Best hamachi appetizer ever!
Best hamachi appetizer ever! Service was lacking, but most restaurants of this size tend to lack in service. Portions are small but you can taste the quality! Will be back!!

Hungry Cat Satisfies!!
Hungry Cat was Great. The seafood was amazingly fresh and flavorful (Raw and Cooked). If they have the fresh Sea Urchin ORDER IT! It is wonderful. They have a few beef / meat dishes on the menu as well. I had the Pug Burger which I understand from a friend has won accolades in LA as well as nearby. It was one of the best burgers I have had. Thick, juicy, full of flavor and literally juice will run down your arm.
Will go back for sure. Try it.

It doesn't seem like they
It doesn't seem like they manage their reservations very well. We didn't get seated until 20 mins after our reservation, and I noticed the same thing happened to another party. BUT the food made it all worth it. We ordered the clams and chorizo for him and braised octopus with squid ink pasta for me. Everything was SO YUMMY.

I've been a fan of Hungry
I've been a fan of Hungry Cat since David Lentz opened it. The menu and quality have been consistently satisfying since, and our server was a pleasure.

completely worth it.
I love this restaurant because it looks very neighborhoody, isn't precious, casual vibe, yet the food and cocktails are TOP DRAWER.
Had the best Hamachi appetizer ever, crazy good fried chicken sandwich, Only on the way out did I notice it is associated with Lucques in LA, which explains a lot. It's one of three in a chain, but you'd never guess it. The tab can add up if you each have a couple of their killer cocktails, but I'd go back in a second.

Love this place!
The food and service make The Hungry Cat a must every trip to Santa Barbara.

Made reservations but we got there so early that they were able to accommodate us at our leisure. Master mixologist JT guided us through the specialty cocktails and wine lists, which were off the beaten path. Why feature the same things that all the other joints do?
The Black Cod was excellent, as were the Red Snapper. Well prepared, they were presented in excellent style although the Snapper looked higher-zoot than the Cod. Perhaps it's because the Cod is a staple of the menu, while the snapper was a special.
A great time, we'll be back!

like a NYC restaurant. great bar, nice BTG wines. Seafood is great, simple menu. service is spotty (SB syndrome). a family favorite

Lunch was delicious
A friend from out of town and I went here for the first time. We shared the special appetizer, a scallop ceviche, and it was very good. I had the special red snapper for my entree and it was cooked to perfection, light and absolutely delicious! My friend had a fritatta with oysters and she enjoyed it tremendously. I made reservations but didn't need to for lunch... only 3 other tables and a couple of people at the kitchen bar. I don't know why it wasn't busier as the food is fabulous. Maybe it is more of a dinner place? I will definitely come back.

We have been to Hungary Cat many times when visiting Santa Barbara. It's always a reliably delicious meal. Not fancy at all, and a limited menu, but the food is delicious and always perfectly prepared. I called for a reservation when we decided to stay over on our trip home to Paso Robles, and was told the only reservation I could have was for 8:30 pm. We declined and checked into our hotel thinking we'd find something else. On a whim, I looked at Open Table and found a 7:45pm reservation. Throughout our meal, there were off and on, at minimum four tables available. This I'll never understand. Regardless, the moral is to always look on Open Table for a reservation! And, the food at Hungary Cat is reliably delicious!

After dining at some of the "fancier" and more scenic spots in the area on our vacation, we took a friend's recommendation and went to The Hungry Cat. We booked the reservation online and were seated within 5 minutes of arriving on a very busy night.
The food was incredible. Everything was delicious, fresh, and interesting from the scallop ceviche appetizer special to the snapper stuffed with fennel and the chocolate bread pudding at the end.One of the best meals ever! Great spot! Very friendly service too.

go for the seafood platter
if that's your thing; it was delicious; rest of the menu was pretty limited

Late Night Dinner
Our dinner at The Hungry Cat was delicious. Fun setting, interesting food. We were in the little area away from the main restaurant, so it was quiet, but didn't feel like Siberia.

I love this place!
Every time I visit Santa Barbara, an experience at The Hungry Cat is a must. From the amazingly fresh raw bar to the perfectly cooked fish, this place is not to be missed. The wine list is pretty stacked and the drinks are always balanced. I can't wait for my next visit!

Just great! Fish market kind of feel with open kitchen and open doors. Food was just great!

Great Food! Great Experience!
Always liked Hungry Cat in Hollywod - now I like Hungry Cat in Santa Barbara! Simply put, the cooking here is top-notch. Seafood is super fresh, the preparation is original and unique, the flavors often sing when put together. The room is ok, the restaurant is not in some great spot in Santa Barbara, but the food so stands out that it's now one of the top restaurant choices for me when I'm up there. Also, the service was attentive and friendly - just perfect for the ambiance of the room. I can heartily recommend this restaurant!

The one tier seafood platter was fantastic. It comes with clams, oysters, mussels, crab legs, shrimp, and dipping sauces. Quality and portions great. Enough to split between 3 people.
For an entree, the fennel stuffed snapper is a good choice. The dish is a good mix of flavors and well prepared. Although the snapper was good, the pan roasted white bass was AMAZING. I have no idea how they make the corn puree, but it is wonderful. You definitely won't be bored with the food here. Everything was interesting and delicious.
Only downside was the noise level and bar scene. On Friday night the small restaurant gets a little crowded with people congregating around the bar. Luckily they disperse by ~8:30.

Comfortable and cozy atmosphere!
Within walking distance from Paseo Nuevo Mall in Santa Barbara. Had the best mussels! If you're visiting SB, I would recommend that you try this place, especially if you are parked at the mall.

Excellent dining experience
Our short visit in Sta. Barbara made it complete with out dining experience at Hungry Cat. Our fristo misto was excellent, maybe less batter next time, the heirloom tomato, watermelon, arugula, opal basil, persian mint, with watermelon vinaigrette was so refreshing, and the clams with chorizo was amazing. All paired with vermentino, made it all satisfying to our palate!
The apple beignets to finish is a must too. We love to share different dishes, to make it more like a tasting menu.
Will definitely go back with out next visit to Sta. Barbara!

Delicious, fresh fish and seafood creatively prepared. The scallop ceviche was fabulous. The wine list features numerous varietals from all parts of the globe.

Corner of delight
This downtown corner bistro never disappoints. Fresh oysters, locally sourced fish snd creative chef's make this casual hip place a must visit when in in downtown SB. Sometimes there is a wait for a table but it's worth those few extra minutes. Great staff.

Go for the Fish; be tempted by more
Really interesting menu that takes some time for first timers to review. Everything fresh and artfully plated. A perfect spot for a quiet lunch with a friend.

Have been here a few times
Always enjoy the service and food. Halibut was superb and I finally tried the Pug Burger - one of the best burgers I've ever had. The right balance of a quality piece of beef, a toasted bun firm enough to hold it all together, but not too big - just the right balance of flavors.

The (raw or marinated) starters are the always the best. Also love the mussels w/chorizo. Yum.

<3<3<3 this place
I can't get enough of the raw seafood from Hungry Cat. Admittedly I would like to have a grilled lobster or a whole steamed garlic crab with some noodles but their selections keep me satisfied!
9/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Loved the hungry cat. Would go back just for the salad! I had halibut and the others had snapper. All we outstanding. Great flavors. Want to go back and try burgers and chicken sandwich. The only negative was that the wine serving seemed short and was expensive. But I would go back.
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best sea urchin I've ever had: straight from the shell.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great spot for innovative seafood.
Small, bustling, and popular, the Hungry Cat offers up some innovative fresh seafood dishes and fun house-made cocktails. While there are a few other items on the menu (a fried chicken sandwich...?) you really come for the seafood. Good spot for a date night out, but there aren't many "cozy" tables (in fact I don't think there are any two-tops that aren't in the middle of the dining room). The staff is great, with helpful menu tips, and very efficient and quick service (too quick at times for a couple wanting to linger over dinner). The wine list is not extensive, with one or maybe two selections per varietal, but the choices available work well with the food. Expect to spend $100 per person if you do apps and entrees with wine.

One of SB's finest
The Hungry Cat is one of Santa Barbara's best restaurants! The ambience is simple, modern and clean. The staff is always attentive and friendly yet non-intrusive. But the food and cocktails are the stand out here. Excellent quality of fresh and locally purveyed ingredients. These ingredients are combined and prepared in ways that make those elements shine. Seafood is the star at the Hungry Cat... The freshest of oysters...usually at least three varieties....the freshest fish and shellfish such as urchin, spot prawns or halibut, depending on the season. Just picked greens and vegetables from our abundant Farmer's Market. Each and every dish is prepared and plated beautifully and generously. Thank you Hungry Cat...you never disappoint!
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Hungry Cat doesn't grab your attention when you first walk in - it feels like a modest neighborhood pub. But the elegance of the cooking belies a deeper commitment to its patrons . Being small, one gets the sense of individual attention to each dish. Our server was super sweet and sincere, and attentive. The manager was also actively involved, making sure everyone was happy. The oysters were excellent, as was my whole fish.

Fantastic meal. Seafood so
Fantastic meal. Seafood so fresh it tasted like it was just plucked from the ocean!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
It was GREAT! The service was first class and the food, drinks, dessert - the whole experience was outstanding! I would heartily recommend this place, if you have never experienced it I strongly suggest you give it a try!

Cat was fed!
We had the 2 tier of Seafood, and it was splendid. Had enough fresh flavorful seafood that was very good. They let the Seafood speak for itself, but did have a couple of really good sauces on the side. I am stickler for drawn butter for Crab and Lobster, the only thing missing.
Jeff was a great server and though I missed the name of the other staff member that helped us, we were treated to a very nice meal. He was attentive to our needs, and even brought more sauces he saw getting low. Kept taking our trash bowls.
Had a great post celebration for a marathon ran!!!

Nickle Dime Diner
While the food is very solid and among the best in Santa Barbara, the culture of the place is a bit troublesome. The wonderful ceviche is served with a handful of tortilla chips. the water asked me if we wanted a few more when we ran out. "That will be $2". The waiter came back and asked if we needed more bread to soak up the wonder jus in our lamb n' clam. "That will be $2". Both the waiter and our group were embarrassed and joked about being charged for our chairs. It seems the owners are attempting to squeeze every nickel and dime from the clientele at the cost us not wanting to return. Alas we will. But we hope the management has the foresight to allow the wait staff the flexibility to do what is right.

Love it / don't like the noise leve
I've eaten at the HC several times -- lunch, dinner and just for drinks. This last time was the special dinner for the "AOC Cookbook" launch.
- Food well prepared and presented; portions well sized
- Service is pleasant, competent... even if acting a bit rushed
- We refused the table by the open front door; no problem to be moved
- It is loud, loud loud (Maybe I'm just too old to appreciate the lack of softer acoustics)
- I find their desserts to be their weakest offering
WILL I GO AGAIN: Absolutely!
