If you want it to be perfect...
We were celebrating a special moment in our relationship and having been to many different local restaurants, I wanted to convey how important this wonderful news meant to me, so Gardens of Avila was the only choice. The drive, the seclusion, the ambiance, the service, the food, was the exact impression I wanted my partner to experience. We had a wonderful time and our waitress happily educated us in gourmet terminology and made recommendations which proved perfect for our occasion. If you want to impress your date, don't go anywhere else.

Easter Brunch Experience 2013
The restaurant is surrounded in a beautiful garden setting which feeds the visual appetite before setting foot inside. Our waitress, Emily, was great. She had energy and a passion for the food. She made each Easter brunch dish sound sooo good... it was difficult to decide. Food was delicious and properly portioned.

A mixed bag
Excellent service, excellent quality food ingredients, but uneven cooking quality. The chicken dish was too salty, overcooked and dry, and the sausage beneath is was unappetizingly dry, hard, and crumbly. The sirloin cap was very good, though some contained gristle; it seemed overpriced. Portion size for appetizers was very small, so subtle flavors were not enjoyed. The dessert menu has consistently been too narrow, so those with dairy allergies are left disappointed. Fresh fruit was graciously offered as an alternative, but this is a special restaurant...something special for dessert is expected. For another meal, in the bar, the burger was overcooked...no fries to be had, disappointing housemade soggy chips instead.

WOW! This was by far the best meal I have had in this area. The chef makes amazing dishes that are innovative, extremely tasty and fresh from farm to table and with great presentation.
We had incredible service and the food truly was extraordinary. The crab ravioli appetizer and the beet and burrata salad are to die for. And don't miss out on the duck, sirloin and chicken entrees. Our party of 4 could have been the Cheshire Cats with grins from ear to ear. And don't miss out on the deeeeeeeeeelicious tangerine cheesecake...the presentation was over the top.
This is truly a foodie's delight.

Fabulous friendly attentive service! Three of us had the halibut and it was dry. The tangerine dessert was outstanding. We love being able to bring a bottle of local wine without a corkage fee!

Great ambiance. Great place
Great ambiance. Great place for that special night with your partner or a date. Very quaint and subdued environment. The staff is very attentive, pleasant and very knowledgeable about the menu. I will definitely visit The Gardens in the near future.

Pretty, almost provincial-French-feeling dining room. Excellent chef, great commitment to local and organic foods.
Local wines featured, alas pretty young.
I wouldn't bet the farm he'll stick around too long.

Chef has got the magic touch
The new chef has got the magic touch with food. I had the "Garden Party' sampler dinner. It was a good choice- one delicious course after another. I didn't know a humble carrot could taste so amazing! You have got to try this place.

The food was outstanding and beautifully presented.

The food here is truly inspired. The restaurant grows much of its produce in its own garden. Everything is fresh and meticulously prepared and served. The textures and flavors are thoughtful and DELICIOUS. It expresses a consistent aesthetic. I felt the decor could benefit from some additional art on the walls and perhaps a huge seasonal bouquet.

My husband and I just celebrated our third year anniversary with a stay at Sycamore Mineral Springs. We wouldn't dream of missing a chance for a meal at the Gardens of Avila restaurant. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. The food is amazing! We always opt for the chef's tasting menu with the wine pairing. Each course is an experience for your senses. Breakfast the next day was also superb!

We had the 5 course chefs choice and every course was delicious! Beautiful presentation and paired with fantastic wine. Thank you very much.:-)

Amazing, little known gem
The Gardens of Avila is one of the very best restaurants in San Luis Obispo, which is really saying something.
If you are in the area you should definitely check it.
Chef Trester and his staff are fantastic and the food is amazing.

Lots of organic choices, friendly staff, good food.

We wanted good regional food with local wines, and we were not disappointed. Four of our party decided on the chef's tasting menu - five courses. The tasting menu is individualized somewhat, and the chef decides who gets what. My wife has dairy allergies, and those were taken into account. Basically, they gave the men one menu and the women another.
The food was amazing - every dish was perfectly prepared, creative, and delicious. One member of our party operates an underground restaurant in LA and is a gourmet chef specializing in molecular cooking - she was very impressed with the Gardens of Avila.
The wine list is a good one, featuring many Paso Robles and Edna Valley wines. Markups are very low - mostly just a few dollars over retail.

I did not appreciate the "L.A. attitude" of the chef. I just don't accept the role of chef as deity, and that every little thing about the way a dish is presented is holy and immutable because the chef says so. That said, the food is better than ever here and they are growing a lot of their own produce across the road where they had planned a hotel expansion.

Two of our friends had recently eaten at Gardens and had positive reports on the food. We need more innovative cooking in the south county of San Luis Obispo. The food was great. We got the tasting menu with pairing. For us, there was too much food. Our preference is for small bold tastes. Having close to two full entrees was too much for us along with the other three courses. We appreciate when there is fresh local food and especially food they grew. We felt the wine pairing was weak and the waitress's knowledge of the wine was poor. We liked that local wine was used, but were just told that some was from the Paso area. It is nice when there is a brief explanation about what aspects of the food are accentuated by the wine.

We had a great dinner at Gardens of Avila. Service was excellent and the food was even better. The chef grows most of the vegetables in the restaurant's own garden so everything is incredibly fresh. The tomatoes were picked about an hour before we ate them. Finally, the place is quiet and you can actually have a conversation without screaming to each other. What a concept!
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
We have been here before and find this to be the best restaurant in the area. Great outdoor experience and love how the chef sends outs taste test items. Overall, a wonderful experience!

We ordered the 5 course dinner party. Each course was excellent. The food was memorable and made it a special birthday. I will never forget the carmalized peaches, the fish and meat were moist and tender. The crispy flower was creative and tasty. I want more apricot tea. The breads were warm and delicous. I like that when the dessert came that my husband and I each got a different dessert.

small is good
Great food, excellent presentation, nice looking restaurant, my companion said he thought the portions were small for the price but he is not accustomed to fine dining. I thought the portions were perfect. the noise level however is much louder than you would expect for the number of people in the space. the high ceilings create a lot of echo that turns the background noise into very loud actual noise.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is very delicious and we will definitely be back.

Excellent location, amazing service
We stayed at the Sycamore Springs Resort for a weekend. Naturally we ate at the restaurant located there. The service was impeccable, even on the busy Sunday brunch. We will eat and stay there again.

Good food, nice environment
Good restaurant with great service; however, if you're comparing to the fine dining in LA/Beverly Hills or Napa, I don't think it measures up. That being said, I liked the fact that all the ingredients were locally grown. The biscuits were exceptional. Duck was good. Short-rib was so-so. Reasonable prices though and I liked the fact that corkage fee is waived for local wines. Not a bad idea considering there are a bunch of wineries nearby in SLO.

Our waitress was fabulous.
Our waitress was fabulous. She explained the menu and how the courses were served. Very friendly staff and we loved the romantic atmosphere. Food was delicious! They use all fresh ingredients from the their garden & hand-cut pasta (to die for) just like my grandmothers pasta. We had a Brussels spout with pancetta & grapes that was surprisingly EXCELLENT!!!! They even gave us complimentary truffles for dessert! 5 Stars!!!!! Would highly recommend.

a wonderful experience
It was one of the finest meals I have ever had. We had the Garden Party which was 5 courses. Fantastic! Not inexpensive, so save for a special day. I would heartily endorse this restaurant.

2 hours and 15 minutes
We dined with friends. A party of five. Everything was great. Delicious food, great waiter, we were seated right away, quiet place. However the wait between courses was ridiculous. It took two hours and 15 minutes to have dinner. we ordered two desserts for our group to share and the waiter brought a third dessert "on the house" because we had waited so long. I would have to say the food was worth wait. Choose the cheese and bacon biscuits, I can't get them off my mind. Just don't have any plans for after dinner because who knows when you'll get out of there.
