We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We started with the BBQ Pork Belly and were instantly pleased. Who would have guessed how well the cheddar grits (not to mention the pickled mustard seed) complimented the pork belly? The appetizer alone justifies another visit. We followed that with the Crispy Skin Salmon (my bride's choice) and the Braised Beef Short Ribs, both of which were recommended by our server, and what a recommendation! Each were exquisitely prepared and presented, and very tasty! No doubt we will be back.

Black Sheep is such a fun place to go. The menu leaves something for everyone's taste buds. I had the shrimp and (cheese) grits this time around AND they were amazing. If you haven't been, you must go.

Unexpected pleasant surprise
Not typical Jacksonville ambiance of cuisine. Ironically the staff don't seem to know they are supposed to be more urbane... Which is great by me.

What Riverside Needed!
Fantastic restaurant for any occasion. Service is great, one of the better in the city.

My new favorite!!
This was my third visit to The Black Sheep. Based on my first two visits, I chose it for my 70th birthday celebration. I was not disappointed. It is always a delight. The food is superb, and the service is absolutely top notch.

My wife and I celebrated our 7 year wedding anniversary by taking a rare night out. My wife had gone with a group of friends and told me about Black Sheep and how much she loved it. So, I booked a reservation online. Black Sheep sent me an e-mail confirmation and even called me the day of the reservation. On the phone, the woman I spoke with asked if this was a special occasion. After I told her that it was our anniversary, she offered us two glasses of champagne on the house. To make a long story short, the service was excellent, food fantastic, atmosphere calm and classy without being uncomfortable.

Black Sheep excellence
Once again the team at Black Sheep Restaurant delivered all around excellence for dinner with friends! We enjoyed nice wines and the entrees were flavorful and beautifully presented. Love the local providers and high class recipes.

A warm black sheep on a rainy day
With a name like the "Black Sheep", I was expecting more of an English pub style venue as I am familiar with at least 2 other restaurants in the USA with the same name. What I found a on a rainy night was a trendy and modern venue that seemed to be serving a younger crowd of professionals and Riverside independents.
While the arrival of rain had knocked us off the roof to more crowded confines indoors, i found the food and the service to be exceptional. I liked the beer list, despite the rash of empty barrels for almost every selection I wanted until I settled for something in cans just to put out something.
I will return to the Black Sheep on a sunnier day to take advantage of its landmark view and more of the menu selections.

Everything was awesome, except..... when I asked for the check the waitresses whole attitude changed. She went from great to rude in a matter of seconds. Not sure what that was about. I was kinda disappointed at that point. It ruined a great night,

Enjoyed brunch as my husbands favorite restaurant in Jacksonville!
9/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Check it out
Place deserves 5 stars all across the board. Food was fabulous and even have a vegan option, which is AWESOME. We did dinner downstairs then wandered upstairs for the roof top. Roof top lighting was a little dark, so it made it hard to see at night the further away from the bar you are. But the atmosphere and drinks you made it easy to ignore that. We plan on coming back within the month to try the brunch :)

First Time Diner
This was our first experience with Black Sheep and it was WONDERFUL! The food, atmosphere and service were excellent!

We had a great experience at Black Sheep. Good, service and ambiance was amazing. Will definitely recommend and come again.
9/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
I took my wife for her birthday. Service was excellent, the atmosphere was warm and inviting while refined and upscale. The food (I had the shrimp and grits) was amazing. We'll be back soon.

A delicious gem.
We loved this place! I am vegan and they were very accommodating. The server was delightful and attentive. Great drinks. The food was delicious - we had shoestring fries, fried green tomatoes, and for dinner I had the tempeh dish and my man had the shrimp and grits. Our server brought me special sauces that were vegan. The tempeh was a little dry - that plate needs its own sauce - but it was great with the jalapeño dip. Great atmosphere, if just a little too noisy.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Due to weather, we did not have a chance to enjoy the roof. However, I was very pleased with our table inside. It is casual and demonstrates class. The food was outstanding with regard to taste, creativity, and presentation. I will definitely return.

Another Great Experience
We are repeat diners at Black Sheep. It never fails to disappoint, On this evening, our party shared the fried olives and then moved onto entrees that included the duck "pulled pork" style sandwich and a snapped cooked "low country' style with corn, potatoes, and old bay seasoning. As usually, I ate the cheese grits. Everything was tasty. The remoulade/aioli that is served wit the fries is addictive. In addition, our party enjoyed several cocktails--all inventive and delicious--and a couple of glasses of red wine (Edmeades, in particular). Our server was great; the lighting was great. All in all, another great experience.

5 Points hit the spot
I loved this resturant..I sat on the roof top and it was fantastic! The Service was topnotch! The food was off the chain good! You must try the fried olives!!! To die for..

On Trend. Locally Sourced. Environmentally Sound. Delicious.
9/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great anniversary spot
The overall experiance at Black Sheep was a very pleasant. Since the theme of the restaurant was beef, we decided to try the burger and short ribs which were excellent. Service was great and the staff were very friendly, if the weather is nice the roof top is the best place to lounge. Food prices were reasonable, except for the alcohol which was a bit over price which was to be expected. We would certainly eat there again.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nice evening with friends!
Great night with amazing food and great service INSIDE.
Our pre dinner cocktail on the roof was disappointing.. Shouldn't take that long to get a glass of wine. Server seemed "put out" and lacked friendliness and energy.
9/23/2013 5:00:00 PM
This was our first visit and we lived It! Will go again and take friends
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our first time having brunch up on the open rooftop and it was great, there are plenty of great optionswith the cardamom pancakes being one I can definitely suggest. Great meal!
9/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wanted something different to carry my long time friend for her 50th birthday. She was impressed to say it lightly. The service and food was exceptional. Now planning a return with a group of women professionals to celebrate career advancement for one of our very own.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great for special occasion
We loved it! It was our first time there and it was amazing. We went to celebrate our one year engagement anniversary.!
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Loved the beet salad and the lobster roll (minus the cilantro - which I am glad they left it out for me! )
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, service
This was my second time at Black Sheep and both times the service was outstanding, as was the food. I ordered the pork belly appetizer which was excellent as well as the blue cheese and mushroom bread pudding. The bread pudding came out and smelled fantastic, but when I got into it, it was cold in the middle. I alerted the waitress who immediately apologized and a manager brought out another order of it, which was cooked perfectly and delicious.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best food in Jax!
We had the fried olives, Chicken and Dumplings, and Braised Shortribs. So amazing! Fresh. Flavorful. We are big foodies and this is hands down the best Americana restaurant in town! And don't forget to enjoy a Dusty Boot!
10/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Will be back
Have only been there for brunch... but I will definitely be back to try dinner!! Nice place!
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Food with a Great View
The location is ideal for any special occasion or a romantic evening. The food is good.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and service!
My husband had the spare ribs which were delicious but he thought the portion was small. I had a steak which was great as well. I thought the portions were normal sized. We had the porkbelly appetizer and it had great flavor. We enjoyed the food and drinks. The service was excellent.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
FIne dining for any event.
EASY. Thats my first impression. Everything we needed was anticipated and the interactions with the waitress (Lauren) were perfect. Friendly, sincerely interested, and table visits were well timed which tells me she was paying attention and intuitive.
Food could not have been better. Cocktails.... perfect. Dinner was tasty, well portioned and interesting. Looking forward to my next visit.

All we can say is amazing!!!
All we can say is amazing!!! We were a little hesitant to try a new restaurant for our anniversary, but Black Sheep did not disappoint. Our food was amazing! Thank you for the experience. It is very hard to find anywhere that serves fresh local grown food. We will be back soon!!
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Husband and I went here for
Husband and I went here for date night and decided to sit on the rooftop. It was cold but great view and beautiful sunset. We started with salt and vinegar chips and stuffed fried olives. The olives were served with pimento cheese. I'm not usually a fan of salt and vinegar chips but they were homemade chips, which I always appreciate.
For our entrées I had the snapper with sweet potatoes and my husband had braised short ribs with blue cheese and mushroom bread pudding. We got a side of mac n cheese that was amazing! The bread pudding reminded me of Thanksgiving because it had sage in it and the blue cheese was not overpowering. Dinner was amazing, we ate every bite.
We got the chocolate malt shake for dessert with comes with 3 "fauxreos".

Great food in a trendy spot
This, being our second visit to black sheep, was another hit. The fried green tomatoes with Gorgonzola fondue was a showstopper, a second time around as well. Husband had the short ribs, which were by far the best thing we had all night. The steak au poivre is a little untraditional, but still good if you like a strip steak. The fries were hand cut and season well. The crabcake with mustard sauce we had as an appetizer was fantastic. Also would definitely recommend the beet salad or the garden salad as both were amazing. The peach sidecar cocktail is by far my favorite, featuring peach and bourbon flavors. Very trendy area and a trendy spot within it.
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great view of Jacksonville
You must eat at Black Sheep and enjoy the roof top dining. The view of the city and river is great but the spectacular sunset is amazing. If you prefer to eat indoors you at have drinks on the rooftop before or after around the rooftop fire place. Comfy couches and stand up bar tops make it easy for bknvetsation. Food is delicious.ay I suggest the fried green tomatoes, fried green olives. And the pork chop. You can't go wrong!

Black Sheep True Grits
We celebrated my late uncle's birthday at Black Sheep and it was special. I had shrimp and grits with a dry martini (my uncle's fave). The chef started a new shrimp and grits tradition by putting the perfect amount of pickled vegetables on top of the grits. Try it, you'll love it.

Jacksonville Sweet spot
This black has it all, this was my 2nd time here what a special spot in Jacksonville!!
10/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
Great restaurant with great service and food! The braised short rib is outstanding. I have never had a bad meal at Black Sheep and the service is fabulous. I took out of town friends to dinner on Friday night of Georgia Florida weekend. They were so impressed and had a very difficult time deciding what to order. They were very happy with their choices. After dinner we had drinks upstairs at the rooftop bar. It was a great evening. I love this restaurant!
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
My boyfriend and I LOVED the food and the service was outstanding. My only complaints are how close together the tables are and the noise level. We were seated next to a group of 4 men and our table was so close to theirs that I felt we were out to dinner with them, instead of a romantic dinner for two. It was also very noisy in there. On the verge of sports bar loud. Next time we will be dining on the roof top in the hopes that it is a more quiet and intimate experience for the both of us.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
i have always had great food and service at black sheep...
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food was exquisite and not overpriced. You will not be disappointed. I plan to return every time I happen to be in Jacksonville.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Very pleasant atmosphere and
Very pleasant atmosphere and excellent meal. The beet salad with goat cheese was a real treat. The chef did a wonderful job with the lightly sautéed striped bass and sausage main. My dining partner thought the flavors in the chicken stuffed with a mustard pasta and brussel sprouts married very well. We also enjoyed the variety on the beer and wine lists. A lot of west coast offerings. We were traveling and went to dinner a bit early. Glad we did because we were able to enjoy the evening as the crowd built. Although the restaurant filled with young professionals, it did not get uncomfortably loud and we were able to enjoy our own conversation.
We will keep the Black Sheep on our list for future visits to JAX.
11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
Loved the food and service. However, it was my wifes birthday and we had people (other diners) less then 2 feet away. Wasn't very intimate.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Good food, a little over priced
The food was very good but a little overpriced for me.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Never ceases to be wonderful!
After having been before, I knew my 15-year-old son would love this for his Bday. It was perfect! Both kids tried things they
would NEVER eat at home. Our server was the best!

Very Urban. You feel comfortable
Very Urban. You feel comfortable in jeans or the LBD. Great place for dinner before theater or symphony. Service is not rushed but attentive. Menu is varied, but not overwhelming. The choices are prepared simply with pleasing presentation. The beet salad was out of this world (I love beets). The crusty skin salmon was fabulous; and the coconut cream pie was an expected taste with a unique presentation. If you want a private evening or a more one-on-one romantic evening be sure to ask for a table by the windows; otherwise, you will be able to make new friends with the folks seated next to you. Still, always on my list of restaurants to visit.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
I was drawn to the restaurant because of the outdoor dining on the rooftop...but it started to rain. We had reservations, so we were able to be moved to inside seating. Outdoors was nice and the bar access is a perk. Inside was great, kind of noisy but it was a weekend. The food was superb and the presentation made it taste even better. Kitchen staff came out to see how we enjoyed our meal. I would go back and I will tell others about it!
