From underwhelmed to great
I had been wanting to try The Mildred for a little while now and after looking over the menu I thought it would be the perfect place to take my family out to dinner. Upon arriving, we were all a little put off by the fact that on Sundays they ONLY offer the tasting menu. We had all assumed the tasting menu would be in addition to the a la carte menu There were very few choices and for a 6 person table, it left a little to be desired. Between the 6 of us, we ended up getting everything on the menu, and everything was great! From the fresh baked potato bread, the cocktails, the apps, the entrees, up until dessert; everything was perfect. The chef even brought us out a special dessert course that he was "working on" and even that was great.

Ate here on Tuesday night and there was a nice crowd. Had stuffed squid with tomato, eggplant ravioli ( killer! ) and the halibut. Fun place to be and everything is served in cast iron. Nothing like it in the city. Must try. The chef even served my Halibut.

This is my new regular spot. Can say enough good things about this restaurant.

Outstanding meal in Philly
We had the most amazing meal over the 4th of July weekend. This is what I think of as cusine with layered flavors, each dish holds true taste finds. Drinks started creatively, and then we tried the recommended calamari, with small whole mantels, tender and filled with a vegetable/pork mixture that was wonderful, as was the house cauliflower. We had two pasta dishes, as well as the halibut, each with delicious but very different sauces, and ended with a clafouti. Service was outstanding and attentive. Everything is moderately priced, especially given the high quality
It is surprising that the restaurant was not packed, perhaps becuase for the holiday crowd. But we will be going back on our next visit to town.

Excellent dinner, comfortable space
I had seen the restaurant before but this was our first time there. They had excellent cocktails and a good beer selection. The stuffed squid and brisket pasta were exceptional. Our server was extremely knowledgeable, quite pleasant and reasonably attentive. The space is comfortable and relaxing. Really just a nice place that we will be more than happy to return to.

The waiter described the duck with such splendor that 2 of the 3 of us had to have it. The Bouillabaisse was great, but the duck was sublime. Cocktails and wine suggestions on target too.

Serious about food
This place is focused on food quality. I would definitely come back.

It was my first time at the Mildred and it did not disappoint. The service was some of the friendliest i have ever received in years and the food was delicious - definitely recommend the mussels! The atmosphere was low-key - everything was kept simple, the music was not intrusive - just everything about it was pleasant - perfect place for anything from a first-date to a group happy hour - their bar is large and they have great happy hour specials. I am definitely returning...

Everything was excellent.
Everything was excellent. I wasn't a fan of the wine list but the server was knowledgable and gave great recommendations.

We dined at The Mildred this past Friday and had a wonderfully enjoyable meal. The food was very good and tasty. Everything was fresh and served at just the right times. I am hoping that more people find their way to this restaurant because it is very good and price worthy. The dishes we ordered varied and they are were presented in an appealing manner. The waiter was helpful with a wine selection to accompany one of the dishes. I would recommend The Mildred for any occasion or a weeknight dinner. Nice decor and they have valet parking for $8.00.

Philadelphia neighborhood gem
Fantastic food from start to finish. Excellent service without being intrusive. The corn soup was the best my wife and I have had anywhere, and we were happier and happier with each course. We will be back.

Fantastic food, the corn soup was amazing. The atmosphere was really nice, very roomy and not loud even though there were quite a few people and some large groups.

We have been here three times, once for brunch, and every dish we've had here has been excellent. The quality of the food and the service is very high, and the prices are reasonable.

This was our first visit to The Mildred, and we will definitely return. Every detail was perfect, from the warm, candle lit setting to the amazing food. The most difficult part of the experience is narrowing down what to eat. Choose several different plates and share!
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Haven't been disappointed yet! Keep up the good work Mildred!
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were looking for a new restaurant to try after the museum. Even though we were stuck in traffic to get here the food made it so worthwhile. A regular customer recommended we order the 45dollar 4 course meal and we were so happy we did. The favors were wonderful. The word I use to describe the dishes were delicacies!
Don't come here if you want huge plates of greasy French fries and a Big Mac. But if you like fine food, well prepared this is a place to try.
The only reason I'm not giving it a 5 for ambience is they didn't have white tableclothes, otherwise the atmosphere is hip and friendly.

We had a wonderful evening at Mildred's. The tasting menu was superb. It was a bit unusual and excellent. We would definitely return.

A lovely experience
I took a friend here for her birthday who often is not entirely satisfied with Philadelphia restaurants. The staff were lovely, the ambiance warm without being fussy and the food....excellent. While there were very limited options for me as a non-meat-eater, I knew that coming in and had chosen the location for my carnivorous friend. She had the fois gras - which was huge, creamy and delicious - and roast duck. I had a lovely eggplant pasta. Our desert, a delicious baked on the spot cake with plums, was the perfect end to a wonderful meal. I highly recommend The Mildred for anyone seeking a great meal a little off the beaten track and out of the hubbub of downtown.

Been there twice, happy both times
I think the food here is really great, and this is coming from a very picky girl. The first time the service was phenomenal but the second it was fair at best, but I think it was just due to our waitresses inexperience and I'm sure that us being there on her first night didn't help. We tried almost half the menu between us and everything was fantastic, especially the foie grois. I really recommend this place, not only for the food but for the ambiance.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Ate here again for brunch and had a great experience! Shared the ricotta pancake which was amazing! The baked eggs and scrambled eggs and prawns were very tasty! Very spicy bloody Maria!! Great wait staff! Don't understand why the place isn't busier. Really a neighborhood gem!
8/17/2013 5:00:00 PM
very pleasant dining experience!
very pleasant dining experience! I had the stuffed squid appetizer and it was exceptional. It is obvious that the chef takes pride in serving outstanding food.

Elegent, Exquisite, Grounded
Randomly stumbled upon the Mildred while looking for a nice date spot in Hellas Vista, and what a find! Upon entering, the bar stretches out before you as the dining room flows out to your right. Lots of exposed wood and cool tile make it feel homey and warm. Low lights and a fireplace they promise to light in the winter really set the ambiance.
We decided against drinks, though the beer menu looked decent, and the hand brewed iced tea was excellent. We settled into the tasting menu which we tweaked to accommodate my partner's dislike of pork. Everything was excellent. The service, as well, was prompt, helpful, and extremely accommodating. The sheer lack of pretense in such a high class place was what blew us away. Definitely will return

Fast becoming a new favorite
The food and service at The Mildred is among the best in the city. We will be returning again and again.
9/3/2013 5:00:00 PM
Perfect for date, celebration
Manhattan was a delicious start to a meal without flaw. Every dish was delicious, beautifully presented. My only complaint: food was so good that I left uncomfortably full, but then that's more my problem than the restaurant's!
9/5/2013 5:00:00 PM
We had an outstanding expreience at The Mildred. We were greeted with a great smile when we came in and sat at the bar to toast our anniversary..The bartender was very attentive and made a fabulous drink for the occassion. Then we were seated at our table with a personal note from the management acknowledging our anniversary...a very nice touch!
We sampled several dishes from heirloom tomatoe salad , awesome Caesar, Chicken & Biscuits (our all time favorite), and a wonderful seafood medley. Dessert was the bomb.....peach crumble with cinnamon ice cream...YUM!
A perfect nite.....thanks...Mildred!!

Food was exceptional. Wine and beer were great. Stuffed squid was the tenderest ever. Great spot.

Such a great night again at the Mildred..Celebrated their one year anniversary with a showcase of a 5 course meal paired with great tasting beer from Goose Island...The tasting was a outstanding ..everything is so fresh here and thoughtfully prepared...Delicious!!

Sublime bouillabaisse, crusty
Sublime bouillabaisse, crusty home bread and flavorful and tender beet salad made a wonderful meal. They have a good selection of cocktails, wine and after dinner drinks including Framboise and Pear William!

Why did it take me a year????
We went to The Mildred the day after its one-year anniversary night. I only wish we had gone earlier. It was a fantastic experience. I had the Duck entree which was just about the best duck (non Peking duck that is) I've ever had. My partner had the Brisket and Mac/cheese which was great too. The service was excellent, and BTW, wine prices by the bottle were entirely reasonable and had some interesting Spanish wines (I happen to be a real fan). You will not be disappointed!
9/12/2013 5:00:00 PM
A real find!
I don't know how I heard about the Mildred but I had no expectations. My friend and I were blown away by the food -- such delicious combinations of spices...THe eggplant ravioli and the bouillabaise were outstanding. Only disappointed there was no peach crisp!!!!!!!!!!!

Local Neighborhood Philly Gem
We had a wonderful meal start to finish. The veal meatballs and polenta along with the stuffed squid were terrific starters. The short rib with Parmesan pasta and the scallops with pumpkin and scallions were awesome main courses. All dishes were served in various skillets/pans with a simple but nice presentation. The cocktails were great and they had a small, but quality wine list. We shared a warm plum desert. The staff were friendly and attentive. Nice atmosphere. All around winner. Congrats to Michael Doris and his restaurant partner.

Haute cuisine meets comfort food.
Really terrific dining experience. Relaxing and romantic. We started with a beet salad and the veal meatballs on polenta...both were heavenly. Partner had eggplant ravioli with ricotta and I had the braised short rib...both were outstanding. They had just gotten a new Chardonnay in and it was divine...I think it was a Roussillon. Service was efficient and executed with a natural ease. If the prices were a bit less we would make this a frequent neighborhood dine. Will probably reserve it for times we want to spoil ourselves or out of town guests. Completely worth the price.

Simple, clean, delicious food. Wine list was great too!

The food at The Mildred is always enjoyable. Our waitress was lovely, but she was bustling around and I felt we got a bit lost in the shuffle at times. Still, we were seated promptly and the staff was very professional and attentive. Despite the closeness of the tables, I didn't feel that I couldn't have a personal conversation. I will be back for sure.
10/4/2013 5:00:00 PM
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I don't think you could say a single bad thing about this place. I have always had a love for family style eating and that is exactly what my group did. Between the 5 of us, we ordered just about everything on the menu (and would do it again in a heartbeat). The drinks were also top-notch. For myself, I ordered the "Mr. Mister" and a couple of my friends ordered the "Here's to You".
Lastly, I would like to also say thank you the owners of The Mildred for being so accommodating to our group as we came in with quite a large party. We were uncertain about the final number of guests we would have, but they made everything easy for us and worked to set things up as we all came in.

Wonderful food, excellent service, just a little too
noisy. I would try to sit in the nook by the fireplace.
The noise won't stop me from returning.

Interesting Concept, Great Food
We enjoyed our evening at The Mildred. The food is wonderful, but a few appetizers or starters would be a nice addition to the menu.
Parking on a week night was non existent so if you don't live nearby go on a weekend.
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Outstanding, a must try.
One of the best meals I have had in philadelphia. The service was outstanding, the ambience was terrific and the food was incredible and innovative, each plate was better than the next. It's hard to say the best part if the experience. The executive chef came out to speak with us and thank us for trying the Mildred out, very gracious. Five stars for sure.

Excellent flavors, small portions
The flavors in each dish were superb - truly delicious. The portions erred heavily on the smaller side. Our carrot salad was the smallest thing I'd ever seen for $10+ dollars. Service was spotty, but all around it was a good experience.

Delicious food -- great restaurant!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to The Mildred. Everything we ate was delicious. We went with another couple and all of us loved the food. The portions are definitely small, so you have to be prepared to order a little more than you normally would. Which results in it being a little more expensive that it would seem at first blush based on the item prices. The menu is extremely small, but we found plenty to love for everyone and their various food requirements. The wine list was small but perfect and they had a decent beer selection as well. They will allow you to BYO for a $15 corkage fee. And the fireplace was a real plus. We would definitely go back!

This was my first brunch at The Mildred. Prior meals were dinner. Menu was diverse with something to please everyone randing from eggs to "real food". Eggs benedict with duck was excellent. Service was friendly and attentive. The Mildred should definitely be on the list for Sunday's!

I went here for my father's birthday. I had been here for brunch before but was curious to see how their dinner was like. The entire table decided to go with the 4 course tasting make things easy. We started with an amuse-bouche of escargot skewers which were delightful. The sauce that was drizzled on top was delightfully fragrant and rich. The remaining courses were the appetizer (3 from the menu shared btwn 4 ppl), 3 pasta dishes, the bouillabaisse for the main and a cheese plate for dessert. I was surprised at how they decided to do the tasting family styled. I liked it that way, but the portions were a bit small. Either way, the food was great and the chef came out peronally to explain the cheese plate which was nice.

Wonderful Homestyle Meal
My wife and I were in town for the marathon and made a special trip to The Mildred based on recommendations we read on Eater. We enjoyed the four-course tasting menu, the highlight of which was the heritage pork. Service was attentive and friendly, and the food was absolutely delicious. The hand spun bucatini 'cacio e pepe' was rich and creamy, and the roast sunchoke was perfectly seasoned. An excellent meal all-around!

So good, I went back for brunch
After our first dinner there Saturday night we enjoyed it so much we went for brunch Sunday morning. Both times the food was exquisite. Presentation is done in Staub cast iron cookware (even coffee is served in them.) Dinner was with a group of friends so we were able to sample most of the menu (& clafoutis dessert mmm!) Brunch was the two of us and we ate more than necessary just to taste all the delicious food. I dare say brunch here will spoil all your favorite spots because it's in a different league. It begs the question why bother with the wait at Sabrina's a block away when the food here is superior and tables plentiful. I almost don't want to tell people about Mildred to keep this neighborhood gem a secret.

A Night to Remember
Beer and wine offerings were very good. The general manager, Michael Dorris, met us at the bar and shared the history of the Mildred, a nice touch. The place was very clean, lighting was just right, the noise level was energetic and the fireplace was crackling, a very warm atmosphere. The wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable without being intrusive. The food was exquisite. The flavors in each dish were superb. The bread was fresh and warm and the rabbit meatballs were the best. The main courses were equally spectacular. We had the striped bass, the vertical chicken, the tavern steak and the bouillabaisse, all cooked to perfection. This place was amazing. It is definitely fit for foodies, good for groups, and a real neighborhood gem!

World class meal
We just ate dinner at The Mildred. Sat Nov 30. Food was at such a high level. Tavern steak, chicken dish cooked perfectly. Pasta made in house is also perfection. Veal meatballs and polenta, heavenly. Apple pie and cinnamon ice cream was enough for two and again perfect. All i can say is go there now!!
