The food, cocktails and wine
The food, cocktails and wine selection were excellent— innovative and well executed. The server was great but the confused hesitant non-greeting at the door was a little off-putting. My husband and I ordered a number of small plates with the intention to share, but the beautifully arranged plates with the multiple flavors and textures make that really hard to do and it would have been useful if the server had warned us. Can't wait to check out the outdoor patio when the weather warms up.

My husband and I had a fabulous meal of four different plates plus dessert. Everything was inventive and delicious. The highlights were the black garlic papardelle with goat(!)and tiny Honshemeji mushrooms, the pork belly with yuzu, and the chocolate cake with bay leaf ice cream, caramel, dates and pretzel. The service was excellent - friendly and knowledgeable. The bar and dining rooms are beautiful and the glass-front kitchen was fun to watch. I'm sure the garden will be a great spot to dine in warm weather. We spend many weekends in the Berkshires and often drive to Hudson for dinner. I have not had food this amazing anywhere in the region. I can't wait to go back!

Amazingly presented plates
Amazingly presented plates with unusual combinations of flavors and textures.
Stunning/interesting decor that seems to "go with" the food! In-take at front door could be better....more welcoming.

Worth the trip
Very eclectic food. I loved most things, my wife not so much
I would definatly come again

Another incredible experience
Another incredible experience at the Crimson Sparrow -- the presentation is so beautiful, and the pairings of food so unusual and delicious. It was a little cold at first but they turned up the heat and it was fine.

The food was both inventive
The food was both inventive and delicious. We (my wife and I) started with drinks from the bar menu bar - interesting, well prepared and tasty (not shy on the pours). We then moved to our table and shared four small plates - with bread service. A little put off by having to pay for bread - although excellent - should have been included given the pricing on the food. The buratta with avo was perfectly flavored, fresh and very good. The chicken liver was outragious. It was nothing like we imagined - and was truly a special dish. The lamb loin was perfectly cooked and fantastic - the Masa Gnochi was divine (the mushroom flavors wonderfully punctuate). Only complaint would be that the dishes - were truly small. Made us shy away from desert

We had a wonderful brunch
We had a wonderful brunch at Crimson Sparrow this past Sunday.I loved the whole build your own plate concept, in which you can select 4 items from the list of about a dozen, to literally build your own plate. The food was delicious and I would recommend it.

Exceeded our expectations.
Exceeded our expectations. Very creative chef, knowledgeable staff, and relaxed atmosphere. Can't wait to go back.

This was surprisingly one
This was surprisingly one of the best culinary experiences I've ever experienced (and that's over 60 years of experience!) This small plate restaurant was a complete delight. Chef Ben's use of ingredients created little umami explosions.
If you are ever near Hudson NY, go find this special place.

Crimson Sparrow Soars
Staff are friendly and down to earth, yet professional. The restoration of the property is top notch - tasteful, rustically comfortable and inviting. It's a joy to be able to order several plates of varying size and so have a dining adventure. All dishes are ample and lushly presented and absolutely yummy, as were wine, dessert and coffee. We walked out sated, and soaringly happy with the entire experience. Some have pointed to priceyness, but the value is exceptional, and even factoring in having to pay for the sublime Bonfiglio bread, apples to apples, this restaurant compares favorably to all other of the better restaurants in Hudson, or anywhere else for that matter. We'll take that walk from the bottom to the top of town often.

Unusual Menu...Intriguing Combos
Small plates (not too small!), wild and different ingredients, friendly competent quick service. We got to view the kitchen throu a window while eating....great view. Casual ambience.

Excellent food, comfortable atmosphere, priced right. I'll definitely be back.

Welcome addition to Hudson
So glad that we have what SHOULD be a destination restaurant in Hudson. My husband and I are adventurous eaters who have eaten at many fine restaurants in NYC and across the country, and The Crimson Sparrow rates right among some of our many "best of" dining experiences. I know there are complaints about the prices, but we've often left the Sparrow and marveled at what such a meal would have cost us in NYC or Las Vegas and felt that we got a comparative bargain. The food is inventive, delicious, fresh and always beautifully prepared. Service is excellent and both the indoor and outdoor spaces are warm and beautifully done. A great deal of thought as gone into the space and the food, so please go! We need to keep the Sparrow in Hudson

I have been here twice for dinner and enjoyed it very much.last Sunday we did the brunch and earlier in the week enjoyed a drink at the bar.nothing but praise for them and plan on going again.

Not A Fluke
Loved it the first time and we returned with our daughter when it was appreciably more crowded on a holiday weekend. Food still terrific and fun and the service didn't miss a beat even with the crowd. Terrific local restaurant. Oh, we had steak, soft shell crabs, scallops and loin of lamb.
5/24/2013 4:00:00 PM
The perfect way to dine
I had duck as my main course and I would say it was the best I ever had, moist, flavorful and beautifully presented. My husband had Buffalo and he said it tasted like a filet. There was 4 of us at our table and each person raved about their dinner pick.
Eating outdoors in comfortable dining furniture's with simple but architectural planters/urns feast the eyes as well.
No noise ... all of us could carry a conversation and the tables were distant enough to give us privacy.

Great restaurant in Hudson
very imaginative food and cocktails. Fun to see the chef cooking through a huge glass window opening onto the courtyard. One of the best outdoor dining areas!
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
very nice ambiance and amazing food. the chef's and the bartenders work very well together to create great meal pairings
6/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
change for the better
excellent food. a constantly changing tasting menu at an outstanding price point. the wine pairings are great, and also a bargain. Friendly, helpful service. not what the restaurant was before, but everything is should be now

Unbelievably fantastic! This
Unbelievably fantastic! This tasting menu, paired with wines, was out of this world. Creative, perfectly balanced, every dish was a gem. And the wine pairings, which even included a sake, were outstanding. Although expensive, for what it is, it's a great value. This place is a must!

Napa in the Hudson Valley
Hudson NY is becoming a foodie destination similar to Napa and the style of the restaurants and the (primarily) local food reflect that. Having been to The CS earlier this year and being so impressed with the food and prices (four of us shared many small appetizers, mains, desserts and a couple of bottles of wine for what one would pay for two in many other places), we decided to go again for our anniversary. We were not let down. The menu is now changed to a set tasting menu (5 courses) for a mere $45. Add the wine pairing and that's another $25. You will find it hard to eat (and drink) better than $70 each. The menu changes daily (depending on what's in season and at hand) and it is all excellent. They will accommodate allergies.
7/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was an interesting meal. Beautiful space, very good service, and an interesting chef's menu. Some of the courses were good, others didn't quite meld in terms of the ambitious ingredients. For this geographic area, I think it is probably the most interesting, and one of the highest quality, restaurants you will find.

A Must-Visit Restaurant
The Crimson Sparrow is sophisticated, stylish and spacious and the food is extraordinary.
On a recent visit with friends, we had the tasting menu (all that was on offer that evening for dinner) and it was truly a culinary adventure. We also opted for the wine/drinks choices to accompany our menu which offered some very interesting combinations. The tasting menu combined flavors and textures that were surprising and delicious and every dish that arrived (there were four, not including the amuses bouches served before our meal and dessert) was better than the one that preceded it.
I highly recommend this beautiful restaurant.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Met some friends for dinner, it was their Sunday Tasting menu. Simply outstanding. The only criticism I have which is pretty small, when they offered dessert and we asked for a drink pairing, the chef recommended a Dragon's Blood Saki to go with the blueberry merangue tart, which was not palatable. Every fish/wine pairing up to that point was fantastic, to end on such a low note was quite disappointing. Was is enough to ruin our night? Not even close. Will we be back? Absolutely.
7/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
wonderful bday dinner
not only was their prix fixe meal priced reasonably, but the quality of the food was just exceptional. at some point in everyone's dinner we sat back and just gasped at how yummy things were. definitely going back again!

Great but Uneven
The first time we were there was sublime. Everything was magical. The 2nd time, on 8/2, the menu wasn't great though the execution was OK. I don't think the chef does as well with fish as he could, and the steak was too chewy. The time before we had the duck which was super excellent.
I want to see this place succeed and I think it can. They are very attentive to customer needs.

Spectacular, innovative food. Lovely setting. Enthusiastic staff. We were celebrating our 30th anniversary and everyone, from the chef to the servers, made us feel special.

UNEXPECTED TASTING MENU
Although we were surprised by a "tasting menu only" on friday nights policy, it turned out to be a gastronomic event, worthy of a 5 star restaurant. Only drawback was that one in our party is allergic to a variety of foods and the substitutions didn't rally do justice to what the chef was trying to do; other than that, a total thumbs UP! Foie gras with a creamy chocolate sauce? The best thing I've ever tasted in my entire life....and I'm pretty old!

I'm actually quite torn about
I'm actually quite torn about posting this review, as I would hate to have my future dinners and nights out at the Crimson Sparrow become defiled by hordes of shi-shi foodies and their wannabe brethren. The restaurant is truly a gem – intimate ambiance; nicely spaced tables; obliging and earnest (mostly very young) staff; and brave, creative, beautifully presented and largely hugely successful food paired with inventive and well-thought-out beverages. And it's a steal. Is it perfect? No, but it's pretty darn great. So please go and enjoy – but keep it to yourself!
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
The meal we had was one of the top five meals we've ever enjoyed. Each dish of the tasting menu was innovative, creative and a sublime "assault" on the palate.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fabulous dinner, inventive,
Fabulous dinner, inventive, fresh food with local ingredients without being too fussy or foamy. More dessert options would have been ideal but existing dessert was nice. Very nice wine list and responsive, well trained staff. Decor and building are stunning and the outdoor patio is beautiful. Well done on all fronts. Worth the trip to Hudson.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
We found the food creative and tasty, the staff warm and friendly, and the kitchen willing to accommodate special diets
We will certainly go back.

ALMOST TOP QUALITY
FOUR OF US LOVED THE FOOD. THE RESTAURANT IS PRETENTIOUS, WITH ITS ELABORATE PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION OF MINUTE PORTIONS OF EXCELLENT AND VARIED FOOD, BUT IT HAS HELPED BRING THE STANDARD OF HUDSON'S DINING TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. WE ALL LOOK FORWARD TO RETURNING. THE MUSIC IS NOT NEEDED! WE WERE PLACED TOO NEAR THE SPEAKERS AND THE SOUND COULDN'T BE TURNED DOWN, AN ANNOYANCE. OUR SERVICE WAS REFRESHINGLY CHEERFUL AND HELPFUL. OVERALL, A VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
My friends and I went here for brunch on Sunday. There was a menu of about 15 items and you could choose 4 for under $20. It was a great way to try a selection of their food... Which was wonderful! The food was very high end and well prepared. Each of the 4 items were small, so for a regular appetite it would leave you satisfied. If you have a hearty appetitie then it would not be enough to fill you up. We sat outside and could see the kitchen which was spotless. I'd love to try dinner here but unfortunately I cannot afford it. Their prices are certainly reasonable for a NYC budget.. But not for me on my Columbia County budget, lol. Overall this is a great place for foodies!

Worth the trip
About two hours away from New York City, The Crimson Sparrow is worth driving up the Taconic especially for New York foodies. Very pleasant dining room, great outdoor patio with a unique view of the large kitchen, The Crimson Sparrow offers local ingredients expertly mixed by the two Chefs. Creative, delicate, tasty courses are served by a friendly and attentive staff. A tasting menu worth every bites, every pennies. We recommend The Crimson Sparrow, book in advance!

My husband and I recently dined here because we were fans of WD50 and now live near Hudson. It was a great night. Cocktails at the bar were outstanding and the bartender was great, friendly and attentive. The tasting menu is 50 plus 30 for wine pairing. A great deal. The food served was top notch. Inventive, interesting and presented brilliantly. My only small complaint was the wine pairing. There was a sake in there somewhere and that was a disappointment to me. I get it, but it just didn't work. 2 small glasses of sake went to waste. No big deal though, the meal was exquisite and the waitstaff was professional and friendly. Can't wait to go back.

...patience and sweater required
Went for Sunday brunch, otherwise it's 'dinner-only'.. choose four selections from a list of a dozen or so choices. No question, the food is very tasty (we both agreed). What's not so great is the long wait for initial order taking, and a restaurant that by most standards (except those of busy servers) was very chilly. With drinks and coffee, bill was $65 w/o tip. At some point, we both said, we have to see what dinner there is like... TBC.

Five course Prix fixe
We had a lovely dinner in the courtyard. The five course's were very enjoyable and the service was attentive. The scallop with uni, chayote and orzo was one of our favorites. Save room for dessert you won't be sorry.

Ben Freemole (from WD50 in New York Ctiy) has opened this gem of a place in Hudson. It's a tasting menu that totally changes every two weeks.
It's only $50! With the wine pairing...an absolute must...add just another $30. Really incredible.
The finest quality of locally sourced and organic ingredients, brilliant wine list and a fantastic/knowledgeable staff that makes the whole thing effortless.
And grab a drink at the bar...Ian knows his stuff.
You. Must. Go.

brunch is brilliant!
As always, brunch at The Crimson Sparrow is inspired. Love the "pick four" concept, and the price is very fair at $16. Looking forward to a return visit.

This place was an unexpected and extremely satisfying find. Really creative innovative cuisine in a very cool setting with attentive but cool laid back service. We liked each course better than the last, and it was good fun to add the wine pairing to the tasting menu. My spouse is very picky about food and said that his salmon main course was one of the best fish dishes he has ever eaten. Overall, a great night of relaxed dining on exquisite food. It was a memorable meal.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
I have now been lucky enough to enjoy The Crimson Sparrow for both, dinner and brunch. I have enjoyed the food and staff on both occasions. This restaurant is definitely one of my favorites in the area, which includes Rhinebeck, Saugerties, and Woodstock.

Another Place in Hudson
Was in Hudson for a weekend and we were very happy with our meals. The wine paring option was very resaonabily priced and although not evey course or wine hit the mark, we enjoyed the whole experience and the attention to detail from the kitchen and the front of house staff. I would recommend it for any adventous eater.

NY City quality food and ambience.
NY City quality food and ambience. Excellent options and great service.

felt like we were on vacation
We enjoyed a fine dinner with the food as the main event, prix fix tasting menu of intriguing dishes -sometimes you won't even know what you're eating and you'll be fine with that- all delicious. We especially loved the little bonus of an amazing fish pudding resting in a pool of mushroom puree. Duck was also excellent. Wish there had been more of a selection for dessert (my husband's sole reason for living) only one dish with too many ingredients- it seemed confused. Still, stands out as a totally unique place in Hudson's growing restaurant world. We loved the ambiance and excellent service, attentive and informed without being overbearing. You never have to look for the waiter, they are magically there. Thank you CS, we'll be back.

Terrific all around!
Food amazing, presentation amazing, ambiance amazing, the green cocktail (forgot the name) amazing. I think you get the picture. GO!

Wonderful Sunday brunch
Our first time at Crimson Sparrow. The Sunday brunch was fantastic. You choose four items from a list of 16. I had frittata that was more like an egg custard - outstanding. With pork sausage, creamy cheese polenta, and mesclun salad. I have not had a chance to try dinner yet, but I will for sure.

Incredible tasting menu
We did the tasting menu and beverage pairing for our anniversary. There were 6 courses total, the first 5 were small plates and the last we chose between duck and fish (I got fish, hubby got duck). There was an option of an extra course add on for an extra 25 each, we chose to stick to the original menu, and do dessert instead. Every course was presented beautifully and the drink pairings were spot on. The food is all local and organic, of the highest quality. Every bite was an unbelievable combination of flavors. Many have said that this place would have a Michelin star if it were in NYC. I will have to agree. This was one of the best meals we've ever had. I definitely recommend going.
