First Visit To Salt-04/20/2013
Overall we had a very interesting and good first visit to Salt Kitchen and Tasting Bar. The portions were very tiny and a little expensive. This was the kind of place where you were eating with your eyes more than your mouth. Great attention to detail was given by the staff in constructing each item and its presentation in intricate detail. The loft or mezzanine dining room was unique but totally non-compliant with ADA Standards for a modern restaurant. Also the wait staff tripped and fell bringing up food up the steep stairs which disrupted the dining room once. An Elevator or ADA Lift is a reasonable accommodation for handicapped customers and the dining support staff. All of the wait help were very well trained and great.

We loved Salt!
Little plates, big plates, salads, burgers, we loved it all at this small, hip restaurant. We tried to eat our way through the menu and did pretty well. Try it: the fried oysters, the rabbit rillette, the octopus, the oxtail empanada. You won't go wrong. The service was friendly and knowledgeable. If you are lucky enough to be in Honolulu and are willing to venture away from the guidebook restaurants, then try this place. We certainly weren't disappointed one bit.

Great lil spot
The food and ambience were spot on, and so was the service. This wasn't a busy night so luckily our food came out on time. Not too fast or slow. Would recommend for both couples and groups, but maybe not kids. Great overall .

This restaurant/bar is in a great location and opens at 5 so it's great for a drink and snack before a movie or other event in Kaimuki. They have made a very small space into an attractive multilayered venue. Food was also very good. Fingerling potatoes were exceptionally fresh and perfectly cooked

I took my boyfriend to Salt
I took my boyfriend to Salt for his birthday- all the way from North Shore!:)
Food was amazing! Small plates I thought were reasonably priced & portion was good size- large plates were a little small for the price but it tasted so delicious we could look past that- we were just sad there wasn't more skirt steal cuz it was Ono!!!
Gnocchi was super yum- rabbit, oysters and pierogi all so good!
Dessert- must get churros with horchata custard!
Service was on point- only complaint was our table was a little awkwardly placed and felt like we were in the way anytime someone walked by, but that didn't ruin our overall experience. Definitely check this place out!

Had a great time!
Took my friends here to try out the delicious cheeses and amazing food. The "big cream little rind" cheese was really tasty - never had a cheese quite like it. I would highly recommend to everyone!

Husband and I try to go once a month. Great place! Brought friends over and they loved it!

A New Yorker
Simply stated, transplant Salt to NYC and it gets an immediate 3 stars. What more can I say.

Thank you. Service is always great wether I am going in for just a few drinks or dinner.
7/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've dined here several times, and enjoyed cocktails and apps a half dozen more, and I love it. Fun atmosphere, great food, quick and helpful service, friendly bartenders who offer terrific specialty drinks and also will manufacture a drink from your favored liquors - just great. I've taken friends and family from San Francisco here, and everyone had a really good time.

happy hour on sundays is all
happy hour on sundays is all night and only for the bar downstairs. we made reservations and were seated upstairs. the waitstaff was attentive without hovering. we appreciated that the server explained components of the dish they just brought. while it can be pricey, we all enjoyed our food and drinks. i love that they use local ingredients and make everything from cured meats to nutella ice cream.
7/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food & service were excellent - portions are small and pice a bit high for the area. Overall we did have a nice experience.
7/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
Always great food. The noise level is loud but the food is incredible.
7/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
If you've never tried Salt, i would highly recommend a visit. The servers and staff are great - very attentive and thoughtful. Loved the fried pickles and the beet salad. Gnocchi's were quite good. Only disappointment was not being able to tried the Fried Oysters - will just have to go back.

What a Find!
A small group I attending wanted dinner somewhere away from other conventioneers and the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and checking Open Table Salt caught my eye. Everyone raved about the choice. First of all our server, Erin, was a gem! She was so knowledgable about the menu and preparation and patient with us. Second, the food was amazing..truly the. best of fresh and locally grown options. I always worry if the vegan/vegetarians among us will find good things to eat but that was not a problem at Salt. I will definitely keep this on my list of places to visit again. :Did I mention that the desserts were amazing?

Recommended by a friend in the restaurant business. Found the food and drink selection to be intriguing, the preparation exquisite and the knowledge of the wait staff to be outstanding. Will return for sure.

A unique dining experience
We were visiting Oahu and a relative who used to live there recommended Salt. We went with a local friend who had never heard of it. Their tapas-style menu was so fun and unexpected and a change from the food most restaurants on the island serve (not that we disliked that either). They cure their own meats. They have very innovative cocktails that did not disappoint as well. Service was spot on and the restaurant was fun. Worth the cab ride to get there from Waikiki.

A nice surprise
Although portions are small in general, the food is remarkable, with complex flavors. The serving of the gnocchi entree appeared smaller than what I expected, but I would definitely order it again. The table next to us ordered the charcuterie board and liked the pate so much they ordered an additional pate on the side. Except for the warm glass we got for the cold bottled beer, the service was very good, as was the timing of the dishes we ordered. We would definitely return to eat here.

Solid spot, I have enjoyed
Solid spot, I have enjoyed the experience each time. The gnocchi was my favorite this time!
8/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Order only what you can finish. Chicken was good, potatoes were a little sour, but that's the taste of the dish. Good sharing place. Service was great, expos explain dish in detail at table.

Feel NorCal in Honolulu
In Honolulu, there have been enough "resort dining" places and cheap ethnic places, but no "in the middle" places with fresh, local ingredients. Now I felt so relieved and relaxed when we stepped into Salt Kitchen & tasting Bar. I do not know how difficult in Hawaii to pursue "Farm to Table" , but at least Salt has done it nicely.

Great Small Plates
Lively downstairs bar, dining area in the loft. Outstanding charcuterie (blonde mortadella, maple chicken liver pate, pickled vegetables, dry salami), although we would have loved a little more of the jams and chutneys that accompanied each item. The oxtail empanadas are what originally drew us here, after having sampled them during an eat the street event. They were even better than we remembered, and should not be missed. The Kunia green salad was excellent, especially the sliver of crispy guanciale. Plenty more intriguing items on the menu to keep drawing us back here. Excellent and knowledgeable service.

Perhaps the best dining experience in HNL.
Food is artful, beautifully prepared and served.
Our server (bow tie, can't remember his name?) was amazing.
(food did take a little long to come out of kitchen)
Everyone took such pride in the food.

Frolicking on Sunday night
There re not a lot of options for a Sunday night experience and we were delighted to find Salt open and accommodating. We made an early reservation and called ahead to postpone until later. Without hesitation, they moved us 45 minutes later. Service was stellar--everything was timed perfectly, did not want for more water, wine refills or otherwise. A great evening.

We visit Oahu once a year
We visit Oahu once a year from Florida and Salt is always a must. The food is really outstanding...creative without being overly complicated. Really interesting beer and wine list. The service is also wonderful. All I can say is bacon & eggs and chocolate brownie are a must. I can't wait to go back!
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Overall, the experience was great! Service, atmosphere and most important, the food. The reason why I didn't give it the full 5 star is because I did feel that the food tasted a little too salty...even the dessert. Maybe..it's the name??
9/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was well thought out, and displayed in a creative manner. The service and menus were casual, yet precise (reflecting the changing menu, perhaps?). The only two gripes I had we're the noise level, and being told by the hostess(before we even were seated) that the restaurant was overbooked that night, so we had to vacate our table into hours. Not a big problem, but who wants that as a first impression?

Enjoy a local restaurant
Salt Kitchen is a nice neighborhood restuarant far from the normal tourist-hyped restaurants in HNL with reasonable prices & a creative menu. Seafood dominates the menu. I enjoyed a warm tomato salad and tako with chorizo, oniions & thinly sliced fingerling potatoes. (I remembered when the dish arrived that "tako" is Japanese for "octopus". It wouldn't have been my first choice if I had remembered this but was quite good.) My dining partner had the hamburger which was cooked as requested, medium-rare. The menu was enticing & I was sorry that we weren't with more people so we couuld have shared dishes like the pork belly and sous-vide egg. They are heavy on Belgium beer offering more tthan Chimay. Enthusiastic & knowledgable staff.
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
The service is amazing!!! The food equally great.. The staff are quite informed on where the food of the restaurant comes from and were happy to answer all questions w o attitude or sense of the customer being a nuance. I would dine here again.

A Hidden Gem
A must-see for the pork and beer lovers. The kim chee reuben, taken in name alone, is a ridiculous combination of flavors. Do yourself the favor of trying it. It's one of the most exciting sandwiches I've ever feasted on. What a wonderful surprise. And double that up with the Oxtail empanadas, and it's a meal fit for Kamehameha himself.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Definitely had a great time my first go here. I did think that the chicharrones were a little on the saltier side, but otherwise good. I loved the pot de creme.

the jidori chicken and kona
the jidori chicken and kona kampachi were excellent!

Foodie Pearl in a Tourist Oyster...
What a great find in Oahu! These guys get it. Service wasn't 'island time' and the Food was forward thinking, defined and surely outside the box of all tourist joints and proved to be even better than larger foodie cities. The whole experience was On Point! Nicely done guys! We'll be raving about the great food, service and experience!

hip little neighborhood restaurant
Great for a fun girls' nite out or chill date if you are looking for fun food, creative drinks and hip atmosphere. loved the oxtail empanadas, fried oysters and their prawn special (think it was their hook line and sinker dish). Their signature drink list is nice and beer selection extensive, including some great microbrews. Would highly suggest trying the lilikoi habanero drink, if you like tangy flavors with a little spicy zing -- yum.

Innovative and fresh local
This was my first visit to Salt. Excellent. Vincent the GM was a great host. Thanks for a nice evening.

Hamburgers are fantastic!
Staff was very helpful in describing food, wine list and beer list. Recommendations were great. Food was seasoned juuuust right. Favorite pupu: flash fried oysters with dashi paper (paper so ono). Favorite big plate: hamburger with bacon jam, egg and blue cheese, med rare. INCREDIBLE. Had a friend taste and he said it was "the best damn hamburger I ever ate". Interesting menu. My husband who doesn't like to go out much enjoyed himself and said we should go there again. Hmmm. Again, wait staff friendly, atmosphere just right (not too loud), wine list good and the food was good. Just got a little warm later in our evening. All in all, a great evening out with friends.

Lively, Great Small Plates
The small open loft dining area above the always-bustling downstairs bar imparts a lively atmosphere. With so many great small plates, we have never made it to the main courses. As always, the charcuterie board is a star attraction. Don't miss the chicken-fried rabbit. Not many seats, so reservations are recommended.
11/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
Double date on a Sunday evening. Love the variety of tapas, the pork belly rillette was delicious but the oxtail emapanadas stole the show. I would order 5 plates of those next time! Roasted fingerling potatoes were tasty, the chicken fried rabbit was good too. More on the menu I want to try so will definitely be back. Fun place to snack on a variety of tapas, sometime I will try a big plate.

Eclectic food, good wine list, very noisy and hard to have a conversation
Small, reservation recommended. Not a place for everyone or for a business meal or romantic night out

A great option tucked into a neighborhood. Even though we were official "tourists"- this was well worth the trip.

Gastropub at its BEST
I don't know why we took so long to dine here as we've passed this restaurant so many times! This place IS a gastropub in its fullest sense... rockin' a vibrant full-bar, exciting wine list, fabulous food and great service. This place is unpretentious. We "got" the chef's endeavor to utilize various sources/forms of salt to balance other taste senses.Notably, there's in-house curing for their charcuterie plate and locally sourced ingredients. From appetizer to dessert, our tastebuds were delighted by the freshness of ingredients, textures and the balanced seasonings. You must try their dessert with soy sauce caramel..it was OUTSTANDING and highly unusual.
