Took my friend here for her
Took my friend here for her birthday brunch. It wasn't very busy when we arrived but filled up as we ate. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful with menu info and suggestions. My friend had shrimp and grits, with bacon and cheese in the grits. It was very tasty! I ordered the duck leg confit hash with potatoes, poached eggs, and a wonderful stone mustard cream sauce. Oh yeah, and toast with vanilla bean orange marmalade! This is one of the best dishes I think I've ever eaten. It was so flavorful and the combination of ingredients was perfect. We really enjoyed ourselves. We'll definitely go again.

Thank you so much for making my birthday dinner such a special experience! Just like last year , it was amazing and it's so wonderful that your restaurant can accommodate parties over 10! Food was great, drinks were great, and the staff was friendly, patient, and helpful. Thank you thank you!

Neil's Brekkie was amazing.
Neil's Brekkie was amazing. Ambiance was much more casual than I expected but a welcome surprize. The house made worchestershire is better than any store bought I have ever tried. My only complaint is our hostess didn't know the drink menu. We asked for iced tea and she didn't know they had it. The person I was with pointed it out on the menu. Can't wait to go back for dinner

This was our first time at
This was our first time at Smithfields but we had googled the menu and knew pretty much what to expect. We arrived around 7:00pm which tends to be a very busy time due to plays starting at 8pm. We did wait a bit before we received a menu or had our drink order taken. After that, things flowed fairly easily. The bar was empty that night so we made the decision to come back the next night and sit at the bar. We ordered cocktails, your hamburger (by far the best value on your menu),a great glass of wine and Fort George beer. We enjoyed this experience very much. The bar was busy that night which made the atmosphere upbeat. We had a very new bartender and he was delightful.

Superb food with everything
Superb food with everything possible locally sourced. The chef does his own butchering and makes his own corned beef for the best Ruben I have ever had. Salads and vegetables all have creative, lovely twists. Although meat centric, there are menu items to please every palate. Great selection of whiskeys, artisan beers and fun cocktails with a thoughtful wine list and competent advice available from the staff.

Creative menu , wonderful service , in the heart of Ashland. Highty recommend, looking forward to my next meal there.
The goat cheese soufflé was the perfect first plate for a special dinner

This is a great eatery serving
This is a great eatery serving dishes made from local ingrediants. Both Ala Carte dining and full meals are available. The wine list though limited contains some great local wines though wine pricing is at the high end. There were also several french labels. This is a place to eat meat, that's their speciality, viva the carnavore.

Inventive, Quality Food Experience
Smithfields is now part of our annual Ashland OSF experience. We discovered it last year and enjoyed it. We returned this year and loved it. Their "Developed" dishes are creative culinary treats. I had the Char-grilled hangar steak and my wife the Duck leg confit "cassoulet." both were superb. The wine list allows for a large variety of by-the-glass choices featuring a number of excellent Oregon wines. A dish of heavenly, home-made mint chip ice cream capped it off - and off we went to the theater.
5/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
We ate at a upper corner outdoor table with friends from another city. It was late morning of a beautiful Mother's Day. Couldn't have been nicer other than that they were out of prosecco!
5/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
Some Great, some just ok.
So...Lovely decor, nice atmosphere, then stale, cold popcorn in an uninspired brown bag :( , then fantastic pate with lovely bread and pickles! Then one bland risotto with nicely cooked fish and excellent topping of micro-greens, then one cassoullet with very nice duck confit and beans with weird burnt crunchy bits of sausage. This was a birthday dinner and they brought a really nice chocolate toffee cake with candle and did not sing (thank goodness)! Decent selection of Scotch!
I do want to try it again but I think I will try a late lunch sitting at the bar next time.
5/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
I am really glad to have found this excellent spot in Ashland. This is gourmet food with some homey feel to it. The roasted marrow was absolutely to die for. I had the Ling Cod - which was perfect. So well put together with a lovely risotto and micro greens. Well balanced, and perfect portion sized. My husband had the prime rib - lovely with a horseradish mash. The sides were great - a nice garlicy creamed spinach, but not the over cooked glop you get at some steakhouses, but a more stewed style of spinach - very fresh and lovely. The snap peas with preserved lemon were also fantastic. You can tell that real care goes into the food preparation. The extensive whiskey menu was also fantastic. We will definitely be back!

Great Time Celebrating
The smells coming from the kitchen when you first enter the restaurant entice you to want to try everything on the menu, and once you read the menu that feeling only gets stronger. Took some of my graduating seniors there before going to a show and the treatment of our table by the wait staff was exemplary. Usually folks see a bunch of high school students and they think no tip, why try, but all of the staff that came to our table were gracious, intelligent about the menu, and gave overall great service.

Sunday Brunch with Friends
We had a very pleasant brunch with our next door neighbors . This was our first visit to Smithfields .
We had done the "food crawl " a few months ago and one of the featured places was Smithfields .
We were impressed and made our mind up to come back . Brunch was our first experience .
We do look forward to coming back again for dinner this time .

Fantastic food and service
Our family of 4 enjoyed a wonderful dinner prior to an OSF play, and we all liked our meals. I had one of their signature bar drinks (made with bourbon and ginger), which was very tasty. The hamburgers are delicious, and the duck leg, roasted chicken, halibut, and asparagus risotto were all excellent. The service was attentive without being invasive. It was pretty quiet and we were surprised that it wasn't more crowded on a Sunday evening. We would definitely recommend this restaurant, especially for a special occasion. Be aware that it is expensive, but you get what you pay for--fresh, well-prepared and well-presented food.

Great Meal & Experience
Very glad we chose to check out Smithfield's for our wedding anniversary dinner. The steaks were high quality & cooked to
perfection. The charcuterie board was just ridiculously good. We'll be going back & bringing friends.

Took my wife to Smithfields for our 30th Anniversary. Read some of the comments about poor service and small portions, but friends had told us it was good. All I can say is "WOW" we were pleasantly surprised. The staff was excellent and attentive, the food was amazing.
You got to try this place! We will be back.
7/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
You have to be a carnivore, but if you are, this is your place! Wonderful service, ambiance was simple but appropriate to the venue, and the food was delightful and well presented. The grilled Romaine as a starter set the stage and after a perfectly prepared beef course the chocolate cherry churned in house ice cream completed a perfect evening. Do not miss this place when in Ashland...

I'll be back!
Group of 3 in town to see a few plays and the best thing about our trip was dinner at Smithfield. The bacon beignet appetizer was good, but not great. However, our entrees were amazing. The standout dish was the pork belly on mashed potatoes and collard greens. I would definitely order that again. We also enjoyed the hanger steak , mac n cheese, and their special that day, bbq bacon-wrapped shrimp with polenta. We ended the meal with their chocolate hazelnut torte which the server was nice enough to make a-la-mode for us at our request of salted caramel ice cream. Great meal! We all enjoyef our wines as well. Fairwell Ashland, we will be back and the first stop will be Smithfields!

Wow. A destination food experience. Animals are delicious, and Smithfield's knows how to cook them.

One of the best meals that I've had in Ashland in the past twenty years. Excellent food, great cocktails, good value. I will be back.

Great restaurant, casual fine
Great restaurant, casual fine dining in the heart of Ashland. Four of us for dinner tonight. 3 enjoyed the flank steak dinner, cooked to each person's preference, very tasty, ample portion. 1 enjoyed the salmon, a little undercooked to my liking, but still very good. The dessert and wine menu complemented our meal. Our 2nd time at Smithfileds, as enjoyable as the first. Definitely will be back next time through Ashland.

Fabulous food in Ashland
We were in Ashland for the Shakespeare Festival ans got a recommendation from a friend to come here. I had the watermelon and Heirloom tomato salad which was sub a mouthwatering combination. I followed that with the Pork Belly which sat on a bed of the most delicious collard greens. We shared the strawberry sorbet for dessert and it tasted like fresh Oregon Strawberries. Everything was delicious!!!! Service was fantastic. Patio was awesome.

On the Road
A pleasant surprise for our over night in Ashland . Read about it in Mix Magazine and made reservations.
Best Cosmo around. Food creative, loved the use of local, seasonal products. Staff attentive, pleasant.

Before the Play that was cancelled
We always look forward to dining at Smithfields before seeing plays. Service is generally efficient and attentive. This time it was efficient in the extreme in terms of delivering food withoutthe wait staff observing that perhaps a second glass of wine might be desirable. The dishes were delivered and the wait staff gone before the diner could even express an order. In contrast, appetizers (olives and bread) took a good twentyminutes to arrive. The food was on the salty side from the complementary popcorn to the entrees.
We will retrun despite the off night.
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Smithfields has the most varied and unique brunch menu! Lots of eggs, of course, but also things like Fried Chicken and Waffle, Shrimp and Grits (which was good for me since I'm gluten free). Its fun to dine outside when the weather is nice. There is plenty of shade.
8/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our regular spot!
We love Smithfield's, and every time there is something new and lovely. Chef Neil is always researching and perfecting. Dee at the front is a lovely person and every wait person has been helpful, knowledgeable about everything to eat and drink. Everyone there is happy to be there and to see you. It is a fun atmosphere, but perfect for a intimate meal as well.
8/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
In a town like Ashland, it's rare to find a "meat-centric" restaurant that makes no apologies for what they are! Vegetarians need not apply... This is a restaurant that prides itself on MEAT!
The ambiance was simple-cool, the service was top-notch, and the food was unique, fun, and flavorful.
This is a must-visit for anyone who loves a good restaurant, and loves to eat meat!!!
8/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great value, mixed about flavors
It was tough going from super salty popcorn to more delicately flavored charcuterie plate. The cured meats could stand up to the transition but the parfait and rilletes could not. Excellent cheese soufflé. Love that Hangar steak cut was on the menu. Good vegetable accompaniments available. A little underwhelmed by the chocolate torte but found the creme brûlée quite nice. We were very full by the end. I am willing to give it another try.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
I had the fried chicken this
I had the fried chicken this time, and it was some of the best chicken I've ever eaten. Bread was fantastic and the large whiskey menu was both a pleasant surprise and a great fit for the meat-centric menu. Someone in my party ordered the hamburger and found it mediocre–I had it the last time and I agreed. Roast chicken was also excellent.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Does what it says on the tin
We chose Smithfield for its claim of being meat centric and it didn't disappoint. My wife's pork belly was very good and my cassoulet while not authentic was very good. Good beer and wine to accompany a very nice meal, with efficient friendly service. We would come again.
9/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
We took our two children (8yo and 10yo) here for brunch. The menu has plenty of selections that can be made kid friendly, depending on your kids' tastes. My eggs were poached perfectly, the bacon was smokey and crisp. The potato cake was made with red potatoes which gave it a smooth texture although it had a crisp exterior. The shrimp and grits were very good and the bacon and egg bloody mary was perfectly spicy.
We sat outdoors. The weather was perfect and there was a nice, open, casual feel. My wife and I decided we are definitely coming back for dinner and drinks with friends.
9/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
We've now eaten here twice on our visits to Ashland. Both times the food was excellent. I had the chargrilled ribeye with horseradish mashed potatoes (a special) and my wife had the filet. Both were cooked perfectly (medium for us).
The wine list is not large but has a good variety. I had a glass of the Kim Crawford unoaked chardonnay, and a couple glasses of the Roxy 2009 Claret which was a real find (so much so that I ordered some from the winery when I got home).
If you're looking for meat, this is the place.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Smithfield's is superb, meat focused and does its own butchering, charcuterie, smoking of meats, but also carefully makes sauces, pickles, mustards, dressings and is masterful in preparation not only of meats, but also of seafood, chicken, soups, salads, fresh local vegetables and anything else that is served. There is outstanding pride of preparation and presentation with no ostentation.
Great bar with an extensive selection of whiskeys, a great wine list and helpful servers.
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always stop while in Ashland
Usually have a meal here when we layover in Ashland. I like that a the dishes aren't overly complicated. Nice selection of wines by the glass, with some interesting oregon wines. My ribs were a bit on the salty side this time, and I don't skimp on the salt at home. Most likely the spice rub, so they may want to tone it down a bit.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Absolutely no complaints! Servers all worked together to make sure everyone was taken care of, food was unique and flavorful, and it was upscale without being pretentious. Loved it!!
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Meat centric, but good veggies too
Very satisfying, good portions, avoided excess use of salt common in many 'meaty' restaurants. Unusual entrees, especially at brunch, contribute to the experience.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Smith fields had the feel and ambiance of a good old English pub with delicious hearty food, perfect for the cold night we ate there. The GM was very helpful with describing dishes and wine.

Come hungry, be patient!
In Ashland restaurants get slammed before the Shakespeare plays begin. We had dinner on a Thursday at 6:30 PM. The restaurant was very busy, but not crazy. I wouldn't want to be there on a Fri. or Sat. night before the plays. That being said, I highly recommend the cucumber cosmo cocktail, bacon begneits, grilled romain salad, creamed spinach. The filet mignon was good, but not as good as Beasy's. The chocolate torte had an odd consistency and blandish flavor. We shaved off the outsides of the torte with our spoons and scooped it up with the wonderful (but scant) sauce at the bottom of the bowl. Freshly brewed decaf coffee was amazing. Other reviewers have noted, and I agree, service needs to improve. Lots of good info. at their website.

Much more than meat
We stay in Ashland occasionally on the way to visit family in CA. Discovered Smithfields when manager at another hotel recommended it because their restaurant was closed the day we were there. He mentioned that Smithfields features meat but also uses local produce. That attracted us and we loved it. The salads, vegetables, and desserts are imaginative and wonderful, as well as the meat. The restaurant isn't very big and when it's crowded like it was this time (Shakespeare was still on), it is somewhat noisy. In the off-season it's quieter. Service is friendly and attentive. The last three times we've passed through Ashland we've gone to Smithfields. We have been so satisfied, we hesitate to try another restaurant now.

A gem among gems
Ashland has many delightful restaurants and this is definitely one of them. The service is exceptional and the food is tasty and interesting. This can be a meat lover's paradise with panache! Going for a somewhat lighter meal I settled on the goat cheese soufflé ...wow, what a treat! Surrounded by a lovely sauce with roasted beets, crostini and a small butter lettuce salad...it was delightful. All meals at our table were thoroughly enjoyed. The desserts looked wonderful and innovative. Looking forward to a return visit to Smithfields!
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food strange service
We enjoyed a splendid feast that started with bacon beignet with creme freche, roasted squash soup and goat cheese souffle for starters, followed by a scrumptious steelhead and bacon-wrapped shrimp and grits. Food was awesome. When I asked our waiter for a wine recommendation, it was clear he couldn't distinguish one from another. He response when asked to describe the difference between 2 wines was that one was "dry;" not the response I was looking for. Since the wine list is limited, it would be my expectation that servers can describe the wines fully so guests can make an informed choice.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fab food, Fun place
If you are looking for a lively, bistro atmosphere, Smithfield's is the place. The top-notch quality of their 'meat-centric' menu and shellfish galore is out-standing. They also have several very enticing vegetarian options. Service is efficient and friendly, but not stuffy or haphazard. The bar is well stocked and knowledgable, wine list diverse and comprehensive. Chances are you will strike up a conversation with the folks sitting next to you; it's that kind of place. Within easy walking distance to the Shakespeare Festival, the staff is well trained in getting play-goers their dinner in a timely but unhurried fashion. We have been there several times, and have always had a great experience, and excellent food.

Incredible - and not just the meat
Our annual trip to Ashland, and our third trip to Smithfields. Fantastic food, friendly, efficient service. Delicious charcuterie. Highly recommended.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
meat lovers paradise
Wanted something special before the theater and Smithfields did not disappoint ! The cured meat board starter was lip smacken good and a great accompaniment to the micro beers on tap. We moved onto the evenings specials...house cured bacon fried & green tomatoes, and the bacon wrapped shrimp on polenta..and were very happy !!! Our ending was the bread pudding with poached pears...Just perfect !!!

Very good but TOO LOUD!
We had a great birthday dinner with another couple. The food and service were excellent. The only negative thing was that we couldn't talk at our table. None of us could hear the other person's comments. The entire restaurant was abuzz with conversations, so much that we just couldn't hear each other at all during dinner. It was rather stressful, and we ended up not ordering dessert for that reason and went some place quieter for dessert. Thank you for the opportunity to put in some constructive critique. I hope this helps with your restaurant operation - otherwise we all loved it!
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
The beignets were crispy on the outside and the inside was like a soufflé. They are not doughnut-like, so that's something to note. The burger was incredible - juicy, great cheese, rockin' thick house-smoked bacon, and the fries were at the top of my all-time list. Housemade ketchup tasted like real tomatoes and not sweet like other ketchups. The bun was forgettable, but it did soak up the burger juices and did not get soggy.
The service was good and it seems that everyone who works there will swing by and pick up a plate if needed. Our server Teddy was nice and efficient. Generally, I wouldn't say the staff is particularly outgoing or friendly, but they do their jobs so you don't feel you're ignored.
