everything was pretty good
went here on 4th of july and had several things on the menu. i would probably stay away from their cocktales....but i only tried one so maybe it was just the one that i tried. service, timing, food were all ok. they kind of pack people in there so be prepared to sit close to nearby tables.

My wife and I came here for dinner - delicious local cuisine, very affordable prices, and service was fantastic. We got the Mango Swai and Eggplant Curry, which were both delicious! Their tiki drinks menu was also great - tried the Shwedagon, which was really good. In and out of the restaurant in an hour...on a Friday night, which we couldn't believe. Definitely coming back here again since the menu had so many interesting options. Highly highly recommend!

Good solid restaurant
This is a small restaurant with somewhat crowded seating and the noise level is quite high as a result. Food is good and authentic and they have a specialty drinks list. Rainbow salad is always a good choice as was the catfish, although there were bones a plenty. Veggie kabat was very tasty and coconut rice goes well with it. Noodle dishes are also quite good. Service is great and the owners are very attentive. You must have a reservation and all your party must be present. We have been several times and would go again. Just wish they had more space.

Rangoon Ruby provided a great dining experience, helpful a and attentive wait staff, management on site interacting with the customers, and a line out the door to give testament to its popularity. The food was superb, prepared to whatever degree of spiciness we requested and the desserts could not be passed up.

It's hard to go wrong here. The curries are tasty, the appetizers are always fun, and the rotating draft beer keeps you guessing.

Tasty Burmese & Attentive Service
An enjoyable experience with an attentive waiter. This was our 2nd visit. Our 1st was happy hour, and we sat at the bar & ordered from the limited menu. Our 2nd visit we sat at a table. The menu is well laid out, and 3 of us had 2 appetizers, lettuce wraps & fried tofu, and 3 dinner dishes: Chicken Kebat, Sesame Beef, and Vegetable Eggplant & Garlic, with a side of plain Garlic Noodles. All was enjoyed. Favorite was the Chicken Kebat over the Garlic Noodles! Two things to watch: fried food (the tofu starter & beef were both deep fried), and cloyingly sweet cocktails. They do have beer on tap & local beers Palo Alto Brewing Co. and Devils Canyon. We will all definitely go back...soon. I'm craving the chicken & garlic noodles as I write this!

The food does not disappoint . Food might take a while to come , but in general the service was pretty good. They also accommodate various requests. Do make sure to try their salads. Love them

Very good food and service in spite of huge crowds and small space. It's obvious someone capable is in charge.

Excellent Burmese Food
For my wife's birthday, my daughter and I took my wife to Rangoon Ruby's. The food was excellent, and isn't that the most important thing about a restaurant? The ambience was very good as they did a nice job redecorating this place, which has been a number of different restaurants over the years. The place was noisy, especially early in the evening (7:30). Service was attentive. We especially enjoyed the mango salad and the Garlic, Shrimp & Eggplant.
7/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Burmese food is a fascinating cuisine of familiar ingredients combined in novel ways (at least to this reviewer, who's used to Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Singaporean, Indian). Everything I've had at Rangoon Ruby is really tasty, and now that they have a full bar, they have great tropical drinks to match. It can be very busy, but with a little planning ahead you can get a reservation.

Amazing Tea leaf salad, samosa
Amazing Tea leaf salad, samosa salad and samosa soup!!!
7/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Highlights were lettuce wrap chicken, pad thai-like noodles, and delicious broccoli sauteed in garlic. Delicious coconut water served in the shell - fun. Attentive and thoughtful staff.

Very tasty dining
Loved the tea leaf salad--like everyone says, it was great. The mango chicken was so-so. Gets very noisy, so come when it opens if you want to talk.

interesting and unusual menu
We really enjoy the Burmese flavors. They are somewhere between Thai and Chinese. The tea leaf salad is unique in our experience and quite delicious. There are many terrific curries and other dishes. However, there are a few soft spots. On our most recent outing just a few days ago, we found the burmese-indian rice to be dry and not very flavorful. The sticky rice dessert wasn't pleasing for either of us. Seemingly well prepared but not to either of our tastes. But don't let these few gripes deter you. Overall, you'll love the food and enjoy the experience.

Authenticity Well Served
Four of us took our "maiden voyage" to Burma/Myanamar and will return. An attentive server set the scene, deftly responding to our queries on each course, including the wine list. Memorable offerings included both the Mango salad and Teal Leaf salad (if you order both, taste the Mango salad first ), the Palata appetizer, the Lamb Kabat and Pumpkin Salmon Stew.

Great food for a decent price. The tablecloths are cloth, and the staff were very friendly.
8/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've only had Burmese once prior and it was also my group's first time trying it. Everything we ordered was amazing! The standout dishes for me were the Palatta, Tea Leaf Salad, Mango Chicken, and Garlic Shrimp Eggplant. I highly recommend this place!

food was good together for the service. I just felt I was being rushed to leave even if I was still finishing my dessert and tea by one of the floor managers.

First time and we'll be back
Wonderful place with wonderful food! There is definitely something for everyone's palate. Hope to go back soon!

Excellent new place in Palo Alto
Not many Burmese restaurants in the Bay Area. This one is terrific, with excellent sevice, ambiance, and food. Not cheap, however. We spent $45 for food & another $45 for wine.

Dining with 3 girlfriends on Friday night - SOOO glad we booked a table as this place had a line out the door all during our meal. The food was "spectacular" from the yellow tofu appetizer to the tealeaf salad to the fiery bean and tofu main course (we were all eating vegetarian just to mention some of the great dishes we shared). The coconut rice was a little dry and the pumpkin stew we all agreed was our least favorite: needed some more flavor. It's a little crowded for my taste but the wait staff were friendly and well informed (he just forgot to pour the wine equitably!). I look forward to eating here again.

Taste of Burmese Cuisine
Make sure you make a reservation as this is a hotspot in the evening. I've never had any Burmese food before but it's very influenced by Thai and Indian cuisine so there are very similar dishes on the menu. Food is served family style and almost all beverages come with an umbrella on the side for that tropical feel. :)
8/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
friendly and efficient service
Good but not great food - it is fusion - in other words the flavors are not authentic but have been Americanized. Still, a nice break from the rest of the downtown PA scene.
They do have great service - the waiters are friendly, attentive, and they get you in and out quickly. It is very popular and it fills up fast, so reservations are a must.

Great food, busy spot
We enjoyed our dinner here. Food was great. Service was pleasant. I thought the waiter could have suggested dishes to our group who was struggling to narrow down our selections on a very large menu. But what we ordered we ended up loving, so it all worked out. The pumpkin pork stew was excellent, as was the tea leaf salad. Also enjoyed the garlic noodles with roasted duck! The noodles were not greasy at all, but had a nice flavor and generous portion of shredded duck mixed in. I would order this again. Highly recommend making a reservation. We arrived early and it was fine, but by like 6:15 it was packed.

A Dining pleasure!!
I came here with a party of 6 plus a newborn. I should have counted the baby ! the table reserved for us would have made the baby seat awkward or in the way of patrons and waitstaff. They did their best to accommodate us and even moved us to a better location! Everyone in our party was comfortable and we (including the baby) had a wonderful evening. One person in our party is a vegan and our waiter Marco made excellent suggestions that were delicious.Five star service,5 star food, and a five star experience!!

Great food and good suggestions from the wait staff.

Best restaurant in downtown PA
Consistently great. Usually crowded with people waiting outside. Bartenders are very friendly. Everything we've ordered across three visits is outstanding. Familiar ingredients in unusual (to people not used to Burmese cooking) combinations.

go for it
food was good, tea leaf salad very good, nice soup, great coconut rice!
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great as usual.
Got a great table for an early business lunch with a frequent foodie colleague who's visit was his first. He was pleased and plans to return. Quiet enough for a work conversation, but lively enough not to be dull. Mango salad and kebat were exactly the same as always--visual and taste perfection. Attentive but unobtrusive service, an example is the presentation of all salads as ingredients grouped for view, then combined at the table. Good selection of beers from two local breweries. Remains a favorite, here in PA or San Carlos on Laurel across from Peets. (Note for dinner: full bar in PA, only. Across from Aquarius Theater and parking.)

Rangoon Ruby is a GEM
Food is fantastic. Decor is unique and elegant yet fun. Service has some kinks to work out, which they will as the overall caliber of this treasure is extremely high. LOVE it here. Looking forward to returning within the month.

One of the 2 best restaurants in downtown Palo Alto.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Would definitely go again!
It is Burma Superstar comparable, and with better service!
I enjoyed the ambience, the food was delicious and just the right portion, and the servers were very accommodating.
I'm definitely bringing more friends to this restaurant when I visit Palo Alto.

Love this place
Have been to Rangoon Ruby many times - both to dine in and for take out. The dishes are consistently good with great flavor. My favorites are the Samosa Soup, Tea Leaf Salad, the Fiery Tofu/Vegetables and the Ruby String Beans. The owners are really hospitable too.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Almost every dish was superb.
Except for the Pumpkin stew with Salmon, we loved every dish. Tea leaf salad was great. Palata was OK, nothing special. Garlic Noodles was made with flat noodles (unlike in Vietnamese restaurants) and was super garlicky - YUM. Lemongrass chicken also very good. I am a huge pumpkin fan in curries, but this one was very thin and the salmon did not have a good rich flavor.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is out of this world
Amazing flavors. The tea leaf salad and calamari appetizers are a must to sample. I have not been disappointed by anything on their menu. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Great Burmese food
Rangoon Ruby has great food (don't miss the tea leaf salad) great service (very attentive and gracious). Tables are relatively close together. Too any people want to eat here!! The hostess greets her guests with warm welcomes. It is always a pleasure and has become one of our favorites.

food was good and different.
food was good and different. Unique flavors like the tea leaf salad. But the portions are relatively small for the price.

Great Introduction to Burmese Food
This was our first time dining at Rangoon Ruby. The menu looked intriguing, even to my foodie cousin with lots of experience with south Asian food. The first time we tried to eat here, we had no reservations and there was a very long wait -- 45 minutes or more. This time we made a reservation and were seated promptly at a corner window table. The food which was mostly new to us was well explained on the menu and our server was very helpful in answering our questions and recommending what would go well together. The food was all exquisitely presented and prepared. I recommend the tea leaf salad (enough for the three of us to share), the lemongrass chicken, and the sooji for dessert. The beer drinkers in our group also raved about the beers.

Very good food for a generally reasonable price. They serve generous portion, so that we had enough food left to make two additional meals at home.

Food was great and the selection were good. Spice doesn't sit well with my stomach, but I just had the waiter lessen the spice and/or eliminate altogether and it came out great.

We loved this restaurant. The food was flavorful. The atmosphere was lively. We will be back!

Delicious Burmese Cuisine
What a great spot - another delicious Palo Alto establishment. Went there with a group of girlfriend's recently - the mango shrimp was superb - though hard to choose as so much variety - glad girlfriends chose different meals so I could sample.. will go back very soon - this time with husband. Cocktails were sublime.

This time I had the Burmese chicken salad. Wow. Delicious.
The samosas are a little too fried, but tasty.
Very lovely interior light and feel.

Exquisite Burmese Food
We had never had Burmese food before but were encouraged to try it by a visiting cousin. We loved everything about our visit and have added Rangoon Ruby to our list of favorite local restaurants. The food is delicious, attractively served, and in reasonably-sized portions, neither too large or too small. The portions work well whether you are sharing among all the diners at your table, or whether you prefer to order one thing and keep it all to yourself.
Particularly outstanding dishes are the tea leaf salad, lemongrass chicken, and the pumpkin chicken stew. The beer connoisseurs in our party were also impressed by the selection of beers that complemented the food.
Be sure to make a reservation since they seem to be full all the time.
