A Wonderful Find In State College
The Carnegie House Restaurant has a very nice tradition of offering a cocktail and Hors d'oeuvre in their library when you first arrive. You can sit back in deep cushions, relax, sip your drink, converse, and enjoy a roaring fire in the fireplace. On some nights there's a pianist at the keyboard. Also, while comfortably seated you have a chance to view the menu and place your order. Once the first course is ready to be served you are ushered to your table in the dining room. (I imagine that this is what it's like to be rich!) The food is somewhere between very good and outstanding. I'm a bit of a food snob, but while I've had meals that are more refined and complex in "big city" restaurants, we loved every bite of every course.

Beautiful and cozy, perfect
Beautiful and cozy, perfect environment. We will definitely go back for the great service and good food.

Perfection at last
What a wonderful dining experience. Relaxing in the library with cocktails until our food order was ready to be served is unique. One of the best Cosmopolitans I've ever had, by the way. Service was elegant and totally unobtrusive. The lobster bisque had big chunks of meat and was silky smooth. Rack of lamb & Sea bass were both perfectly prepared. I'm looking forward to returning again and again!

Our Carnegie night
We hadn't been to the Carnegie House in more than a decade and so it was great when we received a gift card from a friend. We couldn't wait to use it. We were not disappointed. Everything was fine. Well, almost. The portions were so big that we had to skip dessert. :-)

Very nice luncheon
Our luncheon was the start of a graduation weekend, with multi-generation family gathering. We had a wonderful table awaiting our group, beautiful flowers on the table, gracious waitstaff, and the menu offering a nice variety of delicious items for everyone's taste. The noise level in the dining was very low; we were able to have conversations that everyone was able to hear. We plan to come back again soon.

Expensive but worth it!
My wife and I try to have dinner here at least once every time we are in town. I would say it is hands down the most elegant restaurant in the State College area. The food is great and artfully presented and the servers are friendly and skilled in the art of service. An extensive wine list is fairly priced. On arriving one is seated in a lovely library with a fireplace and upholstered chairs chairs and couches for cocktails and for ordering dinner. Once dinner is ready you are seated in the dinning room. Expensive but worth it.

Perfect, all the way around!
We went to the Carnegie House for our 5th anniversary and loved every second of it. From cocktails by the fire to our amazing 4 course dinner, we were beyond pleased.

Impress your date
If you have the money, this is the classiest dining experience in state college. I wanted to treat my wife to an excellent dinner and the Carnegie house did not disappoint me or her. I mean if it is good enough for Janet Jackson, it has to be top notch. I loved it. The Chilean sea bass was incredible. I wish I could afford to eat there more often.

Classy and relaxing
The entire Carnegie House restaurant experience is first class and utterly relaxing. Upon arrival, you are ushered into the library for cocktails and to peruse the menu. It was a cool evening when we were there, and the fireplace gave off some welcome warmth. While sipping our cocktails, a small appetizer arrived from the chef. We were seated when our salads were ready to be served. There is plenty of space between tables and the view of the golf course and cascading wisteria on the pergola give the Carnegie House restaurant an elegant and refined feel. The prices are a bit steep, but the overall experience is exceptional.

A little pricey, but well
A little pricey, but well worth it. Food is excellent and the atmosphere is very relaxing.

Amazing experience/Fantastic food
Everything was perfect. Love the fact that you relax in the library over drinks and place your order. Then once the first course is ready you are escorted to your table and your food is promptly brought out. The lobster bisque was to die for. All of our entrees were exceptional. You weren't rush thru your meal. And the cappuccino and desert or glass of single malt scotch was the perfect end to a perfect evening. Loved it so much a booked a suite and dinner package for later this summer immediately after dinner! Can't wait to come back.

Carnegie House review
Impeccable service, great food, extensive wine list. Worth the price. Lamb lollies were great as was the lobster bisque. Bisque was much better than the version served at the Nittany Lion Inn. We'll be back.

My wife and I loved the relaxed
My wife and I loved the relaxed and wonderful dining experience. We have dined here a few times before and we are never disappointed. It was a second time for our anniversary and the food choices were fantastic both times. The seafood selections were our favorites and they were made just right and were very delicious! The wine list was first class.I also had long stemmed roses delivered in a large vase and it was on the table with plenty of room ti spare with our setting when seated. The whole experience and ambiance was wonderful. I highly recommend this establishment for all ocassions!

Elegant night out
Elegant experience- wine and hors devours in the parlor before moving to our table. The cream of celery soup was fabulous- would return just for that (how often can you say that about celery soup?)! Service was well paced and friendly. Grits were a bit dry, but everything else was tasty. Look forward to returning.

Great food, exceptional service,
Great food, exceptional service, and unique European seating in a separate comfortable room to enjoy drinks before food was ready to be served

Very enjoyable dinner
We enjoyed the evening very much. It was nice to start with wine in the library with a fine view of the outdoors. Going into the dining room when the meal was ready added to the evening's enjoyment. The food was excellent. We will return.

Almost a Neighborhood Gem
We chose Carnegie House to celebrate a milestone birthday. We were welcomed warmly and ushered into a sitting room for wine and a complimentary chef's creation appetizer....which was delicious. We sipped our wine and enjoyed the gorgeous view out the window onto the Inn's lush gardens and the server came by to take our meal order. When our starters were ready, we were escorted to the dining room and our first course was served immediately. The Apple & Brie Salad was especially tasty, but the soup du jour (Tomato Basil) was disappointing. The portion sizes were shockingly small given the prices. For our main entrees, we selected Bacon Wrapped Diver Scallops and Veal Marsala. Both were very good, but we expected more for the prices.

Great find in State College
Not an extensive menu, but all choices top notch. Have to mention black cherry amaretto gelato for desert, made on premise! Truly the best ever!

First visit to the Carnegie House will hopefully not be last. The pre-dinner seating in the many sitting rooms was so casual yet elegant; brings to mind an old-fashioned "salon." You're shown to your table only once the first course is ready, which made the dining experience feel more like a private dinner party than a restaurant seating.
The lobster bisque, lamb, and veal were excellent. I was particularly impressed with the variety in the accompaniments. I was delighted to see romanesco being served and found the garlic mashed potatoes, truffle polenta and Parmesan grits that all came with different dishes delicious and excellent touches tailored to fit the main.
Definitely a perfect special occasion restaurant!

High quality experience
Visited mid-week on a quiet night with few customers, the head chef prepared all our courses. Every selection was excellent and the service and presentations were outstanding from drinks and ordering dinner while sitting in the lounge to the final dessert course in the dining room. Could not have been better.

Attentive and cordial, but not obtrusive wait staff. Leisurely dining. Experience began in well appointed library with drinks, ordering from the menu, and hors d' oeuvre from the chef. Because we were celebrating our anniversary, I requested a private table with a view; they honored my request. Several breads from the best, local bakery were on the table along with butter and olive oil. Chicken piccata and Squid Ink Linguine were very good. I ordered mango-ginger sorbet which was very tasty. The presentation was a spectacular surprise! Without our knowledge, the dish was served on a white plate with Happy Anniversary written in chocolate along the outer rim of the plate and red and white hearts cascading down next to the sorbet!

Celebrated our aniversary and it was memorable. Relaxing before the dinner in a living room atmosphere and then being shown to the table is a grat feature that we love. Food was very good and well prepared. Wine was outstanding ans presented and served very nicely. Service was first rate. We will be back before the next anniversary....

Top of Class at State College
We have been staying at The Carnegie Inn for several years and although we sometimes like to find other restaurants in the area, their restaurant continues to be the top of the class in this region. The ambiance is terrific with sitting down in their library and ordering prior to being seated..very classic and makes for a nice relaxed evening. The convenience of lighted menus as wells shows the thoughtfulness of the establishment. A wide mix of food choices...but always enjoy the Tuna Carpaccio for appetizers. Salads are always fresh and plentiful. Entrees have included some great duck, amazing Chilean Sea Bass and a nice selection of beef. Of course, they have a great wine list as well. Servers also add to the great experience.

State College Gem
We were tremendously impressed with being escorted to a lounge area before being seated in the dining area. We were served drinks as we sat comfortably in a corner area, perusing the thoughtfully illuminated menu! (The led backlighting on the menu was especially impressive!) Our server took our food order after we had sufficient time to absorb the offerings, and then we were served an appetizer "on the house". When a hostess came a little later, to let us know that our soup was being served, she escorted us to our table.
The Lobster bisque was the best I have ever had. Hearty, and flavorful come to mind. I could taste the sherry that had been added, but in a good way, enhanced the flavor. Chilean Sea Bass was best I ever had, as well!

Excellent and elegant
Our dining experience began with drinks and complimentary appetizers in a separate area. We were presented with menus and enjoyed our wine before ordering. When our first course was served we were led into a small dining room which was full yet felt uncrowded. Every bit of our meal was delicious…I had the Chilean Sea Bass and it was the best I have ever eaten! My husband and two sons had filet mignon and lamb and all were prepared perfectly. It was pricey but an excellent choice for a fine meal or special occasion. We will be back!

My wife and I have been celebrating
My wife and I have been celebrating our wedding anniversary at Carnegie House for a number of years. It has always been good but it has noticeably improved in the last several years. We will be looking forward to returning in 2014.

exceeding our expectations
We heard mixed reviews before we went about the slow service, but were delighted to be able to take our time...
in and out in 90 minutes isn't slow when we went to relax for our 25th anniversary. Loved sitting in the library before dinner and could've stayed there longer.

Elegance Enclave in State College
What a pleasant surprise to find this oasis of civility and good taste in a town where dining establishments are not generally associated with such concepts. The experience and the food were both delightful, yet the Manhattan-level prices seemed a bit out of place in the Toftrees setting. Service was exceptional both during cocktails in the library and dinner in the dining room, although the small size and acoustics in the dining room made it nearly impossible to enjoy a private conversation. All in all, a wonderful and relaxing alternative to the standard diner/fast food experience at the establishments downtown...but at a price, of course!

Evening started with Wine in the library. Very nice surroundings. But noisy with other groups nearby. Meal was very tasty. I would visit again to try other dishes. The dining room holds 35-40 diners. Again it was very noisy. If you want to have quiet, private conservations this is not the place to dine.
