Great South loop spot
Great food, great service, great drinks, great ambiance. I love that the chef is accomadating to the customers needs and willing to change the menu to suit your taste. That is how it should be!! LOVE it!!

The new menu is inviting, interesting and well executed. The prosciutto with melon offers a generous portion of prosciutto, perfectly ripe melon paired with well-seasoned arugla; it is light and well-executed. The grilled salmon was done perfectly...as was the special sea bass. The poached pear is a lovely addition to the dessert menu. Gioco's rebirth as a delightful South Loop neighborhood dining destination is well on its way to becoming true.

This is a great restaurant.
This is a great restaurant. The interior provides a very intimate setting with an open kitchen. It is divided into two rooms, with (original?) brick supports between the two. On one side is the bar (with red lights illuminating the wall) and on the other side is the intimate dining room and the open kitchen. The food was delicious. I had the spinach tortelloni, and the flavor was so fresh. The sauce was creamy, but very light so that the spinach flavor came right through. I also had the lentil soup and the tiramisu, both which I would recommend. The service was also great. The wait staff were well informed and answered our questions amiably! They were also fantastic about filling drinks, removing plates, and anticipating our needs.

As an out of towner, I wanted
As an out of towner, I wanted a "real" Italian meal with an authentic not "cheesy" atmosphere. Gioco hit just the right note. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was warm and comforting. My only down note was that the pasta was from a box, not hand made.

The burrata appetizer was divine, as well as the agnolotti special. The steaks were cooked to perfection and served hot. We were there on a busy Saturday night and received great service. We will definitely return on our next trip to Chicago.

Outstanding Italian - South Loop
Our dinner was wonderful. We shared two appetizers - the grilled calamari and the prosciutto and melon. Both were delicious. Two of us had the fish special, one had gnocchi, and the fourth person had a chicken special. Everyone raved about their dinner.

Alway great! A true sign of a good Italian resturaunt is if they have good red sauce. Everything from their apps to entrees do not disappoint. The wood burning oven gives the food a nice smokey - homemade taste, love that! The baby squid, branzino, portabelo mushroom, and huge steak for two were stand outs.
The chief often comes out and talks to guest, he's not only does he cook good food but is also pretty funny.

Very good experience! Everything was perfect. Would definitely recommend to friends and family. Can't wait to visit again.

Consistently very good
While the menu is somewhat limited, it IS augmented by a number of specials daily. Everything is well executed. Service is friendly, attentive and helpful and your server will not shy away from making recommendations when asked. The open kitchen area near the wood burning stove makes a nice diversion. Pasta tastes and textures are great, especially the linguini bolognese and the tortelloni. Multiple courses will set you back a few $ but if you have a pal or two to share with, you won't be disappointed ordering from each section of the menu. There's a reason Gioco is still around and that's because it knows what it wants to do and does it well.

Coming back strong
We hadn't been to Gioco in a while. Troubles with previous owners, liquor licenses and sloppy service kept us away. But Gioco is back and if it isn't "better than ever" it's still good enough to rejoin our neighborhood restaurant rotation. Welcome back!

Food is delicious however, when I order an appetizer I expect more than 1 crab cake for $19! Special should be priced as they are upwards $40 plus, plus portions seem small. Ambiance is nice and the bartender Tim was delightful. I would consider going back
But it is pricey.

Amazing spot in South Loop
The service was impeccable and the food was divine.

Nice dinner. Fair service
Good food. One waiter covering 12 tables is not a good way to run the business. Good way for waiter to make money but I HATE waiting - like we did for almost 10 minutes to even order and another 10 minutes to have our check processed. Note to owner - hire more help for busy nights. Makes no sense to leve customers depending on short staff

Fun Italian Food
Nice place, good menu, the waiters literally run from table to table. Best approximation of a tuscan steak I have seeen outside Tuscany. That said - they really feature seafood. Good Portions. The chef came over and had fun with us in between orders. (The line is in one of the dining rooms)
Pizza looked great - real wood fired oven. Wines by the glass could be a little better selection. If I lived in Chicago, I would definetly return - and I generally don't eat italian - Very reasonable prices.

favorite neighborhood restaurant
this is our go to restaurant in the South Loop - we have a condo nearby so we walk over. The food is always great - I have noticed lately tho that the portion size has gone down considerably!! The time before we ordered the special - swordfish - it was awesome but the portion size was very small and it was very expensive so i was disappointed!! They need to reconsider how much food they are sending out to the customer now!!! B

Good South Loop Italian
Lost a bit of it's luster over the years but for south loop, a solid choice for italian food. There are certainly better places in Chicago but worth a stop if looking for a spot in the neighborhood.

Always Hits The Spot
Great home made Italian food with an urban modern flare.
6/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Every time we dine here we are impressed with the quality of food, service and ambience, and the small but excellent wine list, with mostly Italian choices, completes the experience. The chef is actively involved in making sure our experience is top notch, checking every plate, talking with the guests, and even making wine and food suggestions if requested. Very good and consistent restaurant.
6/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food here was absolutely delicious, really tasty, fresh and the portions were not too big so we were able to enjoy appetizers and main course, and my friend also had dessert. The wine was tasty too. An added bonus was watching the chefs work.
The one negative thing was that the service was too fast. I don't think it was intentional, but it did put us under some pressure when our plates were whipped away as soon as we had finished the last bite (still chewing!), even though there were still free tables.
I was a bit disappointed that their coffee machine was out of order too, hopefully it will be fixed by the time this is posted!
I would definitely go back here the next time I am in Chicago.

Great Italian restaurant
Wonderfull food but not inexpensive. Park in lot 1 block south for $6.

The staff was very accommodating , service and food were excellent. Chef came out to apologize for running out of sea bass.( was at 9:00 Pm so very understandable ) Highly recommend to all.

A nice restaurant but...
We eat out often in many different cities. For what we got for $400.00 for 4 people, I thought the prices were expensive. The restaurant is nice, but for the price, the service should have been exquisite, and the ambiance just a touch above what it was.
Frustrating, the Chef kept rushing past our table to look through the french doors, to see if his friends had arrived; without saying HI, or asking about our meal. When his friends did arrive (after 4-5 times after he rushed past our table), he opened the door behind us, and lets in hot humid Chicago air: once again without saying "excuse me," or even asking if it would bother us, if he opened the door that was 1 foot behind us. We felt like second class citizens.

Lovely italian restaurant
Have been coming here for years. Food is wonderful and they--staff, chef--make you feel at home.

The meal started with prosciutto wrapped figs. Delicious combination of salty and sweet. I had sea bass and my husband had ravioli both of us were extremely pleased .
Wait staff very attentive but not bothersome. Couple drinks, appetizer with meal for 2 cost about $100.
Well worth it and fantastic night

Excellent, authentic, simple yet elegant Italian food. Service was friendly, knowledgeable and well timed. Food was great! Excellent find in the South Loop and we'll be back.

Traditional italian at its best
This place was quiet on a Sunday. Great setting. Service was appropriate. Gave you time, attentive but not constantly bugging you. Dropped my fork though and they were instantly there to pick up and replace. They were so flexible making things off menu. Asked for gnocchi in truffle cream sauce and it was perfect. Great filet. Asparagus awesome. Burrata heirloom tomatoes, deserts all wonderful.

While in Chicago, we found this place by accident. The chef came out and sent appetizers to our table - we let him choose and all were amazing. Our kids (teens) said this was one of the best places they had ever eaten. Highly recommend this.

Treated like kings
We are occasional patrons of Gioco, and were greeted and treated like visiting celebrities when we dined with another couple recently. The owner/chef made it a point to stop by our table several times to advise on wine and menu selections, and also made sure that we had some special treats such as after-dinner vin santo and chocolate truffles. As always, the menu offered a tempting array of seasonal foods and we enjoyed excellent swordfish, sea bass, pasta with vongole, and veal chop.

We always love coming in and having Chef direct our dining experience. He never disappoints and Friday night we had many specials and they were all exceptionally good. I wish I could afford to eat here routinely - but the value is excellent, if a bit pricey. It is among the best restaurants I have ejnoyed in Chicago this year - and I eat out between 6-8 times a month.

McCormick biz lunch alternative
This is a great spot for a business lunch alternative to staying at McCormick center. Its a short cab ride, the food is amazing, service great and noise level low enough for business conversation.

The food is NEVER disappointing and the service is exceptional.

The food was very good and
The food was very good and the service was incredible. However, we were disappointed that when we asked the waiter if the meatball appetizer was large enough to be shared, he said that there were only two meatballs, and it wouldn't be enough. There were only three of us, and the meatballs were HUGE - we could've easily shared them. We ordered 2 meatball appetizers and another appetizer, again, thinking that the meatballs wouldn't be sufficient. This of course made the whole meal, which was expensive to begin with, even more expensive than necessary. Everything was delicious!

We have been to Gioco before bit it had been a while . It remains
one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Chicago with
excellent authentic Italian food and a lovely , vibrant atmosphere
And a good win and beer list without exorbitant prices.

CHEF WITH A PERSONALITY
It's always nice when the chef comes out to every table, knows his stuff, and can charm your guests.
This makes all the difference in the world!

Great place in the South Loop
Walking into Gioco is such a pleasure... The aroma of the open fire cooking in the kitchens is so pleasing and yummy. We were greeted at the door by the Chef and the hostess. The Chef a very friendly man. We sat down and were promptly waited on by the server who was very nice. We orders wine and an appetizer which was delicious. Two of members of our party ordered the oxtail entree and I had the spinach tortellini. The dishes were wonderful and nice portions for men. Myhusband orders this dish almost every time... he loves it! A great restaurant! The of Gioco is also very interesting.
