Had an awesome meal in Han Dynasty. Our initial server was great. Energetic and friendly. Dan Dan noodle is one of the best I've had so far. A little spicy for some, but once you've had a taste you just couldn't stop. Would've given this place 5 stars if it wasn't for the 2nd server we had. He was being rather rude and gave us a nasty look. Ruined the mood a little, otherwise it would've been perfect.

Have it your way!
My son, a chef in Philly, wanted to go here. So 4 of us made a reservation and went. I'm glad we made a reservation as the place is very small, and I'm sure the wait on a Saturday night would have been long.
They have awesome specialty drinks, and 3 of us had one.
We started with some apps so we could assess the heat level. The cucumbers, labeled a 7, were the most addictive thing I've eaten. Sweet, spicy, cold, and unreal. Couldn't stop. The dumplings were very good, and dan dan noodles excellent, but seemed to be spicier than the level given.
I got the spicy lamb, and did bring most of it home and poured the oil off. IT was amazing. Didn't have to chew the lamb! The others all got a variety of dishes, alo emazing, some hot, some not.

Always a favorite.
I can always count on Han Dynasty in Olde City for a great meal! Try the sesame noodles- they are a great and mild change from the delicious dan dan noodles.

Dan Dan Convert
I've lived in the neighborhood for about 3 years, but I've never been to Han Dynasty. This past Sunday, my boyfriend and I decided to check it out. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and made a great drink recommendation (Han Jiang--yum!) I ordered the dumplings in chili sauce and the Dan Dan noodles and my boyfriend ordered the spring rolls and the garlic style lamb. Everything came out quickly and was delicious! I especially liked that they will modify the spice level based on taste, but bring you the chili oil so you can adjust. We left satisfied and with leftovers. The price is pretty reasonable too--for two people with meals, apps, and cocktails, we spent less than $60 before tip. Will definitely be back!

We got the spicy cucumbers - best thing we had. the dan dan noodles - they dont look like much but they are delicious! the hot sauce style pork - this was HOT. and I am a south texas girl who puts hot sauce on everything. delicious but spicy --it was a 7 (on the heat levels) thank GOD we didnt get the level 10. also we had the dumplings in chili oil - also VERY good and spicy. this was very unique and I would definitely go back!

The food was fantastic! Our waiter was extremely helpful and made great recommendations.
Loved the Dan Dan Noodles! Can't wait to go back for more!

If you love spicy food and want to challenge your tolerance, go here. I especially like the double cooked fish and dry pepper style scallop dishes, spicy cucumbers and the dan dans. Service is always good and staff is friendly. Its also fun to go with a group and do the tasting menu, if you are feeling adventurous.
6/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food is always delicious. The servers are always knowledgable and helpful. We brought our foodie friend from DC and he loved it.
6/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
My husband and I loved this place! The food was gorgeous. We both ordered #10 hot pot dishes, cause we love heat and it was good! I actuallty could have handled hotter, but we are chili heads! Prices reasonable, staff efficient and friendly. Not only do we like hot spicy, but, we like tempature hot and this fit the bill. Will go back again.... and again! Can't wait to return!
6/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Consistently excellent food. Always fresh, gamut of tastes, intelligent and helpful wait-staff. Some of our party were not meat-eaters, and our server made an effort to bring other employees to the table with suggestions. Never had a bad dish there, and we eat there often. My only complaint is that the noise level is crushing--well beyond "energetic". Some effort should be made with either wall decor or otherwise to allow conversation.

Fantastic hot, spicy, delicious
Fantastic hot, spicy, delicious food - this is not your average Chinese restaurant by a long shot! Our server was very helpful in descrbing various dishes so we could order what would be a good choice for our table (some like hot and some not so much) - the noodles (?dan-dan) are a must! Be ready to be blown away - on a date, with friends, even with kids or a special occasion with a group - superb restarant and very reasonably priced - five stars all the way!

I've read a lot of reviews from folks who think Han Dynasty has the best Chinese cuisine in the City. I had the Dry Pepper Pot shrimp and my wife had the Garlic Style lamb. We also had spring rolls and wontons in chili oil. Everything was good. I don't know that I'm able to call it the best Chinese in the City, as I could compare it to a family favorite Sang Kee over in Chinatown that has great food but more reasonable prices. We both said we'd go back, but were not blown away.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
great place to eat, schezuan style, if you like it hot get here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing food, weird service
Food was amazing, flavors that are hard if not impossible to find elsewhere in the city. Service was weird. My husband ordered the special, but I am assuming the waiter forgot to put it in because we had finished all of the other food before his dish came out and we ended up canceling the special that we really wanted to try. Also, the waiter let us know that he made our drinks (?) and it was the first time he had made them so he hoped they were ok (??).
If the above doesn't bother you, and it shouldn't because the food makes it worth it, than I would suggest you definitely try Han Dynasty . . . just make sure that your food gets to your table!

Solid Chinese food
This is pretty decent Chinese food. It's much better than standard take-out. It's supposedly more authentic. It seems it, although I have yet to actually visit China. Many dishes are spicy by default, and they don't fool around with the spiciness. They have a well-marked, simple 10-point spiciness scale, though. It's simple and they can dial down the spice for most (all?) dishes. I'm not sure I'd quite rate this foodie-level Chinese, but it's good and I'd go again. Their cocktails are excellent. The service was spotty, though. We had quite some trouble getting our check, and then getting it back to sign. Otherwise the server was friendly and helpful.

I love this place!
I have never been disappointed when eating at Han Dynasty. I believe they are moving soon (just down the block), which I hear will give them some more space and be nicer. Can't wait to see it!
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Hotter than Exton!
I'd read on Yelp that the Old City location was spicier than the others, and while I heeded that advice for my entree (dry hot pepper chicken - I'm OBSESSED), I forgot to for our appetizers (Dan Dan Noodles and Dumplings in Chili Oil). It almost took SOME of the pleasure away from the meal because I needed to follow every delicious bite with a long swig of water and beer. Next time, I'll ask them to ratchet down the heat (which they are happy to do). I usually go to the Han Dynasty in Exton. While the food is just incredible at both, the ambiance and service in Old City are infinitely better. The server informed us that they are moving to a new location across the street soon. Looking forward to trying that one, too!
7/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food but glad they are moving
I really like the food but good luck having a conversation while you're eating! It is sooo hard to hear in there -- hopefully the new location will solve that problem. I love the Dan Dan Noodles -- it is the only thing I get when I am there -- but I have tasted others dishes and they are very good. The chicken and cashews are excellent. Highly recommend if the new location solves the acoustic problem.

Great for Heat Lovers
Delicious food, especially if you love spicy dishes. We had the spicy crispy cucumber (I could eat the whole bowl), which is both spicy and refreshing at the same time. We also had the dan dan noodles, which were slightly greasy but delicious in a late night binge sort of way. Since we weren't feeling insanely masochistic, we had the less-spicy garlic chicken for our main dish, which was also good but not as satisfying as the cucumber and noodles. For drinks we each had one of the shandy nasties. Very refreshing. Overall a great and reasonably priced dinner. Make sure you make a reservation. We made ours for 7:30 pm on a Friday and they were telling walk-ins it would be a 45-minute wait.
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great experience. Wonderful service. Dan Dan noodles were just as advertised. Want to try other locations soon.

Best Chinese food in Philadelphia
We have eaten at Han many many times and it never fails to delight. On this occasion we tried something new, cabbage with peppers. It was amazing! We also visit the Han in west Philadelphia but could not get a reservation for this date. My son lives in San Francisco and is hoping Han will appear there soon so he can introduce all his west coast friends to Dan Dan Noodles.
7/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything is delicious. Super spicy and great. I recommend the dumplings, Dan Dan noodles and eggplant entree. Serious about the dumplings and eggplant dish.

Most Frequented Restaurant!
I love Han - and bounce between Manayunk and Old City, depending on where I'm at. Dan Dan Noodles (minus pork, I'm veg) and Tofu Hot Sauce Style are my go-to's. Unbelievable food, you can't get this cuisine just anywhere, this is one of my top 5 restaurants in Philadelphia. It's awesome.
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good if you like spicy
We like this place a lot even though its no longer a BYOB. We prefer the spicy appetizers over the entrees but most items are good. We always get the dan-dan noodles and the dumplings in chili oil, then try a different entree or 2.
warning - If its your first time here.....do not assume you can eat something rated a '10' on the spicy scale...go with 5 to 7 tops or you won't be able to eat it.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dumplings, noodles, entrees great
Fantastic, spicy, really hit the spot. Note: don't get the rabbit unless you're into eating skeletons...there were more (tiny, irritating, cumbersome) bones than meat, and it was way to much work to try and fish them out of each bite. Some interesting cocktails that taste good, if a little week.
8/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our waiter helped us choose our food and he was spot on. The dishes were great and interesting.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food is super excellent
The crispy rice dish was just OK. Hot pot was RIDICULOUSLY hot but the sweaty and nose-running husbands inhaled the whole thing with delight. Dan dan noodles are FANTASTIC and my favorite thing is one of the side dishes. The spicy crispy cucumbers are a MUST HAVE. I even took home the leftover sauce to cut up some cucumbers and marinate my own!!! I love this place...

The food at this Old City
The food at this Old City treasure was absolutely outstanding.

Heat won't disappoint
Finally, a place that adds enough heat to food. Most Asian places say their food's hot, this place delivers. Dan noodles are great, but skip the duck unless you like sucking meat off of lots of tiny bones. Too much work, and there are plenty of other selections that do the trick although the tea smoke does come through. Service could leave a little to be desired. Waiter very informative, but then would disappear. Had to wait 10 minutes for second beers.

Food was great, service was
Food was great, service was very fast. We were placed at a someone cramped table but other than that it was a fantastic experience. When they say things are spicy they are not kidding around!
8/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food- just be careful about the spice level!

The food was excellent! From another review on this website, I made sure to let the waitress know I am allergic to MSG. Dan Dan noodles are a revelation (extremely spicy, but awesome!)

Impress your friends
Whenever we are dining out with friends who rely on us to pick the restaurant, this is one of the two places we go! Our dining companions range from the younger set - in their 20s - to an older set - in their 50s. They talk about the excellent food for weeks, even months after. We love Han Dynasty and can't wait until they move in to their new, bigger, digs!
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
My husband and I went to Han Dynasty at an odd time (3 in the afternoon) so it was quiet but everything we ate was delicious. We read that you should try the Dan dan noodles and they were incredible. We also had the dumplings and the chicken with garlic sauce. Everything here is spicy but you can ask for less spice. This restaurant is fantastic, not your regular Chinese take out. Also, we hear that they will be moving to a new space soon.

Waiting for the new location
As always Han is personable. The food was great, and I can not wait to dine in his new establishment.
10/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dairy Free Dining
Han's is a great restaurant. I've been here a few times; they recently moved across the street to a more spacious building. The food and the atmosphere are both great, but what I enjoy the most is that there are no dairy products used and I can order anything off the menu. This is a relief because I am allergic to dairy.

(10) The cake the keeps on giving
We celebrated my sister's birthday here since she's never been to Han Dynasty. I've been a regular at their "hole in the wall" spot just down the street from the new location. The food never disappoints - Dandan Noodles, Twice Cooked Fish, Cucumber salad, Scallion beef. You name it, food has always been excellent. The service this time seems friendlier too. The new location is a beautiful trendy space (except for those 4 flat screen TVs at the bar disturbs the feng shui of the restaurant). Another bday celebrant passed on their amazing chocolate cake leftover to us. We then passed it to another celebrant. Everyone celebrated well.

Food was really good.
Service was ok. I felt at times rushed. The servers would run by and drop plates on the tables. Plates also came out in stages.
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Love love love
If you have a spicy, tasty love for Asian food try it. They have a spice level for all types.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
The Dan Dan noodles are easily the best item on the menu.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
Hot and Spicy
Food was definitely top notch. Service not the greatest... Could have used an explanation of the numbering system for the heat/spice level of the dishes. With that said, and now that we know, we will be back - drink prices are very reasonable to boot and the free, secure phone charging station a nice touch.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Our go to favorite Asian
They specialize in spice but I ask that they tone it down as I am a light weight. The flavors are so different and really delicious. Our personal favorites are eggplant in garlic sauce and twice cooked fish....but everything is really good. They moved to a new location up the street and it is so much nicer atmosphere. So now you have both ambience and good food!
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
Food was great! Everything is spicy , if you can't handle moderate to heavy spice level ask for #1 -2.
We got everything at level 5, it was good but I would have liked it a tad milder.

Han Dynasty in Old City
Han Dynasty in Old City has always had great food, wonderful service and consistent quality at a great price. Now it is beautiful as well. Han Dynasty moved across Chestnut Street to a fabulous space. They have taken advantage of a grand old building with high ceilings and tons or architectural detail that is a treat to be in. Not only do you have plenty of elbow room, it is also quiet enough to hold an easy conversation - a real plus in the dining world today.
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
good Chinesse Restaurant
We were not disappointed in Han Dynasty! The food was very good, but spicy. If you like spicy food, go with the number 6 dishes. If not, chose the number 3 items on the menu. We had a great waiter named John, and the food service was excellent. We didn't have to wait very long at all for our courses.
Two negatives - They don't have brown rice and they have paper napkins not cloth napkins. A restaurant at this very beautiful restaurant should not be serving their patrons with paper napkins. John, our waiter, did tell us that they probably will be having brown rice as an option soon. When they do, we'll be back.
11/19/2013 4:00:00 PM
excellent Szechuan food!
Great high-ceilinged space, not too closely packed, so not too noisy. Real plus that they are willing to adjust the spice levels as spicy tends to be REALLY spicy at Han. We had an outstanding waiter -- Ryan -- who was very helpful both with food choices and beer choices. Right on target. We look forward to a return visit!
12/2/2013 4:00:00 PM
Good variety and plenty of spicy (or not) options. An excellent dinner!
12/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
just a great place to share food
but things can be very spicy. Our group loved it. Fast and friendly service on a Friday early evening before a play. We all agreed we would return happily (loved the classic cocktails)

Weekly Visits to Han Dynasty
My good friend and I have weekly dinners here because of the incredible food and the fantastic service. We always have great servers who deliver fantastic food. This week, on Friday the 13th, our service was exceptionally great. Joseph took the time to speak with us, joke around, give recommendations on beer and the like. Thanks for Joseph and dandan noodles!

Great Post-Game Meal
After braving the snow and cold temperatures at the Army/Navy game, we stopped in to Han Dynasty for dinner. The food was hot, spicy and delicious, just what we needed to warm up. Although our reservation wasn't until 8:15, we got to the restaurant at 7pm and they seated us immediately. Both the food and service was great. As others have noted, the Dan Dan noodles were very good as were the wontons in chilly oil. You can adjust the heat level in every dish. I went for the hot pot, a 10, and it did not dissapoint. I love spicy food and this was just the right spicy that I was looking for.
