We have been here several times in the past few months and have always been totally satisfied with the excellent food and service. Daniela and Todd are a wonderful team with their creativity and use of local ingredients. The menu is ever changing. The scallops and steak bavette are a special treat, as is the wild striped bass.

Great food and service. Everyone in our party of 6 said it was perfect!

service slightly off this time
We love the Pickled Heron and have taken several other couples there. This time I felt the food quality was a little lower (from high standard) and the service was a bit lax. Normally I think servers in most restaurants clear plates too aggressively, leaving the slowest eater alone with her plate. However this time the opposite occurred, plates we were long done with were clogging the small table. Certainly not a deal breaker, but slightly annoying.
My lamb and mint risotto dish was delicious, but could have been hotter.
There should be more toast or bread with the charcuterie plate (or a server quick to replenish). We could not finish all the yummy spreads because we ran out of toast.

In a word... Phenomenal!
What a tremendous experience. Quite simply the best restaurant I've been to in Philadelphia. My guests and I had the greatest time, and the food was simply outstanding. Our server Sean was without a doubt the best server we've ever had. Extremely knowledgable about the food and its preparation, and wonderful about suggestions. Please never let him go! The chefs at The Pickled Heron truly have something special on their hands here, and it shines through with each delicious dish!

Food done right
My wife, son and I ate there Friday and had a great meal. Fish was cooked well and the squash blossoms were awesome. Must have the foie gras. We've been there before and they are very consistent. Worth several visits

Just go! The good, service and atmosphere are lovely. And you just can't beat a BYO with food that pairs perfectly with a variety of wines.

Pickled Heron delight
The Pickled Heron is located in the up-and-coming section of Philadelphia called Fishtown. The area was nice, the restaurant was better! This is a great place for delicious food with interesting taste parings without all the fuss. A highly recommended BYOB.

Bistro Food with a friendly touch
Pickled Heron is a find. Although off the beaten track the food is excellent with new takes on French Bistro food. The soft shell crabs were the best I've had in years.

Best Kept Secret
The Pickled Heron offered a Beet and Goat cheese tortellini that bordered on sublime.
The appetizer platter with homemade meats and cheeses set the tone for an evening
of dining delight.
A sampler of all their homemade desserts set us swooning by the meals end!
The waitstaff was informative and friendly.
The owners/chefs prepared each dish with an obvoius love of their ingredients locally
gathered and treated with an artisans touch.
They also support local artists with periodic rotation of the wall art.
Don't miss out on this best kept secret that everyone should know about!

Having not previously dined in Fishtown, and unsure of what to expect, we found the space to be quite charming with brightly colored walls and original art. We were greeted enthusiastically by reservation name and seated promptly. While small, the menu was exquisite. We started with foie gras...delicious and creative presentation and a unique arugula salad. Each of our four entrees, with perfectly paired accompaniements, received rave reviews. The dinners were reasonably sized and well priced. At the end of our meal, the two chefs visited each table to accept the compliments of all. We look forward to returning and have already invited other friends to join us. Thank you Open Table for bringing this delightful BYO to our attention.

innovative French cuisine
We have dined here many times since this fine BYOB opened, and we are never disappointed. Traditional French creatively presented. Excellent! We have recommended this restaurant to many friends and family members, all of whom are equally delighted with this wonderful addition to the neighborhood.

We have dined here several times now, and have always had great food and great service. The foie gras was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, the arugula salad was simple but perfect, the shrimp were fresh, grilled-to-perfection and enormous! With their ever-changing menu, each meal we've had there has has been completely different, but consistently terrific. GO!!

One of the best meals of my life!
It's clear the two chefs have a passion for food. Every dish that came out was perfectly cooked. I've never tasted such amazing food, delivered timely, by fantastic fine dining wait staff. This was one the greatest meals I've ever had in my life, and I've eaten all over the world. I guarantee eventually they will get a michelin star, no joke.
8/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
What the foie?
Wow, we were just back at TPH for a second time.
We had a really early reservation so had the place to ourselves.
Our waiter was fantastic - thanks too for the Rategast recommendation in Williamsburg :).
He said the foie gras was amazing and it was.
So was everything else we had. The lamb and cous cous and my duck dish with polenta sticks, mmm, to die for.
And parking is so EASY!
Can't wait to get back again!

Very fresh, delicious food with creative flair. Although this restaurant is out of the way, it was definitely worth it....we will be coming back! The service was great and the food superb!

for foodies - come to fishtown
this is a terrific find in the developing area of fishtown. the noise level is so low - you can have a conversation without distraction. interesting art work on the walls by local artists. from the small plates through the dessert - lovely experience.

Pickled Heron in North Philly....
A little gem of a restaurant with well prepared food in a simple, classic atmosphere. Worth the trip to this off the beaten path north Philly location.

A favorite BYOB
This is a gem of a BYOB on a quiet stretch of Frankford Ave. The food, service, and ambiance are well suited for a nice dinner of inspired conversation with friends or for couples who want to get away from the hustle of Center City. For entrées, we had the foie gras and cucumber soup. The tangy cold soup complemented the savory richness of the foie gras, which was buttery creamy. For the main courses, we shared the crispy duck and wild mushroom tagliatelle. While the duck was superbly cooked and a beautiful cut, the breading was a playful but not totally convincing take on this dish. I enjoyed the rich, light ribbons of pasta. Plum cake a la mode for dessert? Yes, please!
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Pickled Heron delivers on flavor! Highlights for our dining party- the charcuterie plate! The foie mousse was amazing and the duck rillettes were also excellent. The bread part of the squash blossom flatbread was not crackery, but bready in a flavorful and light way. The bass was cooked expertly, and although the crispy duck was not crispy, its coating was flavorful and the taste had a meaty note, accented by the duck sausage. The chef also accomodated my request for a sub of potatoes for the kale and white bean side dish. The couscous-eggplant accompaniment to my friend's lamb dish was unexpected and sweet in a way that only skillful cooks can manage. Of the desserts I thought the crême brûlée was the best.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
I took my wife and our friends to The Pickled Heron for her birthday and we were not disappointed. Excellent food, service and atmosphere from start to finish. If you haven't been here yet, you really must go. Not all of the best restaurants in Philadelphia are located in center city!
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Outstanding Food, Service, Ambiance
We arrived early (5:30) and were seated in an attractive dining room. Wait person was ready and eager to give friendly tour of the menu. The food prep in the open kitchen was fun to watch. The menu small but made up of choice options. Everything was well presented and tasted great. Some unusual choices, eg Squash Blossoms. By the time we left the tables were full and the dining room louder, but tolerable. A real find.

Third time's the charm
We've introduced three separate sets of friends -- from three totally different part of your lives, including a San Francisco artist and her star physician husband (both of whom have relocated from Rome) -- all three were wowed.
Whatever they do with foie gras - this time it was raspberries -- is so good I could order it for dessert, too.

Pickled Heron a real find
Pickled Heron is on Frankford Avenue but worth the trip from Center City. The food is vibrant, authentic French Bistro food but with a modern twist. The use of seasonal veggies and the best soup in town makes this a go to spot.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Lovely atmosphere. Moules frites excellent. Lamb osso buco tasty but needed bit of sauce. Loved the couscous. Beef bavette nicely done. Excellent desserts. Waitress was excellent, quietly proficient.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Perfect meal x4 until....
Everything we had-arugula salad, charcuterie, mussels, potato leek soup and steak-was extra ordinary. We went at 6:00 on a Thursday night and it was relaxed with attentive but not intrusive wait staff. Great funky but somehow elegant atmosphere. Huge wedding party came in and the noise level was unbearable. Can only assume that that's what place sounds like when it's full. So, go often because it's fantastic but go early if you want to eat in peace.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great French food, great value
Arugula goat cheese salad, duck charcuterie, lamb osso busso, steak, and duck egg creme brule were all excelllent and prepared gluten free. The food is gourmet, but the prices reasonable - dinner for two for $80, due to BYOB.
15-20 minutes from center city, worth the trip.
Wait staff exceptionally pleasant, attentive and helpful.
Will add to my list of my favorite Philly restaurants.

Foodies BYO Gem of a Restaurant!
Hidden in an up n coming area of Fishtown, is one of the Gems of the Philly Culinary Scene.
Passionate couple , dreamy waitstaff who truly care about your dinning experience.
Food is fresh of the day in creative & magnificent preparations. Who would think of an almond pesto for the duck in peach sauce?
Foie Gras is the best in the city.. I have tried them all!
You will not be disappointed ..but surprised !

We are weekend visitors to
We are weekend visitors to Philly and normally dine within the downtown area. I spotted The Pickled Heron on Open Table and decided to venture out of our comfort zone. Glad we did. The food was fabulous and the ambience was warm and intimate. Was able to give thumbs up to the chefs and owners from our table and receive warm smiles in return. Our waiter, Shaun, was engaging and attentive throughout the meal. We dined casually and were never rushed.
Parking on the street was no problem and a well lit neighborhood.
This is a must for all you foodies out there.

Great meeting place
We had our Board meeting there in a partitioned off area inside the restaurant. Great food and ambiance and a real treat for our Board members.

Do Not Miss
This place is fantastic. The menu is small but you'll want everything on it. The service is wonderful and the atmosphere is comfortable and cozy. Do not miss this one.

A special time at a special place
Pickled Heron's one of those great little out-of-the-way places where everyone tries soooo hard to make your time with them an amazing experience - & they succeed. Chef-owners Daniela and Todd deserves their success, and Sean makes everyone feel like a regular, even if you're a newbie (which we're not). The house-made charcuterie included an outstanding foie gras crème brûlée (not your everyday appetizer!), the pasta special tonight was carbonara with fabulous bacon, & the moules frites were perfect. My wife's scallops were huge & delicious (as was the pea purée that came with it), & my steak came with a large roasted pepper stuffed with.......steak, along with great polenta. Wonderful meal, wonderful time, wonderful night - it always is!

Always pleases but in a fresh
Always pleases but in a fresh an vibrant way. Seasonal changes in menu mean coming back often is always exciting. Service at great bistro food at reasonable prices. I'm glad this isn't on 13th street because I'd never get a table.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
If you like French.......
The menu is very small, too small for my tastes. I had the beef entry, which was tasty, with polenta and a stuffed pepper on the side. The stuffing in the pepper didn't really work well. I had to play with it in my mouth, trying to figure out what it was. The service and ambiance were excellent, and I will go back another time. Every table was taken, so they have their following. I hope to be one of them someday.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great food, slow service
We waiting a really long time for service even though the restaurant wasn't very busy. The food was good though.
11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
Overall - very good
The Pickled Heron was a nice change to the Center City restaurants we frequent - we're always looking for a different BYO to try out and this fit the bill. While I was not blown away by the food, it was very good and worth the night out.
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Amazing owners and staff
The chefs/owners Daniela and Todd do a fabulous job and are very friendly in the open kitchen. The server we had, Shaun, was wonderful. He provided great advice and attentive service without being intrusive.

A Great Find in Fishtown
The Chefs worked every minute this past Saturday night and the food was perfect ! Excellent presentation, wonderful flavors and the servers were friendly and worked as a team.

Great Neighborhood Gem
I'd driven by this little, French BYO a few times and never noticed it. Glad I figured it out! The menu is on the small side, but has so many tasty items--like the mussels, foie gras, duck, and venison--that any Francophile will find food they want here. Services is great and It's a small eclectic space with plenty of room for a party of two or five times that. It's cozy, romantic, and BYO--perfect for a first date or a 15th date.

Can't get enough!
For the first time in decades of enjoying Philly's food finds, I found myself booking my next dinner here before I even left the dining room. This amazing pair of chefs bring flavored together that can only be described as transcendence in your mouth. The pate that is sometimes on the charcuterie plate melts like meat butter on your tongue. The suckling pig special is wonderful, but even more fantastic is the cassoulet. Best cassoulet I've ever had in Philly, and perhaps the homey atmosphere added to the warm comfort of the subtle blending of flavors. The chocolate mousse dessert was so good the first time I had to get it again. I mean "I hope the chef is single" kind of good. Go. Now.
