We are regulars who find the food consistently excellent, and the services is always very welcoming, friendly and accomodating. We find it a very comfortable place to have an excellent dinner or brunch, with a nice ambiance. It's equally great for a special occasion or a casual "any time" meal. We look forward to may more meals at Cafe Joul.

I have been taking guests
I have been taking guests to Cafe Joul for years, as well as dining there myself on occasion. I have always found it a success with guests and a great place to go in the neighborhood. Having Cafe Joul nearby with great food and great service means that I do not have to go far to entertain friends or for an enjoyable dining experience.

The food is very good and in the right proportions. I would not mind having a starch as standard inclusion. Service is also very good. While not spacious,it does allow for private conversations.

BEST for Brunch!
Cafe Joul is our favorite brunch spot in NYC. The wait staff is always attentive and friendly. The food is reliably delicious. Their brunch, complete with complimentary pastry basket (YUM), is hard to beat. Their fresh-squeezed OJ is delish, especially in a complimentary mimosa! The restaurant is not a 'scene' like so many other popular NYC haunts. It's just a lovely neighborhood gem, never too crowded, with food that never fails to satisfy and delight.

A Real Find
Cafe JOUL was recommended by a 3rd party who lived in this neighborhood. We tried it for the first time several years ago & every time we return we are continually impressed with the quality of food and sweet atmosphere. It truly is a gem.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner with out-of-town friends at Cafe Joul. Everyone loved the food, especially the Sea Scallops special. All our dinners were very fresh, cooked perfectly, with great service and the perfect atmosphere to talk and catch up. Wine list had a lot of variety. We definitely will be back!

charming...with 2 caveats
Lovely, charming restaurant with great food but some tables seem closer together than others which given a loud/obnoxious neighbor diner can make a big difference in the atmosphere. Also, the banquettes are uncomfortable which led us to have dessert elsewhere.

The food and service are always good. The tables are close together so conversation can be a challenge if the restaurant is full.

A true French Bistro - I felt I was back in Paris. The food is delicious and is matched well with an extensive wine list.

Cafe Joul nice French dining spot.
Food, service, noise are all very pleasant, and prices are OK. I have eaten here several times an I keep coming back, so they must be doing something right.

We decided to try Cafe Joul because of its proximity to an appointment; it's not a part of town we frequent. It was a very pleasant little spot; some creative cookery on the brunch menu (goat cheese quiche over a Caesar salad; short rib hash accompanied by roasted broccoli), and a delicious variety of tiny baked goods and genuine jams for the table. Nice little touches like fresh orange juice in my Mimosa! One busy waited served the entire room, but managed to keep up a good level of service. We liked it well enough to discuss what dishes we might try on a repeat visit. Moderate noise ebbed to quiet once one large table with out-of-town guests finished and departed.

My aunt lives close to the restaurant and always notices they have a line out front. The food must be good if there's a line! We decided to try it out and it was very good! A great find and the prix fix menu was perfect. A small, quaint restaurant perfect for a small group or just for two.

I never worry bringing someone to Cafe Joul. The food is always good or better. We started off with the smoked sable salad. The varied tastes that included a citrus accent made this appetizer outstanding. The calf's liver was perfect (medium rare for me and medium for my friend) as was the herb mashed potatoes. Will go back again and again.

dinner with niece
We returned after a time away. The menu is much the same, which is good. We enjoyed ourselves. I had the salmon which was very good. The only negative was that service seemed slow this time. Not the norm, and I expect it to be the exception to the rule. We'll go again.

Fresh and Delicious
A sijmple but enjoyable atmosphere wherein we enjoyed excellent service by a joyful server who aimed to please. Pleased

Great service and good food.
Great service and good food. Reservations for two at 8:30 - we were seated promptly. A nice wine list, even though it is not extensive. DH had the tomato burrata as an appetizer - it was delicious. I had the crab cake special. It was OK. The mussels (traditional) were plentiful and delicious. The lemon sole was also very good. The warm apple tart for dessert was great. Overall, very satisfied! Nice little place.

We went on a Tuesday night
We went on a Tuesday night and had a 7:45 reservation. Many of the restaurants we walked past on 1st avenue were relatively empty. Café Joul was a full house. The food is good, but the place is small and the tables are close together. The service was so-so. Too many people for the staff size. We witnessed one table where the couple kept asking about their food and then wound up having to take the food with them as they had a date. But, our food arrived timely. The staff was very apologetic to that couple. We also witness the hostess trying to get an elderly couple to vacate their table. They had just been sitting since we had walked in and finished our dinners. She told the hostess they were still waiting for their dessert.

As always another great meal. I had the sweetbreads
last nite which happens to be one of my favorite.
I've never had better Anywhere!!
It even tasted better with a nice wine that was
recommend by a most knowledgeable and
friendly manager. I don't want to forget the wonderful
frise salad and finished with a perfect lemon tart.
Service is friendly and comfortable.
Been going since they opened and never disappointed
A must go.

I had never been before and found it very welcoming--despite the fact that in 24 hours my party went from five to four to three reservations. A short but adequate wine list. Quite good if not exceptional food. I had hoped to order the fish cassoulet, which was on the menu, but learned that they only make two a day. The waiter was very pleasant. All in all a very nice neighborhood place.

Gem under the 59th st Bridge
This is a great local eatery on 1st at the 59th St Bridge. The welcome was warm, the ambience cozy, the food imaginative, delicious and creatively presented. Make reservations because it is delightfully small.
