food + staff = almost perfect
Debra, Rob, Nikole, Shannon...these are just a few of the people that make going to Waban Kitchen a treat. Of course, the food is imaginative, creative, and makes dining an experience you look forward to with anticipation (oh, those deviled eggs!). But without a welcoming staff, who are genuinely glad to see you, and make your time with them memorable--well, even the best cuisine in the world would not bring you back.

Awesome food and experience
Besides the fabulous food, our party of six recieved a royal treatment.
Lamb was the best lamb I've ever had. Make sure to save room for the pies. The service was outstanding.
We had such a great time we closed the restaurant.

Went with a group of 5. This place is a bit small, so given how many people were already there they could only fit us at an outside table. Normally that's fine but this happened to be during the heat wave this summer so it was like 95 and humid. The food was awesome and they went out of their way to offer us a spot inside as soon as room became available. It's something they didn't have to do but the staff was looking out for us (I imagine our waitress didn't want to walk outside anymore either :) )

Gets better every visit
This is about my 6th visit to Waban Kitchen since they opened last October. We have had different dishes each visit (their menu changes regularly) and each one is more excellent than the last. The servers & hostess are just about the friendliest ladies around. Only complaint is it's hard to save room for the delicious pies... Keep up the good work!

This was my first time at Waban Kitchen. The service was very good. The space is inviting and bistro-like. Noise level is acceptbale. We shared a flatbread appetized that was very tasty and fresh. We both had the Lamb Porterhouse and it was succulent. Desserts were also very good. It also had a prix fixe menu that looked very interesting as well and reasonably priced. OVerall a really good restaurant with an innovative menu, good service and nice atmosphere. The only negative is that tables are a little close to each other.

All good! Tables are a little close together but it actually adds to the neighborhood vibe. Loved it.

We'll Be Back To Waban Kitchen
This was our first time to Waban Kitchen and we were very happy. We were warmly greeted and waited a few minutes while our table was set up. During this time, two seats opened up at the bar and we opted for those. Our server at the bar was attentive and helpful. We had two glasses of Prosecco to celebrate the publication of Michael's first book, Then we shared an order of the grilled mushrooms, which were nicely flavored with garlic. While we were waiting, we were treated to some honey tabasco popcorn, I had the special sea bass. It was delicious. We also had the lemon meringue pie for dessert. Overall we really liked the atmosphere as well as our bar buddies, fellow diners Ben and Valerie. We would enjoy coming back soon.

great new neighborhood spot
We ate outside, always a treat, at this great new "neighborhood gem", Had a wonderful night only slightly spoiled by not having the best server, the one on the other side who came over several times to pitch in was another gem.

Escape to Vermont in Newton Center
Honest, farm fresh flavors sophistcatedly combined for full visual effect .Thoughtful wine and beer list. The few wall ornaments lend to the contemporary yet rural appeal in this clean bright space. Be sure to sneak out back to their little garden area : delightful!!

Post-Movie Dinner in Waban Square
Waban Kitchen is a fine local spot, with a professional staff, good bar and generally very good food. After great house spicy Margaritas (with a real jalapeno kick), our party shared an excellent appetizer of fried calamari with a pepper relish, I took a leap of faith and ordered the barbeque pulled pork. I smoke pork myself at home and have eaten it at barbeque joints around the country. This pulled pork was accompanied by a choice of sauces (the kitchen let us order all three) and they were okay, but the pork itself lacked the flavor one would normally expect from a long smoking process, a decent spice rub and a sauce mop. Waban Kitchen is a solid neighborhood restaurant with potential.

Hit the spot
Great beer selection.
Crusted eggplant special was very nice.
Pulled pork was delicious. Came with a choice of sauces (Kentucky, NC, or SC). I should have asked to try them all! (I chose Kentucky).
Best peanut butter mousse pie I've ever had.

Terrific Summer Spot
The salad was great and enough to share. One of us had the bass and the other swordfish. The bass was perfection with really nice presentation on steak fries and veggie. The swordfish portion was a bit small but very good ... maybe a little more with the sides and bit warmer. We really enjoyed the wine recommended by the waitperson. On a summer evening, this was a lovely place to dine.

This restaurant is close yo
This restaurant is close yo where we live. Walking distance. The good is amazing. And one of the best meals we've ever had. The only negative was that it was my birthday and this fact was completely forgotten although it was mentioned more than once
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our group of four were very happy with our dinner here. The sea bass was succulent with a great sauce; the chicken and salmon dinners also delicious. It was less crowded than I recall from our last visit when the food was also wonderful. They were willing to seat us at the table we wanted and were very solicitous of our needs. Would definitely return!

Great food, tiny space
Waban Kitchen is friendly, warm, inviting, and innovative. Its intimate ambience invites you to talk to your table neighbors, which enables you to give and get on-the-spot reviews of the food that night. My scallops were nicely seared, my dinner companion's swordfish was excellent but the rice accompaniment was bland. The person at the table next to me told me her shrimp special appetizer was tasty but much less spicy than she had anticipated. At one point in the evening, waiters were simultaneously working the table to our right and left with the result that my dinner companion was squeezed between the two. Did I tell you the place is tiny? But the food is absolutely worth it.

This restaurant is consistently excellent. The food is delicious and innovative and the wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The pickled meatballs small plate was outstanding, as was the homemade peach cheesecake and bluberry cheesecake ice cream flavors.

The menu is always changing, the specials are always special, and the recommendations from Robb the bar manager are SPOT ON!

Finally gave it a try...
Although Waban Kitchen is right around corner, we have avoided it because predecessor was so disappointing. Pleasantly surprised. Physical layout is vastly improved with bar seating option & outdoor tables. Classy, tasteful in decor. Service was attentive without being pushy.
Cocktails did not quite live up to description. Appetizers were delicious--calamari & the charcuterie du jour which was a delectable duck liver pâté! More than enough to share. We were looking forward to the lamb chops, but next table got the last. We were pleasantly surprised by five spice chicken but fettuccine & day boat scallops were just okay. As per others, chef a little heavy handed with salt.
Owner offered 2 tastings as anniversary treat. Nice evening.

Everyone participated to our dining experience, friendly server, great bartender, very personable manager and delicious food. Will definitely come back and told our friends to try it too.
9/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had a wonderful meal. The small size of the dining room and the high quality of the food means that reservations are hard to come by. Either make a reservation well in advance or plan to eat either very early or very late. We shared the appetizer special - ragout of sausage and sweet potato in a pastry with a maple glaze - and it was amazingly good. The complimentary bread was warm and had a wonderful olive oil flavor, served with a basil pesto. My husband had the pulled pork which was served with corn on the cob with seasonings and cheese. I had the roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. The dry rub on the chicken was flavorful and had a hint of cinnamon. My husband was very pleased with the extensive bottled beer list.

The duck, spicy shrimp and
The duck, spicy shrimp and mushroom pasta were all excellent. The main negative is they have crammed in too many tables for two for comfortable seating. They may have no choice given the relatively small space they have to work with.

First Time Charm
Went because the menu represented a variety my kids would like and foodie enough for my wife and I. Intended on getting all appetizers/small dishes, but found a duck special on the main course that was literally out of this world - never tasted duck so good in my life and I have duck out at lots of restaurants. Waban Kitchen is definitely a keeper! We'll be going back.

I love Waban Kitchen, have been there several times and I consider myself lucky that it's in my neighborhood. Great food, really nice bartenders and staff, great ambience - everyone having a good time just as if we were in someone's very large kitchen.....

great apps and pasta
tried 2 pies which were so not up to my standards, crust awful and filling tasted like it came from a jar (spiced peach)
meringue was good but almost gluey
definately go back......sat at the bar and the attention was great

Go and you will be very happy
We had a delightful meal (our second) at Waban Kitchen this weekend. The pappardelle was fabulous (a split appetizer portion was sufficient), the sliced steak special was also fabulous. They were nice enough to substitute an additional vegetable for the starch without any fuss. The chicken had an unusual spice/herb, not to our taste, but that's just individual. Service was nothing short of outstanding (and highly personable without the slightest intrusion). Next time (and there definitely will be a next time) I would ask for very light salt. One thought: the drinks are skimpy and a little weak, but priced below average. I'd raise the price and be more generous.

The food was delicious, but was served too quickly. It's a tiny place, and you knew they wanted you in and of quickly. I would o my recommend this place for during the week when it should be less crowded.

Stumbled upon a gem
Our first visit won't be our last. Great atmosphere with a relaxed and welcoming staff. It's a small place where locals choose to eat at the bar. We ate at one of perhaps a dozen tables.
We ordered a bottle of Rioja from a smallish wine list that was reasonably priced, featuring smaller production wines than the typical suburban restaurant wine list. My wife eats mostly vegetarian, and the menu was a little lean for those folks. Nevertheless, she found a mushroom paperdelle that was nicely prepared, and I a delicious pumpkin wedge with bacon and cheese. I had a truly excellent duck breast for my main course, while she had a cheese plate which was nothing to write home about. We would be regulars if we lived in Newton.

My favorite local
Waban Kitchen has a simple, yet excellent menu with super wine choices. It is a real treat to sit at the bar and enjoy conversation with neighbors and bar staff.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food but loud and crowded
The food was wonderful , however it boarders on communial dinning, the seats are so close together you need to slide the table to get out, even then you are offending the people next to you if they are eating. Great place if you are not looking to have a private conversation at dinner. A plus for food quality , C for ambiance and seating.

Went for our anniversary. Sevice was excellent. Staff very friendly. Braised Beef Short Rib was outstanding. Crimini Papparadelle, Wild Mushrooms appetizer was memorable. Would work easily as an entree. Yam Pie made a yummy dessert. One of our favorite restaurants.

great meal 2nd time !
We were a group of 5 who had a table placed perfectly between the bar and the window - made us feel we were separate yet part of the scene. Food & wine were fantastic - tasty, creative, beautifully prepared and served by attentive and knowledgable wait staff. No feeling of being rushed ... was a lovely evening out - would recommend without hesitation!

Great food, good for early bite
My wife and I were finally able to get into Waban Kitchen for an early dinner. It has been open for about a year, and replaced Kouzina. Waban Kitchen seems to be quite popular, and has not had openings when we called in the past. We were the first dinner customers two nights ago; I had the prix fixe menu, which included a great salad with wine poached pear, bacon lardons, and some sort of chevre based dressing; it was followed by a simply exquisite beef short ribs dish, centered among small onions, potatoes and other delicacies. The final course was a great sweet potato pie which I shared with my wife. My wife had her own salad, which I finished, and perfectly prepared Salmon. Starting this week, Waban Kitchen opens for lunch too.

Had to return!
I had heard about this hidden gem from friends. Had dinner at the bar area on a Saturday night. Fantastic. Bartender Emmet and Host Michael are the best. Had a friend visiting a couple of days later and just had to return to Waban Grill!

Wanted to be impressed
I really liked the neighbourhood bistro feel of this place. The waitstaff was attentive and pleasant. I'm a big fan of small plates, so expected to be thrilled with the variety of fun mixes. The food sounded more interesting than it actually tasted. The small cheese plate had only 1(!) rather traditional, brie-like cheese on it. The dipping pesto for the bread was a hit at our table. The Red Oak salad was also nice and fresh but a bit boring. The Edamame was good. I'd give it another try, because it seems to have so much potential.

Wonderful Food, Wonderful Service!
My husband and I took my mother here for her birthday, and it was a wonderful experience in every way. The food is excellent - creative takes on American favorites, with seasonal fare incorporated into the menu in a fun and impressive fashion. We shared two small plates, and then ordered appetizers and an entree each. Everything was great, from the salads and soup to the salmon and braised short ribs. In fact, this ranks as one of our most memorable meals in the Boston area. The drinks were top notch, and also creative and with substance. The service was outstanding! The wait staff was attentive and engaging - we did not have to wait for much of anything, they were on top of it! We will definitely be back!

Symphony of flavor!
We had a great dining experience at Waban Kitchen.
The flavor of the fish and the vegetables melded beautifully.
Seasonal vegetables and textures formed a layered taste experience.

Excellent Neighborhood Restaurant
The small neighborhood restaurant made you feel welcome once you entered the front door. They took our coats and seated us promptly. The service was one of the best in greater Boston. The food was excellent. We all tried different small plates, shared a medium plate and had a large plate for entree. The bread and pesto was delicious. The calamari was lightly battered and was great appetizer. I had the duck. It was crispy and tender. We will definitely go back.

Urban Style & Tastes in the 'burbs
Waban Kitchen is a very welcomed addition to the spotty Suburban restaurant scene. This small but cozy spot has a wonderfully innovative and creative menu without being over the top or unapproachable. We enjoyed one of the best fried calamari appetizers ever and even the steamed edamame was out of the ordinary. Our party loved the duck breast, amazing short rib special and a perfectly cooked flank steak. We were even treated to a lovely fried mac n cheese amuse-bouche compliments of the house and sinfully rich chocolate ice cream in honor of our son's birthday.
