My favorite spot for seafood. I'm never disappointed.

Modern Mexican (Yum)
We dined at Salpicon prior to Second City and enjoyed it immensely. We dined early so the restaurant was uncrowded. While nicely decorated, the food is what is on display. Very colorful presentations. The pork dish with salsa potatoes and a spicy guacamole was memorable for its nice mix of flavors, colors and spice.

Food quality and taste were outstanding. Would like a few more choices on the menu. We had an 8:30 reservation and were seated immediately. The service was outstanding.

Salpicon has joined a list of favorite high-end spots. Off the beaten path perhaps but worth any effort There are outstanding traditional Mexican plates, not Tex-Mex, and they also take excellent American/Euro cuisine and give it a delightful flair. Your taste buds are challenged extensively and nearly always fully satisfied. Now the wine list and selections are enough to rave about for any eatery, and the staff joyfully share a high level of expertise to help your choice.
Sunday brunch is not to be missed.
Will be back many times.

We grabbed a last minute reservation and are so glad that we did. The food was great, including the homemade guacamole and tamales. Our server was very helpful and made great recommendations. Also, I had the best margarita I've had in years.

Try the tasting menu
We have visited Salpicon on many occasions - we often have the tasting menu, which allows us to sample a wide variety of menu offerings. They will accommodate special requests - either for dietary restrictions or favorite dishes. The wine pairing was particularly astute on this most recent trip, although it is always good. Be prepared for a slightly noisy restaurant, as it is small and often busy. The tequila list is outstanding and the staff will match cocktails or tequilas with the food as well. Salpicon is consistently outstanding.

We celebrated a birthday there and had superb food, excellent service and a wonderful time. The only little "oops" was when we requested one of the two tables nearest the windows. I had even called earlier in the day and requested a front table. When we arrived we were told that the two window tables had both been reserved before our reservation was received. Hmmmmm. No one was seated at either of the two tables for at least a half an hour after we were seated at an alternative table. And the other table was never used by the time we left. It was obvious that we were seen as not deserving of a window table even though we were three attractive, well-dressed women. This snooty attitude is the one thing I dislike about Salpicon.

Wonderful Mexican food
Wonderful service, the food was delicious. I cannot eat spicy food, though, and they had only a very few items on the menu that were not spicy. And though our waitress was terrific, she did not say they could make them mild. So I had few choices. What I did eat was wonderful. Expect to spend plenty of money.

This place is always consistent
This place is always consistent in terms of food and service. Their wine program is not to be overlooked. In fact, the tasting menu with premium wine pairings is still the way to go for the adventuresome. The service was a bit rushed at times but the final verdict was outstanding in all respects. The current version of main entrees including sockeye salmon and the always consistent pollo en mole poblano are particular standouts....do not leave this establishment without trying them both!!
More tequila to choose from than can be imagined.
When dinning in Chicago and considering a gourmet Mexican option, there is only one place to consider and Salpicon is it!

This place was amazing. Highly recommended for great wine, tequila and fine dining.
7/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Given some of the mixed reviews on here, I wasn't exactly sure what I was getting into when making a reservation. It's been a few years since I last ate here and my last experience was pretty good. Thus, I was surprised by the negative reviews as of late. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised that this place was exactly how I remember it. The food was very good and service was adequate. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. It was busy so the waiter didn't check in with the table as much as I'd expect but he was attentive and responsive. We had the guacamole and chips for an appetizer and then the pork chops and beef tenderloin for entrees. All were very good and cooked beautifully. I'll definitely be back.

A "DO NOT MISS" in Chicago
When in Chicago, we always find the time for a great meal at Salpicon! The creative south-of-the-border fare, wine list, tequila/mezcal selections, knowledgeable and friendly staff.......always come through!
The "feel" is of a neighborhood gem, and it is! A synergy of everything that's right at this well-run restaurant!
7/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Glad this is in my neighborhood
Always yummy and the margaritas are real (none of that awful mix)! I love the fact that you can pick whatever tequila suits your taste for your margarita too. Probably the best guacamole I have ever had dining out. Will return again and again.
7/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Salpicon is a wonderful restaurant in so many ways. Wonderful food, for example the soft-shell crabs. Superb service. Great surroundings. Wonderful cocktails and a wine list of exceptional quality. It is one of our favorite places anywhere,
7/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is a go-to restaurant for us. We never had a bad meal, in fact, it is one of the places we count on and it does not disappoint. The food is elegantly conceived with care and consideration for combinations of flavors that both surprise and satisfy. Recently, we had the copper river salmon that was cooked to perfection, fabulous tequila options and tastings are fun. highly recommend this restaurant.
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
I dined here for the first time and I enjoyed brunch with 3 friends. I was amazed at the high quality ingredients and fresh, but true, flavors. I'm looking forward to my next visit.
7/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Service was outstanding - all aspects.
We ordered the lamb and the salmon - textures, flavours all outstanding.
Excellent wine list, thankfully very nice wines at a lower price point as well.

Our 2nd visit for special
Our 2nd visit for special occassion. Again, outstanding meal, service and presentation. Very professional, customer friendly restaurant.
7/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great meal and service-salmon
Great meal and service-salmon was excellent and so was the guacamole
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Mexican food but not what you would typically expect. I had the scallops and they were wonderful. The wine list is the biggest one I have ever seen. We ended up, however, ordering margaritas using the recommendation of our waiter. Glad we did as they were very tasty. It is a little expensive but well worth the price.
7/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Back to being regulars!
A previous dinner service was disappointing, because of inattentive service. As a result,we decided to give the place a rest for awhile. We are happy to report that our recent visit was delightful. We have dined here many times over the years. We will be back .
8/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing food, service and the best Tequila selection you will find anywhere! Great wine list as well. I highly recommend!

First time at salpicon
my wife and i had a really nice time, and the food was great. Started with an anejo tequila flight (reserva de señor was fantastic) and guacamole. The guacamole was some of the best I've had. The avocado still had some of its shape and there was more lime juice in it than I usually notice. Then had the 3 sopes and the jicama salad. The shrimp sope was especially good. Dinner was pork tenderloin and lamb tenderloin. Both were great, though the sauce on the lamb could have been more vibrant. Dessert was molten chocolate cake and the mango cobbler. Both great. Definitely going back, and can enjoy some high end Mexican without an insane wait.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is not your typical Mexican restaurant. Not by a long shot. The selections of meats and fresh fish are complimented by an extensive offering of wines from around the world. The combination of spices were distinct but not overpowering. Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly and attentive. Salpicon has been added to our Open Table Favorites.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had an early dinner at Salpicon on a Saturday night . We decided to eat outside, which was lovely. We ate very early in order to catch a show that evening, so a later night experience might be somewhat different. Other than the loud family table with kids that we sat next to, our experience was outstanding. The food was wonderful, especially the stuffed jalapeno appetizer. The portions were just enough. I had the house margarita (on the rocks). It was smallish, but was one of the best margaritas I've had. If you are looking for more of a tex mex joint, this is NOT your place. The food is more upscale, complex and unique.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent meal, perfect service, unmatched wine list! Loved it
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had a wonderful time at Salpicon. The food was fantastic. Each of the four of us had something different and all said theirs was wonderful. The service was great with the waiter being very attentive and the sommelier who was very knowledgable. The place was in a wonderful neighborhood. Everyone enjoyed themselves. We would definitely go again.

Not your typical Mexican Restaurant
Unique dishes, fast service (we were there early), tasty margaritas and a very extensive wine list! We enjoyed the soft shell crab appetizer, pork tenderloin and shrimp entrees. Our server was knowledgeable and the bus staff and food runners were equally as attentive. If you are looking for something different and willing to pay fine dining prices then try it!

Lovely Food, Service a Bit Slapdash
Drink and food were excellent - including a good selection of vegetarian appetizers. But despite seating our party of five over two hours before our curtain time at the theater up the street, and despite very good service for the first hour and a half we were there, our server lost track of the time, so our desserts, ordered at about 40 minutes before curtain, showed up too late to enjoy. Not a lapse one expects in a restaurant as high-level as this.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent service and food
There were three in our party. The server was well informed and able to handle all questions. He and the other staff made sure that our water glasses were full and our empty dishes cleared - without unduly disturbing us. They made an error making a margarita for one of us. She hadn't noticed, although she thought it was not a very good drink. When they discovered the error they made a new drink for her - even though she hadn't said anything to them about the original drink.
The food was excellent. Spicy dishes were piquant but not overly so. They served a habanero sauce on the side for one of us who asked for a spicier dish. That enabled her to make the dish as spicy as she wanted. The other food was nicely seasoned.

Tasty Mexican, exquisite service
Each course was a masterpiece of texture and favors that were complex but not pretentious. The stuffed poblano peppers were not what I expected a delicious combination of fruits and veggies and delicious. Reasonably priced. A very helpful sommelier and very welcoming host.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Disappointed to be seated
Disappointed to be seated on the main floor instead of upstairs (closed for private party). . . otherwise a very nice evening.

A place that serves unique
A place that serves unique food. I brought a friend from Toyko there and, of course, he loved it and they have nothing like it in Japan or in most cities in the USA.

We love Salpicon
This is one of our favorite places in Chicago. It is consistent delicious, service is great and it has a warm ambiance.
9/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Premium tasting for your taste buds
Salpicon is always going to provide a very tasty meal in a quite nice setting. Service is always accomodating, professional and unobtrusive. I typically recommend trying the 7-course tasting with premium wines. With the addition of a new sommelier (Ashley) I remain even more confident in making this suggestion. On a recent trip the tasting began with pescado tartaro which was capably paired with Pol Roger NV champagne. I was soon heard to say "Take me now Lord as it can not get any better than this!" But.....it did for six additional courses. Muy delicioso!! Let Salpicon take you and your taste buds on a jouney where both are certain to encounter new horizons of sensory excellence in classic Mexican cuisine. Until next time......

Como se dece Wow...
Really loud, but the quality and variety of the food is worth it all...wear ear plugs and have the best Mexican food of your life...be sure to advice for the wine pairings...they have it down...bar-b q shrimp memorable.

As good as Topolobambo
We have been going to Salpicon for years. For refined Mexican dining it rivals Topolobambo. We are fortunate to have Salpicon along with the Bayless restaurants in Chicago. Our waiter, Jose, is the best! This past visit my wife had soft shell crabs from New Zeeland, and I had lamb chops from New Zeeleand with an incredible mole.
Just go- you'll love it and it's worth the price. Also terrific margaritas and sipping taquilas.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wow, what a margarita....more tequila choices than I knew existed and they all can be selected for a great margarita!!!
10/18/2013 5:00:00 PM
Good experience - would come back
The food was good - a tasty meal although it did not overly impress. The service is terrific and the marg list is very robust - very good margs. The scallops and shrimp were cooked perfectly and the sauces are terrific - the cactus dish was interesting - loved the sauce but the cactus itself was a bit much.

We live across the street
We live across the street and tend to go elsewhere but we were unable to because of surgery so we went on Saturday night and had a great time. The food was excellent and the wine was good too. We shared an appetizer and dessert and the were great. Very knowledgeable about their food and wine. They had a good crowd and everything was outstanding!
10/25/2013 5:00:00 PM
As usual, we had wonderful food, excellent service and a great evening. This is our go-to restaurant for high quality innovative food. Far superior to any other Mexican food in the city in our opinion.
A consistent excellent experience.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
the food at Salpicon is wonderful. The wine and tequila lists are encyclopedic. The service is ok,I felt a little pushy at times. It is a place with truly great tasting food.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Along with the best guacamole I've ever had, the food was top notch. Margaritas too. We happened to hit it on a relatively quiet night, so it was special. Wonderful.
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great for a first visit
I brought a friend here for their first time in Chicago and it did not disappoint. The food was great, our server was very helpful and fun, and we had a great time. Perfect to go to before or after a show at Second City.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
A Perfect Evening
We were seated at a quiet corner table that we requested in the reservation. Creative menu with every dish perfectly executed! Knowledgable waitstaff who can direct you to the perfect margarita!
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
service was unremarkable,
service was unremarkable, and i'm used to it being really great.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
This was a wonderful experience overall. The ambiance is okay, your average cloth covered chairs in a smallish dining area. It was a little underwhelming at first glance. However the food...delicious! All six of us had something different and everyone enjoyed their food. I loved my short ribs and asparagus. My only knock would be that I felt my mashed potatoes were not as thick as I like. They have a huge tequilla list and a pretty extensive wine list as well. Service was attentive and knowledgeable as well.
Overall, I would certainly reccomend.

We have been going to Salpicon
We have been going to Salpicon for years. Consistently very good. Imaginative Mexican cuisine.
11/30/2013 4:00:00 PM
This is our favorite restaurant in the city. This time the food was exceptionally good. We went with the wine pairing for dinner, and the time the restaurant dedicated to making our meal out of this world was amazing.
5/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wow....we loved this place!
We were in Chicago for a week from LA and this was our best culinary experience of the trip. We found that some of the most highly rated restaurants were over-hyped, and that they under delivered. This restaurant, on the other hand, delivered on every aspect. The food was outstanding. The service was excellent. The wine list was quite good. We would highly recommend this restaurant. If you like Mexican food, this place is amazing.
