Very energetic restaurant, centrally located in Los Olivos. Great lamb with delicious sauce. Outstanding calamari appetizer. Probably best we have ever had. Just spicy enough but extremely light tasting.
Two adjoining tables were couples celebrating their anniversary as were we. Server brought each of us a wonderful complementary desert. Great service as well.
Atmosphere is very friendly.

Brothers Restaurant is a Home Run
My wife and I chose Sides, Hardware and Shoes for our Anniversary celebration while staying in Santa Ynez due to it's great reviews, proximity and reputation of the chefs.
We were NOT disappointed. The food and service were great. The restaurant was a little noisy but that was due to boisterous graduation parties and lots of happy diners. We visited on a Friday night and were happy that we had made a reservation. My wife enjoyed the Scottish Salmon and I the Pork Loin Chop. If you are in the neighborhood-stop by you will not be disappointed.

dinner vs breakfast
Our experience was good, made better by our server Diane. Replaced an appetizer without question, solid recommendations and while very busy still met our needs in a timely and friendly manner. The dinner menu is a bit limited in items I would choose, with only a top sirloin steak in the steak department. I ended up ordering the salmon which was quite good. I haven't had breakfast here but I've heard that is really good. Bottom line is yes I'll go back once in awhile but if I'm looking for a great rib eye, prime rib or filet I'll have to go elsewhere.

Farm-to-table comfort with a smile
We had an exceptional and low-key dinner here this week. It was bustling for a Wednesday and our server was still very attentive. She was well-informed about her menu and happy to ask the chef about the ingredients if she didn't know. Everything was cooked perfectly, from the slab bacon and calamari appetizers, to the salmon and fried chicken entrees. The desserts were equally thoughtful, tasty and fresh- when was the last time you had a fresh caramel sauce on a sundae bowl! Highly recommend Sides and can't to try their new restaurant when it opens!

My favorite restaurant in
My favorite restaurant in the Santa Ynez Valley. Consistently good food, top notch service in a restored old hardware store in Los Olivos. A perfect dinner after a day or wine tasting.

Amazing Service and Food
The service here is beyond special and the food is just amazing!

Must go again
The best dinner I've had in the Valley! Just delicious!! Noise level was a bit high.....but only because everyone was having such a good time.

Pork Chop Heaven
If you enjoy great food and wine, Sides Hardware and Shoes is a must if you are in the area. Wine list is extensive and very reasonable. Appetizers great. The pork chop will have you talking about. It days later - at least we were. Staff helpful and made good suggestions.

Gotta have the Bacon
Arrrived late into Los Olivos after a four and a half hour drive from Orange County. So glad Sides was on Open Table. We were seated promptly. I had read about the fabulous bacon for breakfast and lunch, but wasn't expecting it for dinner. They were offering a deconstructed panzanella appetizer. The star was the bacon which was left whole not cut up with peaches and croutons on top. Wow!. My husband had the chilled pea soup for his starter. It was so creamy and so good. As entrees we had trout and spaghetti bolognese. What a beautiful ragout. Gelato for dessert. Restuarant offers a full service bar and wine on tap (from barrels). Must go.

Go to Sides
Another wonderful meal in Los Olivos, this time at Sides. Duck was fantastic, and a very huge portion. Filet melted in your mouth. They serve a number of local wines by the glass/liter, direct from the barrel and at reasonable prices.

While travelling, we were very saddened to find a favorite tavern had closed but the owners had opened another restaurant. so cautiously we booked a reservation and are we glad that we did. Nice to see that some of the same staff was there and the same excellent quality. Our waitress Dianne was delightful. The food was excellent. My mouth is watering as I remember the delicious sauce on the Top Sirloin as I write this. The restaurant filled quickly and we could see why. We will definitely be returning on our next trip through Los Olivos.

Fun place in Los Olvos
This was a great place for casual dining. The brussel sprouts were to die for. There is a very high noise level here, so I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic evening. The food and service was great.

Unpretentious gem in Los Olivos
Reasonable prices, nice staff, great food - what more do you want? We had the peach panzanella with bacon, lump crab with mango and avocado and lamb sirloin with goat cheese gnocchi - all terrific.

delicious gem in los olivos
Food superseded our expectations. Excellent choices of entrees, even though menu was very small. Food prepared and served with fresh local ingredients delivered exactly as requested. Lamb loin was generous portion crisp on outside and juicy rare oozing with flavor. Pork chop w apricots mmmmm...crostada divine. Oooh Brussels sprouts appetizer scrumptious. See for yourself!
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
I spent $50.00 including tip for salmon and a local salad. Salad was wonderful. Great fresh and tangy dijon vinagrette. Salmon was cooked perfectly. It was served on a bed of mashed potatoes which were unremarkable but the gravy was fantastic. It must have been a demi glaze with burgandy and just a little sweet. If there had been a few more of the sauteed carrots I would have enjoyed it more. Bread was on the table with butter. Great bread. Iced tea was my drink and it was good only they never refilled the ice in my glass and as I had my drink refreshed it got warm. I was surprised no one noticed they were filling an iced tea glass without ice. The services was attentive without being annoying.

No Problem taking Sides
Referred to this Los Olivos restaurant by Succulent Café in Solvang (great spot) since Succulent closed for renovations. For 30th Anvsry we were in search of a little culinary magic and SH&S did not disappoint. Pork belly Aptzr with peaches & white balsamic infused croutons nice starter, but not a revelation. Main course solid with high marks to brined pork chop (fantatstic) with mash, as well as lamb sirloin paired with vegie and tasty reduction (my favorite). "Very popular" fried chicken also brined made meat moist/flavorful, but needed side of gravy; pass on chicken. Overpriced wine list with less than stellar selections for the $$, but for $40 try their temranillo/grenache blend; great value.

WE had an excellent dinner celebrating her birthday. The food was great! Really nice experience.
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Was a little adamant in trying this restaurant due to the fact of a not-so-good experience with the former brother's restaurant, but it was worth trying . The wait staff was very attentive, very nice too. The Brussels sprouts were yummy, and the bacon with arugula and peaches is a must to try. Fried chicken was tender, the mashed potatoes texture and flavor was great. To finish it we tried 3 scoops of ice cream which was a palate cleanser! Not to forget their wine list is reasonable and being there at the wine country makes it more special. Will definitely go back again when we visit Los Olivis.

Don't pass it up!
Appetizer was fried brussels sprouts----outstanding. Salmon was cooked to perfection. Always a very interesting menu. We never pass up the Brothers Restaurant at Sides Hardware.

What a great place, no sign out front, but easy enough to find. We had such a great time, staff was awesome! Food was fantastic!, get the bacon burger....!!

Perfect size, perfect combos, left us feeling satisfied and like we'd found a unique place.

We were a group of 5 and upon arrival (we had an early reservation: 5:30pm) we delighted in the look and ambiance. At that early hour, there wasn't the crowd that was there later. We saw burgers served and when we asked, a burger menu was produced. 4 of the 5 ordered burgers, which were thoroughly enjoyed, as well as the generous serving of fries. 2 of our group mentioned next day they physically wished they'd stopped, but the burgers were just too good...they happily smiled, content to be finishers. I had the cold corn soup of the day-like a corn milkshake! Mmm, mm! Our server was very nice, and the others were constantly replenishing our water. We begged off dessert and left an extremely contented group, all in all anxious to return.

The Brothers Are Doing a Nice Job
Our first visit here after many years at Matti's. Good meal, we will come back:
Bread starter was uninspiring, just one piece of a hard cold roll; the boys should have repeated the excellent bread basket they used to serve. A clear weakness, don't know why they chose to do this.
Peach/bacon app was excellent! If San Ysidro Ranch Brussels sprouts are a 9.0, Sides knocked it out of the park with a 10.0. Would order these as a side dish, too large for one person as an app.
Fried chicken was excellent: nice salt brine, moist, fried just right. Everybody does roasted or grilled chicken, so nice to see fried as an alternative.
Passed on dessert, pastry chef should do better selections.
Liked the wine on tap. Server Terri has always been good

A Los Olivos Favorite
Sides is a great restaurant for both lunch and dinner. I love the ahi tacos at lunch, melt in your mouth ahi with guacamole....great with some bubbly. Dinner varies. When I went last, I was wanting the great mussel entree, but no such luck. The pork chop was amazing. Dont miss the special appetizers and salads. This is a locals favorite!
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went to this place on a recommendation of a tour guide. It is in the shell of an old hardware store. It is very nicely done, the bar is beautiful and the ambience is casual. The food was wonderful. . .a pancietta with peaches as an appetizer was just amazing. I believe they work hard on their service and it was very good and courteous. It would be wise to get reservations, the place is busy!
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
A local gem
This is a great place to eat. The food was great the service was great, everything perfect. This is the place that locals in the know go.
8/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
"Sides" is on our regular rotation for the Solvang/Los Olivos area. The food is always delicious, the service is always friendly, and we love the casual, laid-back vibe. It's perfect for the small town locale.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Still blown away!
Have dined at Sides four times now and I will continue to recommend to anyone who is looking for a great place to get in town!
8/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Brothers never disappoint!
Sides is exceptional. A great historic building with emphasis on it's history. Makes it have a genuine community feel. The food is exceptional. A waste of time to even mention the "home cured bacon". People seem to order it as a side to everything else. Try the brussels sprouts.
Never hesitate to go here for breakfast, lunch or dinner. You won't be disappointed.

Sides Exec Chef makes it right
We are huge fans of Brothers and were regulars Matteis' Tavern. That said, it pains me to have any negative comment because we have NEVER had a bad meal/experience in all the years of dining. This weekend we had a great table and friendly server. We had brussel sprouts and tomato soup (2 cups) to start...SO GOOD!. The slip up was when I ordered salmon and hubby trout. My salmon was seriously over salted and the potato cake was burnt (BLACK). I dont like to send food back so I ate most of it but didn't enjoy it and mentioned to the server at end of dinner. Hubby's trout skin soggy and fish not seasoned well. Exec Chef came by apologized comp'd my meal and sent a dessert...not necessary but he was sincere and we will return.

Always a pleasure.
Consistently good and innovative food. Pleasant neighborhood atmosphere and definite "go to" restaurant for locals. Well trained and very pleasant staff.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Interesting, good food
Limited menu. Lovely outdoor dining, excellent service. Somewhat obnoxious interjecting diner at adjacent table. Food was very rich so was unable to finish entree, could have done with a cup of the soup versus a bowl for appetizer. The scallops had a wonderful crust but was difficult to tell was the extra crunch just the crust or something else.

Brothers' dont disappoint
Was concerned when the Brothers left their location in Mattei's Tavern in Los Olivos - fearing we would not see them again in the area. That fear was eliminated when Sides Hardware opened just off the main 'square' in town. Although it took a year for us to get back there, our wait was worth it - and more. A creative menu and fabulous offerings. Remarkable panzanetta(sp?) appetizer, best-ever lamb 'steak' with goat cheese gnocchi over oyster mushrooms and green beans in lamb jus. Perhaps one of the best entrees, ever. Equally good was the special mushroom pasta, and our amouse bouche - french fries wrapped in speck (WHO thinks of that??) It was amazing.
Highly recommended, excellent service, comfortable decor and delightful wine list

Outstanding local restaurant
We really enjoyed our dinner. We were in the area, and had seen the place before but it was booked. We came back with a reservation, and were seated immediately. The service is very attentive and professional. The menu is not large, but has good variety and very unusual combinations. With 4 people we selected enough different thing to sample and enjoy all of it. Next time we are in the area, we will definitely go back!
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very good and creative menu
We really enjoyed our visit to Sides. The host and staff were very accommodating, allowing us to move our reservation 'up' a bit through a combination of appetizers at the bar and a table becoming available. The roasted brussel sprout appetizer, which came highly recommended by locals, was unbelievable - vinegar, salt, pepper, and well roasted (and we don't often eat Brussel sprouts!). Great preparation on both the lamb and sirloin main courses. Ice cream dessert was excellent. Only complaint was we ate too much!
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Better than expected!!
We have been to Sides once before and loved it! We couldn't have imagined an even better experience this time around. The burger, fried chicken, brussell sprouts, and polenta were all superb. We also enjoyed the wine on tap so much that we went to the tasting room in Los Olivos the next day to buy a couple of bottles. Look forward to trying their new place in Santa Ynez opening in November!
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Sides is one of our favorite restaurants! It is located in the cozy town of Los Olivos but could compete with any big city restaurant. The food is always outstanding. Flavor, freshness and variety are just a few things that Sides Hardware and Shoes offers.
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Found the menu too limiting and way too much pork and pork products.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Pretty good, but question the value
Just experienced dinner here on a Sat night. Not a super busy weekend in the area as it is the end of crush season for the wine
country. Still the place was full at 8:45 for our seating.
The service was very polite and timely, felt we had her attention and very pleased with service.
The menu is limited and that's ok for a place that is focusing on super specialties and such, but the dinners were just so so. The brussel sprout appetizer was well worth it! unique and very large portion for two. Salmon was over cooked. The prices were upper end. Both of us left kinda thinking we should have stopped at the steak house we passed on the way into the little town to find this place.
No booths, open floor table seating, not too romantic.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our go-to place!
We live 3 blocks away and enjoy Sides so much!! Recommend it highly to our airbnb guests!

Food is very good. Menu seems to change with seasons. Exciting to try different items on menu especially their homemade bacon in their menu items.

Was sushi on the menu
Hi folks - this is an adorable and quiet (weekday) spot and my wife and I had a very romantic dinner - but the scottish salmon was just about rare inside - had to send it back and asked to have it seared again but not sure the chef got the message - it was re-plated but still was a bit rare. Oh well. To their credit the fried chicken that my better half enjoyed was very very good. we'll go back for sure, but my first move will be to cut the salmon in half and make sure its done. Save up too because it is goes a bit north price-wise.

First time at restaurant
We have been fans of The Brothers restaurants since 2000. Sides is a great addition. Excellent service delicious food and warm, cosy atmosphere.

Another great meal!
This was our 4th time eating at Sides. This time we took 2 other couples who had never been. Although the menu didn't include our favorite dish there, we all found outstanding substitutes. The lamb was tender and had a great sauce. My wife has the salmon that she said was excellent. We also had the calamari appetizer (we always order this), the bacon cheeseburger (wasn't on the dinner menu but our server recommended it and our friend said it was one of the best burgers he had ever had), as well as a few others that were also good. The chef came to the table to introduce himself and thanked us for coming, which was a nice touch.
