I had the smoked trout appetizer
I had the smoked trout appetizer and the veal cheeks. Both were superb.

Everything was delicious -
Everything was delicious - not huge portions which is great since this is a prix fixe menu. Everything delicious!

Wonderful unique food choices
Veal Cheeks is not a food I am familiar with, but I took a chance in ordering it and I wasn't disappointed!. This beef dish was so tender, you could have cut it with a spoon. It was simply delicious! The "amuse bouche" and extra little tart dessert that the chef prepared as nice little surprises to begin and end the meal, were as delicious to the eye as they were to the palate. Simply put, Yum! Also, the ravioli appetizer and chocolate dessert selections were wonderful and flavorful also. My husband ordered the Trout and loved it. His Rhubarb dessert was wonderful also.
I would highly recommend this restaurant. You have to pay for truly good food, so be aware of the prices by checking their menu on-line first.

Perhaps a choice for the special in addition to fish?

Really nice high end restaurant.
Really nice high end restaurant. Wine recommendation was very good. Very expensive though.

Prune not puckered!
Chance led us to The Prune for our 37th anniversary. It will be a memorable one! The amazing courtyard will be an outstanding memory - relatively small, but incredibly beautiful! The sommelier knows his stuff - excellent champagne! The food was wonderfully prepared, though the waiter needs to concentrate a bit more, as he brought the wrong main-course order, and waiting for the actual order kind of wrecked our plans for the rest of the evening. Also disappointing was the fact that he didn't seem bothered much by this gross error.
But it's all good! The fabulous food/drink, scenery, and ambiance make up for little mistakes. We'll definitely be back!

Delicious food, hectic service
Perhaps it was the location of the table on a pre-theatre Saturday evening. The wait staff always seemed to be scurrying, sometimes appearing with plates and then disappearinng. Made it a little tough to feel settled. The food we had was lovely (among other items: ravioli, seafood risotto, veal cheeks, lamb tartare, wild leek and potato soup). May be better when the Festival isn't packing them in.

prix fixe but flexible
I knew the restaurant did a Prix fixe menu but I didn't realize it was all fixed price. Nevertheless there was flexibility on all but the discount menu ...plus the food was so good you wanted all the courses. The wait staff was attentive and professional. Everyone loved their meal. The honey lavender treats they provided with the check were out of this world.

The veal cheeks ordered by
The veal cheeks ordered by my husband could be cut with the fork, very tender and juicy. I ordered the pickerel and it also was cooked to perfection. For dessert, we chose a cheese plate with local produced cheeses, a very nice finish to the meal.

The best gem in Stratford ON
A lovely setting with windows looking out under glorious trees. A table for two so cozy it made us feel we were the only ones there. Crisp linens ready for a scrumptious meal. Starting with a potato leek soup which looked like an Emerald Isle & tasted divine. A spring greens salad, absolutely deliciously dressed. Followed by a main course of Risotto with crab. The other main course was a vegetarian Galette of asparagus & wild mushroom...just yummy. The wine was a house Chardonnay which was perfectly dry. Desert was a spectacular Lemmon semifreddo. The service at Prune is perfect.. All questions answered thoroughly with a smile. Our hats off to Chef Steele . We can't wait to return from the US to what is Stratford's best restaurant !

A prix-fixe worth experiencing
The Prune's menu was uncommonly good. My wife and I loved every course. Although it can make for an expensive night, it is well worth the expenditure for a truly special occasion. The braised veal cheeks were so tender that no knife was needed to put bite-sized morsels on the fork. Although a little brightly lit, it was not really an issue for a 5:30 reservation.

Good Food and great service
We really enjoyed our visit to the Prune. It has a very nice intimate setting with a beautiful view of the backyard.
We liked the fact it was close to downtown so we could walk and the wine list offered a good selection from many ontario wineries. We were not able to speak with the sommelier since he was busy with another larger table but the pairings on the menu were good.
The food was exceptional and presented nicely. The service was good too! Overall it was a pleasant experience and we would not hesitate to recommend it or stop by again on our next visit.

My first Manitoba Maple
Our table at Prune looked out on the small garden, which features a Manitoba maple tree that must be hundreds of years old. That was the second thing I noticed, after the very friendly greeting and seating. Food was great, portions beautifully presented and not too large, which I find refreshing. One can always have a cheese course and dessert. We're from New York, so the interesting wine list was a good intro to some fine Canadian wines. All in all, a happy experience in Stratford Ontario.

special occasion in stratford, on
We have eaten here often over the years and take guests for special occasions. Ownership has changed but chef is the same. They offer a prix fixe, but it is not obligatory. Many choices use local ingredients. Inventive combinations. Good wine list. Excellent desserts.

Wonderful pre-theatre dinner
I arrived 30 minutes late for my reservation due to traffic, but the staff at The Prune made me feel welcome and unrushed while they served me an excellent 3-course meal in just over an hour so that I could make it to the theatre on time. The green pea soup was sublime, and the veal cheek melted in my mouth. Wonderful flavours from the deconstructed warm potato salad served with the veal. Good wine selections by the glass. The back room has a lovely garden feel to it, lots of natural light and greenery outside the windows.

Upscale cuisine and ambience
We enjoyed a special dinner at The Prune. Food was superb and the atmosphere elegant without being pretentious. Service was enthusiastic but not overbearing; servers were well versed in the food and eager to share needed information. We had theater reservations but had a leisurely dinner and made it to the theater with time to spare. Bar was out of a listed ingredient in the Manhattan, the Makers Mark bourbon, but the substitute was excellent. Dinner portions were correctly sized; my duck breast and my wife's seared tuna were each more than sufficient without being overwhelming. Overall an excellent experience which we will look to duplicate in future visits to Stratford.

A good choice for Stratford
A good choice for Stratford theatre-goers. A little off the beaten track but close to downtown, which made for a quiet and relaxing dinner. The food was carefully through through but didn't quite knock our socks off.
7/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Lovely prix fixe menu, great Ontario wines, excellent service. Be prepared to spend $80+ per person if you have drinks.

Prune lives up to expectations
Had a most pleasant dinner at the Prune with a fine menu and wine list
Recommended for after theatre; no rush attentive service, fine dining

A perennial favorite
We've been coming to Stratford for more than 10 years and never miss dining at The Prune. It didn't disappoint us this year -- the food, drinks, service, and atmosphere were all wonderful.
7/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Old Prune was an excellent choice for our anniversary dinner. The staff was wonderful and very knowledgeable of the food and wine. The wine list in on the pricey side so be prepared. The staff prepared a special after dinner tasting with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate :)

Pre Theater Dinner
We were seated immediately and the dinner proceeded at a nice pace as the server knew we had 8:00 theater tickets, but we were not rushed. Food was innovative and beautifully served. The owner even helped us (loan of an umbrella) to get to the car in a downpour rainstorm.
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Prune is a charming, intimate restaurant near the Avon Theatre. The food is beautifully cooked and served. The restaurant supports the Stratford Chef's School and the prix fixe meal composed by students from the school is excellent. The non-school fare is superb as well. This is a special occasion restaurant but well worth it.

Best Restaurant in Stratford.
Best Restaurant in Stratford. Dine here every year and food is consistently outstanding.

An Unqualified Gem
From the moment we stepped up to the door (which was opened for us) the experience exceeded our expectations. Service was attentive yet unobtrusive. there were at least four people seeing to our needs. Food was served in a timely manner to allow us to get to the next play without being late, yet was not rushed. the ambiance was contemporary yet inside a wonderful Edwardian house. A beautiful view of the back gardens.

After attending the matinee performance of Fiddler on the Roof, the Prune was the appropriate conclusion to a fabulous day in Stratford. The meal was delicious and accompanied by great wines.

Our favorite restaurant in
Our favorite restaurant in Stratford, Ontario. The Prune stacks up well with "big city" dining, despite it's out-of-the-way location. This summer, they offered a special menu in honor of the fine young pianist, Jan Lisiecki, from Calgary who was in town for Stratford Summer Music, complete with house-made kielbasa for his Polish heritage. Cool and great tasting. We can only get here once a year in the summer, but The Prune is always part of our Stratford experience.

Much better than our last visit
New ownership seems to have made a big improvement. Had had a dreadful meal/experience a couple of years ago but decided to give the restaurant a try again. Still a few hiccups in service, but the food was delicious and the attitude was heads and tails improved. Would go back again, but still not in my top 5 in Stratford. Very expensive.

Perfect prelude for play
Great experience, we were a party of three couples. One person was a real foodie whp was fully delighted. Wonderful presentation. with emphasis on flavor & texture. Portions were appropriate for 3 courses. Service was genuinely attentive & friendly. $100 + per person price point but commensurate with overall experience.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fantastic food, great wine pairing
This was our best dining experience in he area for years
The food was well prepared, comfortable portions and excellent presentation
We were impressed with the service and attentiveness
A bit expensive and they should consider a wine pairing included fixed price option
We will definitely return next time we are in the area

Pleasant anniversary dinner
We enjoyed the Prune but did not love it; and we wanted to love it. The prix fix menu seems limited, and while three courses for $75 in a resort town is not overly pricey,we felt it was a B+ and not an A. Servers were friendly, yet we were missing cutlery- twice. The table next to us sat uncleared and empty for half our meal. The entrees were tasty, but not very pretty to look at. We were hard pressed to choose a dessert- but they were both good. We would return, but perhaps fit a wine tasting dinner- those menus look inventive and interesting.

The diverse menu lived up
The diverse menu lived up it expectations and we particularly liked the proportions. The presentation over all was excellent and the service was professional, crisp, and friendly. I would suggest greater diversity in wines and and while Niagara wines are good so are the wines from Prince Edward County, France and south Africa. I am a proponent of Canadian wines but I think they are good enough to stand up to a little competition. Over all an excellent dining experience.

Very Good, this time; not its usual
This was perhaps our 15th to 20th dinner at the Prune. As usual, it was very good; but we had a sense that it had slipped just a bit in the quality of the experience. The noise level was a bit more distracting than usual (I realize that is not something that the Prune has much control over), but the major issue was that the main wait person had 10 tables to serve, and she was a bit tardy/inattentive. She was personable and knowledgeable, but in trying to serve so many folks, she left us waiting and wondering at times.
The food was very good, as usual, and a wonderfully eclectic selection that I'm sure would suit almost any taste.
We will definitely return, but we're hoping not to see a downward trend.

Fantastic Food and Service
Excellent food, a bit pricey but not unreasonable for special occasions. We went right before our 8pm theatre show. The timing was perfect by the staff. Attentive and knowledgeable service. Good job!
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
One of the best meals I have had in a long time. We ordered four different appetizers and four different mains. I tasted them all, and they were all outstanding. Nice, quite candle-light atmosphere and flawless service. Not cheap, but if you can afford a $75 dinner, this one is well worth the price. The only rival restaurant in Stratford is Bijoux, which is in the same price range. Highly recommended.

Our Favorite Stratford Restaurant
We have been eaten here for over 10 years and have never been disappointed with the food or the service. The presentation and flavor combinations of the food are excellent. If you are someone who enjoys food with a creative flair, then this is the place for you.
8/23/2013 5:00:00 PM
In Stratford the bar is set quite high, and if you claim to be one of the best options in fine dining you would be expected to deliver. The (Old) Prune does. The food was excellent. However, perfection narrowly eludes the place. A very attentive Maitre D alternates in his visits to the table with another gent who was wearing a sweatshirt and running shoes, and with a visibly inexperienced young lad (eager to assist, but without the know-how). Those details matter. Service is as important as the food, the wine, and the tasteful decor and lighting.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Solid and dependable, excellent.
This is our 2nd visit in two years since the name change. We also made repeated visits when it was the Old Prune. As usual the service, the food were very well done, the portions sized just right. The ambience was casual but elegant especially so in the back room where we overlooked a treed backyard with a pond water feature. The wine list is well edited and includes some hard to find Ontario cult wines. Service was excellent given that some of the servers looked to be still in their teens! Overall we were charmed again and will definitely return on our next visit to Stratford.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
A comfortable dining room with excellent food. Service is good and friendly if a bit unexperienced. Disappointed in the salad choices but otherwise superb food. Great value. Good wine list.
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
We have been going there for a number of years and have had excellent service in a wonderful atmosphere and well trained staff and good wine list.

Look forward all year...
We discovered The (Old) Prune 10 years ago during a trip to Stratford. We have gone back every year since. The food is exceptional and the service is outstanding. A lovely small restaurant in a residential neighborhood. The menu changes frequently but I have never been disappointed. A wonderful dining experience!

Best for Classy Romantics
If you have a few extra dollars in Stratford, I would Recommend The Prune to anyone looking for an elegant, personal dining experience. Unless you are the kind of person who needs to complain about everything, you will not be disappointed by the atmosphere, sophistication, and of course, CUISINE, of The (old) Prune!
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
This restaurant is truly a fantastic experience for those gourmet at home cooks. You are sure to be delighted by the presentation and the taste of every morsel. There wasn't a thing on any of our 3 courses that I would venture to make as, what I like to call myself, a good cook. Every dish was loaded with amazing food compliments and pairing. The wine list offered so much more than the Italian/French upgrades. We had an amazing Pinot Noir from Oregon and it matched perfectly with both our meals. If you want a fabulous experience as well as terrific dinner, with outstanding service, this is the place.

Save room for dessert
Even if you are stuffed from the very generous portion of the main course, don't pass up the dark chocolate pate with red beet ice cream. The combo may sound odd, but it is the perfect match!

A pleasant Choice
We loved our trip to the Prune. I had been there many years ago when it was called The Old Prune. I checked your online menu and decided we could afford the Chef school 3 course, so I booked, Alas, the pork had not come in so we chose the 2 course selections. which were outstanding and quite enough.
I have hearing issues and appreciated the quite atmosphere where we could actually carry on a conversation without shouting or repeating. I will return with my husband one day. Many thanks for a special memorable meal. Eleanor Huber

A New Old Neighbourhood Gem
We hadn't eaten here in a few years on our annual pilgrimage to Stratford, but even though there is new ownership (or management at least) it's lost none of it's charm or good tastes. All of our choices were scrumptious, and it was nice to have a vegetarian option as well as a 2,3, or 4 course prix-fixe choice. We chose 3, and we're glad we did, as the desserts were wonderful.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
I don't usually order the vegetarian plate but I did and The Prune and it was very tasty! I like the portion sizes; not too much but satisfying.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Enjoyed the menu by chef school
We really like the menu created & prepared by the students of the chef school. Recommend you try it. Enjoy fixed menu pricing. Small portions of tasty foods.

Open Table did NOT work
Even though Open Table sent us the correct date & time when we made our reservation, on the day of he reservation, Open Table sent us a reminder with the WRONG DAY AND TIME: i.e. Friday at 6:30 instead of Thursday at 7:30. Luckily the Prune could accomadate us, no thanks to the Open table system

Convenient waking distance. Culinary School option on menu was terrific. Staff attentive without being intrusive. Great experience.
