Great wine, fabulous trout, superb terrine...a lovely meal in a beautiful setting with great wait staff.

Great for special occasions
Like taking a trip to Paris...excellent French food and wine at reasonable prices. We go there for birthdays, anniversaries and other special events

Superbly fresh French
Bistro Bordeaux embraces both modern flavor fusion and traditional French techniques, with emphasis on the latter (try the croque madame!). Prices are reasonable, the ambience is chill, and the service is outstanding. We make the drive to downtown Evanston (from Deerfield) several Mondays each summer for their prix fixe, 3-course Farmer's Market menu, which comes complete with wine pairings. (Pro tip -- Get on their email list to get the menu, which is different every week.) We also did Mother's Day brunch here, which was very elegant and made it a memorable occasion. If you've been to France, you'll know this place is authentic. It's high-level cuisine at moderate prices. Not to be missed!

Excellent French Bistro Atmosphere
We have been here several times and always have a great meal along with the surroundings that remind you of a true French Bistro in Paris. This time we went on a Tuesday evening. Tuesdays, you can bring your own bottle of wine and there is no "corkage" charge. I tried their "Fois Gras Terrine" and enjoyed it very much. For dinner, I had the Steak Frites and my wife had the Ribeye. Both were excellent. Our server was very attentive and helpful. We definitely will be returning.

We had a lovely meal and our server was fantastic. The prie fixe menu was a great option. The steak tartare was a very generous portion, the foie gras was perfect, the wine a great compliment to everything.

Affordable, authentic French dining
I really felt like I was in a French bistro. The softshell crab special was especially good (tempura-fried, beurre blanc sauce on bed of thinly sliced short ribs). I also really enjoyed the trout and the brioche pain perdue dessert. I tasted the steak frites -- bistro-perfect. Excellent and affordable French wine list. All in all a very enjoyable experience and an excellent value. The only quibble--I told them we were celebrating my sister's birthday and they didn't acknowledge the occasion or do anything special. (A birthday candle would have been nice, or a tiny little extra sweet thing.)

Nice place for a romantic dinner
We enjoy Bistro Bordeaux for special occasions. Their menu is small but they do offer options for most diners. There is always a vegetarian option as well as one or more seafood options. We especially appreciate that they provide fresh produce from local farmers when available. They did a fair job at modifying my dietary needs of no milk/cream in my meal but failed to honor my request of no leeks. Our server politely apologized when our salads were served before our appetizer. They graciously provided a complimentary desert with a candle for a birthday we were celebrating. Overall, we enjoyed a delicious meal in a lovely, relaxed setting...and will return for other special occasions!

Always a wonderful experience
We enjoyed a wonderful dinner with our two children for my husband's birthday this week. We've dined here several times and have always had a great dinner and lovely evening. Bistro Bordeaux continues to be our favorite French restaurant in the Chicago/Evanston area.
Excellent food and service in a welcoming dining room.

We always enjoy the authentic
We always enjoy the authentic French feel of this bistro. Pascal, the owner, is always gracious and welcoming. There was no valet service the night we were there, and since we were not familiar with downtown Evanston, he parked our car for us. The food, as always, was wonderful. We come all the way from downtown Chicago as often as we can.

French dining Experience in Evansto
Had an excellent Bouillabaisse that was quite respectable with those I have tasted in France. It was a quiet Monday night so the service and noise level was perfect. We enjoyed the Pouilly Fuisse and felt like we had had been in a little corner of Paris, other than no one spoke French. loved the bread and butter too.
8/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
We enjoyed the modern take on classic French recipes, such as mussels and Bouillabaisse, combined with a very nice selection of French wines. The service was prompt and attentive. We'll be back!

Nice. but a bit pricey
The place was almost empty at 12:20 PM on a Sunday. This is a small place with relatively small tables and decorated nicely. Outdoor tables were available but we chose to eat inside. Its Sunday Brunch menu was different than on their internet page. We were told by one waiter that there were some specials you could get only thru the internet, but our waitress told us that there were only e-mail specials if you signed up. Food was good, but pricey for what we got: $42 + tip for two of us with no alcohol.

Delightful dinner, trout still
Delightful dinner, trout still as well prepared as last visit

It's been a while since I wanted to go to Bistro Bordeaux, but for some reason I never took the time. When I saw them on Mystery Diners, I finally decided I should try it. I was not disappointed. I got the chicken liver mousse with Dijon mustard, which tasted like heaven. Then I got the trout with mashed potatoes. It was very tasty and delicious. I will definitely go there again!

Another Great Experience
We were again very pleased with our experience. The flank steak was perfectly prepared, and the truite sauvage was fantastic.

A Great Olace In Evanston
Always great food; I love the steak frites and the seasonal desserts are fantastic.
Wonderful choice of wines. It's good to have authentic French cuisine without having to travel into the city.

Great food! Fish, Pork Chop, Dessert excellent!! The service was wonderful and good suggestion for wine!!! I will go back!!

Food was luscious
My first time at restaurant and enjoyed the entire experience. The servers were also available. If possible order the steak tartare, it was so well seasoned. I had the 4 hour brined pork chop and it was succulent especially with the spaghetti squash pancake. My friend ordered a glass of wine that was sour and the host agreed and replaced with another until she found out to her liking.
Definitely going back.

back to Paris
Dinner at the Bistro transports one back to Paris (or what we envision Paris to be). It was a great dinner with a vibrant crowd and quite the European wine list. Enjoy your trip to France
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
We came here for brunch. The service here is outstanding. There were multiple people paying attention to our table. We thought the food was very good, but some of it was over-priced. I ordered the Lyonnaise salad, which turned out to be a single poached egg on top of a small portion of frisee lettuce with bacon. It was good, but not $9.00 good. My husband had the peaches and cream french toast, which was fantastic. Other people at our table had egg dishes or bagel with smoked salmon. The smoked salmon was probably the highest quality I've ever seen. That dish was worth the money. Overall, this is a lovely place to dine.
9/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our first time and we will be back to try a few different things. Basic bistro fare from steak frites to onion soup. The staff are very, very good and our server was so kind to allow us to have a slow paced meal. The owner Pascal takes time to great guests. The service alone makes us want to go back!
9/27/2013 5:00:00 PM
Very special small Bistro with exceptional food, service and ambiance. Worth every penny.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
I took my wife here for her birthday. The food was simply wonderful and the wine suggestions outstanding! The service was friendly, yet unobtrusive. While I would love to save this place for special ocassions, it really is too good to wait for those.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything about the evening
Everything about the evening was enjoyable, except the bothersome accordion music. Much too loud and disrupted our table conversation. I do not enjoy straining to listen and having to shout across the table to be heard. The other times we have visited this restaurant there was no live music - a more enjoyable experience.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
A friend and I ate here for the first time 2 weeks before and decided to try the brunch menu. The Oeuf Bénédictine and Oeuf Bénédictine Au Saumon were excellent. We wanted something sweet after the savory so decided to order Pain Perdu Aux Bananes & Praline to share and weren't happy. The Praline sauce was very heavy and thick, definitely not expected since dinner and other menu ideas were so flavorful. The server kept mimosa glasses filled.

Good restaurant, I'm going back
The staff was very friendly and the food very good. It's worth a trip just for the pain perdu!

I expected to be wowed, and
I expected to be wowed, and nearly was. The menu selections were not entirely to my taste and therefore had few options to pick from for the entree. The food was well prepared, well presented and the portions were appropriate to the price. I would go back. The restaurant is fairly small which lent itself to an intimate experience. Our waiter was very knowledgeable. The ambience was definitely European, with old black and white photos of the owner's family adorning much of the wall space. Desserts were "special" in a very good way.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
1st time here....
For this being my 1st time there I was blowrm away. Pascal the owner was kind enough to let move over so I could sit at the bar even though he was in the middle of a meeting. The food was phenomenoneal & I can't wait to go back & try more.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our group of 5 enjoyed a great dinner before a concert at the Nichols concert hall in Evanston. Everyone raved about the food and ambience. We will be back.

Bistro Bordeaux Hiddebn Gem
Our fist visit to this wonderful restaurant will definitely not be the last. The small, intimate space adds to the enjoyment, the service is excellent, the food is superb. Only complaint is that when crowded, the noise level is unpleasant.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
We love going to Bistro Bordeaux. It was my husband's birthday and we tend to celebrate special occasions there so this was another excuse to go! We really love the outstanding cuisine as well as the exceptional service. They treat us like family!

Always a winner! Service, menu choices and wine list provide diners with a great experience.

Great night out with a group
We took my daughter and a group of her friends to dinner. Although the restaurant was full, our waitperson was attentive and friendly, and the food was very good. I would definately go back.

A Bit of Paris in Evanston
You'll love the authentic French food here at Bordeaux Bistro. Our server was very knowledgeable about the wine list and food offerings. He was prompt, attentive without fawning, and personable. We had a lovely family meal, and there was something for everyone on the menu. Magnifique!
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
One Fine Meal
Had the brined pork chop... it was the best I can ever recall having, I'm thinking about taking another run up to this restaurant in the next week or so to order another.

A Great French Experience
I am currently a student taking French as my language course and has a project due that required me to either prepare a French meal, watch a French movie or dine at a French restaurant. I obviously choose the latter. Bistro Bordeaux was excellent from the ambiance and the food to the servers with their knowledge of everything on the menu and willingness to help me by answering the million and one questions I had. I loved it!
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were visiting Evanston and decided to try this interesting restaurant. This small bistro is full of character from the moment you enter. The service was excellent providing advice on the menu items and on the nice selection of French wines. Several wines are available by the glass, and there are interesting beers also. The onion soup was as good as we have had. Braised lamb shanks, grilled steak, mussels, and the seafood in a wonderful broth were all excellent. Prices were very reasonable, and we will certainly go back again.

A first-rate dining experience
We happened on Bistro Bordeaux because we could not secure a reservation at a another restaurant we intended to go to on Saturday evening. How fortunate we were. The cuisine is outstanding, the service gracious and well-paced, the atmosphere lovely and relaxing. We enjoyed everything we ordered--each dish looked beautiful and tasted equally so. The wine list is biased toward French wines, which is appropriate for a French bistro. The waiter was kind enough to permit us to taste several wines before making a selection. We enjoyed the wine, though we much prefer California, Oregon, Australian, and New Zealand wines to the three French wines we tasted. We would definitely return--we had a top-notch experience at Bistro Bordeaux!

We were seated quickly and
We were seated quickly and the great service commenced. The appetizers were very good. We ordered 4 different meals and each had a taste of the other 3. The 2 steak entrees could have included a better trimmed piece of meat. The preparation was very good and accurate (Medium and Medium Rare). We did not have dessert, but the selections were tempting. Finally, the wine list was pretty extensive.

I was there on a Tuesday night
I was there on a Tuesday night when they have oysters at a buck a piece. Devine! And the morsel of foie gras was amazing. It was a cold night and the oyster were too but the toast with the foie was hot. I wish I lived closer for another Tuesday or ten

A wonderful Bistro experience
It felt like Paris. Our dinner was excellent and the service very good. The beet salad was delicious, and the moules frites (mussels with french fries) were perfectly prepared. I couldn't stop munching on the perfect frites. For dessert we tried the Ile Flottange (floating island) which was a delight --- soft meringues that tasted like marshmallows in a caramel flavored souplike sauce. Yum.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
We had a wonderful dinner at Bistro Bordeaux. The food was perfect and the staff could not have been more accommodating. Our server made two wine suggestions based on a description of the type of wine we wanted and he brought us a taste of each. Both were perfect. Our meal was delicious too. From the hostess to the owner to our server, we could not have been treated better. The restaurant was full and lively.

Le Bon Bistro
We have dined at Bistro Bordeaux several times, and the most recent visit with another couple was one of the best experiences. Starting with a large choce of aperitifs (Dubonnet Rouge is an old favorite), the French wine selecton is not overwhelming, but with more than enough varieties. vintages and prices to suit anyone. The classic items including foie gras, steak tartare, escargots, and onion soup are there as well as charcuterie and cheeses, as well as unexpected ideas. Entrees including Amish chicken, lamb shank, steak and croque madame. Everyone raved! The service was excellent and the setting romantic (if desired!) Will continue to make repeat appearances!
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Very attentive service
Everything was good about our experience, but I think the service was exceptional. It wasn't ultra-fine-dining level where both entrees touch the table at the same time (nor was our bill $600), but every bit as good on practical matters. Our waiter was very knowledgable, attentive, and accommodating. He was there whenever we needed something, checked w/ us after the first couple of bites of each course (neither before we started or, as is sadly sometimes the case, when we only had a couple of bites left), and otherwise stayed out of our way. Pacing was perfect (kudos to kitchen as well for that). The menu is interesting, varied, and the food was well prepared and flavorful. All and all a delightful experience.

Wonderful as Always
My husband and I eat here frequently. The food, service and ambience never fail to please!
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
We had a very nice meal here. The atmosphere is cozy with just enough activity but not too noisy. Nice French wine list - good variety and the server knew it well so had suggestions. Classic French bistro menu but with enough variety to provide interesting choices. Most of what we ordered - a wide selection - was very well prepared and tasty. Escargots so-so. Beet salad and lamb shank was superb. Our server was great but service was a little slow - seemed like he had too many tables. We didn't really care as we had a long evening with lots of wine and plenty of time. All in all, I would recommend this restaurant. Made for a nice evening.

Henri and his staff are delightful and efficient. Food is terrific. Even the silverware is substantial.

Excellent French Cafe
I have been here many times; with my wife, my kids (grown), with friends. It is reliable bistro fare with a unique flare. Farm to table conscious chef Michael Gottlieb ads creative takes on traditional dishes. Excellent sweetbreads. Crisp on the outside, tender and delicious. Ribeye cooked suvee with puréed cauliflower. Flavorful savory and not overseasoned; cooked exactly as ordered. Skate wing: large tender portion. For dessert, the Pain Perdu au Calvados is a MUST! Sweet fried brioche (soaked in egg - like French bread), with ice cream, calvados & vanilla bean caramel! Good selection of wines and knowledgable servers. Oh yes... Great fresh oysters from east and west coast. We had 2 dozen for the table. Every one was plump and delicious.

Attention to detail...
This small place is almost unique, in my experience. They serve authentic French recipes, but with just the right amount of creativity. BB was more traditional when it opened, and I'm glad to see it branch out from the classics and become more adventurous. The food is impeccably prepared and the service is attentive but not overbearing or stuffy. The wine list is all-French, reasonably priced, and interesting. Simply an outstanding cozy little restaurant that focuses on all the right things.
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
Bistro Bordeaux not only had an excellent ambiance, albeit a little bit cramped, it had excellent food as well. I'm not entirely sure the portions of the food justified the high price but regardless of the price, I had the great pleasure of sampling many of the dishes, including those that some of my friends had ordered. From the steak to the mussels to the lamb to the brioche, everything was outstanding, full of unique tastes. The chefs really used garnishes and sauces really effectively. My friend even teared up when he first tasted the steak! The one qualm I have with Bistro Bordeaux's food are the fries. Though they were good fries, I would expect better side dishes from this kind of price. But overall, the food was excellent.
