Our new favorite
My husband and I have been to First and Sixth twice now and both visits were wonderful. The ambience is graceful, the food is outstanding, and the music is wonderful. Their shrimp & grits rivals any in Charleston, SC which is the home of shrimp & grits. This is our new favorite restaurant.

Delicious Easter brunch...my favorites, sausage gravy with homemade muffins, the best shrimp and grits and chocolate cake! There was the option to order an omelet and make your own bloodie marys :) the setting is a historic hotel...restaurant named after the hotel and the first and sixth governor of Virginia...Patrick Henry! Service was very good; looking forward to our return!!

Try the Oysters
We were the only diners in the restaurant (7:15 reservation), so were a bit concerned at first. No worry! This is an excellent restaurant and I would return in a heartbeat. Try, in particular, the oysters bienville; they are special!

We have been to the restaurant
We have been to the restaurant several times and the food and service has always been excellent. It is our favorite place to go in Roanoke and we plan to return again and again.

Overall, I was very impressed
Overall, I was very impressed with First and Sixth and look forward to going back soon. This was our first visit and the Rockfish in particular was great. Our only complaint was the portion size of the Dr. Pepper pork tenderloin...we were told 9 oz, but it couldn't have been more than 4 oz...not at all sufficient or comparable to the other entree sizes (and one person got a filet at our table!). It's genuinely a small blemish on an otherwise great night. Parking on the street is not as ample as the ad suggests, but there are pay lots around the Patrick Henry. Definitely will return and hope others begin to find this gem in downtown Roanoke!

Our first experience...
After a long week, we found a babysitter and tried out First & Sixth. We got there around 9pm. As soon as we walked in they knew it was us and we're seated immediately. Great setting, very modern and a great, mid-sized bar. Corinne was our server and did an excellent job. It was the best service I have had in a really, really ling time. The food was great too, we just did a couple of appetizers. You should definitely give this place a try, beer you will end up coming back!

Mother's day 2013
The food and service were great on a busy Mother's day. The Buffet had plenty of choices for Brunch and the food was fresh, hot and did not run out.

Our group of ten enjoyed this
Our group of ten enjoyed this restaurant, the menu has a variety of options to fit various tastes, appetites and price ranges. The coffee crusted scallops were perfectly cooked and seasoned, crab dip was tasty as was the duck bruschetta. I ordered the Inner Harbor crab cakes and they had lots of lump crab with little filler. Many in our group chose the NY strip and enjoyed their steaks. Overall a great dining experience in downtown Roanoke.

We travel to Roanoke from Boston once or twice a year and enjoy sampling the restaurants. This was our first visit to FIrst and Sixth and we were delighted. Our dinner began with our waiter, Kevin, giving delightful and helpful recommendations from the menu. The Coffee & Brown Sugar Rubbed Scallops, Leeks, Bacon, Saffron Beurre Blanc were delicious. The Grilled Virginia Rockfish Over Lemon Mascarpone & Asparagus Risotto was superb. The low country shrimp and grits with Tasso gravy put us on a mission to try and duplicate the dish at home.

My husband and I had dinner at First and Sixth and had a pleasant experience. We have dined here once before and already knew the food was good. We started with the mussels as an appetizer, as well as the "Lollychops" that came with the most delicious grits I've ever had. The mussels were supposed to be P.E.I. mussels, but our waitress said they were out and had to "borrow" some from a nearby restaurant. When we asked if they were P.E.I. mussels, she said they were, but I seriously doubt they were to be honest. My husband got the burger as an entree and it was very good and perfectly cooked to his instructions. I had the steak frites. I was a bit disappointed, as the steak came already chopped up and was dry. Overall, good food.

I had heard many great things
I had heard many great things about 1st and 6th and was excited to try for myself. The staff was knowledgable and the food was outstanding. I had the mahi mahi and the flavors were outstanding. I will be back and I look forward to trying brunch.

Best kept secret
We are from Charlotte so we are not familiar with Roanoke restaurants downtown. Someone we knew recommended First and Sixth. We were a group of 6. We started with wonderful scallop appetizers. I had a delicious wedge salad. We had a variety of dishes and we all gave the food two thumbs up. Delicate fish flavors, wonderful duck confit and my son said his $12 burger was perfection.... accompanied by horseradish fries. Our waiter was attentive and very friendly.
We also had the best risotto that I have ever had and we had just gotten back from Italy. It was creamy... just a slice of heaven. I had asked other people in town if they had been and they had not heard of it. Go and enjoy!

One of Roanoke's Finest
I've dined at First and Sixth several times, and have never been disappointed. The beet and goat cheese salad is a favorite, and the crab cakes, chock full of jumbo lump are heavenly. I'll be back!

First and Sixth is an upscale restaurant in a fabulous historic building in downtown; what's not to like?? We ordered a bottle of Local wine and each had the roasted beet salad...then the inner harbor crab cakes....lots of crab meat ; delicious!! I traded the grits for the succotash...best I've ever had :) and we finished with coca cola cake...definitely a favorite!!!!
Service was excellent; the perfect setting!!!!!

One of Top 3 Restaurants Downtown
Neck and neck with Frankie's as the best restaurant downtown in my opinion, depending on your mood. If you feel like a great steak experience and consuming four lbs of butter (which I occaisionally do), Frankie's is the place...If you want true culinary experience, its First and Sixth. Also, the lounge upstairs is a fantastic space for a pre-dinner drink.

The food and service was absolutely wonderful!!! The only bad thing was that there werent many people when we were there, which was sad because it is such a wonderful place!

Great food, great service
My wife and I visited this restaurant for the second time. The food is fantastic, the service impeccable. My wife had the Lobster Pot Pie and I had the Grouper. Both dishes were superbly presented and tasted wonderful.
The atmosphere was very quiet and romantic.
I would recommend the restaurant for special occasions.

Very nice, excellent service, not rushed, able to enjoy peaceful dinner and time togther. Eggs Benedict with Crab Cakes were cooked to perfection and delicious. Strawberry pancakes were also delicious and very enjoyable. Very clean.

You owe it to yourself to try out First & Sixth. The food is excellent, the staff attentive and helpful and the decor inviting. We especially liked sitting in one of the booths available. Be sure to try out the scallops appetizer and the mousse/pudding dessert.

Great dining experience
4 dining companions out to celebrate a special birthday. Food was well above average. The New York strips seemed to have an extra bit of Griselda but still good. Lobster pie was tasty but a small portion for a hungry man. The crab goat cheese dip and scallops were fantastic appetizers. Pick the pear salad over the beet salad, wish I had. Service was great but loud patrons at the bar made for difficult conversation. A nice restaurant for a special occasion but rather expensive for weekly dining although they do have small plates which we may try at a later date.

Good Food, Great Service!
Went for our anniversary and had a wonderful time. The roasted beet-goat cheese salad was delicious, bread perfect We had the Hunter's Grill, consisting of duck confit, pork belly and a special sun-dried tomato chicken sausage. The pork belly was delicious and tender, done right. The sausage was a bit too salty, less when eaten with the accompanying tomato sauce. The duck confit, though flavorful, was too chewy and stringy, not the melt-in-your-mouth quality duck confit normally has. Our other entree was the peppered duck breast. Served medium-rare, it was perfect. The bleu cheese grits were absolutely wonderful and the best addition to a duck breast that I've ever had. Our server, Kevin, was awesome! All in all, great evening!

Brunch with the Girls
We had not been out in a while and decided to go for a Sunday brunch. After reviewing our options, we decided to try First and Sixth. So glad we did! The food was excellent, the server superb, and the restaurant gorgeous. We loved the Poinsettias mimosas. Would recommend it highly to everyone.

Great Place for a Special Occasion
The waiter was wonderful? Prime rib was excellent (the special). Also, wine was excellent. Great place for a quiet evening!

I truly enjoyed eating here! The food was great and the service was outstanding! Nice romantic atmosphere! Only have one thing that needs to be improved to complete circle. The seating in the booths. The seats are a bit to far from the table. I had to lean forward most of the night to engage in convo. Setting all the way back just was to far away to have a conversation and not have the feeling that I was yelling. It also was a problem when eating..After about 20 min, my back started to hurt from bending forward I had to do....Otherwise everything was five star! A great place to hit up for some fine dinning! Will most certainly be making another visit soon!

A great find
In my travels it can be hard to find - "fine" dining. This is a gem and I look forward to relaxing here after a long day of traveling. I would recommend this place to the "locals" and others looking for "Chef" quality flair............we'll be back.

It was a very quiet mid week dining experience as we were the only people in the place at 5PM. Our waitress handled my wife's food allergies well and the lobster pot pie was excellent. Would highly recommended for a romantic evening out or a special occasion.

Entertaining Alumnus Classmate
Virginia Tech classmate came in from out-of-town for weekend. This was a superb spot for entertaining our group, having a great meal, and visiting at the table. This is a first-class dining destination in Roanoke. It was wonderful to show off the superb Patrick Henry renovation.

Last Minute Group of 10
We made a last minute reservation for a group of ten. The restaurant wisely but the group in a separate room that can be closed off from the rest of the restaurant. In this group there were 6 separate checks which they gladly did, albeit with a 20% gratuity added. The serve earned every bit of the gratuity. The food was quite good with a range of choices that everyone seems to appreciate.

Quiet and delicious
My two requirements for a romantic evening out at a restaurant, First and Sixth was quiet and the food was delicious. The ambiance was great, not too busy, but just crowded enough to not make me think twice about the place. We ordered the crab/goat cheese and crostini appetizer. Delicious and more than enough for two people. As for entrees, I ordered the crab cake dinner with cheese grits and bacon brussel sprouts. The flavors were divine and my dinner mate finished off my plate for me! My dinner partner in crime ordered the grouper which he said was good, but not as good as what I had ordered.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
Shrimp and grits with Tasso gravy was as good as I have had. The Chesapeake Benedict was very nicely done as well. Excellent bernaise sauce wither the eggs over crab cakes and topped with lump crab. Top that with a good Bloody Mary bar and excellent coffee and you have a well done brunch.
The service was knowledgeable and well timed. Will definately go back.

1st and 6th - good preconcert dinin
Our group of 6 hit the 1st and 6th for a pre-concert outing. The bar staff was very helpful and attentive. Beer selection was good, and the appetizers arrived quickly and were quite tasty (oyers on the half shell, especially). The meal was a touch pricey, but quality was very high. Service was very good as well with plenty of attentive staff. Recommended dishes from the group (and from friendly folks eating at the bar): rack of lamb, Carolina grouper, crab cakes, and beef medalions. Excellent location in dowtown Roanoke -- pay it a visit. Only oddity was that reservation service said there were not any at the time we originally selected, but at that time restaurant was not nearly full.

Brunch with Bloody Mary's
Four of my girlfriends and I recently visited for the Sunday brunch and were quite pleased with the food, the service AND the beverages. They have a bloody Mary bar (or you can have the bartender prepare them for you) that was well stocked with all the fixings like horseradish, hot sauce, olives, etc. Three of us enjoyed the Chesapeake Benedict which included TWO crab cakes with a side of house potatoes. One orders the Sunday Special Pancakes which happen to be strawberry and not only where strawberries served on the side but they were in the batter. Another had the special omelet of the day which was one of the largest omelets I have ever seen. It was a wonderful Sunday brunch and I would highly recommend it.
