Very good restaurant on Harvard
Very good restaurant on Harvard Square. We enjoyed brunch; our server was engaging and knowledgable. We recommend this and will likely go back.

Food was great, service was excellent. A really nice restaurant with a great atmosphere. I would go back and bring friends. A good place to bring out of town bests. Menu was a little limited and heavy on the seafood, especially shellfish, but what we ordered was very tasty. We didn't leave hungry.

Great place, nice staff-service was a little slow but overall decent. I would go back.

Great fried oysters. Jambalaya was notable as well. The bartender offers some fine cocktails.

The tool isn't letting me rate the service or the ambience the way I'd like to; I'd give them both outstandings, but this website isn't letting me click on those for some reason.

I made reservations at First
I made reservations at First Printer because I'm a former newspaper journalist, love history, and was on a weekend visit to the Harvard Square area. Before making my decision, I read numerous online reviews, most either very good or very bad, with the latter often noting "terrible" service. I decided to find out for myself and was not at all disappointed. In fact, I considered First Printer an excellent choice. Their mixed drink menu was fun and potent, the meals were not sensational but were very satisfying, the prices were reasonable for the location, and the host and wait staff were exceedingly pleasant and responsive. My date and I enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and left with not a single complaint.

We went for Sunday brunch. The food was great as was the music, but the music was so loud that we were unable to talk during lunch.

Great for holidays!
We decided to eat out on Easter rather than following the family tradition of cooking at home. Brunch and music at First Printer were awesome. We had a great meal and enjoyed the entertainment. What made it especially fun was all the other folks there having as good a time as we were.

Good food, Wait staff too attentive
Overall, a good dining spot to have some really good southern food.
Our entrees came out too soon, as we were still enjoying our appetizers when the plates were served.
Our waiter was too attentive for us, catching us mid-bite seemingly every 5 min to ask how everything was.
But again, the food shone through all of that.

I went for brunch and really enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. The staff was very friendly and outgoing. I love the decor and the big windows letting in lots of natural light. Great location in the center of Harvard Sq. I loved First Printer and would definitely go again!

Accommodated our request to sit at a table in the former bank vault and prepped a specially plated dessert for our birthday guest. (Only downside to sitting in the vault is that it gets warm before long.)
As usual, good dinner and cocktail selections, with the scallops as a creamy highlight.

First Printer is definitely
First Printer is definitely one of the best places in Harvard Square. We are obsessed with the Sunday jazz brunch! The black and blue (berries) parfait is so simple but really delicious, refreshing, and surprisingly filling. My fiancé had the bourbon fresh toast the first time we tried the brunch and he swears it is he best he has ever had and will not order anything else. We have also had lunch and dinner there quite a few times and you just can't go wrong! Everything is good, the cocktails are delicious, the staff is very friendly, the owner is visible and hands-on, and it is overall just a lovely little place that we will continue to enjoy!

I had the Melt Burger ...
... on toasted rye. Perfect and I do not say this often or lightly. The shallot jam was wonderful.

Mother's Day Brunch
I had read plenty of negative reviews and I am happy to report we had a wonderful experience. We ended up arriving 15 minutes late due to traffic and our booth was held, with the hostess and waitress very welcoming. The drinks and food were great. We were impressed with the layout and the 4 piece jazz band played great standards and were very energetic. If I had one critique it would be that the band should turn down the amplifier's a notch or two as they should compliment the setting, not override it.
That said, I look forward to returning to First Printer and try them for either lunch or dinner.

Unexpectedly Good Experience
This was a quick decision on Open Table's suggestion since when I looked at the menu, I saw one-dollar oysters so I booked a reservations. This turned out to be such a great experience with the ambiance as well as the oysters and the rest of the food. Strongly recommended.

My GOD it was AMAZING. The flatbread pizza was the BEE'S G-D KNEES.

Don't miss First Printer!
First Printer had a great, interesting cocktail selection, a really cool vibe, and excellent service. We will definitely return! Because it is not on one of the main roads of Harvard Square, it doesn't get great foot traffic and we don't want this gem to disappear. Food was delicious and reasonably priced as well (watch out for the price on the specials though), with a few outside the box offers. Everything about this place was great. If you enjoy a nice cocktail, I would highly recommend this place.

First Printer is great!
Various members of our family have been to this restaurant several times, for lunch, after work drinks and dinner. We recently celebrated our son's birthday there, which was a party of six. The waiter was quite knowledgeable about wine and the halibut special with baby turnips was terrific! My husband had the lobster with johnnycakes, which he also liked. Steak was as ordered, medium-rare. The best part was that the waiter brought out a previously-ordered small, but rich and delicious chocolate birthday cake. It was a perfect size for us all to share.

Creative menu and excellent cocktails in Harvard Square.
Good night out, but not a relaxed, gourmet evening. Music was a bit too loud,
but the Periodista was superb!

Love the Zarzuela!
Our second trip to First Printer and I ordered exactly the same thing- mixed green salad (pesto dressing is a nice touch to a simple salad) and Zarzuela - a seafood stew with a rich tomato base. I love this dish - lots of seafood with potatoes, sweet potatoes and okra. My date had the jambalaya and fried oysters - also great!
Cool private room on the side if you're having a private party.
Not sure why this place isn't busier and hope they're around a while! Check it out when you're in Harvard Square!

Romantic Date Night
My girlfriend and I try to have a special date night every once in a while and my aunt suggested we try The First Printer. The service was outstanding, the drink menu intriguing, the food amazing. We had a great night and will definitely return. Two thumbs up!

We were there early on a Saturday for dinner so it was not crowded or noisy. I liked that we were not rushed at all.

Good choices for all
From vegan to steak eaters, from beer to wine drinkers, First Printer has a few nice items for everyone. The bar boasts about a dozen beers on tap, from domestic to Belgian. Located on the site where the first commercial printer was established in 1638, the restaurant walls pay homage to historic artifacts related to printing. The First Printer serves food in a comfortable casual setting.

Had a great time
Our group of five was comfortably seated in a booth with an odd but excellent, for us, bench arrangement. One side has a bench for two and other a bench for three. Ask for the last booth in the restaurant, away from the bar and most noise. It was delightful and the food very good.

Fun place, great food, love the history. The mushroom burger was incredible!
7/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went for brunch and the food was great. It wasn't super busy and we had a large group so we had a few of the wait staff helping out our primary waiter. I had the lox and eggs benedict which I enjoyed with a bloody mary. The eggs were done just right and the bloddy mary was spicy. Everyone else seemed happy with their order too.
Our waiter was decent, seemed like he was more comfortable behind a bar but all the food came out as ordered and no one was left waiting to be offered a refill or if they wanted coffee or something else.

An Enjoyable Place to Eat and Drink
I've been several times and I keep coming back. Great specials and new menu items but still Lobster! Christine served us again and she provides a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. This time there were 6 of us-2 grandparents, 2 children that loved it and us. i love bringing friends in from out of town. We went at 6pm on a Saturday night which is a good idea. We got out around 7:30pm but that was great. Everything is made to order so don't expect to be out in 45 minutes especially with 6 people. Good times again!
Thank you - First Printer!

Great food, slow service
Very impressed with the food but service was very slow because there was only one waiter for the entire restaurant. In addition, one item on the menu was not available. The manager seemed aware of these problems and mentioned that he was working on it. Until then, be prepared to wait or to order something other than your first choice. Despite the slow service, I would still recommend this place it because the food quality was great. The service part should be easy to fix.

We have been here 4 times & every time it has been wonderful in every way. Our server Jennifer was attentive, friendly & helpful. We strongly recommend this to anyone looking for great food, at a reasonable price in a really cool setting.

A Good Find...
Had lunch here and really enjoyed the food. I had the roast beef sandwich and I think it may have been the best I've ever had. The bread was crusty without being too hard and the au jus had excellent flavor without being too salty. Service was excellent and we recieved a free scoop of ice cream at the end! Would definitely go back again.

First Printer was comfortable, good space, good food, fun ambiance
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had dinner at the First Printer for the first time. Though the menu is kind of "typical American" (we are not :) ) everything was very delicious and different in taste from other American style places we've been. Interesting appetizers, fresh salads with different herbs and an uncommon dressing, homemade pasta and steak cooked to the point!!
It's still not a "gourmet temple", that's why it's 4 and not 5 stars. And they could work on their wine list.

Freshman parent dinner
Struggled to find somewhere to eat and First Printer could fit us in. Hamburger very fatty and a little unpleasant but fish and chips enjoyed. Service friendly and efficient. Ambience good, if a little too loud for me. In spite of hamburger, I like it here, it has an easy going atmosphere and despite being busy we were not rushed at all.

The salmon was the best I have ever had and I have salmon all the time.
The gluten free creme brûlée was the best creme brûlée bar none regardless of the gluten free status.

great menu and the food it great -- nice and tasty and attractive
12/2/2013 4:00:00 PM
Best mashed potatoes ever had. Our table's diners really enjoyed their stuffed pork chop or short ribs with homemade noodles. However, the diner who ordered the Chinese chicken/noodles dish was very dissatisfied but probably shouldn't have ordered a less traditional entree here. The chicken was overcooked & chewy, the sauce too salty & the noodles rubbery. Service was top notch.Sat at a booth which was gleaming wood & clean but wouldn't recommend it for diners of girth as the space to enter the seats cannot be altered.(table is anchored in place.)
In early December 2013, diners were "treated" to odors of paint courtesy of renovation in the vault -- would recommend holding off on a visit as it didn't add to the dining experience.
12/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
It has a good feeling about it, not elegant but far above the ordinary in look. The "old fashioned booths are a treat as are the wooden floors.
The greeters at the front door are friendly and helpful, as are some of the waitresses.
