What a Gem!
This was our second visit in three days. That should say something about how well we were treated. The staff is wonderful and the food is outstanding. The food is locally sourced and prepared as ordered. For that reason the pace is slower than most chain restaurants, but we found that fact to be refreshing as we were not rushed from one course to another. This visit was for brunch. I had the Pain Perdu "french toast" although it was nothing like any french toast I have ever had. It was delightfully simple and delicious. My wife had the Eggs Malta which she allowed me to sample. They too were wonderful. If there was a down side it was that the prosciutto was a little stiff, but really tasty. A great restaurant that we will go back to.

My boyfriend and I found
My boyfriend and I found Cafe Malta through Austin Restaurant Week, and we are SO glad we picked them! The cocktails were petite but quite strong and very tasty. Our server was very attentive and helpful. The gnocchi gorgonzola was a satisfying start for both of us. He got the Bistro Steak with potato gorgonzola gratin; I had the Chicken Tagine Pot Pie. The steak was perfectly cooked and the potato gratin was subperb. It was so rich and had a wonderful, lush texture. My pot pie was a perfect balance of sweet and savory; the currants and figs complemented the tender chicken and tangy olives.
I love that the menu is seasonal; we'll definitely return to try some more spring dishes.

We chose to dine on a Sunday
We chose to dine on a Sunday afternoon. Reservations are highly recommended, this place gets busy fast. The restaurant is quaint, however it needs some acoustical panels for noise reduction. It is reminiscent of a European cafe. We tried the Croque Madame, and the onion tart and the lemon dessert and the flourless chocolate cake. All were delicious and very reasonably priced. The waitress was genuinely kind and thoughtful and made our visit exceptional!

Overall, very good! The food was great! My only complaint would be the booths ... very small and cramped ... moderately overweight dinner guests of ours could not fit in. I am not overweight at all and found the booth seating claustrophobically small and tight. We had to be moved to a table ... not cool. This needs to be fixed!

Good experience, great food, friendly staff. The only drawback was the service was a bit slow.

Unexpected Find in South Austin
Great neighborhood gem in South Austin. Expect a place like this in downtown.

Heaven in South Austin
They are just the BEST at Cafe Malta. I adore their wine - especially the Catalina from Chile. And the Cava from Spain. The food is always fresh and delicious.
4/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
Although we had to wait a few minutes for a table, everyone was gracious, apologized for our wait and made us feel welcome. The food was very good and the service, although a little slow, was friendly. We would eat there again.

Authentic Mediterranean restaurant!
A rare find. The owner and Chef make an effort to create true Mediterranean dishes from all over the Mediterranean basin and not just the Eastern Mediterranean as others do. The food is authentic, very fresh, and reasonably priced. Cafe Malta is our new favorite!

Try It, You'll Like It
This gem of a restaurant is easy to find in a good location. The ambience is intriquing, the food is tasty, the service is friendly, and the entire Sunday Brunch worth the effort to meet and eat there. The noise level is so low that you actually can hear the person talking to you across your table, as well as hear the other guests at your table conversing with one another. Some of my family, friends, and I savored Sunday Brunch there.. We found the ambience intriquing and relaxing, the food exquisitely prepared, and the entire staff so friendly that we felt welcomed and encouraged to relax and enjoy being together.. The one caveat is that I found the entree serving much too small for the price. The other items were properly priced.

Cafe Malta is very simply outfitted but obviously created with much attention to detail. The ceiling helped create the sense of really being 'out' for a meal. We are five elementary school teachers who are given one chance a year to enjoy lunch out. We were very happy with our choice!

Great lunch place with local foods
We chose Cafe Malta based on the Open Table reviews and we weren't disappointed. The restaurant features mostly local, fair trade ingredients. I live in CA and can drink CA wines any time so I chose a white wine from Fredericksburg. It was delicious and light. My friend and I both chose one of the day's specials: tomato-basil risotto with four prawns in it. The prawns were a tad citrus and the risotto tasted mild and pleasant. It was a little duller than i expected but still delicious. The fair trade coffee we had after was smooth as was the chili-chocolate creme brulee. The chili in its crunchy crust was a nice kick to the silky lightly-flavored chocolate. When I return to Austin, I will go here again.

Wow, what a gem!
Our Friday work lunch-bunch went to Cafe Malta this past Friday, and boy, were we in for a treat! Fresh gazpacho, crisp salads, and a variety of delicious entrees greeted us. I had never been, but fell in love from the moment I walked in the door. The restaurant was clean, bright, and open --with the beautiful painted "blue" boat scenes along one wall, the front-side windows, and a nifty bar on the opposite side. The food was fabulous, the service was excellent, and our group was in violent agreement: we'll be going there again soon! Yummy! :-)

Great Food, Great Service, Great Atmosphere....fine neighborhood place!
6/1/2013 4:00:00 PM
A welcoming feeling with excellent service and great food. We've been there three times loved the risotto shrimp special, the mussels, both pasta dishes ( especially the bolognese) and the hummus appetizer. Brought friends in for lunch and we'll be back again! Recommend the house-made lemoncello.

If I lived in Austin I would
If I lived in Austin I would frequent this restaurant. The food was good, the atmosphere was relaxed but it still felt like you were dining out, the server was attentive but not overbearing, and the sound level was comfortable. Highly recommend.
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Went here for dinner last Saturday. I had read good things but was not thrilled with the location in a lame strip mall. However, the second I entered the restaurant I had a good vibe about the place and that continued through the entire meal. They show great attention to detail with every aspect of the place. We had a great time! I had the fish of the day which was perfectly cooked Drum. Yum!

I'm Not In South Austin Anymore
Walking in the door of Cafe Malta is like a scene from the Time Traveller's Wife. But instead of traveling in time, it feels like I'm traveling to another city, New Orleans, or NYC . And maybe I'm traveling in time too because you don't see places like Cafe Malta these days, a small neighborhood restaurant with one intimate dining room, artfully done, the food changing with the seasons. It is Mediterranean inspired, and it is inspiring. I recently tried their smoked cod croquettes which were light, fluffy and addictive. And it wasn't just because my Tarantella cocktail, a delicate combination of reposado tequila, absinthe, and fresh orange juice, had wetted my appetite. Order fish, any fish. It will be good. Love this place.

That's it ... always good...very interesting menu with unique blend of ingredients. Love having this restaurant in south Austin!!!

South Austin neighborhood find
Always great and unique food at this south Austin strip center find. They have a seasonal menu and use local ingredients where possible. The desserts are a bit spotty, but entrees are always wonderful and eclectic! I had the Tagine Chicken Pot Pie the last time I was there, and it was amazing!

A Brodie Gem
Cafe Malta is a gem in the setting made at the south-east corner of Brodie Lane and William Cannon Dr. The waiter was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the food was very good. Broth of the Cacciucco was delicious, and the seafood generous. My wife reported her pork remoulade was excellent.

Treat your Friends
Cafe Malta makes me feel special: the small intimate space, the staff who welcome and serve in a relaxed gracious style, the really good food with surprisingly lovely touches. It's a great place to share with someone special.

Creativity and orginality supreme
All of the offerings on the menu show a carefully considered approach to culinary creativity with ingredients and flavors that entice the diner and with dishes that complement each other for a memorable dining experience each visit. All of this in a very pleasant and intimate atmosphere that is casual and welcoming.

Great food & service, awful dessert
The food we ordered were excellent and in the right portion size. Our toddler has the gnocchi which he enjoyed tremendously. We split the grilled watermelon as appetizer. The flavor was great and would have been excellent if it was balanced with a little more than the 2 tiny slivers of pickled watermelon rinds we got. We ordered the lamb shoulders special and the fisherman stew as our main course and both were excellent. The lamb shoulders were fork tender and the seafood was not overcooked.
With such great food, we had high expectation when we ordered the bread pudding. What a disappointment! The bread pudding was bland, hard and dried out and the strawberry sauce on top was thin and very tart. Won't order dessert again.

Our Evening at Cafe Malta August 10
My husband and I adored the food choices, had a difficult time deciding, and will have to return!
Our server, Hillary, was delightful, friendly and knowledgeable. The room became a little loud towards the end of our meal, but attribute that to a somewhat younger crowd. Highly recommend the flank steak choices and vegetable/salad choices. The wine list was pretty extensive for a small venue. We loved our choices of reds.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was creative and tasted outstanding. Nice variety with seasonal ingredients. Our server was very attentive, but lacked a good understanding of the wine menu. Despite very specific descriptions of what was liked in a wine, she was unable to choose something (even after 3 different tries) that my husband liked. He finally gave up. However, they do have a full bar with some creative cocktails and an decent wine list. Just don't rely on your server for guidance.

Enjoyed the ambience - nice
Enjoyed the ambience - nice place to meet a friend for dinner. Look forward to visiting again.

supporting austin foodies
Loved the first experience I had there, second experience not as great. Both me and my husbands entree was very over cooked, noise level was very loud, hard to communicate with each other. Used to be much more romantic, and date night atmosphere. Setup a reservation through Open Table, the restaurant didn't have our reservation but played it off and got us seated right away. They got lucky :) It'll definitely be a girls night out type of place now
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food, service, and ambiance
The food, service, and ambiance have been consistently superior during each of our more than seven visits We especially like the suggested wine pairings with the menu items. Our last visit on an extremely hot Austin evening refreshed us with a cooling Gazpacho sorbet, a grand Mediterranean Cacciucco, and thirst quenching Vinho Verde; this was further embellished by the guitarists playing homage to Django. We should have stayed all night!
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
My husband and I just moved to Austin. We love mediterranean food. The food was delicious and the wine recommendations were quite enjoyable. Sadly the seafood paella was sold out. Will try to order it another time. Our waitress was very helpful with recommendations.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
We've been coming here for over a year now and almost every time have had a very delicious meal with a great time. Definitely try the once a month tour of whatever country they feature, it's a great time!
9/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Malta is always on the top of the list when my husband and I want to go out for a nice meal. I am a fancy foodie and he is simple jeans and tee shirt meat on plate type of guy. We always find things to please both of us on the menu here. Their cocktails and desserts are also out of this world.
9/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food at Malta is consistently great and always fresh. I love the fact they have a seasonal menu to take advantage of whats fresh!!
9/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
What a great find. This place reminded us of a restaurant you might find in Paris. The food is excellent (mussels are a must as is the bistro steak) and I would definitely recommend everyone to try this place out. And if you have room for dessert . . . flan with chili is quite a treat.

Nice Anniversary Dinner
We are returning customers. However, worth noting is the fact that in addition to great food prepared and presented with style, the portions are just right. Others have commented on the food here, so I won't repeat that. Also, worth noting is that for our anniversary I wanted to have a surprise arrangement of flowers for our table during the meal and to take home. So the staff welcomed our idea of purchasing the desired arrangement then dropping it off earlier in the day for safekeeping. After we had ordered our food, the waiter delivered the flowers and the result was perfect! Highly recommended - particulary for this part of town where quality restaurants are not all that numerous, as Oak Hillers can attest.
9/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went for dinner with two friends and were very pleasantly surprised by the restaurant. It is in a strip mall and from the outside it is not appealing, however, when you walk in it is a fun, lively environment. Our food was good all around and it is great to find a restaurant of this quality that is local. Would also be great for happy hour. My only negative is that they didn't have a good Sauv Blanc or Pinot Grigio on the wine menu.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was Amazing
The Food was Amazing and the prices were reasonable. It was a good place to have a nice dinner and conversation without having to fight the Austin Live Music Obsession. The summer veggie lasagna was tasty as was the summer peach salad. The service was good without being obtrusive. Only impovement I would make would be the bread pudding it was very dry and the strawberry sauce did nothing to help it. I will definetly be back.
9/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Five ladies had lunch at Cafe Malta for the first time. Everyone raved about their food, especially the desserts. Our server was efficient, friendly and knowledgeable.

Lovely for a small celebration date
My husband & I often choose this neighborhood gem for date nights & little celebrations. They treat as special guests, and the food is as delicious as downtown restaurants, with the added benefit of no cheap poor quality fillers & additives. I also really appreciate the portion size, which is not overly large & gluttonous. More European style than American, so we are able to enjoy three courses, generally. This night, we were celebrating a business success for my husband and had a perfect time. The place was totally full; we must've gotten the last reservation thru Open Table, despite only snagging it thirty minutes in advance. Tip: In the local Community Insight newspaper, there is sometimes a coupon for a free app with 2 entrees.

Fresh casual dining
Nice, fresh food, well prepared. Good service. Nice little wine list. Only negative is the noise level - no sound-absorbing surfaces.

Surprise in a strip mall
This place is an island of good food in the sea of South Austin. We started with the PEI mussels and Crostini Di Hill Country. Both were well prepared and flavorful. The mussels were in a slightly spicy well-seasoned broth and the brisket with apple barbeque sauce Crostini were delicious. The Bistro steak was a great cut of meat perfectly prepared and the Pork Roulade was delicious though a little dryer than I like. It could have used some sauce to help it along. All together a really good meal that will bring us back. The service was outstanding.
9/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent neighborhood restaurant. Food and service is always excellent. Love the homemade hummus appetizer - light and delicious. Filete andaluza was delicious. Pork roulade had a hint of jalapeno spice.

Always a favorite
We eat at the Malta Cafe frequently. The food and service are consistently five stars; the main difficulty is limiting myself, as I would like to order more. My favorite drink is "I Can Explain Everything." The price is reasonable, given the quality of the food. It can get noisy when the place is full. You may need a reservation, especially on week-end nights.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Don't overlook this place.
I drove past it for months before finally trying it. So glad I did. The food was creative, fresh, and delicious. The wine list was reasonably priced, with many interesting offerings. Service was warm and attentive. Be sure to try the PEI mussels and the basil panna cotta.

Fabulous Little Restaurant
We've been here 3 times now and love it! The food is excellent and the atmosphere is great. I have taken my kids and one loved the ratatouille and the other thought the food was weird. If you've got a picky eater bring something for them. If not, you're kids will like the options.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
perfect birthday dinner
My brother and I treated our grandparents out for my grandma's 80th birthday. We had no problem getting a reservation the day of on a weekday. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. Their menu is comprised of local, seasonal food portioned just right. As someone who is gluten free, I was delighted by the variety of options available, and the perfect treatment of their gluten free tagliatelli. All in all, a perfect meal.

We are at the Malta a minimum
We are at the Malta a minimum of twice a month, often more. It is our neighborhood bar and restaurant. Chris at the bar is a skilled mixologist, servers are diligent and friendly (a shout out to Patrick who is a long time server there), chef is quite creative within bi-monthly themed Tuesday evenings: one a take on the food of a city/country of the Mediterranean and a fortnight later food and wine pairings. The entire staff including Nick and Jessica (the bosses) strive to make diners feel welcome. No wonder we keep going back.
11/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great restaurant in unlikely place.
It is unusual to find such a great restaurant in a strip mall, but that is what happened. Cafe Malta offers varied Mediterranean food choices, and all of them are excellent! Wine selection was also very good in this is nicely decorated restaurant. This was our first visit, but not our last. The icing on the cake was that it was reasonably priced. Not sure I wanted to share this secret because I want to be able to get in on a weekend. Enjoy the brisket ravioli and the vegetarian lasagne!
