When looking for a restaurant
When looking for a restaurant for my upcoming birthday dinner I went to Open Table and just looked around for what was available. I decided to try Banana Leaves because the menu looked good and the prices were very reasonable, but the restaurant was so much more! The decorations are really cool and the ambiance is very relaxed and casual, perfect for me and my large group of friends. All of the food was great, everyone loved their dishes and they came out quickly and fresh. The menu has a great variety of appetizers, meat, and noodle and rice dishes. I would definitely go back!

Just finished a wonderful meal at Banana Leaves Asian Restaurant. Have been in DC for a week and this was one of our favorite meals out. A great, varied menu and we tried a little of everything. We dined with our 3 kids and had the seaweed salad (good but typical), hot/sour soup & egg drop (yum), Malaysian red curry (excellent), Thai Fried Rice (excellent), assorted nigiri sushi (good), and low mein noodles (excellent). We also had the sticky rice with mango for dessert and found it to be some of the best we've ever had. No gloppy mess, instead, a steamed banana leaf filled with sticky warm rice with sweet slices of mango on the side. All of this food, plus two cocktails and tea for the kids for a very reasonable price.

A little unresponsive
When my friend and I arrived, we asked for a quiet table where we could speak privately. Although some quiet, more private tables were available, the hostess insisted on our taking a two-top in the middle of a row of two-tops along a wall. Also, it was very difficult to get our server's attention throughout the meal. On the other hand the food was very good.

I would go back...for sure!
We had a wonderful dinner! My husband and our two kids enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. We sat in the front window table - which was awesome. Our server was exceptional. We thought the dinner was a reasonable price for a delicious dinner.

Outstanding Asian food
The restaurant is tucked away among storefronts. The downstairs is a bar, and the restaurant is upstairs. We were seated immediately by friendly staff. The menu is extensive, spanning much of the Asian cuisines. I had the Banana Leaf Rice, and my wife had the eggplant. Both were absolutely outstanding. We shared a fried banana for dessert -- a banana covered by a wonton wrapper and fried. It was very good, although I didn't think the crushed peanuts on top quite fit in. The waitress was very friendly and attentive, without being intrusive. We felt the prices were very reasonable, given the quality of the food. Our reservation was fairly early in the evening, and it was quiet when we arrived, but the noise level was increasing as we finished

My Favorite Asian Restaurant in DC
My friend and I got the Scallion pancakes, delicious. We also share the Eggplant dish and the Honey Peanut Noodles, both very nice . It was a very pleasant diner.

That's what it's all about, right? The restaurant was nice and the menu was creative. Most importantly, though, everything was delicious!

exceptional for DC
Very nice place with interesting, varied menu and reasonable prices with generous servings....rare in this over hyped and over priced city.

Excellent Service and Food
First time eating there, and recommendations by knowledgeable waiter were fabulous.
The only issue we had was the parking, which was tough to find - but it's worth the trouble.

Met our modest expectations
Didn't know really what to expect with BLAR, but hoped that the food would be savory for the reasonable price point and it did not disappoint. The wait staff were very nice and attentive and the menu had enough variety to keep us happy.

I decided to have dinner at the Banana Leaves Asian Restaurant with some friends, based on the positive reviews read on the pen table website. And, I was not disappointed. The service and food provided at the Banana Leaves Asian Restaurant were excellent!

This was my first visit and it was an absolute great experience! We were greeted at the door (upon entrance), escorted to our table, and was waited on promptly. Food was really good and served appropriately. Waitress gets an A+ (she really enhanced the mood setting it for a nice, fun, and eventful evening). Overall great experience and would recommend to friends and co-workers.

We will be back to Banana Leaves
Our whole family loved Banana Leaves Asian Restaurant and Sushi Bar, our first time there. We went on a Wednesday for dinner. Our server was outstanding: both funny and competent. The kitchen was fast (though only a few tables were occupied, so not much of a test). The 7 of us of all ages trusted his recommendations and we were rewarded. Between us we probably ordered 10 items, all outstanding: Banana Leaf Rice (mine with chicken), Chicken Pad Thai, Calamari (extremely tender, flavor), Pork Dumplings (pan fried), Mango sticky rice with coconut. Beer selection is weak as in most Asian restaurants, but that didn't offset all the excellent dishes. Parking on the street is limited until 6:30pm weekdays, or use Washington Hilton nearby.

Had a great dinner
Service was enthusiastic and helpful, very friendly. Food was above average for the cuisine type. Crispy tangerine peel, baba curry were great. Saketini and WooWoo cocktails were excellent. Apps were scallion pancakes and indian pancakes, both were delicious. If i come to DC for asian cuisine again, this is the place.

When you have two families dining and six children, it's hard to find great food, relatively well priced, and establishments that will be friendly towards kids (3-9yrs). It helps that our kids love Asian food, so this was great food, and great service and great attitude towards our kids, valued customers too often ignored;)

The staff was knowledgeable and helpful with recommending and making dishes vegetarian friendly.

I have wanted to try this restaurant for years but I didn't know anyone who had eaten there and was a bit skeptical about how good the food would be. Well, now I am kicking myself that I didn't try it sooner. The food was very good and the service was friendly. We ordered 2 of the grilled dishes and enjoyed them both. There is upstairs seating but we sat downstairs. Prices are reasonable and food is delicious! Don't wait as long as I did to experience this Pan-Asian delight.

Great service, bad order
I enjoyed coming here and people love coming to this place.i ordered the honey peanut noodles and I was disappointed as the taste and texture were average at best. I'd try another dish and come back though. Service was great.

Excellent food and service!
We had a large party (13) for a birthday and we had excellent service! The staff was attentive and patient. The food was amazing! They brought ice cream and sang happy birthday to the birthday girl. We will definitely be back!

I booked solely on Open Table reviews and wasn't disappointed! From the outside it doesn't seem like much - inside is small and by 7:30 on Friday night it was packed! We were seated promptly and the waiter was very attentive. Appetizers - Won ton soup, fried pork dumplings, spring rolls and assorted sushi - all were very good. For the main course we had the grilled honey peanut chicken - very good, the kung pao chicken - also very good and some pork fried rice. All the food was presented very nicely and even though we ordered alot of food, it wasn't heavy or filling. My only critique is that most of the food was served at a lukewarm temperature. It could be served just a bit warmer. Highly recommend!

We visited on the day after thanksgiving whilst on vacation from the UK. Excellent restaurant near to our hotel in DuPont circle. Staff were very friendly. Good choice on the menu. We will probably go again before we return home but next time might sit upstairs
