Bringing the Heat
Great food bursting with vibrant flavors; amazing cocktails; friendly and patient servers. Loved the Cumin style Lamb, stirfried prawns w asparagus, and pea shoots w garlic. Heat can be adjusted to your liking. Still feelin the burn!

Great food. The garlic sauce
Great food. The garlic sauce tofu wonderful. Just green beans w/o the meat were heavenly. Best Chinese restaurant around? Likely. The university city location has an upbeat, energetic vibe. Pleasant service though ragged at times. Good about explaining the spice levels to diners new to Han Dynasty. Will return.

This was my first visit to
This was my first visit to Han's University City location. The menu is the same as their Old City location. I was meeting someone for a business lunch and it was the perfect setting. We shared Wontons in Chicken Broth followed by Crisy Rice Style Fish. Both were excellent! Our server was very friendly and accomodating as well.

Han Dynasty works on a "family
Han Dynasty works on a "family style" and Sichuan (or spicy) method, which means that everything is labeled on a heat scale that they can change. Dishes are meant for sharing: one dish can feed two with leftovers, four well, and oh, the waiter said that one bowl of soup can easily fit a group up to 6. Yes, portions are big and Cheap! Me and my date ordered one noodle dish, one scallion pancakes, and one main all shared and we had plenty to take home. It's a great place to go for a group! We went to the one in University City, on Market. When it's nice out, they have outdoor seating with a fire pit. Service was very nice for a crowded friday.

I was referred to this restaurant from a student that I teach and I felt good about it immediately. The hostess was prompt, efficient and knowledgeable. She also made a recommendation of the double cooked fish that turned out to be perfectly suited to my taste. The servers, we had two, were friendly but professional. The food style was from my favorite culinary area in China, the Szechuan Provence and Han Dynasty did a wonderful job of capturing the excitement of the spicy flavor that is indicative of Szechuan. The server suggested trying some appetizers in order to better judge the heat levels of the food. There are indications on a scale of one to ten next to the menu item. Dan Dan Noodles which I substituted rice noodles along with so

This was my 4th time dining
This was my 4th time dining at this location of Han Dynasty and it is quickly becoming my favorite of the ones I have visited. The beer/cocktail list is a great addition to the already amazing food. Also it is very easy to park with the free garage and ample street parking. The interior of this location is also superior. Service was great and food was great!

Love it! Must have the Dan Dan Noodles!! Pretty much everything I've had is good except for the Hot Sauce Style. It isn't bad but it pales in comparison to the rest of the menu.

A great Chinese in the University area, and very high quality. Share the large portions with a group/

The food was incredible, with dishes unlike any other Chinese restaurant I've ever been to.

Splitting the bill
The only bummer about our dining experience was splitting the check. They will only split two cards and no more than that. A bit of an annoyance, but if you are aware of this in advance, then it shouldn't pose a problem.

fantastic.... as usal
This place is great! My boyfriend and I come here all the time. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get and the quality. Highly recommended!!!

Nice Place, Good Food
I think that says it all- service was friendly, food was good and the atmosphere was lively without being too noisy. Great place for a good dinner without spending too much money.
5/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
Much Better Than Manayunk Location
We've eaten at the Manayunk location, which is quite good. University City is like a completely different restaurant with the same menu. The vegetables were very fresh, food was outstanding, and service very attentive.
5/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is my 2nd time dining in this restaurant. Both dine in experiences were pleasant with great customer services. And most of all, I really enjoy their food. So good! Make sure you choose the level of spiciness before ordering your dish if you can't bare the spicy taste! Will definitely want to go back again with more friends.
5/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was outstanding, especially accommodating diverse dietary needs and describing clearly the spice levels of each dish. Service was impeccable; clear, professional, polite, etc. We had a brief working meeting at the restaurant (at a time of the evening that wasn't going to be busy) and the staff did not rush us and accommodated our every need. Couldn't be happier with the dinner.
5/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
As delicious as the food always tends to be at Han Dynasty, you should always be careful when ordering. They use a hotness scale from 1 - 10 to rate the spice of their food. Do not take that for granted! When they say 10, they are not kidding about it being the hottest thing imaginable. Honestly, the first thing I ever ordered there was the Pickled Chili Style fish (listed as a 5), and it took me 3 days and endless bowls of rice to even come close to finishing it (I never did). It tasted so good, though, that it was enough to push through the burn. Naturally, we asked them to make it a 3 the next time. Apparently, the Pickled Chili Style has a reputation for being spicier than listed. Who knew. Main point: AMAZING CHINESE FOOD.

The food ranged from good to very good. The waiter's recommendations were helpful and accurate, including the beer descriptions and recommendations.
The staff was friendly from the moment we entered to when we left.
5/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dan Dan noodles were excellent, just the right amount of heat as were the cucumbers - and I don't like cucumbers, but I couldn't stop eating these. Pay attention to the heat numbers - 5 is plenty for a good deal of heat.

Even the Non-Spicy Stuff is Good
Third time to Han Dynasty in a matter of 2 months or less! My girlfriend has a craving for it almost every week, and I always get why. As incredibly spicy as some of the food can be, that's what makes it so fun and delicious. Plus, we haven't had a bad waiter or waitress yet. We'll probably be back soon!
6/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Dan Dan Noodles and the cold noodles with chili oil were fabulous, as was the Ma Po Tofu and the Dry Pot style beef. Not numbingly spicy as some other Szechuan restaurants we have tried, it still has a nice kick but allows you to taste the outstanding flavors underneath. The different dishes all had a clearly distinct profile as well. Highly recommended.

Home of the Dan Dan Noodles
My absolute favorite thing to get here is their Dan Dan Noodles, something I'm sure everyone has said. It's definitely one of the menu's centerpieces. If noodles aren't your thing, there are plenty of other options. Han Dynasty is a Chinese restaurant with a flair for heat. It's for the adventurous (even though they have more mild dishes also!). If you go there for a challenge, you won't be let down. Definitely good for drinks, small groups, even families. It has a sort of high cuisine feel without the price. Check it out if you're a fan of Chinese food and a good time.

Been Back Too Many Times
This was our third visit to Han Dynasty in a matter of 2-3 weeks. While we are getting used to the intense spiciness of the food, we have also been trying some different things as well, and so far, everything has been great! As long as you can handle the spice, it'll be a fun experience. If you don't think you can handle it, the extremely friendly waiters can help!
6/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fantastic food, friendly service!
The food was fresh and well-balanced. The staff was extremely friendly. The waitress even gave my dad a hug for Father's Day! I love bringing my family here.
6/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Hot, Hot, Hot!
Han Dynasty never fails to impress! This was my first time at the University City location, and it is just as good as its brother in Old City. Everything we ordered was bursting with flavor; even though a lot of it was extremely spicy, it never ruined the experience. Our favorite dishes were the Hot Pot Fish, Dan Dan Noodles, and the spicy cucumbers (don't expect these to cool you down). Make sure to have a side of rice at all times if you don't want to overheat!
6/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Food, Great Service
We had a great time and a great meal here. Food and drinks were excellent, as was the service. Will definitely be coming back.
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
We chose the University City
We chose the University City location because we wanted to be able to talk comfortably with a small group on a Friday night and it fit our needs. All the dishes were delicious; this has been my experience every time I've been to any of the three Han Dynastys in the Philadelphia area. Of particular note is the dry pot fish.
7/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was my third visit to this location. Very high food quality - fresh and flavorful. The ginger shredded duck was fabulous. My dining partner has difficulty digesting high spice so she order the chicken lo mein which was very tasty.
7/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
So much delicious food.
University City Dining Days menu for $25 was amazing. Portions were enormous!! We had to take half of the food home!

Many friends had recommended Han Dynasty, and when we finally had a chance to check it out, it far surpassed our expectations. We sat at a table near the bar, being served by what appeared to be one of the bartenders for the evening. Being first timers, our server was helpful in advising us on how much food we should order, and spice levels for everything. He looked pretty busy at the bar, but still checked in on us enough that we felt taken care of. Being beer fans, we were not excited by the draft list, but easily found bottles that piqued our interest. The food was awesome, just enough to take home leftovers for lunch the next day. We were pleasantly surprised when the bill less than we had anticipated spending for how full we were.
7/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
and super good! but be prepared - for most people who are used to eating fairly spicy foot, dishes with a 6 or 7 score on the heat scale will probably be as much as you're used to getting. Be sure to mix and match with dishes listed as not spicy or with a 2-3 score (or take a spoonful or plain white rice) to give your tastebuds a rest.
Overall this was a really good and special meal.

Han Dynasty (Univeristy City)
Han Dynasty (Univeristy City) never disappoints. Make a reservation and get there early if you're going for lunch. It fills up quickly!
7/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went for lunch on a recommendation from a friend. Best food we had while visiting Philly!
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
This place lived up to the hype. Hands down. Great food and staff. I will most definitely will be going back!
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
I enjoy this place so much I was going at least twice a week for a moment there. I continue to spread the word to others just how good the food is by inviting them to lunch with me. The servers are great and will explain everything to you about spice levels, menu items and more! They are just the best! The food is full of favor and the portions are large enough to share. The spicy cucumbers and the Dan Dan noodles are my two favorite things to eat, but there is so much to try. You should definitely give it a try and you will most certainly love it!

Just great food
Being from New York it's just shocking to find such an amazing restaurant priced the way Han dynasty is. As an amateur restaurateur I'm glad I moved to Philly and just thrilled I found this location. It's great to have the quality of a fine dining restaurant without the pretentious attitude that tends to go along with it. The menu has a 1-10 scale to give an idea of how spicy the dish is which is not only helpful to the customer but indicates the level of expertise the chef has in his understanding of his dishes.
It's a plus to be able stop by in casual clothes when you're just not in the mood to get all dressed up for dinner, while maintaining the kind of ambience that would allow for a business casual experience for a fine date.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
I went to Han Dynasty for the first time last night and I had such a great time. My friend and I got there about 2 hours before our reservation and we were seated immediately. It was really busy for a Monday evening and the crowds were still coming in 3 hours when we left. We so relaxed and enjoyed our delicious food.It is so peaceful outside unlike the rest of University City which is kind of overcongested and crazed; it was a good break. The service was awesome. Our waiter was so kind and helpful and another waiter was also accommodating to when he was busy with a very large group indoors. I now know why my friend has been there 3 times since it opened a month ago, I'm definitely going back and calling for delivery!
8/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
a top Chinese restaurant.
Han dynasty is great for spicy very well prepared Chinese food served in portions to share. Food is brought from the kitchen as it is ready, so order items in groups you want to have together and then order more. It is great for three or more people who want to try several dishes.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
We're Han regulars. The food was fabulous as always. Nothing compares to these flavors. You will not find better Chinese in the city. Servings are made to share so bring friends. Yes, it's spicy but worth it. We'll be back again and again.

Good food but expected better
Very good food but I expected much better based on all the reviews. I think Margaret Kuo's restaurants are far superior.

When my fiance gets a craving for authentic Chinese food, this is where we go (even though it's a bit of a drive for us). And she's Chinese, do that says something.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
is accurate. This was my first time there, but definitely not my last. The food is delicious. Some intense yet somehow controlled heat, friendly and assertive staff, and a nice, calm layout (considering the dishes coming out of the kitchen at near lightning speed. I need more stomachs to try more things.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Different vibe than the Olde City location (haven't been to Olde City since they moved across the street). Very brightly lit. Quality meal. Only negative is that it's location isn't the best. Everything is happening on Walnut Street. Market is dead at night. Only university office buildings in the immediate vicinity. Overall, still a good experience.

University City Gem
Excellent food at a good price. Nice to have a lunch alternative in the area of 38th and Market, and right on Market St.

What an incredible meal!!!!
The food was just amazing. The spicing of the food, it was so great. You can ask for things mild to very hot, you can adjust to your taste. I am planning my next meal there. Do not forget to order the cucumbers in spicy sauce, OMG!

Not your typical Asian restaurant
The menu has a lot to offer. The Dan Dan Noodles were delicious. I don't like typically eggplant, but the eggplant appetizer dish we ordered was VERY tasty. Almost all the entrees come with a choice of chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, or tofu. We ordered four entrees for the entire group. The portions are served family style but they are not huge, just large enough to share. The quantity was just enough for our group. The restaurant is known for the spice level of its food. The spice level is selectable on most dishes, from 1 to 10, 10 being the highest. I like moderately spicy food. The highest level we ordered was 7. I didn't find it overpowering, but it built up to a slow burn as I continued to eat. I will definitely return!
