As long as you don't want
As long as you don't want to converse with your fellow diners, you'll do fine here. Portions are overly generous, food is interesting and okay, the place is hopping, service is friendly and prompt. Obviously, they've discovered the formula! for success.

Definitely not traditional
Definitely not traditional Mexican food, but delicious nonetheless! Get the queso fundido with chorizo, you won't regret it. :)

Really Found its Footing
My wife and I really liked this place when it opened. The food was inventive and bold. However, there were times when it was missing something--the cola braise was a little too sweet, the short ribs needed a little more seasoning, etc. We went back, though, and man, the place has really found its footing--everything was delicious! They've also lost some of the more annoying features, like the raised tables with stools and no legroom underneath. Finally, putting the bar in the other room really opened the place up. A little noisy, but not conversation-squelching.

Drinks are amazing (a bit pricey but so tasty, gran partido) with an extensive tequila selection. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. Shrimp was a bit overcooked in our Shrimp tacos but my friends liked their short rib tacos. Overall, I'd go here for drinks and guac. My first experience would have had a better food review but flavor wasn't there this time. Waitress, drinks, and good company made for a good night. Make reservations to avoid a wait.

Mother's Day Dinner
We had a large group, so understandable that the food took longer than normal. And one dish (chicken enchilada) was extremely overcooked, dry, and had burnt cheese on top. It took the waitress a while to check on us after we got our food, so by that time everyone was over half done with their meals and we just sent the enchiladas back, not wanting to wait for another dish to come out. Other than that the food was fantastic.

Mother's Day Dinner
The food was great as usual and the server was thoughtful and obviously very experienced. His section however was HUGE and at times we were left waiting for a long time, it took us over 7 minutes just to get water. It was clear that he was an excellent server and had just an impossible number of guests to attend to. I chalk it up to management not having enough people on for mother's day/ bussers not being where they needed to be (i.e. helping a busy server fill water).
The food was great as usual though I always feel like it could be a little more flavorful with a little more spice. Love the ambiance, and of course love their margaritas.

Adventurous Mex food, no pretense
I'd been wanting to try the Painted Burro for some time. I finally took my wife and daughters for Mother's Day brunch. The menu is not super-extensive, but it's imaginative without being precious and without losing authenticity. Everything we tried was delicious, and the prices very reasonable. The owner opened his own tortilla factory so he could serve tortillas just like they're made in Mexico. The decor is very cool as well. Since it was Sunday brunch, I didn't delve into the very impressive tequila selection, but it's on my list of things to do in Davis Square.

Great Apps and going back a week later for some nice taco's.
5/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Staff need to expedite more not refilling drinks or asking if refills are needed. 2nd time there same complaint. food is great , bring a water bottle.

Great celebratory dinner!
My family and I ate here after my afternoon graduation, and the Painted Burro met our every needs. Our waitress and other wait staff were very attentive and patient with our somewhat large and indecisive group. The waitress knew the menu well, and paced the orders, appetizers, and entrees very well. The food here was delicious, and I've never had anything here that I haven't enjoyed.
5/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
Love their Tacos!
Always check the specials - the special tacos have never failed us!!

Food and service are great.
Dishes are flavorful.
Good selection of dishes. Could have chosen a number of items on the menu.
You will not go home hungry.

Huge change of pace from chain-Mexican food and completely delicious. The nachos were loaded with flavor and amazing, the tacos (at lunch at least) fairly small but ridiculously tasty (my daughter loved the "BLT" taco with pork belly, salsa, romaine, and cotija cheese), and the dessert churros with Tazo chocolate dipping sauce...mmm. Great flavors. Nice selection of tequilas, beers and mixed drinks. Seems like a busy place, reservations recommended.

Painted Burro Obsession
I live near Davis Square and I am having a hard time going anywhere but the Painted Burro. I am always there for my el diablo margarita! I celebrated Father's Day at the Burro this past weekend and it couldn't have been more perfect. Our waiter Carlos was a sweetheart. He knew what to recommend and could answer any and all questions. The food is so unique and delicious. It reminds me of my time in San Diego. I thought I would never find that good of Mexican food near my home. I have to admit that I returned to the Burro later that same day to grab a few drinks with my friends.

The Painted Burro
The ambiance was very good, well decorated the noise level was just perfect. This is my second time coming here and I think they may have upgraded on several things from my first visit. I know for a fact there was a bar added which of course was very vibrant.
Everyone seemed very vibrant. But my only dilemma was, we had to many servers and it made it hard for us to tip. The service was very good but can you please just keep it to one server/waiter.
6/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
Fresh and Unique!
From the cucumber margaritas to the fresh salsa and amazing shrimp appetizer and then to steak tacos, each bite (or sip) was delicious. A fun, bright room with a friendly wait staff made the night complete. I can't wait to go back and explore the menu more.
7/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Try the specials
The menu is interesting but we were intrigued by the marinated lamb burrito on special. It was a delicious suprise and we quickly ordered a second one. I tried the cucumber infused margarita which had been recommended. It lived up to expectations . The wait staff kept us in chips and salsa without having to ask for more. I dislike loud restaurants but the acoustics here were very good. We could carry on a conversation without having to yell. My wife loved the side dish of corn. The guacomole was fresh and tasty. As we were finishing, the owner/manager came by to ask if we enjoyed the meal. The bill was reasonable but too many margaritas can easlly eclipse the food prices. All in all. a real positive experience. We will return.

Great Mexican in Davis Square
We ate at The Painted Burro before catching a midnight showing at the movie theater down the road. The food was great, as was the service. The cucumber margarita was delicious and refreshing, and they have a great array of delicious tacos to mix and match. The tortilla chips are plentiful while you wait for your food and throughout the meal, and the salsa is pretty spicy. The decor is also excellent, and the Painted Burro has awesome atmosphere.
7/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
The Painted Burro never fails. The food and service is always top notch.
7/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Painted Burro Fan
We have been to the Painted Burro on more than one occasion and found the food to be excellent and authentic each time. The staff is very pleasant and professional. The atmosphere is light / rustic / Mexican decor and very clean. Even during a packed house the service and timing was spot on.
Just a heads up...the restaurant can be a bit noisy especially on a Friday and Saturday night.
Thumbs up! Highly recommended.

One of my favorite places in Davis!
I've literally never had a bad meal at this restaurant. I've also never gone to a Mexican restaurant for brunch before (until recently), but now I have vivid dreams of the Burro Benedict. Bring your dates here if you want to impress them. (If your date doesn't like the food, it's because s/he is boring. Trust me.)
7/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Pork belly & watermelon and
Pork belly & watermelon and kale salad were highlights. El campemchano was a delicious torta. Tacos were hit or miss. Tofu enchiladas were pretty good and very spicy. Drinks were pretty tasty and service was good. Overall a nice spot that we'd return to.
7/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
The lobster guacamole was phenomenal! Get the pork belly!!!!
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everytime we dine at Painted Burro, we are always greeted with smiles and great service. The staff and management could not be better!
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fun Friday Night
The resturant was packed and buzzing (I was super glad I made a reservation!). My friend and I each had a couple of the margaritas (amazing!) and I had the ceviche special (this should really be on the menu all week, not just weekends!) and my friend had a few tacos and we were both incredibly happy. Excellent, fun place to spend a Friday!
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Traditional while unique
The menu was typical of a Mexican restaurant but brought in items not usually seen.
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love coming to brunch here - favs include the short rib tacos, horchata, fundido with the refried beans, fish taco.
7/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very Good Overall
The food is delicious and unique. I am vegetarian, and there were plenty of good veggie-friendly options. The beer list and drink menu are awesome - one of my favorites in the area. Service was very attentive. However, when I first arrived at the restaurant they told me that they "had no record of" my reservation and that it must not have gone through. I thought this was strange since I had received an email confirmation. We ended up at the bar while we waited for a table. It was a special occasion (birthday) so it was a bit annoying.
7/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Get the nachos!
The nachos are packed with so much stuff, and are not your typical nachos... It is worth going just for that. Their ceviche weekend special is also very tasty.
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food and service is always
Food and service is always good, but the cocktails leave a lot to be desired. Always feel like we're being rushed out.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
A great night
There is an extensive tequila menu. try a flight. It's a fun experience to share selections. I ordered a passion fruit mojito. That was a good choice, very fresh tasting. We ordered the el pato tamale appetizer. It was ok. My friend ordered the carne asada and I had the street cart chicken. Both were delicious. It's half of a chicken perfectly cooked. I ate as much as I could, my friend ate as much as he could, and we still didn't finish it. For dessert we had one scoop of chipotle chocolate and one scoop of mango jalapeño. Both were amazing. I loved the deep chipotle taste that paired well with the chocolate. I could taste both. The mango jalapeño led with the jalapeño.
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Some good changes to the menu
Some good changes to the menu recently--especially liking the Mexican shrimp cocktail, now that the similarly flavored ceviche is only a rare special. Seems like there's been some staff turnover lately, but service is still smooth. Until the students return tables are much easier to get, so now's a good time to take a chance.

Best "Mexican" I've had in Boston
I not sure if this place is authentic Mexican (as you'd get in Mexico) but is the best Mexican place I've had in the Boston Area since "Casa Mexico" closed (a place in Harvard Square that was replaced by Tamarind Bay (Indian) and is now closed completely).
However my palate has improved since then so I could be wrong (i.e. this place could be superior). But in any case this is more of a Tapas Mexican place rather than an entree place.
The staff is very courteous and knowledgable and the selection is great. Also the specials have always been "special" and worth getting. Make reservations, this place fills up.

Delicious Mexican in Davis Square
Dined at the Painted Burro last Friday night while visiting my son at Tufts. This is clearly the new hot spot in Davis Square but we had made reservations on Open Table in advance and were seated right away. The Painted Burro has a full tequila menu and my cucumber margarita was refreshing and delicious. The food was excellent. From the homemade chips and salsa to my husband's monkfish, my carne asada and my son's enchiladas, everything was fresh and the flavors bright. Can't wait to get back up to Tufts to go to the Painted Burro again!

It takes all kinds
I've lived in Davis Square for years and I see this becoming a neighborhood staple. While I was there-I saw families out for an early dinner when we arrived at 6 and then couples and 20-30s somethings took over at the evening progressed. We were a large group of both of those demographics having a long, multi-course meal here and the service, food and drinks were all great.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delightful brunch with very attentive waitstaff. The Kale salad was fabulous !
8/24/2013 5:00:00 PM
Great food, nice vibe
Ate here with a party of 5 on a Saturday night. Arrived on time for our 9:00 reservation, and had to wait 40 minutes to be seated, due to a party that took a very long time finishing up and leaving. When we sat down, the waitress immediately brought over two orders of delicious guacamole to make up for our extended wait. Nice!
Once we were seated, we had a great meal. Everything was delicious, from the kale salad to the nachos to the fish and shrimp tacos.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food exceeded expectations.
Food exceeded expectations. Everything was well-seasoned, flavors were not the same from dish to dish (although there was a slight over-reliance on crema/mayo type sauces), and I was very pleased that everything came with a hefty dose of vegetable. These are the only nachos I've ever eaten that felt like I was having a salad.
Drinks were slightly under expectations. Margaritas, including flavors, were well-executed, and tasted genuinely like fruit juices, not cans or mix. However, someone did not work well to balance the sweet/sour in that evening's limes. I found them slightly too acidic.
Portions are bigger than I would expect for a "normal" restaurant. Four appetizers were too much food for two people.

Worth Every Penny
Every weekend The Painted Burro is always brimming with people and now I know why. The food is absolutely delicious, the space is well-designed, and the prices are reasonable. Now that they have moved the bar into the other side of the (expanded) restaurant, there's more space and less noise. One of Somerville's gems.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food and atmosphere
Go for the food (guacamole, tacos, margaritas) and stay for the lively atmosphere. Sitting in the bar area is also really fun.

Not as Good the 2nd Time Around
I couldn't wait to take my Husband to the Painted Burro for his birthday. I had been there previously with a girlfriend and was excited to go back. The 2nd time was just a little flat. The meat of my carnitas taco was extremely dry and my husband had to spit part of his chicken taco out. He's not really a picky eater, but some pieces of grissel are too gross for anyone. Also, although the waiter was nice enough, he was just a bit too relaxed. He came by our table a couple of times and never introduced himself as our waiter. Finally I had to ask him because I thought he was just helping out until our waiter got there. All that being said I would go back; it still beats a Tex Mex chain!
10/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
The menu is not your standard tex-mex. They have a different take on America/Mexican cuisine. Creative, seasonal and delicious.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Not what I expected
Not your typical Mexican restaurant I'm happy to say. Attentive service, inviting decor
but tables are a bit close to each other which can be inviting of a conversation with
fellow diners or annoying is trying to have a private conversation
I had swordfish which was perfectly prepared ( I like my fish slightly undercooked). My husband
had lamb which was falling off the bone. I little spicier than he usually likes but unbearable. Overall
a great dining experience.

Amazing Service and Food!
My NEW FAVORITE restaurant! The staff, from the moment we walked in, were friendly, attentive, and full of suggestions. The atmosphere is cool, especially the Day of the Dead paintings! The food is incredible, the margaritas to die for.... I plan on returning many times over.

Love This Burro
Always delicious, fun place. Kale salad is excellent. Very busy so reservation recommended
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
Will go again
Went on a Monday night which was good for less crowded experience. Reservations for 6pm but probably didn't need to. Our waiter was exceptional; friendly, present when we needed him. He tried to warn me about the Nachos, which was HUGE, but I didn't listen. I took about 7/8 of it home but not sure how well nachos re-heat. Anyway, they were tasty but different with plenty of jalapenos (too many for me), cabbage, and what tasted like mole sauce in addition to the usual. My companion had a root veggie enchilada which was delicious. Didn't try the margaritas but will next time. Even partly full the place was super-noisy, with several groups of 6 that added to the din. I'd go back but try for another low-attendance night.
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
Can't stop thinking about the milanesa torta. This was my first time to the burro and I had a great time. LOVED my margarita and milanesa. Seriously cannot wait to go again.

Great Mexican Find
A different kind of Mexican restaurant.. Great food. A bit pricey.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Food was great, drinks were great, service was great (and knowledgeable!)...loved it, and will definitely be back soon!

Brunch & Loteria
Finally made it over to The Painted Burro for brunch on Sunday and it turned out they were hosting their first ever game of Loteria (Mexican bingo). Food was delicious, fun atmosphere, had a great cocktail and coffee was surprisingly good. It was quiet, given it was the Sunday after Thanksgiving (I guess most people were traveling) but still a great atmosphere. Huevos Rancheros were to die for. Will certainly head back...repeatedly.
