Localvore food art
Well worth the drive from town. Do not let the strip mall like location discourage you. This is real, innovative localvore food art.

Great food if you don't have kids
The food was really outstanding. However, there were zero options for kids. I understand that this is the risk we take when bringing our son with us, but he is an adventurous eater (his favorite thing there were the clams), but he didn't even like the "plain" pizza we ordered for him. This place also seems to think it makes a good pizza as they break things down between "pizza" and "not pizza" but that was definitley the least good thing we ate. The papardelle was ridiculously good, the clams were perhaps the best I have had anywhere in Hawaii...but maybe include a few pieces of bread with this dish? Although we did order the side of bread and it was delicious as well.

Great neighborhood eatery.
Great neighborhood eatery. Plate sharing is the recommended dining. Love the grilled squid, although prefer the previous preparation. Pizzas and pastas are great. Service and wine recommendations are always on point.

We ate like Romans before an Epic Battle. Five of us- it was so good we just kept on ordering. everything on the menu and one pizza. then another pizza. and then another. then dessert. this place is so good. I wish they had a better wine selection... oh well. eat, drink, and then we die. happy. incredibly happy.

We had a delicious vegetable risotto and as always the pizza here is terrific. Prima has the best bread in Hawaii and we ordered as our starter the bread basket, which frankly we could eat as an entree. We hadn't been to Prima in over a year and have vowed to come back much more frequently. Prima has a small menu, but the choices are very imaginative.
5/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Compliments to the chef. Very inventive and delightful food, also the wine. However, the noise level is such that one can only have a shouted conversation, which is unpleasant. Outside is a bit better, but still not at all romantic, on account of the cars and passers-by.

food is excellent, very inventive, very good, soups are outstanding, wine very good at moderate prices. noise level gets a bit high. don't know why americans especially feel they need to scream when in public places.

Best on Oahu
We were here for 8 days and had dinner at Prima twice.
Amazing food combinations wonderfully presented. Staff were friendly, knowledgable and professional.
It was the FOODIE highlight of our trip. It is a place I would expect to find back home!
Many Thanks to the Crew,

Pasta, pizza(s), salads, drinks...everything we had was really tasty. Service was good. Only thing, ran out of vodka. Oh well, missing a drink without vodka didn't harm me. I definitely will be returning!!!!!
5/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
Really terrific food with great presentation .... Always a fresh take on familiar ingredients. The small plates allow you to sample a variety of items and share easily. I always leave feeling satisfied. My all time favorite - fennel panna cotta...yummy! If you are in to wine suggest you bring your own their list is not on the same level as the food unfortunately.

The food and service were very good. It was a small place and it was busy and loud. Our waiter was great and seemed enthusiastic about the menu. Seating was a little tight. Overall, we were happy with our experience and we will definitely go back.

Third time is a...
Third visit to the restaurant, and will definitely come back. Great thin crust, freshly baked (ovened/) pizzas. Place was very busy (weekend) and server forgot my initial beer order, actually started drinking the vino before I got my beer order. Other than that, the food kept coming - group of four; ordered the clams, fingerling potatoes and three pies. Had the foie french toast (appetizer!) for dessert; now that was really worth it. Been here three times... will be back again.

We enjoyed the tandoori pear, risotto, pappardelle, a pizza and finished with the sorbet sampler. We enjoyed and savored each creative and incredibly flavorful dish. The waitstaff was friendly & expedient. This is the kind of restaurant that I will return to try every item on the menu! Thanks for a wonderful meal.
6/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
We'll definitely be back, as Prima provided delicious food choices that left us wanting more. Service was wonderful, however we were a little disappointed that our server recommended a dish that she personally told us tasted great, yet when we asked what type of meat was in our pasta, she didn't know and told us that she would have to check. Really? Other than that small hiccup, our experience was exceptional! Thanks to the Prima staff for making our tummies very happy!

If not for the wood fired oven...
The restaurant is a bit small and they have arranged the seating to get as many people in as possible. It's tight, but not uncomfortable. Our reservation was honored on time, the hostess was very courteous. Service was a little slow...it took a while before the waiter first appeared and then again took a while before our drink order arrived. There were three of us...we decided to share a couple of apps...the salad was a bit small for three, frankly a bit small for two. The clams were magnificent. Above all, the highlight of this meal...and for sure for this restaurant is the wood fired pizza. Though one of our two was a bit under-done...overall, I have to say the pies were VERY authentic compared to the pies we had in Rome in March.

Pizzeria Authentico and More
An oasis of contemporary pizza napoletana in the lively beach town of Kailua. The decor is euro-minimalist with an open kitchen that showcases an enviable forno a legna. The masterfully made pizzas cooked in this wood fired oven produces a bubbly, puffy edged crust with judicious amounts of char and an interior that retains retains a popover-like suppleness. The rest of the menu is an eclectic mix of modern cuisine made with locally sourced produce that shows a range of technical and artistic ability that can appear deceptively simple but often is gorgeously presented. The main courses are a little more down to earth but expect some flavor twists. The selection of wines by the glass is also a surprising find, food friendly and succinct.

The food was great. Service was good, but could be better. Seemed understaffed.
6/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
Excellent food even for Honolulu which has an abundance of great restaurants. Great for sharing plates. Casual place next to Food land but anything but casually made food. Very reasonable prices and very attentive service. The curry pappardelle and roasted Brussels sprouts are definitely to come back for.
6/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
Second go at Prima. Pizza specials are creative with perfectly baked crusts and additional good creative dishes; but, caliber of food seems a bit pricey in lieu of minimalist setting and decor. Perhaps, reality of HNL vs. Kailua location for restaurants. But, it's one of the better restaurants I've eaten at in Kailua. Great concise list of beers, spirits, and wine. Will have to give it a 3rd try to make an ultimate decision; but, residing in Nu'uanu I may just keep going to downtown and other nearby spots...

Pizza is Amazing
Before Prima and its sister restaurant, V Lounge, arrived on the scene, pizza in Hawaii was of the run-of-the-mill, Boston Pizza variety. These two restaurants brought authentic Neapolitan pizza to Hawaii, using high quality ingredients and cooking methods, and raised the level of pizza in the state to an art form. Between the two, however, Prima is slightly better, which is unfortunate because I live in Honoluu (where V Lounge is) and it is harder to make it over the Pali to Prima than to run down to V Lounge, but when I have the time I am always rewarded by the trip to Kailua. Thank you Prima!

The Prima Kailua Experience
The food at Prima is always delicious, no matter which item on the menu you choose. However, certain dishes continue to be oversalted, and this is coming from diners who always appreciate what salt can offer to enhance a dish. The ambience is fine but the accoustics are not good. The noise level is very high and it can be difficult to to hear a conversation at your table. Still, because of the quality food offered and excellent service this restaurant definitely deserves 4 stars. Just come prepared to shout or use sign language if it's a busy night... and it usually is.

A New Favorite
Outstanding! Truly fresh ingredients and unusual flavor combinations that combined to surprise and delight the palate. We will definitely return to explore more of the menu.
6/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
My friend and I ordered the octopus, the mushroom appetizer, the meatball pizza, and the brussel sprouts. It was all fabulous! I highly recommend it!
6/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
One of a kind
Prima sets itself apart from other restaurants in Hawaii. It feels like it belongs somewhere in California rather than here in Hawaii with its interesting menu and modern design. Beautiful plating of unique combinations of ingredients that surprise and delight the tastebuds. An excellent addition to the dining scene in Kailua.

Favorite Restaurant on the Island
There is not a single thing on this menu that I've tried and didn't like. Everything is delicious! The Sopressata pizza is my personal favorite. Oh, and the Spaghetti all'Amatriciana. And the clams....and the Di Bologna pizza....ok I'll go on all day. They have a different soup of the day each day, and never repeat recipes. The wait staff is great also-- they always give the perfect recommendations and they're fun to talk to. Just make a reservation now and go check it out!
6/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
We always walk away saying 'WOW!"
The food here continues to amaze us. This is our go-to spot when we want to eat well and and be impressed. Our fave dishes: mushrooms, Curry Bolognese, the brussels sprouts, and the local squid. But then almost else everything else rocks. It's very hard to go wrong on this menu. The pizza is so good we always order one to take home. I just wish they had a more extensive wine list. We are now bringing our own - so no real problem.

Unusually good food....
I am always surprised by some dish at Prima. They can take ingredients you think you know and put a different spin on them. There are very few misses and great layering with well balanced texture and flavor. The special the other night was Mahi and Clams over Cappellini....... Delicious!
There have been some changes, no wine being served it is now BYOB, although they are still charging a $10 corkage fee which I think is high..... They also seem to have reined in the menu with less items which is not a bad thing since their specials are always amazing. And yes, they still have the fennel pannacotta. They were packed - reservations are a good idea!

Italian Food with a twist
The pappardelle bolognese with crispy curry leaves was outstanding and the best dish. Risotto had very good texture and taste. Not traditional creamy but very good. Very helpful and friendly wait staff.
Misses: Pizza crust was too salty, fennel appetizer did not taste like fennel but very imaginative and good combination of sweet and salty, peanut butter banana dessert was a good idea but not stellar because there was not enough banana and the sorbet did not match the flavors of the peanut butter, chocolate and banana.

Consistently imaginative food
The Pizzas here are really the best outside of Napoli! The menu selections change regularly and the chefs strive to use locally sourced ingredients. Some of the entrees seem a little too creative at first, but they usually work well! Try the foie gras French toast! Wow!
The restaurant recently dropped its liquor license so is now a byob place. They still charge a corkage, but I guess that's ok.
The location is in a strip mall including a grocery store, an ice cream shop and such. It's still sort of 'industrial chic, trendy'.
I'm glad I live close by. It's a great place to dine.

Never a disappointment!
My husband and I have never had a bad meal here. We usually arrive at 5:30 pm and sit at the bar. Pizza, pastas and appetitizers are always new and updated regularly. We generally frequent Prima at least twice a month. The menus offerings are great and we look forward to new offerings.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Since the last time we ate there, they changed their policy on alcohol. It's now BYOB, which we didn't know before going. They don't sell any form of alcohol any more. Fortunately, there's a good wine shop next door. Prima charges a flat $10/bottle corkage fee for wine. That's probably working out well for them, as most tables had at least one open bottle of wine visible.
The food was inventive and flavorful.
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Prima was just that!
The Funghi Pizza was one of the best pizzas we've had ... So good we went back in a few days for carry out ... Josh was a great server , we will go back any time we are in Kailua

Prima does it right!
My fiancé and I eat at Prima at least once a week and it is consistently excellent. The staff is fantastic, and the food is amazing. There isn't a single thing we've eaten that we haven't liked. Our favorites are the Sopresetta pizza and the Spaghetti Alla Matriciana. The pizza crust has just the right amount of crispness on the outside with the perfect amount of chewiness inside. And the pasta is so flavorful and cooked perfectly. We love that it's BYOB because we can bring whatever we want and aren't limited to a drink menu. We will be continuing our weekly tradition!

What a wonderful experience. Imaginative, well-crafted food. For a townie, definitely worth driving over the Pali.

The food was delicious, the ambiance was very loud and bright, and the service was great. We wanted something more intimate and quiet for our anniversary, but we are going back for lunch tomorrow.

We chose to make reservations at 5:30pm because parking in the Foodland parking lot can get pretty crazy. But when we arrived, we were the only ones there, however, within 30min the inside tables were filled. Prima is a small place right between Foodland and Baskin and Robbins and when you enter it has a warehouse kinda feel to it with an exposed ceiling w/ very little decor. Very simple and modern. Sit in the corner next to the window, you don't get as much noise. Bring your own booze at no added charge and they're nice enough to provide chillers and glasses too. Our server was very pleasant helpful and knowledgeable about their menu and was super patient when we asked her what is this and what is that.

Best Pizza in Hawaii
We are mainland transplants and were thrilled to discover this restaurant on the Windward side. This place compares well to any of the Waikiki tourist spots. The pizzas are amazing - the crust has a perfect consistency and texture. They try to use natural and organic ingredients when possible. Their beef special that night was actually grass fed! The brussel sprouts side dish are so good that my daughter will actually eat an order all by herself. On the downside, it can take a VERY long time to get your food. And if it's at all crowded - a VERY long time to get your check. They only have one pizza oven which might be one of the bottlenecks? All in all, if we want to eat out in Kailua, there's really only one choice - Prima!
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were pleasantly surprised to be able to be the first to try the new pizza special - Lomi pulled pork pizza.
It was a wonderufl & refreshing pizza- loved the lomi tomatos & finely sliced lettuce topping. The pulled pork
was very tasty and not too salty. The crust was perfect! The roasted romaine & brussel srpouts was also a good choice!

Not your average Pizza Joint
While the pizza's are kiawe wood-oven baked, they are imaginative and expertly crafted. delicious. The entrees and appetizers are always unique and tasty. They no longer serve beer, wine, or cocktails, so it's BYOB. There's also no corkage or 'glass fee', so, it works real well. Friendly waitstaff. It's in a strip mall with a grocery store... but, it's a favorite regular haunt for us. Great neighborhood place.

I had long wanted to dine here, and it lived up to its hype!

Second time as good as the first
We were looking forward to our return visit to Prima and it lived up to our high expectations. Delicious, innovative food and very gracious service.

As a young couple, we chose Prima to be our splurge for Restaurant Week and were pleased they are BYOB. We made a date of it (even tho it was Monday night) and we did get a few strange looks for our attire. As it was our first visit, we were mildly surprised by the location in a strip mall. It is Hawaii though! Even though it is a foodie place, there were many kids and lots of casual eaters. Maybe this is not the case on the weekend? Either way, we really enjoyed the menu (except for the sausage seafood cavatappi), the waiters were friendly and just the right amount of attentive, and it turned out to be a lovely evening. We will be back again, but perhaps not for a fancy date night!

Have not dined there in quite
Have not dined there in quite sometime (see last visit's comment).
Basically has turned into an upscale pizza place with several side dishes, which are still very good.
And, unfortunately, the restaurant has lost it's liquor license!! So, it's BYOB (no corkage fee).
A pizza place without beer....!?

Impromptu Dinner at Prima
It was a pleasantly surprise to see that it was still Restaurant Week, and Prima had a 4-course dinner. I loved their selections, so my friend and I decided to get one of each, so we could try 7 different offerings instead of just 4.
The air-conditioning was not working, so the 900+ degree pizza oven was very noticeable. So this hot blooded woman was sweating. Then we noticed that it was BYOB, an indication that they did not have their liquor license. Which is great for the customer, but not so good for them.
Every course was well thought of and creativity at a very high level. Loved everything and loved every bite. Prima is still a wonderful destination restaurant. You will not be disappointed.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Not just pizza!
We try peanut on the advice of some good foodie friends and local chefs. Every dish was awesome and we spied plates on our neighbors tables that we wanted to try too. BYOB is also always great.
