This is a lovely place in a terrible location - in a strip mall next to a freeway on ramp. Limited but delicious price fixed menu. Big wine list. Reasonable prices. Enthusiastic wait staff. I'd definitely go back.

I woke up the morning after
I woke up the morning after our wonderful dinner and dropped notes into all of my neighbors maiboxes saying they must go to Papilles ... tout suite. We here in The Oaks are so fortunate to have such a remarkable restaurant just steps away. We must all gather in support and embrace the excellence of every morsel delivered from the by hand of Chef Tim Carey.

Best wine list in town
As someone who loves interesting wine, but does not have a mega budget, Papilles cannot be beat. Great, well edited, biodynamic and organic wines from all over the world at reasonable prices, most around $50 (or $10 a glass). Super knowledgeable staff with an infectious enthusiasm for discovery. My favorite restaurant for wine.

Great food, fun dining experience
This restaurant has a three course prix fixe dinner with two choices per course. I was hesitant to come here even though I had heard wonderful things about them because of my severe dietary restrictions. I telephoned and discussed this with them. They have been able to accommodate me and I have had really wonderful dining experiences here. The help with wine was also spot on. This is a small restaurant where you feel you are in a dining adventure not only with your dining companions but with the staff as well.

As others may have mentioned, Papilles only offers a 3-course prix fixe. By the time my girlfriend & I arrived, they were out of one of the appetizers (and there is only one choice for dessert). So we had the option of 1 of 2 main courses...and that's it. Understandably, we were a bit annoyed by this.
But I have to say, that the meal was excellent. Great use of inventive ingredients. Scallops, truffle, baby corn, & lemongrass? It worked! Wonderful modern spins on classic french cuisine. And the wine recommended paired perfectly with the meal.
The one downside of the restaurant is that it's tiny. The open kitchen takes up half the restaurant. While this was charming, I can imagine how uncomfortable this will be in the hot LA summer.

ANother great experience
Love this gem of a restaurant. Another fantastic meal - market fresh, bright flavors and artfully composed. Also portions are just right for us. So nice to be back again - service is always such a pleasure, love the intimate café feel with the open kitchen. Wines are always interesting and varied. Definitely a go to place for us.

Our favorite restaurant in LA
We couldn't be in Paris for our anniversary, so we did the next best thing and dined at Papilles instead. Chef Tim and our waiter Andy took excellent care of us, and the food was, as always, divine. Market salad, tomato soup with chive creme fraiche, wild salmon, and cote du boeuf - I'm getting hungry again thinking about our meal! If you've never been to Papilles, note that the menu changes weekly, but you'll always have two excellent choices per course. Do what we do and order one of each so you don't miss any of Chef Tim's delicious food!

Best French Resturant in Hollywood.
This place is great for numerous reasons... It's a very small, unassuming resturant with no frills. There's no expensive hollywood decor or glitz, just a great intimate French-themed ambiance. The food here is really second to none, and priced well below what you would pay anywhere else in Hollywood. Dinner for two with wine, under $100. The prefixed menu usually offers a fish and meat entree with varying vegetable first courses. The menu is always changing, and always amazing... Definitely worth a try!

Everything was cooked to perfection
Everything was cooked to perfection and delicious, even down to the bread and butter. The waiter was helpful in pairing wines and allowed us to dine at a relaxed pace, while also never leaving us wanting or waiting for anything. Lovely all around. I hope to be back!

Wonderful food in French bistro
Papilles is like taking a very quick trip to Paris and sitting in a wonderful small French bistro. The food has that carefully executed quality of a fine restaurant. Picking a bottle of wine is fun as the reds are along one wall and the waiter will help you select just what you want. Their menu consists of a three-course prix fixe. Every single thing I have had at this restaurant has been excellent, the mark, for me, of a really good restaurant. It is in a lowly strip mall with a sign that is a bit hard to notice. But once inside it is a very congenial place to be.

I want to spread the word about this place because they deserve to prosper but at the same time want to keep it a secret so I can go any day of the week. It's simply amazing: the food and especially the staff.

The food is always good, fresh,
The food is always good, fresh, and well prepared. Papilles reminds us of many restaurants of this type in France (c. 30 seats, limited menu, the cook and one other in the kitchen plus one or two on the floor), and it's great.

It was Bastille Day, it was the French Onion Burger. Divine dinner, divine evening!

Papilles is a small unassuming room in a strip mall in Hollywood. The food was all delicious and the service casual and pleasant. The food is substantially more elegant than the room.

what a achef
Papilles is consistantly ambitious and satisfying. Location is NOT a plus
the corn veloute was sublime

I have never written a review;
I have never written a review; however, because of superior experience I received on Saturday night, I am more than happy to write a review.
This place is hands down fantastic. If you are a foodie, you will fall head over heels in love with this hidden gem. I was utterly blown away with the cold corn soup appetizer I consumed. I was so obsessed with this soup, that the chef brought me a soup to-go. The smoked bass for dinner with breathtakingly soft, and required just a fork. I slipped into a trance with every bite.
I could not speak more highly of this restaurant. The small dining room is perfect for anyone who enjoys exceptional food and great company.

7/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
The restaurant is hidden away in a corner of a strip mall. But once you find it, you won't forget it. The food is great - when we were there it was a prix fixe dinner. And the service was perfect. They have only about 30 seats, so reservations are a must.

A Tiny Treasure
Was very impressed by every aspect of the restaurant. There is a 3 course pre-fix dinner, with 2 choices on the appetizer and the main course. You can always check their website or call ahead to see if the choices suit you. We had fish and lamb, both were outstanding. The service was friendly and professional. This is a very small, intimate place, good for conversation. Will definitely be coming back!

Voulez-vous manger avec moi?
I hesitate to write a review on this place because I want to keep it a secret. The first time I went to Papilles I had such an incredible experience - from the dining to the maitre d, waitstaff and chef (who came out to talk about the meal with us), I decided it was time for another special evening. Once again, Papilles delivered on everything - from the octopus appetizer to the halibut and lamb (I ordered the lamb... OMG), and closing out with cheese and chocolate pot de creme - I'm still thinking about it. Love Papilles, keep it going!

Tanatize your taste buds!
Excellent food. Open kitchen allows you to watch chef cook your dinner. Intriguing prix-fixed menu. Definitely a hidden gem.
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great place for dinner Prix fixe dinner - with two choices for starter and main. Cooked to the Chef's preference, as it should be.
very accommodating and friendly! Cute place in a out of the way shopping center. Can't wait to to see what is coming up on the menu to go back. As a hollywood local, happy to have this kind of place in the neighborhood!

A lovely diamond in the rough
Papilles is truly one restaurant I would never have tried without Open Table. It's situated in the corner of a completely unremarkable retail strip near the onramp to the 101. The room is tiny and tables are close together. BUT--it's a pretty remarkable restaurant. The fixed-price menu ($41 when we went) had exactly two appetizer choices and two entree choices, with a cheese & dessert course. You might want to call to see what's on the menu. (There was also one additional choice of a pate add-on, which is expensive but delicious.) The preparation was excellent and the food was delicious. You select your wines (mostly obscure French, very reasonably priced) from the bottles displayed along the wall.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great as always!
We love this place! Outstanding food, interesting wines that you won't find on every wine list in town, and a cozy atmosphere all combine to make this one of our favorite hangs. Since the menu changes weekly, it's always a delightful surprise (although we can peek at the website if we get it together enough to do so). This time I had the traditional frisee salad with lardons and a soft-boiled egg, while hubby had the BEST OCTOPUS EVER. No, really, it was. Tender and flavorful, not at all chewy like it usually is - I would come back just to have that again. And will. For sure. Go here, you will become regulars too.

This place is always good, but we had a particularly outstanding meal there this time.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
When you first arrive don't expect much. If we hadnt seen the big Papilles, we would have thought google maps was malfunctioning again. But it wasn't instead it brought to a place where all foodies go to die. The ambiance is sort of hole in the wall turned chic, but the food kills. Honestly one of the best meals I've ever had. This place is definitely a must!
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Terrific little place
Don't be fooled by how it looks on the outside, charming place inside. Feels like a chic little European village restaurant.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Foodies should flock to eat here
Papilles consistently provides a fantastic dining experience--wonderful food, friendly and attentive service, interesting wine choices, and all at a ridiculously prices. Unbelievable value for money. This is a place that has the intimacy and friendliness of a neighborhood restaurant but the food of a destination restaurant. Foodies should FLOCK to eat here.

Great food, inconspicuous location
It doesn't look like much from the outside---just a stone's throw from the noisy 101 freeway, in a nondescript mall at the ugly intersection of Franklin + Argyle---but the food was surprisingly good, and the service was top-notch. My girlfriend wanted a Diet Coke and they didn't have any---so the waiter walked to the market next door and actually bought her a bottle (and charged us $3, but that's fine, it was the effort and willingness to be flexible that impressed me). Head waiter was very friendly without being intrusive.
9/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Perfect spot for me and my 3 foodie friends. One of the rare establishments that understand great creative food, customer service and how to serve up a memorable meal. The menu allowed us to we order one of everything and share so we wouldn't have food envy! Great extra to have chef Tim come out to chat with his diners and have a staff, especially Manny, that actually knows about the food they are serving. Not sure why it took so long to come here.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing food at this friendly restaurant. Love it.

Fun place, not for everyone
Fashioned after a Paris restaurant of the same name, it's a great restaurant but not nearly as good as the original. Service is excellent. The food is always good, but of varying levels of excitement. We've skipped it many weeks when the menu looked too dull. Cheese and dessert are generally winners. Corkage fee of $25 is seriously excessive especially considering they don't sell many (any?) older wines and there are only 4 wines by the glass available (plus a dessert wine or two). My biggest complaint is the atmosphere. It just doesn't pull off that quaint, crammed tables, lively noise, Paris feel that they are shooting for. The place seriously needs a new ceiling. Not the kind of thing I'm usually thinking about, but it's that bad!
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best french bistro
This is really a great place. Chef Tim really knows how
to cook! The scallops were beyond perfect. The lamb was
Tender and flavorful. They Mushroom soup was excellent and
The pear tart was delicious. We will be back next week!
10/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
I had heard it was good from friends whose opinion I trusted but it was unexpectedly good. We aren't usually into prefix menus because we can be fussy and while we like to think of ourselves as foodies the truth is we like good food but not necessarily adventurous food. We found the offerings to be adventurous enough even for foodies who like surprising flavor and texture adventures without being unapproachable for the fussy less adventurous palate.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
The location and the exterior don't look promising, given that the location was a former Rafallo's Pizza. But persist and inside you will find a bistro that looks like it was straight out of the Marais in Paris. The food was excellent and the service was friendly and professional. The quality of the food for the price was surprising, and rare in Los Feliz/East Hollywood. The chef, Tim Carey, makes you feel that he is cooking a special meal for you. We will be back. Oh, also one tip: the parking lot gets full, but if you continue west (towards the freeway ramp), you can turn right on Argyle and park on the street.

A true Bistro
We ate at Papilles prior to attending Pantages theater while visiting LA. Early reservation so we were first customers on a Thursday evening. Wonderful food and service and most interesting wine 'list' , just their collection on one wall. It is prix fixe, but perfect for what we wanted.
Would go again if back in Hollywood area

Papilles... C'est Si Bon!
Truly a hidden gem! This was our fourth visit to Papilles. The first was for Valentine's Day, the second for an anniversary, the third for New Year's Eve, and this time, it was for my birthday. We've never eaten the same meal twice, which is both a delight and a tragedy; the ever-changing menu is exciting and refreshing, but you'll always yearn for the dishes you've had before as well! This time around I had market squid with spanish chorizo & golden raisin; pork belly with yam, butternut squash, cameo apple, wilted kale, & jus; and ended on a perfectly balanced cheese plate and a chocolate pot de creme. Between the amazing food and the warm, charming ambiance, I can always count on Papilles to put me in a good mood with good company.

Great food, Good value
This was our second visit to Papilles, and we enjoyed it thoroughly again. The room has a warm, lively atmosphere. The service is very good but comfortably casual. The food was excellent.

Located on a little shopping center at the foot of a Hwy you 1st think you made a mistake! Papilles is a casual bistro serving a very fresh and tasteful cuisine. Selection of 2 appetizers and 2 entrees makes it easy to choose from . No winelist but the bottles can be handpicked directly from the shelves . Best quality for the price in LA .

Casual spot serving excellent prix fix menu. Great sweetbreads starter the night we were there. Casual but friendly service. Would not be out of place in Paris...

The Hidden Hollywoerod Gem.
I love this place. Papilles, gives your taste buds great fun! The kitchen and dining room are in the same room, so you get to see the chefs hard at work! The dishes change weekly based on the produce, so you get something new and exciting everytime you go, thrilling :)

Papilles is a Gem
My favorite restaurant in LA. Every dish is hand made with love from Chef Tim. The food is so fresh and full of flavor. If you live on the East Side than Papilles should be your second home.
11/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food was absolutely amazing. Had an excellent dining experience as well. Love their French cuisine. Very satisfied and will definitely be back.

This is the second time I
This is the second time I went to Papilles, and I loved it again. The food is outstanding and consistently interesting without being precious or fussy. Presentation is lovely, portion size just right. The kitchen is right out there in the room where you can watch and interact with the chefs . The servers are informed and helpful without being intrusive. It is a warm atmosphere, friendly and charming. Everything a special night out should be. Parking can be a problem but it is well worth the trouble.

The food is so delicious!
The rib eye was cooked to perfection. The butterscotch and caramel dessert was a delight! My husband loved the fish ( I was worried for a moment he would lick the plate). Going back soon. Tim is such a marvelous chef. Very lucky to have him in the neighborhood and kudos to the wait staff. It is truly one of the best restaurants!
