Loud but Delicious
Great food and great service. Definitely loud to the point that carrying a conversation proved challenging but highly recommend.

Delicious food, imaginative menu
This was our fifth time here -- and it was as good as all of the other times, which is to say fantastic. We love the fusion cuisine, the excellent drinks menu, the people-watching, the energetic vibe, the superb service, and the very fair prices. We'll be back!

Unique and delicious
Took my lady here for her birthday. Three Chili Margarita might be the best I've ever tasted. Drink/beer list is small but varied and reasonable. Lots of interesting ingredients. She especially liked the ceviche done with Hawaiian kampachi, yellow beets, rhubarb, and hibiscus leaves. Short rib on the nachos is a must buy for groups, Great atmosphere, the restaurant has a nice classy but interesting style. Our waiter put up with all our super annoying questions about the food. All in all it was great. Spent $85 after tip for two people but we went a little over the top for her birthday. Oh, almost forgot, the mushrooms in the mushroom tacos might be the best mushrooms I ever tasted in my life.

Great food, great service!
All in all - a great, food focused neighborhood gem. Staff is friendly, food is delicious, prices are reasonable.

Delicious food and friendly service. One of our favorites!

Great Mexican food!
I love this place. The food is great and affordable. I recommend the sweet plantain and fish tacos.

Had a Super Time!
Met some out-town family for a fun meal. Food was delicious and Jeff, our waiter, was very helpful, well-informed and knew everything quite well on both the food and drink menu. We especially loved the pepper marguerites! It couldn't have been better, both food and drink-wise. Will be returning again and again!

First time and would go back
Wanted to try something in the Fairmount area and was craving Mexican. Service was excellent and was assured that 90% of the menu was naturally gluten free. Server also said that the other 10% could be modified to meet my needs. We had excellent guacamole and salsa as an appetizer and the mushroom tacos as an entree. Both were very good! Also really enjoyed the beans and rice. Can't wait to go back and try more food.

When I walked into La Calaca Feliz I expected your normal row home restaurant with Mexican food, but boy was I surprised! The way it winds back and opens up is so fun! From the bright mural to the niche with the candles, La Calaca Feliz captures the spirit of Mexico! The food was great too! I would have preferred a little more spice to the salsa and the guacamole, but I have to say that the flavors made up for the lack of spice. The chorizo (house made) was hands down the best chorizo I've ever had (and I consider myself a sausage expert). It was smoky, sweet, spicy, savory, and just plain amazing. And the Elote loco - yum! I could have had a dozen! (grilled corn with lime mayo, queso fresco, and chile pequin).

A gem in the Art Museum area.
This was my first time at La Calaca Feliz, and we really enjoyed it. Professional waitstaff, excellent food. A great gem in the Art Museum area.
Eat out back on the patio.

food is always good
I always enjoy eating here. Tried something new this time, the crab fondue...delicious!

Fun Mexican restaurant in
Fun Mexican restaurant in vibrant neighborhood. Great guacamole, delicious seviche. Tacos tasty. Not huge, but excellent draft beer selection; great mixed drink and marguerita options. Outside garden option. Beautiful mural painted on inside dining walls. Very goid service. Only negative noise level makes conversation a bit tough at peak dining time. Will be back.
6/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
La Calaca Feliz serves up tasty, modern Mexican in sophisticated casual environment. The tasting menu is an especially good choice and value, providing tastes of most of the best menu items at a reasonable fixed price. The food is excellent, though perhaps not quite up to the quality of El Vez and Las Bugambilias. Better than Xochitle and El Rey and definitely a welcome addition on Fair, not, which previously lacked any decent Mexican inspired cuisine. The outdoor patio (which thankfully is in back and not on the street like many Philly restaurants) is lovely - tastefully decorated and well integrated with the main dining room. Noise can be a problem here, but that is true of many smaller Philly spots. Service is decent.

Wonderful food, a terrific
Wonderful food, a terrific marriage of creative and traditional, great service. The carnitas tacos and the mushroom tacos are our favorites. Out of this world. Also the tlayudas.

High quality food. Good sized
High quality food. Good sized portions. Have the three chile margarita if you like spicy drinks. Noisy but highly recommend

8:45 reservation and seated right on time. Ahi tuna ceviche with ginger ice was a cool, refreshing way to start the meal. Watermelon gazpacho was kindly split into two portions for sharing and was delicious. Seafood enchiladas were tasty and wild mushroom tacos were outstanding, also side of sweet plaintains, corn on the cob with lime mayo and queso did not disappoint.

Love this place
Myself and my husbands favorite restaurant :) Love the carnitas tacos and the sangria is just amazing :)

Best of Philly
In my opinion, the best Mexican in the city (and I've been to them all; Tequilas, Dos Segundos, El Camino, Cantina, El Rey, etc)
Food: perfectly balanced, satisfying but not too heavy. Great flavor and expertly prepared.
Cocktails: inventive and spot on, light and refreshing, perfect for a hot summer night. I had the chili margarita, which I throughly enjoyed.
Service: Friendly and welcoming. From the hostess to the cooks, bussers to the servers, everyone we met was pleasant and polite, especially for a busy Saturday night.
+Vegetarian friendly establishment, our server was very helpful and accommodating.
+Great quiet outdoor seating in the back (when it's not too hot)
+Beautiful decor and interior architecture.

We come here often and are never disappointed. The food and service are always great!
7/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Have been here many times and each time is simply great. The food is amazingly good and very reasonably priced. The service is first-rate and very friendly.

Very very good experience
Two of us went on a Saturday night with an open table booking. We were seated inside but it was extremely noisy. We asked to move outside. There was only a four seater but they very graciously accommodated us. The service from Meghan was super helpful and friendly. All the food was thoroughly enjoyable -esp shrimp main (could have been a bit warmer). I was a bit suspicious of all the high ratings on Yelp but here I am giving it 4 stars too. We really enjoyed it. Service was very very good.

Decided on La Calaca Feliz at the last minute to avoid a long walk to dinner in the rain - what a terrific suprise. From the outside we thought we were ducking into a small bar, only to find a bright beautiful dining area with great ambience. Starting with a fantasitc ahi tuna ceviche, we moved to the shark tacos with a few margaritas in between, and ended with an after dinner drink that was the perfect night cap. Our server, Isis, was excellent and we will certainly head back.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Bang for your buck
La Calaca Feliz offers outside dining in a high walled courtyard, a distinction few restaurants in Philly offer. Very generous portions of guac, we shared the flanked steak which was served to a perfect medium rare, and the chicken mole. Can't do wrong with Dos Equis drafts for $2.50 a piece. We will be back!
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Been coming here for a couple years and always impressed with the food, service, and drinks. Love this place!!
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
delicious Mexican with a wist
Fun atmosphere and back opens up into a surprisingly lovely space. Cocktails are unique and creative with a long list of tequilas. Food was sensational. Fish tacos were fresh and crispy. Sides were amazing and perfect for sharing. We even got parking on the street! Can't wait to return.
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Gluten free dining is fun again!
I've tried most things on the menu and they're all delicious. However, I recently tried the Tlayuda (think Mexican pizza) after learning that it was gluten free... and it was amazing! The spice profile of the short rib and the chorizo was just perfect. The Tlayuda and the guacamole were the perfect way to start what turned out to be a memorable dinner.
9/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
I always love it here! The servers are really nice and the food is delicious. It is also reasonably priced for the quality you get. 5 stars! The only critique I could give is the dessert menu is lacking a bit, but I usually stuff myself before that point anyway!

An exceptional revisit...
With the recent arrival of their new executive chef brings more fresh tasting, vibrant flavors in creative cuisine at La Calaca Feliz.
We enjoyed the Ceviche Amarillo (ahi tuna with yellow tomato aguachile and pineapple ginger ice) and jicama salad with avocado, cucumber, grapefruit and pumpkin seeds) followed by Chicken Mole and Grilled Shrimp and Grits with sweet corn, mustard greens and spicy black beans. A previous lack-luster tasting menu experience from the former chef has been supplanted by this very positive dining experience !! Kudos to the new chef !

Always a great meal!
I have loved this restaurant since they opened. They have great food at reasonable prices. An octopus tostada appetizer was just added to menu that is a must order.
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Some of the best Mexican I have ever had! Really fast service also. Carnitas were amazing.
9/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, average service
I usually love everything about a visit to La Calaca Feliz. The food and drinks are great (hamachi, crab fundido, and mushroom tacos are my favorite), cool dining room/patio, and friendly, attentive service. This time was a little strange - the restaurant wasn't busy, but we waited 20mins for a server to come to our table, and only got one after asking the busser if he could send one over. Hopefully they're back to their usual form for my next visit.
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Quaint with a Kick
Without a doubt the best happy hour spot you could find in the Fairmount/ Art Museum area.

I have dined at this restaurant many times. Everyone we introduce to this restaurant enjoys their meal. Great margaritas, creative and delicious food. Great for vegetarians and meat lovers as well.

A go to whenever anyone visits!
Whenever anyone visits we take them to la calaca feliz because their food is amazing!!! I love the crab fondeto and the guacamole!!!

Another Great Meal
La Calaca Feliz has quickly become my favorite restaurant in Fairmount. Pressed for dinner options on a Saturday night, we grabbed a last minute table and as always, were blown away by the food. Simple, bright, fresh options round out the menu and the ambiance is fun yet intimate (thankfully the obnoxiously loud group sitting next to us left shortly after we arrived). There was a bit of a mix up of who our server was, but the staff was attentive and apologetic in correcting the issue which is a true sign of great service. This place gets top marks, Great Drinks + Great Food + Consistency = a neighborhood gem

Pleasant dinner, good food, fun
My friend and I have a lovely light dinner with a glass of wine. The food was tasty, interesting, and healthy. There are a lot of gluten-free items, and the server was very thoughtful about this. The ceviche appetizer and the brussel sprouts were especially delicious.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious every time!
After repeated visits to LCF, I must say this restaurant is consistently amazing. The architecture is gorgeous and the restaurant shines.
The cocktails are great. My favorite is the Cumberland Blues - a tequila infused cucumber-mint-lemonade concoction that is dangerously delicious.
Their guacamole and chips are presented beautifully and matched in flavor. So good!
My go-to entree is the Baja Tilapia Tacos. They are fabulous: plantain crusted tilapia with cabbage slaw, radishes, and avocado with lime. AWESOME. Pretty plate and the flavor is outta sight.
I crave their food now. I am becoming a regular, much to my delight. Try it!
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Shared the hamachi ceviche and pulpo tostada for starters and highy recommend both. Finished with the carnitas taco alongside refried beans. A wonderful meal and I look forward to going back soon.

Glad we Found La Calaca!
Great little Mexican restaurant with a nice vibe, great food & wait staff. Servers seemed to help e/o out and enjoy working there. Clean place with a beautiful outdoor patio that was full so we couldn't enjoy it. Definitely will return! Oh, and the Garcia margarita is awesome!
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
La Calaca Feliz is a wonderful restaurant! From the murals on the walls, to the food, to the vibrant ambiance, La Calaca Feliz is truly a hidden gem. It looks deceptively small from the outside, but once you step in, you will enter into a realm that you were not expecting. The food and service was great! The noise level was the only slight downside, as I had to sometimes try to speak over the noise. However, it is not a major deterrent. I certainly recommend this place to anyone seeking a Mexican restaurant in the Fairmount area.

Give your taste buds a jolt
Tortilla soup one of the best in town. Menu is not expansive but still manages to cover the gambit for folks who want to try something different as well as those who are going to order a standard like enchiladas. BUT they'll find the enchiladas are special, too (and delicious).
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
Food was good. Some things
Food was good. Some things were great and one was just ok. Pork Belly appetizer was outstanding. Great combination of flavors. Barbecued grilled pork tacos were mediocre. Chicken enchillados were good. An issue with service, very slow to get drinks and even much slower to get the appetizer. Management addressed it by removing the appetizer from the bill. We noticed that tables which did the tasting menu received much better service. That is not right. If service is going to be that slow to tables ordering off the menu, complimentary chips and salsa would ease the irritation. It is one of the few Mexican restaurants that does not offer complimentary chips and salsa. Seems a bit stingy.

My go to spot.
Great margaritas and great food. You can't ask for a better place to get both.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Sunday low-key foodie
This was a last minute reservation for 6, that was a breeze and we had delicious food and drinks (apple cinnamon in a margarita totally works), all in a colorful dining room with murals and high ceilings. Would love to come back and see what their brunch is like.

Great first experience
We've walked past this neighborhood restaurant many times because it's always been busy and we didn't want to wait long. But the crowds are justified. After our first visit, early in mid-week, we understand the long lines and we're sure to be back. The waitress was exceptionally helpful with the menu and caring follow-up. We took her recommendations into consideration and had a wonderful appetizer and two satisfying entrees, appropriately moderate in size, but marvelously spiced and flavored. Truly a winner!

Good spot by the museums
My friend & I have been there a few times, food is always fresh & full of flavor.

This was my second time dining at La Calaca Feliz and both times were great! Inexpensive, yet the quality of food is high. Great for a group for a fun night out. Excellent service too.
