until we entered. It was like coming back home!

Went during restraurant week
Had a wonderful outdoor table in the shade. The wait staff was charming but not overly attentive. The food was really wonderful. What made it exceptional was a guy playing guitar and singing in front of the restaurant. He was good and he covered some of my faves. Great weather, great music, great food. It was a wonderful dining experience. Although, if I were too go again and have the spinach ravioli, I might ask for half the sauce - it's destroying my diet!

Nice restaurant located in the busy gaslamp district. Everything we ordered was excellent and the prices weren't too bad. The wine list could have been a little better, but all in all a very good experience.

Oldie but goodie
My husband and I have dined at Panevino for quite a few years now (almost 10 to be exact.)
One of the best authentic Italian restaurants in downtown San Diego, right in the heart of the Gaslamp District. Even their servers speak Italian!
One of my only gripes is the lack of space! On busy nights it sometimes feels like you're sitting on top of the people next to you and can practically join in their conversation. Other than that, this is definitely go to spot for REAL authentic Italian.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
In the heart of Gaslamp District.
While attending a conference we used open table rather than concierge for dining. Reviews were reliable and food was excellent. Location was ideal. Great patio dining with excellent seafood and pasta specials. Service was excellent and did not feel rushed as we enjoyed sights and sounds of Gaslamp District.

It is one of my "go to" places when we come from out of town. I just LOVE it! the food is delicious, and the waiters are Italian, which adds to the ambiance.

REAL GOOD ITALIAN FOOD!
I'm from the East coast and we are known to have the best Italian food. Now I would have to say Panevino has the best Italian. I have been looking for a place like this! Ive been here acouple times and each time was wonderful. The service is always great and the food is always amazing. They have just started breakfast and it is the best! The breakfast pizza is my absolute favorite! They also offer bottomless mimosas!! Yes please!!! I will definitely keep coming back to this gem!
11/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were seated promptly, and service throughout the meal was attentive without being disruptive to good conversation. Tables were sufficiently spaced to allow conversations at adjacent tables to not be heard. Food was excellent ranging from ossobucco to sea bass. Nice presentation and food arrived at the same time. Great antipasto appetizer. Portions were quite large, and no attempt to up-sell. Cocktails were very good quality and wine list was informative for the non-oenophile.

Excellent, excellent Italian restaurant. Northern Italy influence. Very attentive and friendly waitstaff.
Waitress, a friendly and informative lady did a really nice job.
Both of our orders were cooked perfectly. Nice presentation. Even the bread was good which we ate too much of.
I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for great Italian food.
We will return to this spot when we return to San Diego.
