The restaurant was perfect for celebrating a birthday with a friend. We really enjoyed the adventure of the beer pairings with the tasting menu. The "cicerone" was a great guide.

We Felt Special
We asked for a wine sample and a little taste of a sauce. Our waiter happily obliged. We felt very valued and appreciated. It was a special night for all four of us.

Beer and food pairing menu is great
So many great beers, and the entire menu looks delicious, but we felt the way to try the most different things would be through the pairing menu, and we weren't disappointed. Service is very attentive and the pairings were explained beautifully. Portions were very generous for a tasting menu, and so were the pours...enough beer to sip all through the dish. It was fun to note the characteristics of the beers brought out by the different ingredients.
The restaurant itself is well-designed, and high ceilings make up for the narrow building. It's lively, but not too noisy. There's a nice wine list if you prefer, but if you figure out what you'd like to eat and then ask for a beer recommendation, I promise, you will enjoy it just as much!

FINALLY! Great beer AND Great FOOD!
We happened on Abbots on their 1 year anniversary and it is now our new favorite beer AND food spot. Salmon grilled perfectly with sea beans and a beautiful light sauce. Great salad with the tastiest herbs and greens, great house made pasta...husband had a perfect duck breast...all paired with the perfect beers. Could get a more welcoming and dynamic set of hosts up front but all other areas had great service. Spendy. But worth it.!

Top 10 New San Francisco Restaurant
Great location in the Mission, stunningly understated elegance in the decor, astonishing beer collection, with limited but very interesting wine list and FOOD TO DIE FOR! Innovative cuisine that is flawlessly executed--pheasant with crispy Yukon golds, collards that would make a refined Southern lady stand up and say "Amen!" and a plum reduction that perfectly accented the dish. Relaxed and knowledgable service. Great vibe. Go! Go soon. Go now!

Delivers on its promise
If you are a beer fanatic and a foodie, rejoice--The Abbot's Cellar nails it! The Abbot's Cellar bills itself as providing an exceptional food and beer pairing experience, and I was dazzled by how well they did this. I had three rounds of beer, all recommended by our very capable waitress that night, Carrie. Started strong with a double IPA and got all the hop punch I was looking for. The saison I had with my scallop appetizer, which was incredibly tasty, meshed seamlessly with the food. For my equally excellent halibut entree, the saison she paired that dish with had these excellent peppercorn flavors that jumped up on the back end, complementing and enhancing the flavors of this dish. Beautiful/cool decor, great location.

I went with my five old beer-snob frat buddies. We were all pretty impressed with the food and beer menu but still decided to pick our own beers rather than follow the waiter's rec's. And despite well-portioned meals we still ended up grabbing pizza slices a few doors down about an hour later. Overall though this place did the trick for what we were looking for. And it had been on my bucket-list for a while. Glad we went. I recommend you do the same.

Not a beer person but...
this restaurant is about so much more. The food is unique and well executed. While my beer friends were happy with the suggested pairings, the wine list was also a great match for the menu. The space is gorgeous and best of all, we didn't have to shout to be heard by our tablemates! The staff was very knowledgeable and gracious. I fell very well taken care of and plan to go back soon. Loved the place.

Perfect Lady Date Spot
My best friend and I went here earlier this week to celebrate my birthday...it was perfect! Our server was exceptional - very friendly, knowledgeable and the right amount of attentive. We were offered samples to ensure we liked our selections and found all the beers to be fantastic! We split two appetizers, an entree and a cheese plate. The pork chop over collard greens/corn/prosciutto/potato hash was to die for! Perfectly tender. Perfectly seasoned. And oh so flavorful. The restaurant is really well decorated, modern by warm and welcoming. The noise level was just fine. Bravo, Abbot's Cellar! We'll be back!

Craft Beer star, but food its equal
First visit to The Abbott's Cellar and I thought the entire experience was outstanding. The service was great from reception, to bartenders to servers these people have been really well trained in customer service. I expected the amazing beer tasting with over 150 types on draft and in bottles to be fun - but what I did not totally expect is the gourmet food experience that rivals much "fancier" restaurants. The atmosphere is convivial and bar like without bearing overbearing and loud. An all around star - unusual environment, great good - they really have it going on....

Just gets better and better...
Abbot's Cellar is a truly special experience. Their food is amazing, the service is fantastic, and the specialty beer/food pairings are perfection. I would highly recommend the tasting menu with the beer pairing. It's amazing. They change their menu nightly, so there is always something new to try.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've been twice now and have loved it both times. Food is excellent (great choices without a big long menu to read through), beer is excellent, and service is excellent. Kerri was outstanding, as was Mike the beer guy. Ambiance is perfect. If you prefer wine over beer, don't let that stop you - they'll convert you for the night. Wanting to go back again already.

Did I Get an A?
Stunningly grand space, with great attention to the details. The hostess was extremely warm and welcoming. We had the tasting menu and it was superb. The beer tastings, as with all good pairings, tasted a bit off at first sip, but then blossomed with the accompanying course. Service was efficient and courteous, but the long lecture that accompanied each course and beer was thorough to the point of exhausting -- my only complaint, and it's a tiny one. Overall a marvelous experience.
8/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
The beer pairings with each course were phenomenally matched. Each course and beer went together fantastically and was incredible quality. The staff were all friendly. The only downside of a seasonal, fresh, and creative menu is that you know you'll never get that same meal a second time!
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
wonderful old facility
This is a special place -- amazing old location. The focus is on beer and beer pairings for the very good cuisine. Notwithstanding the advertised valet parking, there was no valet the night we visited the restaurant. (Apparently he arrived later.) Street parking was a nightmare! I will definitely go back, expect an adventure.

Great Mission Beer/Wine Restaurant
Diffferent concept, should do well. It was a Monday night so not the busiest night of the week, but good traffic and crowd.
Food was good quality, good presentation. We had the tasting menu, paired with various beers.
Beer list is of course extensive. Tasting menu was, well, tasty. Several courses. Beers were brought out with each course and explained the paring. Portioins were "California" size, I'm a biker......so big appetite....you wont go out stufffed.
Servers were knowledgeable, friendly. Slow to start, but nice pace overall. Host and staff were pleasant, professional, in a casual environment.
Ambience was pleasant modern/rustic. Relatively quiet for a large space.Lighting was pleasant, subdued but warm.

We had a terriic time in this
We had a terriic time in this new livey place. The service was great and the food and beer pairngs were well done.
8/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
a goto place, server turnover
The food is always very good, but they do have a large turnover in their service staff, which sometimes means a lot.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
great addition to Mission dining
Food was superb; well put together and inventive dishes without being overly complicated. We had the gnocchi appetiser and the salmon and chicken mains-all excellent. As the more formal sister of Monk's Kettle, the beer options seem endless. Wine options are very good, too. Valet parking really helps in this neighborhood. Our car was nearly kept in front of the restaurant. The space has a high ceiling (old warehouse?) but their noise muffling works!

Fantastic Food, Beer and Service
Our first visit to Abbot’s Cellar and it was awesome. We did the tasting menu with beer pairings. It seems so strange to say “tasting menu and beer pairings” but it was delicious, different and we learned more about beer in one evening than forty years of consuming it.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Beautiful space, with helpful, gracious service and terrific food. Could not have asked for more.

An outstanding restaurant
I usually don't write reviews, but Abbott's Cellar is a serious contender to the title of the awesomest restaurant in the city. Food was excellent, and the pairing made so much sense that we didn't want to leave and wanted to start all over again and don't get me started on the ambience or the service. MUST get there today!

Great beer menu and a very
Great beer menu and a very knowledgeable Cicerone to explain it all. The tasting menu with the beer pairings was excellent.
9/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
I was apprehensive after reading some uneven reviews in Yelp, mostly surrounding slow or poor service and some about food. We found our dining experience as excellent. The service was very attentive. Half the table choose the food with beer pairing and the other half ordered a la carte which didn't phase them in the least. From the amuse bouche of tonnato on a crisp to the financier for dessert the food was excellent. The one issue we did have was the lamb loin portion of the entree was extra fatty. the wait staff didn't blink and replaced that with a tasting serving of their sirloin strip. The beer pairings were very interesting and the Certified Cicerone (Beer Sommelier) explained each and why they paired with the food. Highly recommend.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
An awesome experience
The concept is food with beer pairings. Everyone we dealt with was professional, fun, and knowledgeable. The beer pairings were spot on. Our waiter was enthusiastic and informative. We recommend this place highly.

Favorite New Restaurant
This is my favorite new place to eat on Valencia. The atmosphere is perfect. The wood interior is beautiful and makes for soft acoustics that allow you to hear the people at your table without everyone having to yell. The food is excellent and so is the service. The staff members are friendly and knowledgeable. I've now had dinner there three times and have thoroughly enjoyed each experience from start to finish. The beer and food pairings are especially fun and delicious.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
cool set up
we really liked Abbot's Cellar. It has a really good vibe and a great beer menu. We'll definitely come back!

Fun, Interesting Beer Pairings
Did the beer & food pairings for dinner; ate at one of the kitchen seats. Had a good time. The pairings were interesting, the staff was great, the food was a little ... bland? I think this is a place to go for a snack and a beer, don't go overboard.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great beer pairing!
We had the tasting menu with beer pairing and it was very nice. Some of the pairing were absolutely perfect. Of special mention was the peppery sausage with a stout beer. Fantastic! Service was good and the sommelier was very knowledgeable about the beer and the food pairings. The only disappointing note was the dessert which was unremarkable. Fortunately, there's Dandelion right next door.

fantastic beer and ale and wine list
very creative dishes

Notable Beer List
Outstanding beer selectin and in depth knowledge of the wait staff about it, as well as fabulous recommendations for beer/food pairings.

Too much fun
We had an amazing time - beer pairing menu was a blast, service was terrific, and the place has an interesting and edgy design. We were there relatively early on Sunday, so the restaurant was quieter than it might be.

A great night out
I had dinner here with my husband and we have a fantastic time. We ordered a la carte and asked the waiter to bring out his recommendations for beers. Everything was delicious!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything was excellent
There were a fair number of very negative review on Yelp, but I decided to give it a try anyway because of their amazing beer selection. I am usually too lazy to bother writing reviews, but given the mixed reviews I saw before hand, and how excellent everything about my meal was, I felt compelled to chime in.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
This place gets perfect marks for every aspect that makes a restaurant great. As for food, The Abbot’s Cellar is exceptional even by San Francisco’s high standards. The beer selection was fantastic and the tasting menu such a learning experience. They've succeeded at pairing beer and fine dining. The service was perfect--everyone's role was executed with professionalism. The decor was what attracted me in the first place, so I can't say enough about how warm and comfortable (and yet elegant!) it feels. Because of the old wood panels, the noise level is the perfect buzz--not so loud that you can't hear your own conversation, but not so quiet that you feel like you're in a museum. One of the most original, delicious, enjoyable meals I've had!
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
It'sabout the beer
We had the tasting menu, with four courses paired with beers. The sommeliers were spot-on with their picks and descriptions. The quality of the beers was unrivaled. The food was excellent as well.

EXCELLENT FOOD, UNIQUE SURROUNDINGS
Hats off to whomever conceived and designed this unique dining space. Barn timbers, exposed brick and stone, high rafters, open kitchen, beautiful bar....it's all there, and it works. The wait staff is well coordinated and work together beautifully. I enjoyed every bite of the taster's menu with the exception of the dessert which was badly burned on the bottom and should not have been served. The roasted autumn vegetable salad was the best I've ever had and beautifully served; the pasta course was memorable and I'd love to have some right now; the duck entree was perfectly cooked, tender and tasty. Only the pumpkin bread pudding disappointed due to the above. Beer and wine selections are excellent although I would have loved a scotch.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fantastic food and beer experience
Hands down this is one of my favorite meals ever. Everyone is there to give you the best experience. Let them pair beer and wine to your food choices.
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Go but expect to spend a lot
Great excuse to blow some bucks on trying unusual beer and great small (but a bit too small) plates. Can't opine on meat dishes, as we stuck to salad, sea scallops and ricotta gnocchi--all were great looking and great tasting, and server was very helpful on beer pairings.

Must do-Make your reservation NOW!
We were amazed. Not only was the food fantastic, but the service was exemplary. We opted for the tasting menu and it was one of the best we've ever experienced. The pairings were spot-on.

A beer lover's dream!
All of my party had an amazing time at The Abbot's Cellar. I had the tasting menu with beer pairings, my friend had the tasting menu and ordered her own beer, and my mom ordered ala carte. The tasting menu was a true foodie experience - everything was excellent, and the beer paired well. The service was friendly, quick, and knowledgeable. Their beer selection is nuts - I wanted to try everything, and we liked everything we tried. We will be recommending to all!!!
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Ton of fun.
Good food, though some of it was pretty over-salted, and my take is that not everything on the menu needs to be with bacon or a cream sauce. Need a few more veggies and grains. Best dishes overall -- lamb sirloin and halibut. Great service, and overall just a fun experience. I took a group of six that then became seven and then became eight. The wait staff was very accommodating. Will definitely go back.
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
We went with the tasting menu; my BF did beer pairing, I ordered beer a la carte so we could taste more. From the amuse bouche (pork rillettes) thru the four courses (scallop, pasta, duck, dessert) we enjoyed ourselves. Not the best food in SF, but good and the beer selection/focus made it interesting. The pasta was too salty, but we both finished it (the beer cut the salt). Pricey but the excellent service and nice ambiance (we could actually hear each other, even when the restaurant filled up) justified it.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Craft beer and food pairings!
I was happily surprised when the wait staff introduced Abbot's Cellar as a restaurant that focuses on beer and it's "relationship to food." I had the prix fixe which came with beer pairings... so cool. Each course was explained why they choose the beer and how it complimented the food/ the food complimented it. Desserts where amazing too.
PS the interior design some of the coolest I've seen in SF and they have valet

Fabulous dining experience
I strongly recommend the tasting menu with beer pairings; both the beer and food were great. I particularly liked the Punk IPA, The Anchor Christmas Ale and the duck with mushroom rissoto and kale.

A Winning Discovery
We dined at Abbot's Cellar to celebrate my husband's birthday. After seaching numerous other restaurants in the area, I settled on (A C). We were not disappointed. The food was outstanding. The starters - butternut squash soup with roasted brussel sprout leaves was delicious. I had the gnocchi with shiitake mushrooms, shell beans and kale. It was superb! though the gnocchi was a bit doughy. The entrees - pork loin and rib eye were both sublime and truly wonderful. The server paired beers for my husband and wines for me. Both pairings were spot on. The desserts- pumpkin bread pudding and sticky toffee were both excellent, though the pudding was a tad dry. All in all it was a great evening of dining. We look forward to returning.

We visited the Abbot's Cellar on a quiet Sunday night to celebrate my father's birthday. My father is quite particular and this meal was excellent. The atmosphere was quiet and unhurried, and the service was similarly measured. We did not feel rushed to order and had ample time to contemplate, which was delightful. We ordered from the a la carte menu, which featured thoughtful, seasonal offerings. The beer list was quite extensive and included tasting notes with each drink (the menu also pulls out from the table, which was a great party trick). Our server was knowledgeable when faced with food/drink pairing queries and brought tastes of wine to the table. He was also quite honest about the wine choices, which was appreciated.
11/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
It's all about the beer pairings
The knowledge about beer at this restaurant is phenomenal. The food is very good, certainly up to San Francisco standards, but the food is there to exist in combination with the beer and should be treated as such. The combined experience is equal to what can be found with the ubiquitous wine pairings at other contemporary restaurants where the pair is greater than the sum of the parts, in this case the beer and the food. Try something unique, like sour Belgian ales, or a Pilsner if you don't normally drink lagers Rely on the advice of your server and you can't go wrong.
They have a prix fixe menu with beer pairing, which was adventurous and excellent, but ordering off the menu was also highly enjoyable (we did both).
11/26/2013 4:00:00 PM
We ate with another couple on a Sunday evening. It's a very pretty restaurant and the noise level was quite low, so we could talk easily. It's really cool how the beer menu is attached to the table in a hidden compartment. The food was generally very good - for appetizers, two people ordered scallops, one had the soup and one had the sweetbreads; and for entrees, two people had the sole and two had the gnocchi. My husband said the gnocchi was delicious, but not hot enough. I thought the sole was cooked well, but could have had more seasoning. Everyone liked their beers, the pumpkin bread pudding we shared for dessert was okay and the teas came in really nice big pots. I'd recommend this restaurant.

We Heart Abbot's Cellar
We loved everything about this restaurant - the beautiful reclaimed wood decor, the genuinely personable staff, the music (vintage soul), the formidable beer and wine selection, the rustic ceramics, and the incredible food. We had a butternut squash soup with tarragon butter that was the most smooth and delicious I've ever had. Then we had a chicory salad that was perfectly balanced with candied hazelnuts, fuyu persimmons, and pomegranate arils. The ricotta gnocchi with roasted squash, chanterelles and greens were umami perfection, and the rib eye with smoked potatoes and romano beans was so perfect I almost cried. Satsuma cranberry clafouti with pecan streusel and Four Barrel decaf - perfection. We'll be back!
