This is an expensive restaurant,
This is an expensive restaurant, considering that the food is fairly straightforward Austrian cuisine. Having said that, you won't get better sausages or schnitzel in Los Angeles. We had the pork schnitzel, which was excellent, and the weisswurst, served in milk and onions. Don't say "yuck" until you try it: the sausages were as delicate and delicious as great weisswurst should be, and the preparation was perfectly suited to these exceptional sausages. The potato salad was delicious and is unlike any American potato salad. Don't miss the sparkling water, which is from New Zealand and is the world's best-tasting, purest water.

What a find! If you like
What a find! If you like this kind of food, the sausages were all very good, sauerkraut sweet and crunchy, and the schnitzel was perfect. A bit noisy at lunch, a little spare with the seating and decor, but I will definitely go back.

a party of 3 adults and two little children were very noisy at 645p. I dont think the place is suitable for children due to the small space of the restaurant. The food was very good but the service could be better with less 'attitude'

I just LOVE everything that
I just LOVE everything that Chef Mairinger prepares at Bierbeisl. The flavors are balanced and revealing. The Austrian wines pair beautifully with the food. Of course, one can't beat weiner and beer pairings either. Yay for horseradish and home-cured char. Now for some weisser Spargel!

Good new place to eat
It was my second time to have a meal at Bier Beisl and just like the first time, we enjoyed the dining experience - the fresh food and friendly service, will be coming back.
4/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
An authentic slice of Munich and Vienna here in L.A. The weisswurst was just like I remembered getting in Munich- plump, crisp and delicate. The weiner schnitzel was light, delicate and very flavorful. I also had the Trio of Pork, which was thoroughly enjoyable as well. The weisse beer was authentic and clearly from Germany, and not some domestic craft version, which try as they might, can't seem to quite duplicate the characteristics of what makes weises beer weisse beer.
The wait staff were very friendly and made very good recommendations of beers for each course. Next visit, I think I'll try the risotto with sweet breads. I wonder what beer goes best with that?

This is a favorite of mine!!
This is a favorite of mine!! The food is fabulous and the staff are all very friendly. The owner/chef Bernhard is absolutely the most gracious and humble young man. He is very talented and hard working. He will be someone you will be haring about for years to come.

great food, great service, great drinks and most notably a great chef!

Reminded me of my grandmother's cooking, but with an elegant twist. Everything we tasted and shared was amazing. Chef Bernhard's food is worth traveling for (came from Agoura Hills).

Unusual, attractive restaurant
A small, unusual restaurant for Los Angeles...featuring authentic Austrian food, beer and wine...we enjoyed the schnitzels, sausages, draft beer and excellent service.

Something old and something new
Overall, this is a really great restaurant, well deserving of its accolades. There isn't much authentic Austrian food around, if any and here it's done with a deft hand. It's nice to try something new, even if some of it has close similarity to German food. Can't say I'd eat here often, but certainly highly recommended for a wonderful change of pace.

Special Austrian cuisine
The meal brought back fond memories of food eaten during wonderful trips and stays in Austria, in a crisp modern setting. True Salzburg Stiegl beer on tap, along with Liptauer cheese, another favorite. Overall, very happy with our meal. (Can't give a totally objective review, since I have such strong positive memories of trips to Austria, starting in 1968.)

Authentic Austrian Right here!
My husband was raised in Vienna. We visit there often, so we know about real Austrian food,. This is the real deal.
We had two different schnitzels. Each was thin, crisp and delicious. The potato salad was right out of a Viennese bier hall. Tghe selection of wursts was awesome and though we did not try any, our table companions found them fabulous.
While Sachertort is the best known Viennese Dessert, the Kaiserscharme with plum sauce was a "don't miss" A cross between bread pudding and a fluffy crepe.
The gruner veltlinger was a fresh fruity light summer wine.
The fladle soup which they call veal bouillon with herbed pancakes was good. The pancake strips were lovely. The consume needs to be a little stronger. We will go again....and often

I would return for the schnitzel, weisswurst, apple strudel, beers. Quality authentic Austrian!

Worth A Trip
Extraordinarily high quality and creative Austrian cuisine with a welcoming ambiance and fine hospitality make this one of the best restaurants in the Los Angeles.

Great food and great service
Fantastic authentic Austrian, great beer too. The chef has a great team and the attention to detail is making this a real good experience all the way to desserts.

We ordered the 5 course tasting menu for sausages and the schnitzel and apple struedel. All were delicious! It was fun to have a tasting of sausages. The restaurant is unique because it's Austrian food which is different than just another sausage restaurant. I've never been to Austria so I have no idea if it was authentic or not, but it was definitely fun to try some of the specialties of that cuisine. The service is also very good. We really enjoyed ourselves and have already recommended it to others.

What a find...
This place is a must do! The food was amazing and Bernard is charming and such an amazing proprietor. We tried a little of everything and have to say that it was truly fabulous.
We will go back over and over!

Excellent sausages, schnitzels
This was recommended by the manager at Ray's, because a former Ray's waiter now runs this place. It's very small and intimate, and the food is very interesting. The sausage sampler was really good, and you will definitely have leftovers! Order one platter for a group of four! The schnitzels are good, there are three kinds: veal, pork and turkey, each one in a different breading, and served with lemons and lingonberries. The turkey one was dry, but the other two were good. They have a good selection of Austrian wines/beer. The server was a charming German woman who took all kinds of time to answer questions and explain the menu. She even coached us on the German way to say, "We are satisfied" instead of my wrong statement, "We are joyous."

There has been a dearth of quality, authentic German/Austrian cuisine in LA for some time. Many have popped up lately but few, if any, are as faithful to the cuisine and culture as Bier Beisl. None of the German kitsch, just great quality, great tasting food and beer. If you're a real wine snob, though, you may be disappointed in the wine selection. All Austrian wines is great for the theme but, let's face it, they don't make the best wines. Some good but none great. They might want to consider sneaking in a California cab just for variety.

Better Than Authentic Austrian
I was tempted to begin the review by stating that the food served at Bier Beisl was authentic Austrian fare. However, having lived in Vienna for 6 months, my opinion is that the food at Bier Beisl is better. Fresher ingredients, more interesting preparation, perfectly poured beer - in a word, better. There are a lot of well-known restaurants on the west side of LA but when we have out of town guests, this is a go to place for us. The chicken liver mousse is insanely good. With bread and the cheese sampler that could be dinner for two. But that would mean missing their excellent sausages (get the assorted platter if you are new to this type of food) and their schnitzel which is more flavorful and less greasy than standard Viennese fare.

Brought back memories of home cooked meals - I was born in Vienna.

Nothing short of amazing... one of the best food experiences in a long time

A smallish, well decorated
A smallish, well decorated room, a waiter with a Rasta do, and a smiling Paul Bunyan in a starched chef's coat serving up delicious, authentic Austrian food. What's not to love about this place? Not a fake frau in a dirndl, not a middle-aged lump in lederhosen, not an oversized beer stein anywhere to be seen. BierBeisl is all about the food, not the kitsch. Lots and lots of mouthwatering wursts, sauerbraten, red cabbage, sauerkraut. An excellent small wine list with some true Austrian finds. Chef Berhard Mairinger has graced Los Angeles with a lovely Alpine present. Prosit!

Eating in Austria without the TSA
It is wonderful to be ale to enjoy The great Austian food without having to deal with the TSA and an eleven hour flight. Wonderful meal. Thank you.

The appetizer with different sausages was sublime, fresh sauerkraut and 2 specials mustards made the dish way above average. I'll even say excellent. Main courses were also tasty and authentic (this is an austrian restaurant). Overall super fun time. Great specialty beers!

Amazing food and service!
If you think Austrian food is heavy and uninteresting, think again. BierBeisel's food is not only creative and varied but absolutely delicious. Presentation is flawless and the flavors are amazing. Server was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Highly recommend.

That turkey schnitzel could be so moist and tasty? This restaurant keeps getting better and better.

Awesome Schnitzel Plus
As an overall eating experience, we just love this place. The Schnitzel is so good that I have cravings for it. The traditional Austrian sides and specials are out of this world. They have a nice Austrian wine and beer list, too. It's a small space so make sure to get a reservation.
9/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
We came here with a group of friends for my husband's birthday and literally everything we ate was delicious. Highlights included the sausage sampler, the schnitzel sampler, the red cabbage, and the sauerkraut. They do a very specific type of food, and they do it well. We all left full and very pleased. I was only surprised that given all the high accolades online, this place was not more crowded on Saturday night. We will definitely be back!

Best Kaiserschmarrn ever
It was my first time in this restaurant and I chose it because I am from Germany and had a craving
for Austrian food. Bier Beisl did not disappoint. The veal Wiener Schnitzel was excellent and so was the
potato salad and even though I am not big on desserts I agreed to share the Kaiserschmarrn with
my friend. I have never had such tasty and fluffy Kaiserschmarrn in my life, not even in Austria.
I was told they make them with vanilla and a little rum. To die for! I recommend Bier Beisl for everyone
who likes Austrian food (don't go if you watch your calorie intake) in a casual and cozy environment.
Both servers we had were super friendly and always made sure we were well taken care of.

Bier Biesl is AWESOME!
The food is wonderful, some traditional German dishes with a fun twist. The schnitzel sampler is great, with three types of meat that have different schnitzel coatings. He did an unusual breading with pumpkin seeds, tasted great and perfect for the month of October. The schnitzel is not greasy at all. His warm German potato salad is excellent, as is the red cabbage. Sacher torte was perfect, not dry at all. The kaiserschmarm is just unbelievably delicious - warm pancakes with blueberries. They have an excellent beer selection. It is tough to find Stiegl Radler (with grapefruit) on tap, and the also have the Stiegl organic un-filtered beer as well. Everyone is friendly, even when we had two small children with us on a Saturday night!
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Simply the best restaurant in L.A. The composed nature of the dishes and the care the chef takes to balance the meal is unbelievable. Hands down the best charcuterie plate you will ever find, and the sausages are amazing, with the cheese sausage the best sausage you can find.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
So sorry to hear that Bier Beisl is closing its Beverly Hills location. It was a family favorite for the sausages (perfectly prepared), schnitzel (light and delicious), and beer (speaks for itself!). We will eagerly await the reopening on the West side.
