I feel Michael's is a midtown
I feel Michael's is a midtown neighborhood secret. The staff are very accommodating and the menu is very well-priced. The decor was a bit alarming at first, but then I soon realized it was because it wasn't uber trendy and overly branded like many of the restaurants in NYC. The building is older so the restaurant feels dated when you walk in, but don't let that fool you. The staff is very personable and the menu has a little something for everyone. We told them it was my sister's birthday, and they even gave her a small bouquet of flowers to take home. I'm sure if I lived in the area, this would be a regular place for me and my family. Loved their Korean tacos and the mango cheesecake!

Such a terrific place. Yes, it is expensive, but Michael himself comes around to shake your hand and ensure you are happy. Walk me through what other restaurants do that in the city.

On purpose, knowing it would
On purpose, knowing it would be calm and quiet, we booked for 8pm on Saturday night. Michael's is known for its weekday lunch scene, of course, but our experience on the weekend could not have been better: every staff person was attentive and gracious, but not overbearing. We were not rushed, even though we were the last to leave, and our meals and wine were superb. I'd never been to Michael's in New York for dinner...what a find!

Wine Director Kasi Shelton
Wine Director Kasi Shelton was very knowledgable, friendly and helpful. She made the overall experience delightful. Food was very good and the ambiance was comfortable, not too "claustrophobic" (like many of the NYC restaurants). We would go back just for the Portuguese wines and the Korean Tacos.

The food was very good, the service was great and although it was our first time there the management including Michael McCarty but especially the hostess or manager made us feel like we were old regulars. My office is on that block and I will certainly be going back.

A great place to lunch in midtown.
Michael's is super convenient to the Museum of Modern Art and shopping. The restaurant is filled with wonderful art by Jasper Johns and Frank Stella and the garden room abounds with flowering tree branches in all four corners. Waitstaff is efficient and friendly and you can linger or eat quickly and return to work or fun. Menu highlights fresh ingredients and the portions are normal, not oversized. A room filled with dealmakers and conversation seemed remarkably quiet and you can easily communicate without shouting. A super choice for a business lunch or comfortable visit with an old friend, Michael (the owner) will visit your table and chat and he is want to do. Highly recommend. Lunch for two was $50 with tip but no dessert or liquor.

Really happy to have finally tried Michael's. It's a great location for an early dinner before Carnegie Hall. The salad nicoise was disappointing, but all raved about the pizza.

Outstanding food, excellent service
The restaurant was very comfortable, even with a table for four in the center of the action we were not bothered by the full house. The timing couldn't have been better with courses being served at precisely the moment anticipated and the menu offers a broad and easily suitable variety without being difficult to read and follow.

Power lunch spot
Booked this place for lunch before an afternoon matinee because it was close to the theater. Big mistake. This place does not cater to the theater crowd and despite several requests to the server to move things along because we had to make a show, things still moved slowly. Looking around I could see why. It was full of power lunches and business meetings. To the right was a party of 12, with a group of Brits in for a meeting. To the left was a formally dressed VC guy meeting with an internet entrepreneur in orange sneakers.
But hey, business people gotta eat somewhere and apparently it's here. So my bad, I just picked the wrong place. There are plenty of other places in midtown that have the drill down for pre-theater lunch.

lovely restaurant. Had been before but there's more of a vibe during lunch. very quiet evening. But the food was very good.
Not sure if they shouldn't have offered 1000 pts. for dining there with Open Table. Might have had a whole lot more diners. A lot of us look for those extra points!

Great breakfast spot
Would be better if they could open at 7 am rather than 7:30, but still excellent.
6/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nice place all the time!
We like Michael's because is quiet, because the food is always reliable, very nice service, great for lunch and you can always get a dinner reservation

Local NY Feel
Felt like a local NY restaurant hidden between all the touristy place. The food was great and staff very friendly. We were really late for our reservation but they accomodated us. This a great place if your looking to go somewhere with your family. Both the kids and grandma kind sit comfortable and find something appealing on the menu.

A favorite in midtown....
Consistently excellent for lunch, albeit pricey. Do they really need to charge $3 per roll ?
7/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best place for power breakfast
This restaurant understand service, kindness, good atmosphere, people who are looking for great atmosphere and great food this is the place!!! Always I am welcome in style, and managers remember everyone and they make you feel home.

A great breakfast spot
I have used Michael's for years and it never fails to hit the mark. The food is always good, service is good, and the room is one of the best for a good working breakfast in all of New York. My only request would be to update the menu more frequently, particularly in summer when fruits and vegetables are at their peak. Over, though, always a satisfying experience.

the midtown regency for Breakfast
The service is outstanding-the crowd interesting. The only negative is that it is a little nosiey

One of the best
Michael's remains one of the finest dining experiences on NYC. General Manager Steve Millington Sets the service standard for the entire staff who all provide excellent service. Food and drinks are presented quickly but you never feel rushed, and the food is better than any restaurant I've been to in NY. Highly recommended if you don't mind the bill.

Well, we finally made our way to Michaels. For us, it wasn't easy as we DO NOT both work in midtown and it's closed on Saturdays and Sundays. But, it was worth the effort to fight Friday traffic, meet my husband in bustling midtown, and enjoy a quiet, cozy, and delicious dinner there Friday, July 27. It was wonderful! Staff was so great, super attentive and very friendly! It was casual and comfortable, a refreshing change from the usual local fare. Very pleased with whole experience! I would certainly make an effort to fight the midtown rush and enjoy Michaels again!

Michael's is the lunch for the ages
Great place for a business lunch especially the media crowd. Also the food is great. I love their gazpacho, Scallops were juicy and tasty.

Michael's is a Gem
I booked a reservation at Michael's about 2 weeks before we were going to NYC because you never know with NYC restaurants and we did not want to be waiting around. We were sat right away. The food was a 10! We had the spicy korean chicken wings, Risotto, Duck, crab cakes - everything was amazing. Michael himself came around and said hello and I'm assuming his assistant manager - she was spectacular. All smiles and lovely. The guy that kept our water glasses full was wonderfully helpfully, kind and provided extraordinary service. Our only complaint was our actual waitress. The restaurant is not huge - maybe 30 tables total and she rarely stopped by. AND when we wanted to order more food she actually SIGHED! Couldn't believe it.
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
My friend and I met for a delicious lunch. Food superb. Michael McCarty came and greeted us personally at our table. It was a wonderful experience. A perfect lunch. This restaurant remains consistent over the years. Also his original spot in Santa Monica is also still as good of not better, w/the overhead heaters! I would recommend it highly!

Michael's is like an oasis in the middle of midtown madness! Quiet, sophisticated, decorated with original art pieces and serving really good food.

A Special Place
A beautiful space, wonderful art, an incredible wine list (the sommelier was very helpful), and the food is truly delicious. We will definitely go back here again.

Always a great experience
I love to come to Michael's for lunch with clients. It is quiet, formal without being stuffy and very well located. The food is wonderful and creative.
When Michael himself comes to your table to be sure you are happy, it's a classic touch.
I always arrive early and appreciate the comfortable sitting area.

Best staff on earth
I had a very important meeting with a 5-star client. Due to her schedule, we had to book a late lunch starting at 2pm. We ran WAY over - I noticed most of the other patrons filing out by 3pm. The wait staff was also looking to take a break before the dinner shift. By 4:30 when we left, we were the last diners in the restaurant by a long shot. Yet no one interrupted us, not once. No one made us feel uncomfortable, no one asked us to pay the check or to get moving. While I did feel uncomfortable putting the staff out, they never made us feel uncomfortable or unwanted. It was the most pleasant dining experience I have ever had. Kudos to the management and staff for accommodating us, and making us feel like 5-star patrons.

When looking for a restaurant near City Center - the website for MIchael's truly reflected the ambience. The staff was friendly and attentive; the food delicious. Varied menu at prices that are reasonable.

Good food but noisy. Good place for "women who lunch" but not for me.

We have had lunch at Michael's
We have had lunch at Michael's several times and it never disappoints! We sampled the risotto and ravioli and both were wonderful. Our server suggested a light wine to go with lunch and it was the perfect choice. Michael was in the restaurant that day and made a point to speak to each table, a nice touch. We will be back!

The food was very good but a little pricey for what you received for your meal. $28 for a chicken Cobb Salad!
Staff was very nice and helped with our selections.

Share plates are the way to go at this Midtown power house. Share share and share more. The food, service and ambience make this for a special place to dine. I would suggest group dining and try all the small plates.

Impressive midtown gem. This was my first time dining at Michael's, and was so impressed with the attentive service and attention to detail. Wonderful and fresh farm to table food. Not inexpensive, but worth it due to the quality and freshness of the food.

Charming atmosphere and nice owners
Came here for a nice dinner. Owners came out to greet us on Saturday night. Place has a nice charm to it for the older crowd. At first when we first entered, we thought we were underdressed as this establishment seemed to be formal dress only. However, we were assured it was not. They have wide variety of wine and service was attentive. We ordered the duck confit sliders which was good. We ordered eggplant ravioli which was a bit spicy from they pepper they put into it. I also ordered the seabass on bokchoy which wasn't bad. I just got a feeling that the restaurant was having a conflicting image being presented. Italian yet Asian, classy yet humble. It's an interesting restaurant.

Trying to organize a lunch with one friend flying in from Cape Town and another from San Francisco was a challenge; the San Fran
fellow was very late but the staff was truly patient and courteous as I stalled ordering lunch. Finally, the three of us were ready to eat. The food was terrific; the wine is always terrrific and the ambience friendly. We had a wonderful two-hour lunch. Perfect.

Movers and Shakers
This restaurant is spoken about often on NYSD, it is definitely a place for movers and shakers, NY society. We have met Mr. McCarty a few times, he has always made us feel welcomed. The food is pretty good. The decor is from the early 1990s (hunter green chair seats) but I like it. You never know who you will run into on any given day.

Great Food, large glass of wine and terrific service.

Why am I writing this?
Excellent. Long on 55th Street, fine food, ambience and service, great bar and lovely wines by the glass, and yet seems rather quiet in the evenings. Good value for people who know what midtown restaurants cost nowadays. But why am I writing this? If word gets around, we'll have to reserve weeks in advance and they'll jack up the prices.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Where was the wait staff?
4 of us love the room and the artwork is amazing - powerful, yet not overwhelming nor intrusive. The lighting and large scale seasonal branch arrangements were the perfect balance for the most inviting ambiance.
two of our guests were vegetarians and easily found excellent choices while the sea bass special was nothing short of superb, all beautifully presented.
Service at the beginning of the meal was well timed and graceful. However, after the entry the wait staff was nowhere to be found for desert, coffee and check. That was an annoying component to an otherwise perfect dinner.
